This paper considers the problem of hypothesis testing in a simple panel data regression model with random individual effects and serially correlated disturbances. Following Baltagi et al. (Econom. J. 11:554–572, 2008), we allow for the possibility of non-stationarity in the regressor and/or the disturbance term. While Baltagi et al. (Econom. J. 11:554–572, 2008) focus on the asymptotic properties and distributions of the standard panel data estimators, this paper focuses on testing of hypotheses in this setting. One important finding is that unlike the time-series case, one does not necessarily need to rely on the “super-efficient” type AR estimator by Perron and Yabu (J. Econom. 151:56–69, 2009) to make an inference in the panel data. In fact, we show that the simple t-ratio always converges to the standard normal distribution, regardless of whether the disturbances and/or the regressor are stationary.  相似文献

The concept of fractional cointegration (Cheung and Lai in J Bus Econ Stat 11:103–112, 1993) has been introduced to generalize traditional cointegration (Engle and Granger in Econometrica 55:251–276, 1987) to the long memory framework. In this work we propose a test for fractional cointegration with the sieve bootstrap and compare by simulations the performance of our proposal with other semiparametric methods existing in literature: the three steps technique of Marinucci and Robinson (J Econom 105:225–247, 2001) and the procedure to determine the fractional cointegration rank of Robinson and Yajima (J Econom 106:217–241, 2002).  相似文献

This note provides the asymptotic distribution of a Perron-type innovational outlier unit root test developed by Popp (J Stat Comput Sim 78:1145–1161, 2008) in case of a shift in the intercept for non-trending data. In Popp (J Stat Comput Sim 78:1145–1161, 2008), only critical values for finite samples based on Monte Carlo techniques are tabulated. Using similar arguments as in Zivot and Andrews (J Bus Econ Stat 10:251–270, 1992), weak convergence is shown for the test statistics.  相似文献

We modify the union-of-rejection unit root test of Harvey et?al. ??Unit Root Testing in Practice: Dealing with Uncertainty over the Trend and Initial Condition?? (Harvey, Econom Theory 25:587?C636, 2009). This test rejects if either of two different unit root tests rejects but controls the inherent multiple testing issue by suitably modifying the critical values to ensure the desired null rejection probability. We evaluate the new tests?? power relative to existing ones?? and to the Gaussian asymptotic power envelope. An empirical application illustrates the usefulness of the new statistics.  相似文献

The subject of the present study is to analyze how accurately an elaborated price jump detection methodology by Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard (J. Financ. Econom. 2:1–37, 2004a; 4:1–30, 2006) applies to financial time series characterized by less frequent trading. In this context, it is of primary interest to understand the impact of infrequent trading on two test statistics, applicable to disentangle contributions from price jumps to realized variance. In a simulation study, evidence is found that infrequent trading induces a sizable distortion of the test statistics towards overrejection. A new empirical investigation using high frequency information of the most heavily traded electricity forward contract of the Nord Pool Energy Exchange corroborates the evidence of the simulation. In line with the theory, a “zero-return-adjusted estimation” is introduced to reduce the bias in the test statistics, both illustrated in the simulation study and empirical case.  相似文献

This paper examines the finite-sample behavior of the Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test for fractional integration proposed by Breitung and Hassler (J. Econom. 110:167–185, 2002). We find by extensive Monte Carlo simulations that size distortions can be quite large in small samples. These are caused by a finite-sample bias towards the alternative. Analytic expressions for this bias are derived, based on which the test can easily be corrected.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to introduce a partially adaptive estimator for the censored regression model based on an error structure described by a mixture of two normal distributions. The model we introduce is easily estimated by maximum likelihood using an EM algorithm adapted from the work of Bartolucci and Scaccia (Comput Stat Data Anal 48:821–834, 2005). A Monte Carlo study is conducted to compare the small sample properties of this estimator to the performance of some common alternative estimators of censored regression models including the usual tobit model, the CLAD estimator of Powell (J Econom 25:303–325, 1984), and the STLS estimator of Powell (Econometrica 54:1435–1460, 1986). In terms of RMSE, our partially adaptive estimator performed well. The partially adaptive estimator is applied to data on wife’s hours worked from Mroz (1987). In this application we find support for the partially adaptive estimator over the usual tobit model.  相似文献

