To test the equality of the covariance matrices of two dependent bivariate normals, we derive five combination tests using the Simes method. We compare the performance of these tests using simulation to each other and to the competing tests. In particular, simulations show that one of the combination tests has the best performance in terms of controlling the type I error rate even for small samples with similar power compared to other tests. We also apply the recommended test to real data from a crossover bioavailability study.  相似文献

Accurate diagnosis of a molecularly defined subtype of cancer is often an important step toward its effective control and treatment. For the diagnosis of some subtypes of a cancer, a gold standard with perfect sensitivity and specificity may be unavailable. In those scenarios, tumor subtype status is commonly measured by multiple imperfect diagnostic markers. Additionally, in many such studies, some subjects are only measured by a subset of diagnostic tests and the missing probabilities may depend on the unknown disease status. In this paper, we present statistical methods based on the EM algorithm to evaluate incomplete multiple imperfect diagnostic tests under a missing at random assumption and one missing not at random scenario. We apply the proposed methods to a real data set from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) colon cancer family registry on diagnosing microsatellite instability for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer to estimate diagnostic accuracy parameters (i.e. sensitivities and specificities), prevalence, and potential differential missing probabilities for 11 biomarker tests. Simulations are also conducted to evaluate the small-sample performance of our methods.  相似文献

We propose tests for hypotheses on the parameters of the deterministic trend function of a univariate time series. The tests do not require knowledge of the form of serial correlation in the data, and they are robust to strong serial correlation. The data can contain a unit root and still have the correct size asymptotically. The tests that we analyze are standard heteroscedasticity autocorrelation robust tests based on nonparametric kernel variance estimators. We analyze these tests using the fixed-b asymptotic framework recently proposed by Kiefer and Vogelsang. This analysis allows us to analyze the power properties of the tests with regard to bandwidth and kernel choices. Our analysis shows that among popular kernels, specific kernel and bandwidth choices deliver tests with maximal power within a specific class of tests. Based on the theoretical results, we propose a data-dependent bandwidth rule that maximizes integrated power. Our recommended test is shown to have power that dominates a related test proposed by Vogelsang. We apply the recommended test to the logarithm of a net barter terms of trade series and we find that this series has a statistically significant negative slope. This finding is consistent with the well-known Prebisch–Singer hypothesis.  相似文献

We present a unifying approach to multiple testing procedures for sequential (or streaming) data by giving sufficient conditions for a sequential multiple testing procedure to control the familywise error rate (FWER). Together, we call these conditions a ‘rejection principle for sequential tests’, which we then apply to some existing sequential multiple testing procedures to give simplified understanding of their FWER control. Next, the principle is applied to derive two new sequential multiple testing procedures with provable FWER control, one for testing hypotheses in order and another for closed testing. Examples of these new procedures are given by applying them to a chromosome aberration data set and finding the maximum safe dose of a treatment.  相似文献

In the context of functional data analysis, we propose new sample tests for homogeneity. Based on some well-known depth measures, we construct four different statistics in order to measure distance between the two samples. A simulation study is performed to check the efficiency of the tests when confronted with shape and magnitude perturbation. Finally, we apply these tools to measure the homogeneity in some samples of real data, and we obtain good results using this new method.  相似文献

Transition models are an important framework that can be used to model longitudinal categorical data. A relevant issue in applying these models is the condition of stationarity, or homogeneity of transition probabilities over time. We propose two tests to assess stationarity in transition models: Wald and likelihood-ratio tests, which do not make use of transition probabilities, using only the estimated parameters of the models in contrast to the classical test available in the literature. In this paper, we present two motivating studies, with ordinal longitudinal data, to which proportional odds transition models are fitted and the two proposed tests are applied as well as the classical test. Additionally, their performances are assessed through simulation studies. The results show that the proposed tests have good performance, being better for control of type-I error and they present equivalent power functions asymptotically. Also, the correlations between the Wald, likelihood-ratio and the classical test statistics are positive and large, an indicator of general concordance. Additionally, both of the proposed tests are more flexible and can be applied in studies with qualitative and quantitative covariates.  相似文献

