女博士的尴尬对于学术界讨论得热火朝天的女权运动,我一直保持了一份莫名的警惕和距离。直到自己真正成为女博士中间的一员,我才意识到以前对于女权运动过于矜持的态度多少显得有点冷漠。因为女权运动并非空穴来风, 而是有着种种现实动因的。在很多场合(尤其是涉及婚恋问题的场合),女博士都会面临那种来自身份的尴尬,都会隐隐感到一种说不清的压力。这种身份的敏感当然并不意味着她们自认为有什么独特之处,而是由于横亘在她们的内心深处的某种障碍,即人们往往喜欢对女博士作这样的形象定位:迂腐、不食人间烟火、冷酷而又缺少情趣, 最刻薄的莫过于近年来流传开的对人的三种分类:男人,女人,女博士。在进行此种分类的人眼中,女博士竟然丧失了她们身为女性的性别特征,变成了非男非女的第三种人,这的确是一件匪夷所思的事情。不过,在我们这个时代,对于不了解女博士的人或者对女博士持有成见的人,他们的确会认为女博士是缺乏女性魅力的,至少是与美貌无缘的,尽管她们获得了一定程度上象征着知识和智慧的高学历。对此,作为一位女博士,在尴尬之余,还是希望能从我们这个所谓的特殊群体出发, 去冷静地思索一下人们对于女性认识的问题,并探讨一下美貌与智慧的关系问题。     

Must sociology be qualitative?

This article addresses the question of whether sociology can in principle become a quantitative science. I distinguish several senses in which a contrast between quantitative and qualitative science might be understood. I focus on the central — and traditional — sense: can sociology become a nomological science, in the way physics is? I argue that it cannot, on the ontological ground that the determinants of human actions cannot be analyzed in purely causal terms. In the article I try to characterize this difference.     

Fated to be a professor?

My family has included professors for four generations, most of them associated with the University of Toronto. This accounts for my attending that university as an undergraduate where I first studied sociology, and perhaps suggests that I was fated to go on to become a professor myself. I also embraced as a teen-ager the now obsolete identity of “intellectual,“ centered on left-wing political convictions and literary aspirations. This led me into the orbit of the “New York intellectuals“ when in graduate school at Columbia and later to sympathetic identification with my former teacher C. Wright Mills's argument in The Sociological Imagination. My father's posting as a diplomat in Washington during the early years of the Cold War made me, however, a critical supporter of American foreign policy and a liberal opponent of the New Left of the 1960s, a salient presence in the New York University sociology department where I have long taught. The collapse of communism in the early 1990s has led to the death of socialism as an ideal and a decline in the influence of Marxism within sociology. Developmentally disabled children can be adopted

People have often thought that developmentally disabled children were hard to place and poor risks in adoption. However, this research shows that a large number of children of all ages and disabilities were placed for adoption with few disruptions. In light of these findings, agencies may well put more effort into identifying developmentally disabled children as suitable candidates for adoption services.     

To be or not to be: Control and balancing of type I and type II errors

The various costs of Type I and Type II errors of inference from data are discussed. Unfortunately, other things equal, Types I and II errors are inversely related. Six methods of minimizing Type I error in studies are presented, each of which may be employed even after data are collected. Type II errors may also be minimized by a combination of study design and analytic means. Although some of these techniques must be built into the study others can be undertaken when beginning work on a data set. Only one of these techniques will increase Type I error, and those involving data reduction may decrease both types of error.

How bad can a voting location be

Two questions concerning the location of a single facility by a voting process are investigated for transportation networks:

- What is the maximum number of customers located on the network preferring some rival point over a voting solution?

- How does the average distance of the customers to the facility increase when a voting location instead of a Weber location is chosen for the facility?

Complete answers are given for general networks and for certain planar networks, viz., the so-called generalized cacti.
