The issue of transracial adoption has been a controversial issue in foster care and adoption placement decisions. In 1994, the 104th Congress passed the Multiethnic Placement Act (MEPA), forbidding agencies receiving federal funds from solely considering race, culture, and ethnicity in making foster care and adoption placement decisions. Congress mandated that the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) develop policy guidelines for child placement agencies to follow. In April 1995, DHHS issued the guidelines that agencies were to follow. The authors of the paper discuss the MEPA, DHHS's policy guidelines for agencies and the guidelines' legal support, and the implications for social work practice in foster care and adoption placements.  相似文献

The relationship between verbal behavior and stimulus equivalence was examined using three sets of children differing in chronological age and verbal ability: (1) non-hearing impaired three and four year olds who had verbal skills generally consistent with their chronological ages; (2) partially hearing (severe to profoundly deaf) children who were rated with verbal ages of above 2 years; and (3) partially hearing children (also severely to profoundly deaf) who were rated with verbal ages of below 2 years. All children were taught a series of four conditional discriminations using unfamiliar stimuli. The children were then tested to determine whether classes of equivalent stimuli had formed. Although all the children were able to learn the conditional discriminations equally well and all the verbally-able children (normal and partially hearing) formed equivalence classes, only one of the verbally-impaired children reliably demonstrated stimulus equivalence formation. These results are consistent with the suggestion that stimulus equivalence and human verbal behavior are closely related.

Aging is associated with decreased levels of growth hormone and both circulating and local levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). The decline in IGF-I has been postulated to be important in both physiological aging and pathological states that are seen with aging. In parallel, inappropriate apoptosis is thought to play a role in some of these same processes. In experimental models, IGF-I signalling through the IGF-I receptor confers a protective effect from apoptosis. This review summarizes the results of studies documenting the IGF-I anti-apoptotic effect in neuronal model systems. The known downstream signalling cascades that mediate this signal are beginning to be elucidated; these include MAP kinase and Akt. In addition, IGF-I prevents the reduction of anti-apoptotic proteins of the bcl-2 family induced by hyperosmotic conditions in cultured neuronal cells. IGF-I has been shown to positively impact on tau, the microtubule-associated protein, possibly preventing the degradation of proteins that are associated with the neurofibrils seen in Alzheimer's disease. All of the studies to date support the hypothesis that appropriately high levels of IGF-I signalling prevent some of the processes associated with aging.  相似文献

Considerable advances have been made in recent years in medical genetics. These advances have led to a better understanding of the inheritance of disease. Social workers involved in schools, child welfare, medical, and other institutional settings often work with clients who have genetically inherited disorders. Consequently, there is a growing need for social workers to increase their knowledge of genetics and genetic counseling. This paper reviews the literature on the family effects of unemployment in order to specify how changes in the economy might effect fathering during periods of unemployment. The purpose for doing so is to provide information to clinicians on how job loss effects family dynamics. This paper is organized around three variables that are seen as influencing the father and child relationship. These variables are: the father's reaction to job loss, the mother's reaction to job loss, and the characteristics of the child. This paper draws upon practice-related research experiences in both education and psychotherapy to suggest several implications and directions for efforts in evaluating social work practice. Different aspects of a case will be emphasized depending on the theoretical lens used to understand it. Intersubjectivity theory will be used in case discussion to illustrate how our focus in the case shifts with different theoretical orientations. By using intersubjectivity, the multiple subjectivities: patient, therapist and supervisor’s influence on the therapeutic process are highlighted. While the potential for gender bias in psychotherapy is commonly recognized, most of the literature addressing this problem has concentrated on the assessment process. Therapists are left with few guidelines regarding the avoidance of bias in ongoing therapeutic relationships. This article reviews alternative explanations of gender difference in moral judgment with particular attention to their clinical relevance. The writer suggests that therapists' conceptions of these differences, as well as their own moral judgment, may be a potent source of gender bias. Understanding these differences is conceivably a powerful means of averting their contaminating effects on clinical theory and practice.  相似文献

This article examines female delinquency as a symptom of the primary traumas of physical and sexual abuse and secondary traumas, when the environment responds with blame or disbelief. While social workers are increasingly aware that such a relationship often exists, we have yet to operationalize the relevant implications for assessment, practice, and policy in the juvenile justice system. It will be sugested that delinquency may be an act of disclosure and thus effective intervention entails alleviating primary and secondary trauma at the individual-community interface.  相似文献

