This article reviews the exciting and rapidly expanding literature on realized volatility. After presenting a general univariate framework for estimating realized volatilities, a simple discrete time model is presented in order to motivate the main results. A continuous time specification provides the theoretical foundation for the main results in this literature. Cases with and without microstructure noise are considered, and it is shown how microstructure noise can cause severe problems in terms of consistent estimation of the daily realized volatility. Independent and dependent noise processes are examined. The most important methods for providing consistent estimators are presented, and a critical exposition of different techniques is given. The finite sample properties are discussed in comparison with their asymptotic properties. A multivariate model is presented to discuss estimation of the realized covariances. Various issues relating to modelling and forecasting realized volatilities are considered. The main empirical findings using univariate and multivariate methods are summarized.  相似文献

Abstract

Although stochastic volatility and GARCH (generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity) models have successfully described the volatility dynamics of univariate asset returns, extending them to the multivariate models with dynamic correlations has been difficult due to several major problems. First, there are too many parameters to estimate if available data are only daily returns, which results in unstable estimates. One solution to this problem is to incorporate additional observations based on intraday asset returns, such as realized covariances. Second, since multivariate asset returns are not synchronously traded, we have to use the largest time intervals such that all asset returns are observed to compute the realized covariance matrices. However, in this study, we fail to make full use of the available intraday informations when there are less frequently traded assets. Third, it is not straightforward to guarantee that the estimated (and the realized) covariance matrices are positive definite.

Our contributions are the following: (1) we obtain the stable parameter estimates for the dynamic correlation models using the realized measures, (2) we make full use of intraday informations by using pairwise realized correlations, (3) the covariance matrices are guaranteed to be positive definite, (4) we avoid the arbitrariness of the ordering of asset returns, (5) we propose the flexible correlation structure model (e.g., such as setting some correlations to be zero if necessary), and (6) the parsimonious specification for the leverage effect is proposed. Our proposed models are applied to the daily returns of nine U.S. stocks with their realized volatilities and pairwise realized correlations and are shown to outperform the existing models with respect to portfolio performances.  相似文献

I explain why at-the-money implied volatility is a biased and inefficient forecast of future realized volatility using the insights from the empirical option-pricing literature. First, I explain how the risk premia, which manifest themselves through disparity between objective and risk-neutral probability measures, lead to the disparity between realized and implied volatilities. Second, I show that this disparity is a function of the latent spot volatility, which I estimate using the historical volatility and high–low range. An empirical exercise that is based on at-the-money implied volatility series of foreign currencies and stock market indexes, is supportive of my risk premia-based explanation of the bias.  相似文献

The Volatility of Realized Volatility   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
In recent years, with the availability of high-frequency financial market data modeling realized volatility has become a new and innovative research direction. The construction of “observable” or realized volatility series from intra-day transaction data and the use of standard time-series techniques has lead to promising strategies for modeling and predicting (daily) volatility. In this article, we show that the residuals of commonly used time-series models for realized volatility and logarithmic realized variance exhibit non-Gaussianity and volatility clustering. We propose extensions to explicitly account for these properties and assess their relevance for modeling and forecasting realized volatility. In an empirical application for S&P 500 index futures we show that allowing for time-varying volatility of realized volatility and logarithmic realized variance substantially improves the fit as well as predictive performance. Furthermore, the distributional assumption for residuals plays a crucial role in density forecasting.  相似文献

For financial volatilities such as realized volatility and volatility index, a new parametric quantile forecast strategy is proposed, focusing on forecast interval and value at risk (VaR) forecast. This fully addresses asymmetries in 3 parts: mean, volatility and distribution. The asymmetries are addressed by the LHAR (leverage heterogeneous autoregressive) model of McAleer and Medeiros (2008) and Corsi and Reno (2009) for the mean part, by the EGARCH model for the volatility part, and by the skew-t distribution for the error distribution part. The method is applied to the realized volatilities and the volatility indexes of the US S&P 500 index, the US NASDAQ index, the Korea KOSPI index in which significant asymmetries are identified. Considerable out-of-sample forecast improvements of the forecast interval and VaR forecast are demonstrated for the volatilities: forecast intervals of volatilities have better coverages with shorter lengths and VaR forecasts of volatility indexes have better violations if asymmetries are properly addressed rather than ignored. The proposed parametric method reveals considerably better out-of-sample performance than the recently proposed semiparametric quantile regression approach of Zikes and Barunik (2016).  相似文献

No-constant strategy is considered for the heterogenous autoregressive (HAR) model of Corsi, which is motivated by smaller biases of its estimated HAR coefficients than those of the constant HAR model. The no-constant model produces better forecasts than the constant model for four real datasets of the realized volatilities (RVs) of some major assets. Robustness of forecast improvement is verified for other functions of realized variance and log RV and for the extended datasets of all 20 RVs of Oxford-Man realized library. A Monte Carlo simulation also reveals improved forecasts for some historic HAR model estimated by Corsi.  相似文献

Abstract

Based on the fact that realized measures of volatility are affected by measurement errors, we introduce a new family of discrete-time stochastic volatility models having two measurement equations relating both observed returns and realized measures to the latent conditional variance. A semi-analytical option pricing framework is developed for this class of models. In addition, we provide analytical filtering and smoothing recursions for the basic specification of the model, and an effective MCMC algorithm for its richer variants. The empirical analysis shows the effectiveness of filtering and smoothing realized measures in inflating the latent volatility persistence—the crucial parameter in pricing Standard and Poor’s 500 Index options.  相似文献

