Quantitative traits measured over pedigrees of individuals may be analysed using maximum likelihood estimation, assuming that the trait has a multivariate normal distribution. This approach is often used in the analysis of mixed linear models. In this paper a robust version of the log likelihood for multivariate normal data is used to construct M-estimators which are resistant to contamination by outliers. The robust estimators are found using a minimisation routine which retains the flexible parameterisations of the multivariate normal approach. Asymptotic properties of the estimators are derived, computation of the estimates and their use in outlier detection tests are discussed, and a small simulation study is conducted.  相似文献

It is well known that Gaussian maximum likelihood estimates of time series models are not robust. In this paper we prove this is also the case for the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic (GARCH) models. By expressing the Gaussian maximum likelihood estimates as Ψ estimates and by assuming the existence of a contaminated process, we prove they possess zero breakdown point and unbounded influence curves. By simulating GARCH processes under several proportions of contaminations we assess how much biased the maximum likelihood estimates may become and compare these results to a robust alternative. The t-student maximum likelihood estimates of GARCH models are also considered.  相似文献

Summary.  Time series arise often in environmental monitoring settings, which typically involve measuring processes repeatedly over time. In many such applications, observations are irregularly spaced and, additionally, are not distributed normally. An example is water monitoring data collected in Boston Harbor by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. We describe a simple robust approach for estimating regression parameters and a first-order autocorrelation parameter in a time series where the observations are irregularly spaced. Estimates are obtained from an estimating equation that is constructed as a linear combination of estimated innovation errors, suitably made robust by symmetric and possibly bounded functions. Under an assumption of data missing completely at random and mild regularity conditions, the proposed estimating equation yields consistent and asymptotically normal estimates. Simulations suggest that our estimator performs well in moderate sample sizes. We demonstrate our method on Secchi depth data collected from Boston Harbor.  相似文献

A robust regression methodology is proposed via M-estimation. The approach adapts to the tail behavior and skewness of the distribution of the random error terms, providing for a reliable analysis under a broad class of distributions. This is accomplished by allowing the objective function, used to determine the regression parameter estimates, to be selected in a data driven manner. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are established and a numerical algorithm is provided to implement the methodology. The finite sample performance of the proposed approach is exhibited through simulation and the approach was used to analyze two motivating datasets.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a family of robust estimates for isotonic regression: isotonic M-estimators. We show that their asymptotic distribution is, up to an scalar factor, the same as that of Brunk's classical isotonic estimator. We also derive the influence function and the breakdown point of these estimates. Finally we perform a Monte Carlo study that shows that the proposed family includes estimators that are simultaneously highly efficient under Gaussian errors and highly robust when the error distribution has heavy tails.  相似文献

In this paper, under a nonparametric regression model, we introduce two families of robust procedures to estimate the regression function when missing data occur in the response. The first proposal is based on a local MM-functional applied to the conditional distribution function estimate adapted to the presence of missing data. The second proposal imputes the missing responses using the local MM-smoother based on the observed sample and then estimates the regression function with the completed sample. We show that the robust procedures considered are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed. A robust procedure to select the smoothing parameter is also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we present two robust estimates for GARCH models. The first is defined by the minimization of a conveniently modified likelihood and the second is similarly defined, but includes an additional mechanism for restricting the propagation of the effect of one outlier on the next estimated conditional variances. We study the asymptotic properties of our estimates proving consistency and asymptotic normality. A Monte Carlo study shows that the proposed estimates compare favorably with respect to other robust estimates. Moreover, we consider some real examples with financial data that illustrate the behavior of these estimates.  相似文献

A diagnostic technique is proposed to detect major gene effects and other systematic departures from a model for the trait means in the presence of outliers. The technique is based on the examination of residuals from fitting variance components models to quantitative pedigree data using robust statistical procedures. The approach is demonstrated using the total ridge count and ridge count of the middle finger from 54 extended families affected with the Fragile X syndrome, and a sample of 217 normal pedigrees.  相似文献