This paper proposes various double unit root tests for cross-sectionally dependent panel data. The cross-sectional correlation is handled by the projection method [P.C.B. Phillips and D. Sul, Dynamic panel estimation and homogeneity testing under cross section dependence, Econom. J. 6 (2003), pp. 217–259; H.R. Moon and B. Perron, Testing for a unit root in panels with dynamic factors, J. Econom. 122 (2004), pp. 81–126] or the subtraction method [J. Bai and S. Ng, A PANIC attack on unit roots and cointegration, Econometrica 72 (2004), pp. 1127–1177]. Pooling or averaging is applied to combine results from different panel units. Also, to estimate autoregressive parameters the ordinary least squares estimation [D.P. Hasza and W.A. Fuller, Estimation for autoregressive processes with unit roots, Ann. Stat. 7 (1979), pp. 1106–1120] or the symmetric estimation [D.L. Sen and D.A. Dickey, Symmetric test for second differencing in univariate time series, J. Bus. Econ. Stat. 5 (1987), pp. 463–473] are used, and to adjust mean functions the ordinary mean adjustment or the recursive mean adjustment are used. Combinations of different methods in defactoring to eliminate the cross-sectional dependency, integrating results from panel units, estimating the parameters, and adjusting mean functions yields various available tests for double unit roots in panel data. Simple asymptotic distributions of the proposed test statistics are derived, which can be used to find critical values of the test statistics.

We perform a Monte Carlo experiment to compare the performance of these tests and to suggest optimal tests for a given panel data. Application of the proposed tests to a real data, the yearly export panel data sets of several Latin–American countries for the past 50 years, illustrates the usefulness of the proposed tests for panel data, in that they reveal stronger evidence of double unit roots than the componentwise double unit root tests of Hasza and Fuller [Estimation for autoregressive processes with unit roots, Ann. Stat. 7 (1979), pp. 1106–1120] or Sen and Dickey [Symmetric test for second differencing in univariate time series, J. Bus. Econ. Stat. 5 (1987), pp. 463–473].  相似文献

For multiway contingency tables, Wall and Lienert (Biom. J. 18:259–264, 1976) considered the point-symmetry model. For square contingency tables, Tomizawa (Biom. J. 27:895–905, 1985) gave a theorem that the point-symmetry model holds if and only if both the quasi point-symmetry and the marginal point-symmetry models hold. This paper proposes some quasi point-symmetry models and marginal point-symmetry models for multiway tables, and extends Tomizawa’s (Biom. J. 27:895–905, 1985) theorem into multiway tables. We also show that for multiway tables the likelihood ratio statistic for testing goodness of fit of the point-symmetry model is asymptotically equivalent to the sum of those for testing the quasi point-symmetry model with some order and the marginal point-symmetry model with the corresponding order. An example is given.  相似文献

As GARCH models and stable Paretian distributions have been revisited in the recent past with the papers of Hansen and Lunde (J Appl Econom 20: 873–889, 2005) and Bidarkota and McCulloch (Quant Finance 4: 256–265, 2004), respectively, in this paper we discuss alternative conditional distributional models for the daily returns of the US, German and Portuguese main stock market indexes, considering ARMA-GARCH models driven by Normal, Student’s t and stable Paretian distributed innovations. We find that a GARCH model with stable Paretian innovations fits returns clearly better than the more popular Normal distribution and slightly better than the Student’s t distribution. However, the Student’s t outperforms the Normal and stable Paretian distributions when the out-of-sample density forecasts are considered.  相似文献

In a breakthrough paper, Benjamini and Hochberg (J Roy Stat Soc Ser B 57:289–300, 1995) proposed a new error measure for multiple testing, the FDR; and developed a distribution-free procedure to control it under independence among the test statistics. In this paper we argue by extensive simulation and theoretical considerations that the assumption of independence is not needed. Along the lines of (Ann Stat 32:1035–1061, 2004b), we moreover provide a more powerful method, that exploits an estimator of the number of false nulls among the tests. We propose a whole family of iterative estimators that prove robust under dependence and independence between the test statistics. These estimators can be used to improve also classical multiple testing procedures, and in general to estimate the weight of a known component in a mixture distribution. Innovations are illustrated by simulations.  相似文献

We consider the problem of estimating the portfolio weights obtained by maximizing the Sharpe ratio. Assuming that the underlying asset returns are independent and multivariate normally distributed, Okhrin and Schmid (J. Econom. 134:235–256, 2006) showed that the frequently used sample estimators of these weights do not have a first moment. This paper proves that an unbiased estimator of the Sharpe ratio portfolio weights does not exist at all. Moreover, we show that there is no asymptotically unbiased estimator of these weights within the family of estimators which are bounded by cylinder functions.  相似文献