In the field of further education, social work is beginning to be accepted as an academic and vocational discipline in many countries across the world. Indigenous practice has greatly contributed to a plurality of perspectives adding to diversity of social work knowledge and adding new facets to traditional social work values and interventions. The authors predict that the current dearth of academic material on Islamic perspectives in social work will be more fully addressed in the near future. ObjectiveCommunity programs addressing social determinants of health are growing in prominence and are increasingly expected to provide metrics of success. Our objective is to assess the role of an academic-community partnership for a community health worker program targeting social and medical needs, and determine factors impacting its effectiveness.MethodsWe draw on a 4.5-year partnership that includes both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Quantitative data collection mechanisms evolved as a result of the partnership. Qualitative interviews were conducted with community health workers and leadership.ResultsTo align medical and social support services in a sustainable and measurable manner, our academic-community partnership found that creating and maintaining a mutually beneficial space through small wins enabled us to then address larger problems and needs. Ongoing self-study and process evaluation allowed quick adjustments. Unique partnership elements such as having consistent funding and flexible timelines and objectives were essential.ConclusionsWhen integrating health and social services, academic-community partnerships create pathways for bidirectional learning than can quickly turn research into practice and support sustainability, especially when based on incrementally built trust and a history of small wins.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the current aspiration to further the process of continuing professional development in social work. It contends that knowledge from the field of adult learning theory may be helpful in sign-posting some tangible ways forward here. The particular emphasis is on critically assessing the usefulness of identifying learning styles as indicators of preferred ways of learning. Knowledge of learning styles is explored as one way of promoting students' learning on practice placements. A small-scale qualitative research study with a group of practice teachers and their students is presented as a vehicle for exploring this new terrain in social work. The findings of this research build on key themes identified by the current literature in this area. The author's findings suggest that information about learning styles has direct practical application in the social work practice teaching arena. The data points to the potential value of using such information to guide students' learning on practice placements and has relevance to considerations of their continuing professional development. Suggestions are put forward to highlight how practice teaching and Diploma in Social Work programmes could facilitate this process. The paper stresses the over-riding need to view students as actors in a broader social context, however, and highlights how information regarding learning styles needs to be utilised in this context.  相似文献

This qualitative study examines the impact of “founders' syndrome” in ten feminist nonprofit organizations, giving attention to the ways in which original members and organizers (founders) retain control and set the agenda of these organizations beyond their official terms of office. In these community‐based organizations, founders' syndrome provides stability, but it also affects the ability of younger members to contribute and influence organizational direction. This paper presents the results of an empirical investigation of family functioning for a sample of child and adolescent psychiatric inpatients. The McMaster Family Assessment Device, completed by patients and other family members at the time of the child's admission, provides an assessment of family competence in six areas; problem solving, communication, roles, affective communication, affective involvement, and behavior control. Results indicate that families of child and adolescent inpatients experience significant problems across all dimensions of family functioning. Further, patients report that family problems are more severe than do other family members. Implications of the study findings for social work practice are discussed.  相似文献

A brief history of the research, findings, and conclusions on how our two cortical hemispheres function is given as are some current speculations regarding an anatomical locus for some psychological phenomena. The paper suggests that much of therapy favors the left hemispheric or sequential mode of thinking. Many therapists may not recognize in some of their clients' responses a right hemispheric or simultaneous thinking preference. Respect for such thinking as on the same intellectual and maturational level as the sequential mode is indicated. Furthermore, techniques to help such clients through the utilization of their preferred hemisphere and through fostering hemispheric cross-talk can be devised. Three cases of such clients and the techniques used in working with them are described.  相似文献

This paper is written from a psychological perspective and explores the relationship between black people's stages of racial identity development and interracial communication. It describes Cross's model of psychological nigrescence for black people and Helms's model of white identity development–in which she describes how whites go through the process of defining themselves as racial beings. Since the majority of social workers in Britain are white, it is argued that white identity development and its implication for interracial communication are important aspects to consider. It is argued that one's stage of racial identity may have a stronger impact on the communication process between white social workers and black clients than 'race' per se.  相似文献