M-quantile models with application to poverty mapping   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Over the last decade there has been growing demand for estimates of population characteristics at small area level. Unfortunately, cost constraints in the design of sample surveys lead to small sample sizes within these areas and as a result direct estimation, using only the survey data, is inappropriate since it yields estimates with unacceptable levels of precision. Small area models are designed to tackle the small sample size problem. The most popular class of models for small area estimation is random effects models that include random area effects to account for between area variations. However, such models also depend on strong distributional assumptions, require a formal specification of the random part of the model and do not easily allow for outlier robust inference. An alternative approach to small area estimation that is based on the use of M-quantile models was recently proposed by Chambers and Tzavidis (Biometrika 93(2):255–268, 2006) and Tzavidis and Chambers (Robust prediction of small area means and distributions. Working paper, 2007). Unlike traditional random effects models, M-quantile models do not depend on strong distributional assumption and automatically provide outlier robust inference. In this paper we illustrate for the first time how M-quantile models can be practically employed for deriving small area estimates of poverty and inequality. The methodology we propose improves the traditional poverty mapping methods in the following ways: (a) it enables the estimation of the distribution function of the study variable within the small area of interest both under an M-quantile and a random effects model, (b) it provides analytical, instead of empirical, estimation of the mean squared error of the M-quantile small area mean estimates and (c) it employs a robust to outliers estimation method. The methodology is applied to data from the 2002 Living Standards Measurement Survey (LSMS) in Albania for estimating (a) district level estimates of the incidence of poverty in Albania, (b) district level inequality measures and (c) the distribution function of household per-capita consumption expenditure in each district. Small area estimates of poverty and inequality show that the poorest Albanian districts are in the mountainous regions (north and north east) with the wealthiest districts, which are also linked with high levels of inequality, in the coastal (south west) and southern part of country. We discuss the practical advantages of our methodology and note the consistency of our results with results from previous studies. We further demonstrate the usefulness of the M-quantile estimation framework through design-based simulations based on two realistic survey data sets containing small area information and show that the M-quantile approach may be preferable when the aim is to estimate the small area distribution function.  相似文献

Aase (1983) has dealt with recursive estimation in nonlinear time series of autoregressive type including its asymptotic properties. This contribution modifies the results for the case of nonlinear time series with outliers using the principle of M-estimation from robust statistics. Strong consistency of the robust recursive estimates is preserved under corresponding assumptions. Several types of such estimates are compared by means of a numerical simulation.  相似文献

This article shows how to use any correlation coefficient to produce an estimate of location and scale. It is part of a broader system, called a correlation estimation system (CES), that uses correlation coefficients as the starting point for estimations. The method is illustrated using the well-known normal distribution. This article shows that any correlation coefficient can be used to fit a simple linear regression line to bivariate data and then the slope and intercept are estimates of standard deviation and location. Because a robust correlation will produce robust estimates, this CES can be recommended as a tool for everyday data analysis. Simulations indicate that the median with this method using a robust correlation coefficient appears to be nearly as efficient as the mean with good data and much better if there are a few errant data points. Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals are discussed for the scale parameter; both normal and Cauchy distributions are covered.  相似文献

Robust estimation of location vectors and scatter matrices is studied under the assumption that the unknown error distribution is spherically symmetric in a central region and completely unknown in the tail region. A precise formulation of the model is given, an analysis of the identifiable parameters in the model is presented, and consistent initial estimators of the identifiable parameters are constructed. Consistent and asymptotically normal M-estimators are constructed (solved iteratively beginning with the initial estimates) based on “influence functions” which vanish outside specified compact sets. Finally M-estimators which are asymptotically minimax (in the sense of Huber) are derived.  相似文献