An alternative stochastic restricted Liu estimator in linear regression   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
In this paper, we introduce an alternative stochastic restricted Liu estimator for the vector of parameters in a linear regression model when additional stochastic linear restrictions on the parameter vector are assumed to hold. The new estimator is a generalization of the ordinary mixed estimator (OME) (Durbin in J Am Stat Assoc 48:799–808, 1953; Theil and Goldberger in Int Econ Rev 2:65–78, 1961; Theil in J Am Stat Assoc 58:401–414, 1963) and Liu estimator proposed by Liu (Commun Stat Theory Methods 22:393–402, 1993). Necessary and sufficient conditions for the superiority of the new stochastic restricted Liu estimator over the OME, the Liu estimator and the estimator proposed by Hubert and Wijekoon (Stat Pap 47:471–479, 2006) in the mean squared error matrix (MSEM) sense are derived. Furthermore, a numerical example based on the widely analysed dataset on Portland cement (Woods et al. in Ind Eng Chem 24:1207–1241, 1932) and a Monte Carlo evaluation of the estimators are also given to illustrate some of the theoretical results.  相似文献

In the paper the problem of testing of two-sided hypotheses for variance components in mixed linear models is considered. When the uniformly most powerful invariant test does not exist (see e.g. Das and Sinha, in Proceedings of the second international Tampere conference in statistics, 1987; Gnot and Michalski, in Statistics 25:213–223, 1994; Michalski and Zmyślony, in Statistics 27:297–310, 1996) then to conduct the optimal statistical inference on model parameters a construction of a test with locally best properties is desirable, cf. Michalski (in Tatra Mountains Mathematical Publications 26:1–21, 2003). The main goal of this article is the construction of the locally best invariant unbiased test for a single variance component (or for a ratio of variance components). The result has been obtained utilizing Andersson’s and Wijsman’s approach connected with a representation of density function of maximal invariant (Andersson, in Ann Stat 10:955–961, 1982; Wijsman, in Proceedings of fifth Berk Symp Math Statist Prob 1:389–400, 1967; Wijsman, in Sankhyā A 48:1–42, 1986; Khuri et al., in Statistical tests for mixed linear models, 1998) and from generalized Neyman–Pearson Lemma (Dantzig and Wald, in Ann Math Stat 22:87–93, 1951; Rao, in Linear statistical inference and its applications, 1973). One selected real example of an unbalanced mixed linear model is given, for which the power functions of the LBIU test and Wald’s test (the F-test in ANOVA model) are computed, and compared with the attainable upper bound of power obtained by using Neyman–Pearson Lemma.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new test for coefficient stability of an AR(1) model against the random coefficient autoregressive model of order 1 neither assuming a stationary nor a non-stationary process under the null hypothesis of a constant coefficient. The proposed test is obtained as a modification of the locally best invariant (LBI) test by Lee [(1998). Coefficient constancy test in a random coefficient autoregressive model. J. Statist. Plann. Inference 74, 93–101]. We examine finite sample properties of the proposed test by Monte Carlo experiments comparing with other existing tests, in particular, the LBI test by McCabe and Tremayne [(1995). Testing a time series for difference stationary. Ann. Statist. 23 (3), 1015–1028], which is for the null of a unit root process against the alternative of a stochastic unit root process.  相似文献

In estimating the proportion of people bearing a sensitive attribute A, say, in a given community, following Warner’s (J Am Stat Assoc 60:63–69, 1965) pioneering work, certain randomized response (RR) techniques are available for application. These are intended to ensure efficient and unbiased estimation protecting a respondent’s privacy when it touches a person’s socially stigmatizing feature like rash driving, tax evasion, induced abortion, testing HIV positive, etc. Lanke (Int Stat Rev 44:197–203, 1976), Leysieffer and Warner (J Am Stat Assoc 71:649–656, 1976), Anderson (Int Stat Rev 44:213–217, 1976, Scand J Stat 4:11–19, 1977) and Nayak (Commun Stat Theor Method 23:3303–3321, 1994) among others have discussed how maintenance of efficiency is in conflict with protection of privacy. In their RR-related activities the sample selection is traditionally by simple random sampling (SRS) with replacement (WR). In this paper, an extension of an essential similarity in case of general unequal probability sample selection even without replacement is reported. Large scale surveys overwhelmingly employ complex designs other than SRSWR. So extension of RR techniques to complex designs is essential and hence this paper principally refers to them. New jeopardy measures to protect revelation of secrecy presented here are needed as modifications of those in the literature covering SRSWR alone. Observing that multiple responses are feasible in addressing such a dichotomous situation especially with Kuk’s (Biometrika 77:436–438, 1990) and Christofides’ (Metrika 57:195–200, 2003) RR devices, an average of the response-specific jeopardizing measures is proposed. This measure which is device dependent, could be regarded as a technical characteristic of the device and it should be made known to the participants before they agree to use the randomization device. The views expressed are the authors’, not of the organizations they work for. Prof Chaudhuri’s research is partially supported by CSIR Grant No. 21(0539)/02/EMR-II.  相似文献

