A general theorem is given relating the cluster-size distribution to the Fisher-type limiting form of the distribution resulting from a Poisson distribution of such clusters. The theorem provides a new method for obtaining the cluster-size probabilities. It also yields a necessary and sufficient condition for the infinite divisibility of a distribution on the nonnegative integers. The ethod and the criterion are illustrated using the shifted logarithmic and the shifted zero-truncated Poisson distributions.  相似文献

Terrel (1983) (The Annals of Probability, Vol. 11, No. 3, 823–826) showed that the coefficient of correlation between the smaller and larger of a sample of size two is at most one-half, and this upper bound is attained only for continuous uniform distributions. His proof is of computational nature and is based on the properties of Legendre polynomials. We give an easier proof of Terrel's characterization and we show how our method can be used for obtaining sharper bounds within the class of discrete distributions onN points and also a characterization of the equidistant uniform distribution.  相似文献

Recently, Lee and Cha proposed two general classes of discrete bivariate distributions. They have discussed some general properties and some specific cases of their proposed distributions. In this paper we have considered one model, namely bivariate discrete Weibull distribution, which has not been considered in the literature yet. The proposed bivariate discrete Weibull distribution is a discrete analogue of the Marshall–Olkin bivariate Weibull distribution. We study various properties of the proposed distribution and discuss its interesting physical interpretations. The proposed model has four parameters, and because of that it is a very flexible distribution. The maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters cannot be obtained in closed forms, and we have proposed a very efficient nested EM algorithm which works quite well for discrete data. We have also proposed augmented Gibbs sampling procedure to compute Bayes estimates of the unknown parameters based on a very flexible set of priors. Two data sets have been analyzed to show how the proposed model and the method work in practice. We will see that the performances are quite satisfactory. Finally, we conclude the paper.  相似文献

In this paper, a new test statistic is presented for testing the null hypothesis of equal multinomial cell probabilities versus various trend alternatives. Various approximate procedures have been employed in the tabulation of F distributions. These approximations generally perform poorly for small degrees of freedom and/or for extreme tail areas.

Closed form expressions are presented in this paper for the exact calculation of cumulative probabilities of F distributions. For small degrees of freedom, the probabilities may be calculated with the aid of standard mathematical tables and a calculator. An APL computer program, also presented in this paper, may be used in calculating the cumulative probabilities according to the exact expressions.  相似文献

In this paper, a new discrete distribution called Uniform-Geometric distribution is proposed. Several distributional properties including survival function, moments, skewness, kurtosis, entropy and hazard rate function are discussed. Estimation of distribution parameter is studied by methods of moments, proportions and maximum likelihood. A simulation study is performed to compare the performance of the different estimates in terms of bias and mean square error. Models for dealing with survival data in the presence of a cured fraction of individuals have attracted the attention of many researchers and practitioners in recent years. In this paper, we propose a cure rate model under the competing risks scenario. For the number of causes that can lead to the event of interest, we assume the polylogarithm distribution. The model is flexible in the sense it encompasses some well-known models, which can be tested using large sample test statistics applied to nested models. Maximum-likelihood estimation based on the EM algorithm and hypothesis testing are investigated. Results of simulation studies designed to gauge the performance of the estimation method and of two test statistics are reported. The methodology is applied in the analysis of a data set.  相似文献

Finite mixtures of distributions have been getting increasing use in the applied literature. In the continuous case, linear combinations of exponentials and gammas have been shown to be well suited for modeling purposes. In the discrete case, the focus has primarily been on continuous mixing, usually of Poisson distributions and typically using gammas to describe the random parameter, But many of these applications are forced, especially when a continuous mixing distribution is used. Instead, it is often prefe-rable to try finite mixtures of geometries or negative binomials, since these are the fundamental building blocks of all discrete random variables. To date, a major stumbling block to their use has been the lack of easy routines for estimating the parameters of such models. This problem has now been alleviated by the adaptation to the discrete case of numerical procedures recently developed for exponential, Weibull, and gamma mixtures. The new methods have been applied to four previously studied data sets, and significant improvements reported in goodness-of-fit, with resultant implications for each affected study.  相似文献

The Poisson-binomial distribution is useful in many applied problems in engineering, actuarial science and data mining. The Poisson-binomial distribution models the distribution of the sum of independent but non-identically distributed random indicators whose success probabilities vary. In this paper, we extend the Poisson-binomial distribution to a generalized Poisson-binomial (GPB) distribution. The GPB distribution corresponds to the case where the random indicators are replaced by two-point random variables, which can take two arbitrary values instead of 0 and 1 as in the case of random indicators. The GPB distribution has found applications in many areas such as voting theory, actuarial science, warranty prediction and probability theory. As the GPB distribution has not been studied in detail so far, we introduce this distribution first and then derive its theoretical properties. We develop an efficient algorithm for the computation of its distribution function, using the fast Fourier transform. We test the accuracy of the developed algorithm by comparing it with enumeration-based exact method and the results from the binomial distribution. We also study the computational time of the algorithm under various parameter settings. Finally, we discuss the factors affecting the computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm and illustrate the use of the software package.  相似文献

Here, we consider a generalized form of the alternative zero-inflated logarithmic series distribution of Kumar and Riyaz (J. Statist. Comp. Simul., 2015) and study some of its important aspects. The parameters of the distribution are estimated by the method of maximum likelihood and some test procedures are developed for testing the significance of the additional parameter of the model. All these estimation and testing procedures are illustrated with the help of certain real life datasets. Weibull distributions have received wide ranging applications in many areas including reliability, hydrology and communication systems. Many estimation methods have been proposed for Weibull distributions. But there has not been a comprehensive comparison of these estimation methods. Most studies have focused on comparing the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) with one of the other approaches. In this paper, we first propose an L-moment estimator for the Weibull distribution. Then, a comprehensive comparison is made of the following methods: the method of maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), the method of logarithmic moments, the percentile method, the method of moments and the method of L-moments.  相似文献

A system of subroutines is presented for efficient computation of joint probabilities from Jensen's bivariate F distribution. Any valid set of parameters is permitted, whereas previous work was limited to the special case of equal numerator degrees of freedom and equal canonical correlations in the underlying multinormal distribution. For testing the fit of a discrete distribution, use of the probability generating function and its empirical counterpart has been suggested in Koeherlakota and Kocherlakota (1986). In the present paper, a particular functional of the corresponding empirical probability generating function process is proposed as a measure to test the discrepancy between the evidence and the hypothesis. The asymptotic behavior of the empirical probability generating function when a parameter is estimated is obtained, The study is exemplified for the Poisson case only but the procedure can be extended to other discrete distributions.  相似文献
