Mother's Art was established by Sichuan Women's Federation in October. The Mother's Art project is intended to spur development of the craft industry in Sichuan Province. Under the project, the women's federation provides financial assistance to underprivileged women, so they can acquire the skills needed to make crafts and, in turn, make money to care for their families. The figures were alarming; in 2010, nearly 30 percent of the children under age 2 had anemia and more than 20 percent of the children under age 5 developed slower than ordinary children in poverty-stricken areas of China.
In 2012, the nutrition-improvement program (for children in poverty- stricken areas) was launched, in 100 impoverished counties in 10 provinces, by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), to improve the nutrition and physical conditioning of the regions' young children. Each child, between 6 months and 2 years of age, receive a nutritional package, which contains protein, vitamin and mineral supplements, every day. China will establish this year's health files for at least 20 percent of rural residents, and will give priority to women, children and seniors, Deng Haihua, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, told a recent news conference. Deng said the ministry began, in 2007, to establish rural family health files in 13 counties nationwide as part of the country's medical service system reform. "Standard electronic documents will replace conventional paper documentation throughout the country," Deng added. "We, and the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), have also made efforts to improve medical security for children suffering from congenital heart disease and leukemia.
