Two years of rainfall acidity data for the eastern United States were analyzed. The data consist of rainfall-event pH measurements from a nine station monitoring network. A spatio-temporal stochastic model, including deterministic components for seasonal variation and rainfall washout, and stochastic components for spatial, temporal, and measurement variation, was fitted to the data. The fitted autocorrelation structure from this model was used, in the process known as Kriging, to obtain BLUE contour maps of seasonal and rainfall adjusted yearly average pH over the monitoring region.  相似文献

The Net Ecosystem Exchange describes the net carbon dioxide flux between an ecosystem and the atmosphere and is a key quantity in climate change studies and in political negotiations. This paper provides a spatio-temporal statistical framework, which is able to infer the Net Ecosystem Exchange from remotely-sensed carbon dioxide ground concentrations together with data on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, the Gross Primary Production and the land cover classification. The model is based on spatial and temporal latent random effects, that act as space–time varying coefficients, which allows for a flexible modeling of the spatio-temporal auto- and cross-correlation structure. The intra- and inter-annual variations of the Net Ecosystem Exchange are evaluated and dynamic maps are provided on a nearly global grid and in intervals of 16 days.  相似文献

Most applications in spatial statistics involve modeling of complex spatial–temporal dependency structures, and many of the problems of space and time modeling can be overcome by using separable processes. This subclass of spatial–temporal processes has several advantages, including rapid fitting and simple extensions of many techniques developed and successfully used in time series and classical geostatistics. In particular, a major advantage of these processes is that the covariance matrix for a realization can be expressed as the Kronecker product of two smaller matrices that arise separately from the temporal and purely spatial processes, and hence its determinant and inverse are easily determinable. However, these separable models are not always realistic, and there are no formal tests for separability of general spatial–temporal processes. We present here a formal method to test for separability. Our approach can be also used to test for lack of stationarity of the process. The beauty of our approach is that by using spectral methods the mechanics of the test can be reduced to a simple two-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedure. The approach we propose is based on only one realization of the spatial–temporal process. We apply the statistical methods proposed here to test for separability and stationarity of spatial–temporal ozone fields using data provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  相似文献

Hierarchical spatio-temporal models allow for the consideration and estimation of many sources of variability. A general spatio-temporal model can be written as the sum of a spatio-temporal trend and a spatio-temporal random effect. When spatial locations are considered to be homogeneous with respect to some exogenous features, the groups of locations may share a common spatial domain. Differences between groups can be highlighted both in the large-scale, spatio-temporal component and in the spatio-temporal dependence structure. When these differences are not included in the model specification, model performance and spatio-temporal predictions may be weak. This paper proposes a method for evaluating and comparing models that progressively include group differences. Hierarchical modeling under a Bayesian perspective is followed, allowing flexible models and the statistical assessment of results based on posterior predictive distributions. This procedure is applied to tropospheric ozone data in the Italian Emilia–Romagna region for 2001, where 30 monitoring sites are classified according to environmental laws into two groups by their relative position with respect to traffic emissions.  相似文献

Abstract.  Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique for studying the active human brain. During the fMRI experiment, a sequence of MR images is obtained, where the brain is represented as a set of voxels. The data obtained are a realization of a complex spatio-temporal process with many sources of variation, both biological and technical. We present a spatio-temporal point process model approach for fMRI data where the temporal and spatial activation are modelled simultaneously. It is possible to analyse other characteristics of the data than just the locations of active brain regions, such as the interaction between the active regions. We discuss both classical statistical inference and Bayesian inference in the model. We analyse simulated data without repeated stimuli both for location of the activated regions and for interactions between the activated regions. An example of analysis of fMRI data, using this approach, is presented.  相似文献

Model comparison for a complex ecological system   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary.  The ecological consequences of climate change and its interaction with other environmental pressures, such as nutrient pollution, are little understood. For freshwater ecosystems, knowledge of these combined effects is required for water resource management and in particular for successful implementation of the European Community Water Framework Directive 2000, which requires that all surface-waters should be at, or above, 'good status' by 2016. Statistical analysis of detailed long-term environmental data sets can be used to explore these combined effects. Loch Leven (Scotland) has been routinely monitored since 1967, providing one of the largest and most extensive of such data sets. Over this period there has been evidence of climate change and a period of eutrophication and recovery at the loch. Transfer functions, additive models and varying-coefficient models are used to explore the complex ecological system at Loch Leven with the aim of obtaining insight into the combined effects of climate change and eutrophication on water quality.  相似文献

