The United States Census Bureau Library, acting on a study commissioned in 2002, has undertaken to improve electronic access for their patrons. The library provides e-journal and database access. The staff relies on usage statistics from these resources to sharpen the focus of the collection. Through an aggressive outreach program Census Bureau employees learn about these new products and services. Future plans include adding more e-journals, an open OPAC, and a new library building.  相似文献

Abstract

The criteria for selecting a serials management system are often the same as those for selecting an integrated library system in toto. In the post-selection/production environment, the library–vendor relationship matures as a new operational framework is established. Serials management systems must become more efficient and make better use of electronic commerce, especially as a greater emphasis is placed on access to electronic journals (e-journals). Abstract

A collection manager and an acquisition librarian discuss difficult decisions to be made regarding electronic resources and associated value-added services. Balancing budget constraints with patron demands for easy access to information requires librarians to reevaluate assumptions about the electronic products and associated services that have quickly become staples of library life, even as these staples become increasingly untenable. The authors scrutinize the cost/benefit of continuing value-added services, such as providing access to abstracting and indexing tools and full MARC cataloging records of journal titles, as well as considering the adoption of new services such as federated search engines and link resolvers.  相似文献

Abstract

The Internet, Google, e-journals, packages, e-books and patron driven acquisitions have all been perceived as “a threat to libraries as we know them.” Yet, in spite of these developments and under the weight of chronic budget pressures, the typical academic library now offers more users better access to more content and services than ever before. In this session we will look at how librarians and the vendors that serve them have responded to these “threats” to their future to create new and improved services.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We evaluate the bias from endogenous job mobility in fixed-effects estimates of worker- and firm-specific earnings heterogeneity using longitudinally linked employer–employee data from the LEHD infrastructure file system of the U.S. Census Bureau. First, we propose two new residual diagnostic tests of the assumption that mobility is exogenous to unmodeled determinants of earnings. Both tests reject exogenous mobility. We relax exogenous mobility by modeling the matched data as an evolving bipartite graph using a Bayesian latent-type framework. Our results suggest that allowing endogenous mobility increases the variation in earnings explained by individual heterogeneity and reduces the proportion due to employer and match effects. To assess external validity, we match our estimates of the wage components to out-of-sample estimates of revenue per worker. The mobility-bias-corrected estimates attribute much more of the variation in revenue per worker to variation in match quality and worker quality than the uncorrected estimates. Abstract

Libraries have an established track record of preserving the scholarly record, but this stewardship role has generally been exercised over materials the library has purchased or otherwise acquired. With open access publishing, the library’s role in preservation is less certain, as libraries may facilitate access to a wide array of freely accessible materials without ever obtaining any copies. Additionally, the open access landscape includes many small noncommercial publishers with limited resources that may not be able to invest in long term preservation and access. In this column, Courtney McAllister, Electronic Resources Librarian at Lillian Goldman Law Library, Yale University, discusses preservation concerns and strategies for open access publications and how libraries may be affected by unstable or unpredictable long-term access.  相似文献

The family of the asymmetric logistic copulas appears naturally in modeling tail dependence. Within this family, some well-known models, as independence and logistic dependence, define precise hypotheses, having zero posterior probability for an absolute continuous posterior distribution.

We show that the e-value associated to the Full Bayesian Significance Test has a good performance in non standard dependence problems, obtaining posterior estimates and predictive distributions.

The analysis proposed is illustrated with two examples: (1) monthly sea level maxima at Newlyn and Sheerness, England (1990–2005) and (2) AIDS rates related to an educational indicator in U.S. Census Bureau (2007 U.S. Census Bureau (2007). Persons 25 Years Old and Over with a Bachelor's Degree or More. http://www.census.gov/statab/ranks/rank19.html  [Google Scholar]). We validate the inferences obtained through simulated data.  相似文献

The measurement of flows in the American labor market has challenged researchers for years. Several problems, including response variability, rotation group bias, and matching errors, hinder accurate measurement of the flows. The Bureau of the Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics jointly sponsored a conference to examine these problems, present current research on solutions to the problems, and submit recommendations for improving the data. Recommendations include procedural changes in the Current Population Survey as well as new estimation techniques.  相似文献