This article evaluates the economic benefit of methods that have been suggested to optimally sample (in an MSE sense) high-frequency return data for the purpose of realized variance/covariance estimation in the presence of market microstructure noise (Bandi and Russell, 2005a, 2008). We compare certainty equivalents derived from volatility-timing trading strategies relying on optimally-sampled realized variances and covariances, on realized variances and covariances obtained by sampling every 5 minutes, and on realized variances and covariances obtained by sampling every 15 minutes. In our sample, we show that a risk-averse investor who is given the option of choosing variance/covariance forecasts derived from MSE-based optimal sampling methods versus forecasts obtained from 5- and 15-minute intervals (as generally proposed in the literature) would be willing to pay up to about 80 basis points per year to achieve the level of utility that is guaranteed by optimal sampling. We find that the gains yielded by optimal sampling are economically large, statistically significant, and robust to realistic transaction costs.  相似文献

High-frequency trading activities are one of the common phenomena in nowadays financial markets. Enormous amounts of high-frequency trading data are generated by huge numbers of market participants in every trading day. The availability of this information allows researchers to further examine the statistical properties of informationally efficient market hypothesis (EMH). Heterogenous market hypothesis (HMH) is one of the important extensions of EMH literature. HMH introduced nonlinear trading behaviors of heterogenous market participants instead of normality assumption under the EMH homogenous market participants. In this study, we attempt to explore more high-frequency volatility estimators in the HMH examination. These include the bipower, tripower, and quadpower variation integrated volatility estimates using Heterogenous AutoRegressive (HAR) models. The empirical findings show that these alternatives multipower variation (MPV) estimators provide better estimation and out-of-sample forecast evaluations as compared to the standard realized volatility. In other words, the usage of MPV estimators is able to better explain the HMH statistically. At last, a market risk determination is illustrated using value-at-risk approach.  相似文献

We introduce the realized exponential GARCH model that can use multiple realized volatility measures for the modeling of a return series. The model specifies the dynamic properties of both returns and realized measures, and is characterized by a flexible modeling of the dependence between returns and volatility. We apply the model to 27 stocks and an exchange traded fund that tracks the S&P 500 index and find specifications with multiple realized measures that dominate those that rely on a single realized measure. The empirical analysis suggests some convenient simplifications and highlights the advantages of the new specification.  相似文献

This paper presents limit theorems of realized multipower variation for semimartingales and Gaussian integral processes with jumps observed in high frequency. In particular, we obtain a central limit theorem of realized multipower variation for semimartingale where some of the powers equal one and the others are less one. Convergence in probability and central limit theorems of realized threshold bipower variation for Gaussian integral processes with jumps are also obtained. These results provide new statistical tools to analyze and test the long memory effect in high frequency situation.  相似文献

The challenge of modeling, estimating, testing, and forecasting financial volatility is both intellectually worthwhile and also central to the successful analysis of financial returns and optimal investment strategies. In each of the three primary areas of volatility modeling, namely, conditional (or generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity) volatility, stochastic volatility and realized volatility (RV), numerous univariate volatility models of individual financial assets and multivariate volatility models of portfolios of assets have been established. This special issue has eleven innovative articles, eight of which are focused directly on RV and three on long memory, while two are concerned with both RV and long memory.  相似文献

Realized volatility computed from high-frequency data is an important measure for many applications in finance, and its dynamics have been widely investigated. Recent notable advances that perform well include the heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) model which can approximate long memory, is very parsimonious, is easy to estimate, and features good out-of-sample performance. We prove that the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) recovers the lags structure of the HAR model asymptotically if it is the true model, and we present Monte Carlo evidence in finite samples. The HAR model's lags structure is not fully in agreement with the one found using the Lasso on real data. Moreover, we provide empirical evidence that there are two clear breaks in structure for most of the assets we consider. These results bring into question the appropriateness of the HAR model for realized volatility. Finally, in an out-of-sample analysis, we show equal performance of the HAR model and the Lasso approach.  相似文献

This work presents a new method to deal with missing values in financial time series. Previous works are generally based in state-space models and Kalman filter and few consider ARCH family models. The traditional approach is to bound the data together and perform the estimation without considering the presence of missing values. The existing methods generally consider missing values in the returns. The proposed method considers the presence of missing values in the price of the assets instead of in the returns. The performance of the method in estimating the parameters and the volatilities is evaluated through a Monte Carlo simulation. Value at risk is also considered in the simulation. An empirical application to NASDAQ 100 Index series is presented.  相似文献

We study the simultaneous occurrence of long memory and nonlinear effects, such as parameter changes and threshold effects, in time series models and apply our modeling framework to daily realized measures of integrated variance. We develop asymptotic theory for parameter estimation and propose two model-building procedures. The methodology is applied to stocks of the Dow Jones Industrial Average during the period 2000 to 2009. We find strong evidence of nonlinear effects in financial volatility. An out-of-sample analysis shows that modeling these effects can improve forecast performance. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.  相似文献

Abstract

HYGARCH model is basically used to model long-range dependence in volatility. We propose Markov switch smooth-transition HYGARCH model, where the volatility in each state is a time-dependent convex combination of GARCH and FIGARCH. This model provides a flexible structure to capture different levels of volatilities and also short and long memory effects. The necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability is derived. Forecast of conditional variance is studied by using all past information through a parsimonious way. Bayesian estimations based on Gibbs sampling are provided. A simulation study has been given to evaluate the estimations and model stability. The competitive performance of the proposed model is shown by comparing it with the HYGARCH and smooth-transition HYGARCH models for some period of the S&P500 and Dow Jones industrial average indices based on volatility and value-at-risk forecasts.  相似文献