In environmetrics, interest often centres around the development of models and methods for making inference on observed point patterns assumed to be generated by latent spatial or spatio‐temporal processes, which may have a hierarchical structure. In this research, motivated by the analysis of spatio‐temporal storm cell data, we generalize the Neyman–Scott parent–child process to account for hierarchical clustering. This is accomplished by allowing the parents to follow a log‐Gaussian Cox process thereby incorporating correlation and facilitating inference at all levels of the hierarchy. This approach is applied to monthly storm cell data from the Bismarck, North Dakota radar station from April through August 2003 and we compare these results to simpler cluster processes to demonstrate the advantages of accounting for both levels of correlation present in these hierarchically clustered point patterns. Distance sampling and capture–recapture are the two most widely used wildlife abundance estimation methods. capture–recapture methods have only recently incorporated models for spatial distribution and there is an increasing tendency for distance sampling methods to incorporated spatial models rather than to rely on partly design-based spatial inference. In this overview we show how spatial models are central to modern distance sampling and that spatial capture–recapture models arise as an extension of distance sampling methods. Depending on the type of data recorded, they can be viewed as particular kinds of hierarchical binary regression, Poisson regression, survival or time-to-event models, with individuals’ locations as latent variables and a spatial model as the latent variable distribution. Incorporation of spatial models in these two methods provides new opportunities for drawing explicitly spatial inferences. Areas of likely future development include more sophisticated spatial and spatio-temporal modelling of individuals’ locations and movements, new methods for integrating spatial capture–recapture and other kinds of ecological survey data, and methods for dealing with the recapture uncertainty that often arise when “capture” consists of detection by a remote device like a camera trap or microphone.  相似文献

There is by now a substantial literature on spatio-temporal modeling. However, to date, there exists essentially no literature which addresses the issue of process change from a certain time. In fact, if we look at change points for purely time series data, the customary form is to propose a model involving a mean or level shift. We see little attempting to capture a change in association structure. Part of the concern is how to specify flexible ways to bridge the association across the time point and still ensure that a proper joint distribution has been defined for all of the data. Introducing a spatial component evidently adds further complication. We want to allow for a change-point reflecting change in both temporal and spatial association. In this paper we propose a constructive, flexible model formulation through additive specifications. We also demonstrate how computational concerns benefit from the availability of temporal order. Finally, we illustrate with several simulated datasets to examine the capability of the model to detect different types of structural changes.  相似文献

We postulate a dynamic spatio-temporal model with constant covariate effect but with varying spatial effect over time and varying temporal effect across locations. To mitigate the effect of temporary structural change, the model can be estimated using the backfitting algorithm embedded with forward search algorithm and bootstrap. A simulation study is designed to evaluate structural optimality of the model with the estimation procedure. The fitted model exhibit superior predictive ability relative to the linear model. The proposed algorithm also consistently produced lower relative bias and standard errors for the spatial parameter estimates. While additional neighbourhoods do not necessarily improve predictive ability of the model, it trims down relative bias on the parameter estimates, specially for spatial parameter. Location of the temporary structural change along with the degree of structural change contributes to lower relative bias of parameter estimates and in better predictive ability of the model. The estimation procedure is able to produce parameter estimates that are robust to the occurrence of temporary structural change.  相似文献

In disease mapping, health outcomes measured at the same spatial locations may be correlated, so one can consider joint modeling the multivariate health outcomes accounting for their dependence. The general approaches often used for joint modeling include shared component models and multivariate models. An alternative way to model the association between two health outcomes, when one outcome can naturally serve as a covariate of the other, is to use ecological regression model. For example, in our application, preterm birth (PTB) can be treated as a predictor for low birth weight (LBW) and vice versa. Therefore, we proposed to blend the ideas from joint modeling and ecological regression methods to jointly model the relative risks for LBW and PTBs over the health districts in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 2000–2010. This approach is helpful when proxy of areal-level contextual factors can be derived based on the outcomes themselves when direct information on risk factors are not readily available. Our results indicate that the proposed approach improves the model fit when compared with the conventional joint modeling methods. Further, we showed that when no strong spatial autocorrelation is present, joint outcome modeling using only independent error terms can still provide a better model fit when compared with the separate modeling.  相似文献

Bayesian palaeoclimate reconstruction   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary.  We consider the problem of reconstructing prehistoric climates by using fossil data that have been extracted from lake sediment cores. Such reconstructions promise to provide one of the few ways to validate modern models of climate change. A hierarchical Bayesian modelling approach is presented and its use, inversely, is demonstrated in a relatively small but statistically challenging exercise: the reconstruction of prehistoric climate at Glendalough in Ireland from fossil pollen. This computationally intensive method extends current approaches by explicitly modelling uncertainty and reconstructing entire climate histories. The statistical issues that are raised relate to the use of compositional data (pollen) with covariates (climate) which are available at many modern sites but are missing for the fossil data. The compositional data arise as mixtures and the missing covariates have a temporal structure. Novel aspects of the analysis include a spatial process model for compositional data, local modelling of lattice data, the use, as a prior, of a random walk with long-tailed increments, a two-stage implementation of the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and a fast approximate procedure for cross-validation in inverse problems. We present some details, contrasting its reconstructions with those which have been generated by a method in use in the palaeoclimatology literature. We suggest that the method provides a basis for resolving important challenging issues in palaeoclimate research. We draw attention to several challenging statistical issues that need to be overcome.  相似文献