We use meta-analytic procedures to develop new tests for panel cointegration, combining p-values from time-series cointegration tests on the units of the panel. The tests are robust to heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence between the panel units. To achieve the latter, we employ a sieve bootstrap procedure with joint resampling of the units’ residuals. A simulation study shows that the tests can have substantially smaller size distortion than tests ignoring the presence of cross-sectional dependence while preserving high power. We apply the tests to a panel of post-Bretton Woods data to test for weak purchasing power parity.  相似文献

Testing conditional symmetry against various alternative diagonals-parameter symmetry models often provides a point of departure in studies of square contingency tables with ordered categories. Typically, chi-square or likelihood-ratio tests are used for such purposes. Since these tests depend on the validity of asymptotic approximation, they may be inappropriate in small-sample situations where exact tests are required. In this paper, we apply the theory of UMP unbiased tests to develop a class of exact tests for conditional symmetry in small samples. Oesophageal cancer and longitudinal income data are used to illustrate the approach.  相似文献

Survival bias is a long recognized problem in case–control studies, and many varieties of bias can come under this umbrella term. We focus on one of them, termed Neyman's bias or ‘prevalence–incidence bias’. It occurs in case–control studies when exposure affects both disease and disease-induced mortality, and we give a formula for the observed, biased odds ratio under such conditions. We compare our result with previous investigations into this phenomenon and consider models under which this bias may or may not be important. Finally, we propose three hypothesis tests to identify when Neyman's bias may be present in case–control studies. We apply these tests to three data sets, one of stroke mortality, another of brain tumors, and the last of atrial fibrillation, and find some evidence of Neyman's bias in the former two cases, but not the last case.  相似文献

We consider several grouping tests for regression misspecification, with reference to housing-demand function estimation. We compare three existing test procedures, demonstrate modifications necessary in most applications, and propose a fourth test to distinguish between two categories of potential specification error. The test procedures are evaluated in artificial simulations of alternative errors. Finally, we apply the tests to FHA home purchase data. We reject the hypothesis that household and grouped regressions differ only by sampling error or random mismeasurement of household income or price. Our results have implications for choices among test procedures and interpretations of previous housing-demand analysis.  相似文献

There is substantial evidence that many time series associated with financial and insurance claim data are fat-tailed, with a (much) higher probability of " outliers' compared with the normal distribution. However, standard tests, or variants of them, for the presence of unit roots assume a normal distribution for the innovations driving the series. Application of the former to the latter therefore involves an inconsistency. We assess the impact of this inconsistency and provide information on its impact on inference when innovations are drawn from the Cauchy and sequence of t(v) distributions. A simple prediction that fat tails will uniformly lead to over-sizing of standard tests (because the fatness in the tail translates to the test distribution) turns out to be incorrect: we find that some tests are over-sized but some are under-sized. We also consider size retention and the power of the Dickey-Fuller pivotal and normalized bias test statistics and weighted symmetric versions of these tests. To make the unit root testing procedure feasible, we develop an entropy-based test for some fat-tailed distributions and apply it to share prices from the FTSE100.  相似文献

Symmetry and separability of a covariance function are common assumptions to simplify the modeling effort of spatial–temporal processes. However, many studies in environmental sciences show that real data have complex spatial–temporal dependency structures resulting from lack of symmetry or violation of other standard assumptions of the covariance function. In this study, we propose new formal tests for lack of symmetry by using spectral representations of the spatial–temporal covariance functions of regularly spaced spatial–temporal data. The advantage of the proposed tests is that classical analysis of variance (ANOVA) models can be used for detecting lack of symmetry inherent in spatial–temporal processes. We evaluate the performance of the tests with simulation studies and we apply them to air pollution data.  相似文献

We study nonparametric estimation of the illness-death model using left-truncated and right-censored data. The general aim is to estimate the multivariate distribution of a progressive multi-state process. Maximum likelihood estimation under censoring suffers from problems of uniqueness and consistency, so instead we review and extend methods that are based on inverse probability weighting. For univariate left-truncated and right-censored data, nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation can be considerably improved when exploiting knowledge on the truncation distribution. We aim to examine the gain in using such knowledge for inverse probability weighting estimators in the illness-death framework. Additionally, we compare the weights that use truncation variables with the weights that integrate them out, showing, by simulation, that the latter performs more stably and efficiently. We apply the methods to intensive care units data collected in a cross-sectional design, and discuss how the estimators can be easily modified to more general multi-state models.  相似文献