Robust tests for the common principal components model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
When dealing with several populations, the common principal components (CPC) model assumes equal principal axes but different variances along them. In this paper, a robust log-likelihood ratio statistic allowing to test the null hypothesis of a CPC model versus no restrictions on the scatter matrices is introduced. The proposal plugs into the classical log-likelihood ratio statistic robust scatter estimators. Using the same idea, a robust log-likelihood ratio and a robust Wald-type statistic for testing proportionality against a CPC model are considered. Their asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis and their partial influence functions are derived. A small simulation study allows to compare the behavior of the classical and robust tests, under normal and contaminated data.  相似文献

Mixed effects models or random effects models are popular for the analysis of longitudinal data. In practice, longitudinal data are often complex since there may be outliers in both the response and the covariates and there may be measurement errors. The likelihood method is a common approach for these problems but it can be computationally very intensive and sometimes may even be computationally infeasible. In this article, we consider approximate robust methods for nonlinear mixed effects models to simultaneously address outliers and measurement errors. The approximate methods are computationally very efficient. We show the consistency and asymptotic normality of the approximate estimates. The methods can also be extended to missing data problems. An example is used to illustrate the methods and a simulation is conducted to evaluate the methods.  相似文献

A Kalman Filtering algorithm which is robust to observational outliers is developed by assuming that the measurement error may come from either one of two Normal distributions, and that the transition between these distributions is governed by a Markov Chain. The resulting algorithm is very simple, and consists of two parallel Kalman Filters having different gains. The state estimate is obtained as a weighted average of the estimates from the two parallel filters, where the weights are the posterior probabilities that the current observation comes from either of the two distributions. The large improvements obtained by this Robust Kalman Filter in the presence of outliers is demonstrated with examples.  相似文献

This paper compares the performance between regression analysis and a clustering based neural network approach when the data deviates from the homoscedasticity assumption of regression. Heteroskedasticity is a problem that arises in linear regression due to the unequal error variances. One of the methods to deal heteroskedasticity in classical regression theory is weighted least-square regression (WLS). In order to deal the problem of heteroskedasticity, backpropagation neural network is applied. In this context, an algorithm is proposed which is based on robust estimates of location and dispersion matrix that helps in preserving the error assumption of the linear regression. Analysis is carried out with appropriate designs using simulated data and the results are presented.  相似文献

In this article, a robust multistage parameter estimator is proposed for nonlinear regression with heteroscedastic variance, where the residual variances are considered as a general parametric function of predictors. The motivation is based on considering the chi-square distribution for the calculated sample variance of the data. It is shown that outliers that are influential in nonlinear regression parameter estimates are not necessarily influential in calculating the sample variance. This matter persuades us, not only to robustify the estimate of the parameters of the models for both the regression function and the variance, but also to replace the sample variance of the data by a robust scale estimate.  相似文献

Users of statistical packages need to be aware of the influence that outlying data points can have on their statistical analyses. Robust procedures provide formal methods to spot these outliers and reduce their influence. Although a few robust procedures are mentioned in this article, one is emphasized; it is motivated by maximum likelihood estimation to make it seem more natural. Use of this procedure in regression problems is considered in some detail, and an approximate error structure is stated for the robust estimates of the regression coefficients. A few examples are given. A suggestion of how these techniques should be implemented in practice is included.  相似文献

This article considers the robust design problem for linear random intercept models with both departures from fixed effects and correlated errors on a finite design space. Two strategies are proposed. One is a worst-case method minimizing the maximum value of the MSE of estimates for the fixed effects over the departure. The other is an average-case method minimizing the average value of the MSE with respect to some priors for the class of departure functions and correlation structures of random errors. Two examples are given to show robust designs for two polynomial models.  相似文献

As the ordinary least squares (OLS) method is very sensitive to outliers as well as to correlated responses, a robust coefficient estimation method is proposed in this paper for multi-response surfaces in multistage processes based on M-estimators. In this approach, experimental designs are used in which the intermediate response variables may act as covariates in the next stages. The performances of both the ordinary multivariate OLS and the proposed robust multi-response surface approach are analyzed and compared through extensive simulation experiments. Sum of the squared errors in estimating the regression coefficients reveals the efficiency of the proposed robust approach.  相似文献