As ecological data sets increase in spatial and temporal extent with the advent of new remote sensing platforms and long-term monitoring networks, there is increasing interest in forecasting ecological processes. Such forecasts require realistic initial conditions over complete spatial domains. Typically, data sources are incomplete in space, and the processes include complicated dynamical interactions across physical and biological variables. This suggests that data assimilation, whereby observations are fused with mechanistic models, is the most appropriate means of generating complete initial conditions. Often, the mechanistic models used for these procedures are very expensive computationally. We demonstrate a rank-reduced approach for ecological data assimilation whereby the mechanistic model is based on a statistical emulator. Critically, the rank-reduction and emulator construction are linked and, by utilizing a hierarchical framework, uncertainty associated with the dynamical emulator can be accounted for. This provides a so-called “weak-constraint” data assimilation procedure. This approach is demonstrated on a high-dimensional multivariate coupled biogeochemical ocean process.  相似文献

Seasonality and Return Periods of Landfalling Atlantic Basin Hurricanes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper studies the annual arrival cycle and return period properties of landfalling Atlantic Basin hurricanes. A non-homogeneous Poisson process with a periodic intensity function is used to model the annual cycle of hurricane arrival times. Wind speed and central pressure return periods and non-encounter probabilities are estimated by combining the Poisson arrival model with extreme value peaks-over-threshold methods. The data used in this study contain all Atlantic Basin hurricanes that have made landfall in the contiguous United States during the years 1935–98 inclusive.  相似文献

In many research fields, scientific questions are investigated by analyzing data collected over space and time, usually at fixed spatial locations and time steps and resulting in geo-referenced time series. In this context, it is of interest to identify potential partitions of the space and study their evolution over time. A finite space-time mixture model is proposed to identify level-based clusters in spatio-temporal data and study their temporal evolution along the time frame. We anticipate space-time dependence by introducing spatio-temporally varying mixing weights to allocate observations at nearby locations and consecutive time points with similar cluster’s membership probabilities. As a result, a clustering varying over time and space is accomplished. Conditionally on the cluster’s membership, a state-space model is deployed to describe the temporal evolution of the sites belonging to each group. Fully posterior inference is provided under a Bayesian framework through Monte Carlo Markov chain algorithms. Also, a strategy to select the suitable number of clusters based upon the posterior temporal patterns of the clusters is offered. We evaluate our approach through simulation experiments, and we illustrate using air quality data collected across Europe from 2001 to 2012, showing the benefit of borrowing strength of information across space and time.  相似文献

When spatial data are correlated, currently available data‐driven smoothing parameter selection methods for nonparametric regression will often fail to provide useful results. The authors propose a method that adjusts the generalized cross‐validation criterion for the effect of spatial correlation in the case of bivariate local polynomial regression. Their approach uses a pilot fit to the data and the estimation of a parametric covariance model. The method is easy to implement and leads to improved smoothing parameter selection, even when the covariance model is misspecified. The methodology is illustrated using water chemistry data collected in a survey of lakes in the Northeastern United States.  相似文献

This paper proposes a linear mixed model (LMM) with spatial effects, trend, seasonality and outliers for spatio-temporal time series data. A linear trend, dummy variables for seasonality, a binary method for outliers and a multivariate conditional autoregressive (MCAR) model for spatial effects are adopted. A Bayesian method using Gibbs sampling in Markov Chain Monte Carlo is used for parameter estimation. The proposed model is applied to forecast rice and cassava yields, a spatio-temporal data type, in Thailand. The data have been extracted from the Office of Agricultural Economics, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand. The proposed model is compared with our previous model, an LMM with MCAR, and a log transformed LMM with MCAR. We found that the proposed model is the most appropriate, using the mean absolute error criterion. It fits the data very well in both the fitting part and the validation part for both rice and cassava. Therefore, it is recommended to be a primary model for forecasting these types of spatio-temporal time series data.  相似文献

Carbon dioxide is one of the major contributors to Global Warming. In the present study, we develop a differential equation to model the carbon dioxide emission data in the atmosphere using functional linear regression approach. In the proposed method, a differential operator is defined as data smoother and we use the penalized least square fitting criteria to smooth the data. The profile error sum of squares is optimized to estimate the differential operators using functional regression. The solution of the developed differential equation estimates and predicts the rate of change of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at a particular time. We apply the proposed model to fit the emission of carbon dioxide data in the continental United States. Numerical simulations of a number of test cases depict a satisfactory agreement with real data.  相似文献

Separable spatio-temporal covariance models, defined as the product of purely spatial and purely temporal covariance functions, are often used in practice, but frequently they only represent a convenient assumption. On the other hand, non-separable models are receiving a lot of attention, since they are more flexible to handle empirical covariances showed up in applications. Different forms of non-separability for space–time covariance functions have been recently defined in the literature. In this paper, the notion of positive and negative non-separability is further formalized in order to distinguish between pointwise and uniform non-separability. Various well-known non-separable space–time stationary covariance models are analyzed and classified by using the new definition of non-separability. In particular, wide classes of non-separable spatio-temporal covariance functions, able to capture positive and negative non-separability, are proposed and some examples of these classes are given. General results concerning the non-separability of spatial–temporal covariance functions obtained by a linear combination of spatial–temporal covariance functions and some stability properties are also presented. These results can be helpful to generate as well as to select appropriate covariance models for describing space–time data.  相似文献
