The S-system computation of non-central gamma distribution

The non-central gamma distribution can be regarded as a general form of non-central χ² distributions whose computations were thoroughly investigated (Ruben, H., 1974, Non-central chi-square and gamma revisited. Both distributional function forms are usually in terms of weighted infinite series of the central one. The ad hoc approximations to cumulative probabilities of non-central gamma were extended or discussed by Chattamvelli, Knüsel and Bablok (Knüsel, L. and Bablok, B., 1996, Computation of the noncentral gamma distribution. SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 17, 1224–1231), and Ruben (Ruben, H., 1974, Non-central chi-square and gamma revisited. Communications in Statistics, 3(7), 607–633). However, they did not implement and demonstrate proposed numerical procedures. Approximations to non-central densities and quantiles are not available. In addition, its S-system formulation has not been derived. Here, approximations to cumulative probabilities, density, and quantiles based on the method of Knüsel and Bablok are derived and implemented in R codes. Furthermore, two alternate S-system forms are recast on the basis of techniques of Savageau and Voit (Savageau, M.A. and Voit, E.O., 1987, Recasting nonlinear differential equations as S-systems: A canonical nonlinear form. Mathematical Biosciences, 87, 83–115) as well as Chen (Chen, Z.-Y., 2003, Computing the distribution of the squared sample multiple correlation coefficient with S-Systems. Communications in Statistics—Simulation and Computation, 32(3), 873–898.) and Chen and Chou (Chen, Z.-Y. and Chou, Y.-C., 2000, Computing the noncentral beta distribution with S-system. Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, 33, 343–360.). Statistical densities, cumulative probabilities, quantiles can be evaluated by only one numerical solver power low analysis and simulation (PLAS). With the newly derived S-systems of non-central gamma, the specialized non-central χ² distributions are demonstrated under five cases in the same three situations studied by Rust and Voit. Both numerical values in pairs are almost equal. Based on these, nine cases in three similar situations are designed for demonstration and evaluation. In addition, exact values in finite significant digits are provided for comparison. Demonstrations are conducted by R package and PLAS solver in the same PC system. By doing these, very accurate and consistent numerical results are obtained by three methods in two groups. On the other hand, these three methods are performed competitively with respect to speed of computation. Numerical advantages of S-systems over the ad hoc approximation and related properties are also discussed.     

The United States Book Exchange

Abstract

Serials Review visits the United States Book Exchange in Cleveland, Ohio. The staff of this nonprofit organization supplies back issues to over 2,000 member libraries in addition to nonmember libraries in the United States and the world. The n.s. conditions for the ration of two quadratic forms to have an f-distribution and its applications

Suppose that ξ and η be two random vectors and that (ξ^τ, η^τ have an elliptically contoured distribution or a multivariate normal distribution. In this article, we obtain some necessary and sufficient (N.S.) conditions such that the ratio of two quadratic forms, say ξ^τ Aξ and η^τ Bη(for some symmetric nonnegative matrices A and B), has an F-distribution. As applications, we extend the classical F-test to some dependent two group samples. Two cases are considered: elliptically contoured and normal distributions.

The Thomson ISI Journal Selection Process

Abstract

For more than four decades, Thomson ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) has been committed to a fundamental mission: to provide essential products and services that enable access to and management of the highest quality, most relevant materials for all participants in the research process. In 1958, Dr. Eugene Garfield started ISI by borrowing five hundred dollars from Household Finance. Current Contents^® of Chemical, Phamaco-Medical & Life Sciences was the sole product, covering 286 journals. Today the Thomson ISI database covers more than 16,000 international journals, books, and proceedings in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. This article describes the processes and standards that result in ISI's abstracting and indexing services. Serials Review 2003; 29:210–212.     

The p-value Function and Statistical Inference

ABSTRACT

This article has two objectives. The first and narrower is to formalize the p-value function, which records all possible p-values, each corresponding to a value for whatever the scalar parameter of interest is for the problem at hand, and to show how this p-value function directly provides full inference information for any corresponding user or scientist. The p-value function provides familiar inference objects: significance levels, confidence intervals, critical values for fixed-level tests, and the power function at all values of the parameter of interest. It thus gives an immediate accurate and visual summary of inference information for the parameter of interest. We show that the p-value function of the key scalar interest parameter records the statistical position of the observed data relative to that parameter, and we then describe an accurate approximation to that p-value function which is readily constructed.

In this note, the limiting spectral distribution for large sample covariance matrices with unbounded m-dependent structure is obtained under the third moment for the entries. This partially extends the results of Hui and Pan (Comm. Statist. Theory and Methods, 2010, 39: 935–941).     

The Making of the 2011 Revision of the Integrating Resources Manual

Abstract

This installment of Electronic Journal Forum describes the steps taken to revise Integrating Resources: A Cataloging Manual, which was first published in 2003. The revision reflects recent changes in MARC 21 coding and Program for Cooperative Cataloging practices, including provider-neutral record guidance. Examples in the manual were reviewed and purged of inconsistencies in coding.