The currently existing estimation methods and goodness-of-fit tests for the Cox model mainly deal with right censored data, but they do not have direct extension to other complicated types of censored data, such as doubly censored data, interval censored data, partly interval-censored data, bivariate right censored data, etc. In this article, we apply the empirical likelihood approach to the Cox model with complete sample, derive the semiparametric maximum likelihood estimators (SPMLE) for the Cox regression parameter and the baseline distribution function, and establish the asymptotic consistency of the SPMLE. Via the functional plug-in method, these results are extended in a unified approach to doubly censored data, partly interval-censored data, and bivariate data under univariate or bivariate right censoring. For these types of censored data mentioned, the estimation procedures developed here naturally lead to Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit tests for the Cox model. Some simulation results are presented.  相似文献

Tests for unit roots in panel data have become very popular. Two attractive features of panel data unit root tests are the increased power compared to time-series tests, and the often well-behaved limiting distributions of the tests. In this paper we apply Monte Carlo simulations to investigate how well the normal approximation works for a heterogeneous panel data unit root test when there are only a few cross sections in the sample. We find that the normal approximation, which should be valid for large numbers of cross-sectional units, works well, at conventional significance levels, even when the number of cross sections is as small as two. This finding is valuable for the applied researcher since critical values will be easy to obtain and p-values will be readily available.  相似文献

We propose tests for parameter constancy in the time series direction in panel data models. We construct a locally best invariant test based on Tanaka [Time series analysis: nonstationary and noninvertible distribution theory. New York: Wiley; 1996] and an asymptotically point optimal test based on Elliott and Müller [Efficient tests for general persistent time variation in regression coefficients. Rev Econ Stud. 2006;73:907–940]. We derive the limiting distributions of the test statistics as T→∞ while N is fixed, and calculate the critical values by applying numerical integration and response surface regression. Simulation results show that the proposed tests perform well if we apply them appropriately.  相似文献

In longitudinal data, observations of response variables occur at fixed or random time points, and can be stopped by a termination event. When comparing longitudinal data for two groups, such irregular observation behavior must be considered to yield suitable results. In this article, we propose the use of nonparametric tests based on the difference between weighted cumulative mean functions for comparing two mean functions with an adjustment for difference in the timing of termination events. We also derive the asymptotic null distributions of the test statistics and examine their small sample properties through simulations. We apply our method to data from a study of liver cirrhosis.  相似文献

We apply the well known Gini index to the measurement of concentration in survival times within groups of patients, and as a way to compare the distribution of survival times across groups of patients in clinical studies. In particular, we propose an estimator of a restricted version of the index from right censored data. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the resulting Gini statistic, and construct an estimator for its asymptotic variance. We use these results to propose a novel test for differences in the heterogeneity of survival distributions, which may suggest the presence of a differential treatment effect for some groups of patients. We focus in particular on traditional and generalized cure rate models, i.e., mixture models with a distribution of the lifetimes of the cured patients that is either degenerate at infinity or has a density. Results from a simulation study suggest that the Gini index is useful in some situations, and that it should be considered together with existing tests (in particular, the Log-rank, Wilcoxon, and Gray–Tsiatis tests). Use of the test is illustrated on the classic data arising from the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group melanoma clinical trial E1690.  相似文献

The parametric bootstrap tests and the asymptotic or approximate tests for detecting difference of two Poisson means are compared. The test statistics used are the Wald statistics with and without log-transformation, the Cox F statistic and the likelihood ratio statistic. It is found that the type I error rate of an asymptotic/approximate test may deviate too much from the nominal significance level α under some situations. It is recommended that we should use the parametric bootstrap tests, under which the four test statistics are similarly powerful and their type I error rates are all close to α. We apply the tests to breast cancer data and injurious motor vehicle crash data.  相似文献

We describe some simple methods for improving the performance of stationarity tests (i.e., tests that have a stationary null and a unit-root alternative). Specifically, we increase the rate of convergence of the test under the unit-root alternative from O p(T) to O p (T 2), then suggest an optimal method of selecting the order of the autoregressive component in the fitted autoregressive integrated moving average model on which the test is based. Simulation evidence suggests that these modifications work well. We apply the modified procedure to U.S. monthly macroeconomic data and uncover new evidence of a unit root in unemployment.  相似文献