A class of tests due to Shoemaker (Commun Stat Simul Comput 28: 189–205, 1999) for differences in scale which is valid for a variety of both skewed and symmetric distributions when location is known or unknown is considered. The class is based on the interquantile range and requires that the population variances are finite. In this paper, we firstly propose a permutation version of it that does not require the condition of finite variances and is remarkably more powerful than the original one. Secondly we solve the question of what quantile choose by proposing a combined interquantile test based on our permutation version of Shoemaker tests. Shoemaker showed that the more extreme interquantile range tests are more powerful than the less extreme ones, unless the underlying distributions are very highly skewed. Since in practice you may not know if the underlying distributions are very highly skewed or not, the question arises. The combined interquantile test solves this question, is robust and more powerful than the stand alone tests. Thirdly we conducted a much more detailed simulation study than that of Shoemaker (1999) that compared his tests to the F and the squared rank tests showing that his tests are better. Since the F and the squared rank test are not good for differences in scale, his results suffer of such a drawback, and for this reason instead of considering the squared rank test we consider, following the suggestions of several authors, tests due to Brown–Forsythe (J Am Stat Assoc 69:364–367, 1974), Pan (J Stat Comput Simul 63:59–71, 1999), O’Brien (J Am Stat Assoc 74:877–880, 1979) and Conover et al. (Technometrics 23:351–361, 1981).  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new extension for the Birnbaum–Saunder distribution based on the family of the epsilon-skew-symmetric distributions studied in Arellano-Valle et al. (J Stat Plan Inference 128(2):427–443, 2005). The extension allows generating Birnbaun–Saunders type distributions able to deal with extreme or outlying observations (Dupuis and Mills, IEEE Trans Reliab 47:88–95, 1998). Basic properties such as moments and Fisher information matrix are also studied. Results of a real data application are reported illustrating good fitting properties of the proposed model.  相似文献

On MSE of EBLUP   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We consider Best Linear Unbiased Predictors (BLUPs) and Empirical Best Linear Unbiased Predictors (EBLUPs) under the general mixed linear model. The BLUP was proposed by Henderson (Ann Math Stat 21:309–310, 1950). The formula of this BLUP includes unknown elements of the variance-covariance matrix of random variables. If the elements in the formula of the BLUP proposed by Henderson (Ann Math Stat 21:309–310, 1950) are replaced by some type of estimators, we obtain the two-stage predictor called the EBLUP which is model-unbiased (Kackar and Harville in Commun Stat A 10:1249–1261, 1981). Kackar and Harville (J Am Stat Assoc 79:853–862, 1984) show an approximation of the mean square error (the MSE) of the predictor and propose an estimator of the MSE. The MSE and estimators of the MSE are also studied by Prasad and Rao (J Am Stat Assoc 85:163–171, 1990), Datta and Lahiri (Stat Sin 10:613–627, 2000) and Das et al. (Ann Stat 32(2):818–840, 2004). In the paper we consider the BLUP proposed by Royall (J Am Stat Assoc 71:657–473, 1976. Ża̧dło (On unbiasedness of some EBLU predictor. Physica-Verlag, Heidelberg, pp 2019–2026, 2004) shows that the BLUP proposed by Royall (J Am Stat Assoc 71:657–473, 1976) may be treated as a generalisation of the BLUP proposed by Henderson (Ann Math Stat 21:309–310, 1950) and proves model unbiasedness of the EBLUP based on the formula of the BLUP proposed by Royall (J Am Stat Assoc 71:657–473, 1976) under some assumptions. In this paper we derive the formula of the approximate MSE of the EBLUP and its estimators. We prove that the approximation of the MSE is accurate to terms o(D −1) and that the estimator of the MSE is approximately unbiased in the sense that its bias is o(D −1) under some assumptions, where D is the number of domains. The proof is based on the results obtained by Datta and Lahiri (Stat Sin 10:613–627, 2000). Using our results we show some EBLUP based on the special case of the general linear model. We also present the formula of its MSE and estimators of its MSE and their performance in Monte Carlo simulation study.   相似文献

The multivariate skew-t distribution (J Multivar Anal 79:93–113, 2001; J R Stat Soc, Ser B 65:367–389, 2003; Statistics 37:359–363, 2003) includes the Student t, skew-Cauchy and Cauchy distributions as special cases and the normal and skew–normal ones as limiting cases. In this paper, we explore the use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to develop a Bayesian analysis of repeated measures, pretest/post-test data, under multivariate null intercept measurement error model (J Biopharm Stat 13(4):763–771, 2003) where the random errors and the unobserved value of the covariate (latent variable) follows a Student t and skew-t distribution, respectively. The results and methods are numerically illustrated with an example in the field of dentistry.  相似文献
