All is one: Healthy communities and a sustainable future

The ‘Community Development, Sustainable Development andthe Environment’ section at the Budapest conference broughttogether people from Norway and Hungary involved in linkingsustainable development and community development. Participantsdiscussed ways of linking these issues and examples of goodpractice from each country. They summarized their conclusionsfor the Budapest Declaration. In this article the discussionand examples are presented.     

Strength Broadsides from Disability on the Arts

This book is a deeply personal treatise connecting experienceto the very tangible social constructs around Dis-Ability. We are writing as what Masefield calls TAP s – temporarilyable people – with experience of working in communitydevelopment and community arts: his own life exemplifies this.Masefield was a respected and successful theatre director andcommunity arts manager when, at forty-four, he developed a debilitatingand devastating myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), which renderedhim speechless and almost immobile. Proceedings of The Sixtieth Annual Conference of The AmericanAssociation for Public Opinion Research The 2005 conference of the American Association for Public OpinionResearch (AAPOR) was held May 12–15 at the FontainebleauHotel in Miami Beach and set records in several categories.First, there were 913 registrants, easily topping last year’srecord attendance of 843 in Phoenix (which was boosted by beinga World Association for Public Opinion Research year). Amongthese attendees were five Burns "Bud" Roper Fellows, whose expenseswere covered by Roper’s generous endowment to AAPOR. Rural grass-roots organizing in eastern Europe: the experience from Lithuania

This article examines rural grass-roots organizing in Lithuania.A conceptual scheme is proposed to differentiate among threetypes of activities prevalent in rural community building: theinitiation, voluntary communal activities, and not-for-profitcommunal activities. The model is applied to examine the establishmentof one of the most successful rural non-governmental organizations(NGOs) in Eastern Lithuania – the Community Centre ofBalninkai village (population 496). The strategies that wereused to initiate the Balninkai organization and to engage involuntary communal and not-for-profit activities are identified.Internal and external factors influencing successful organizingare addressed as well as the potential impact of European Unionmembership. While there are numerous obstacles facing ruralactivists in post-socialist Lithuania, there are also significantopportunities for community organizations to contribute to sustainedrural development in Lithuania.

Community development in the west of Ireland: twenty years on in the Killala area

This research returns to a 1986 Community Development Journalarticle, which highlighted the unique and successful locallydriven community development efforts in Killala, western Ireland.Since then, a variety of social, economic, and political changeshave taken place, which have reshaped Ireland and the capacityfor local community action. Twenty years on, this communitywas revisited with the goal of assessing the changes, as wellas to determine community characteristics that have persisted.This article seeks to provide an update on local conditions,presents an in-depth exploration of local grassroots efforts,and builds on the previous case study by providing an empiricalexploration of the factors shaping local community agency –a mixed-method framework consisting of extensive key informantinterviews, focus groups, and household survey data.

Assumptions, Motivations and Neutrality in Rural Development: The Portuguese Paradigm

The Durham Miners' Gala and the spirit of community

Can industrial communities survive the loss of their industrialheritage? Can communities once thought to be in terminal declinereinvigorate themselves? Evidence from the Durham coalminingcommunities suggests that the answer to both questions is yes.This paper presents evidence from a study of the annual DurhamMiners' Gala – the ‘Big Meeting’ – thatreflects a revival of community vitality around the event. Togetherwith an analysis of the Gala itself, the complex backgroundto the resilience of the mining communities is explored.
