The Coping With Discrimination Scale (CDS) shows promise as a self-report measure of strategies for coping with racial discrimination. To assess the psychometric properties of the measure for use with sexual minorities (i.e., gay, lesbian, bisexual, or GLB persons), a nonprobability sample of 371 GLB adults completed the instrument along with several standardized, self-report measures. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the five-factor structure of the original scale with the exclusion of five items. Adequate internal consistency reliability was found. Internalization, drug and alcohol use, and detachment subscales were correlated positively with measures of psychological distress and negatively with a measure of life satisfaction, providing evidence of construct validity. The education/advocacy and resistance subscales were largely unrelated to concurrently administered validation measures, consistent with prior findings. Coping strategy use varied as a function of primary sources of social support. The CDS appears to be a psychometrically sound measure of several discrimination coping strategies for use with sexual minorities. 相似文献

The importance of trust within health care is widely acknowledged. Measuring patients’ trust in health care systems may contribute to plans for the financing, delivery, and outcomes of health services. Although many scales are available to measure patient trust, less attention has been paid to the multidimensional nature of trust in health care systems. The purpose of this methodological study was to adapt the Multidimensional Trust in Health-Care Systems Scale into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties for a Turkish patient population. The scale was adapted into Turkish through a translation and back-translation process. The content validity of the scale was assessed using expert approval. The psychometric properties of the scale were investigated by collecting data from 232 hospitalised patients in Ankara during theperiod of 1 January–30 December 2010. An exploratory factor analysis identified that the eigenvalues for the three factors of the scale were 7.30, 2.61, and 1.21; these three factors explained 65 % of the variance. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated a sufficient model fit for the construct validity of the scale. Cronbach’s α for the total scale was 0.87, as well as 0.91, 0.82, and 0.61 for the three subscales; the Spearman-Brown split half reliability coefficient was 0.67. Despite the low internal consistency of the subscale 3, evidence from this study supports the validity and reliability of the Multidimensional Trust in Health-Care Systems Scale. This instrument can be used to measure multiple aspects of trust in the health care system; however, as trust is a contextual phenomenon, further work is needed to test the psychometric properties of this scale both in Turkish and different cultures. 相似文献

Subjective well-being is an increasingly common indicator of adequacy of psychiatric services. An easy-to-administer assessment
tool of subjective well-being that is conceptually sound, valid, and reliable is needed for use in persons with schizophrenia.
The purpose of this paper was to validate the 5-item Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)-Taiwan version for persons with schizophrenia
living in the community. Specifically, the internal consistency reliability, construct validity and criterion-related validity
were examined. Data were obtained from a total of 443 patients with schizophrenia at multiple areas of Taiwan. Item analysis
and confirmatory factor analysis were performed. The results revealed that the SWLS had good international consistency reliability
and suggested a single-factor structure in life satisfaction among this patient group. The SWLS has good criterion-related
validity with the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF). It is concluded that the SWLS
is a sound measurement to be used with persons with schizophrenia living in the community. 相似文献

In spite of the potential significance of sense of coherence (SOC) for adolescent health and well-being, the past decades have yielded limited progress in investigating the psychometric properties of the most used inventory measuring SOC, The Orientation of Life Questionnaire (OLQ) in adolescents. The present study aimed at investigating the factorial validity and reliability of the Norwegian version of the 13 item OLQ based on two adolescent samples 13–18 years from Norway. Concerning the dimensionality of the OLQ, two measurement models were tested using confirmatory factor analysis; a one-factor model and a three-factor-model. The results showed that a three-factor solution with correlated residual variances between item 2 and item 3 showed the best fit across the two adolescent samples, although five items revealed low factor loadings. The dimensions were highly correlated and showed adequate composite reliability. The present results indicate that the 13 item OLQ has potential as an instrument assessing SOC in adolescents. However, more psychometric testing of the instrument is required in reference to the modified factor structure and the low reliability found on some of the items in OLQ. 相似文献

In 2010 the Danish regions started a new program of public health surveillance in collaboration with the national and local health authorities using the short form health survey (SF-12) for measuring and reporting on health related quality of life among the Danish adult population. The instrument has not, however, been validated in a Danish setting. The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the physical component summary (PCS) and the mental component summary (MCS) score of the 12-item short form health survey (SF-12) in a sample from Central Denmark Region. A total of 26,397 persons above the age of 25 were included in the analyses. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach’s α. The validity was assessed using known-groups comparisons and convergent validity. The factor structure was investigated through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The Cronbach’s α showed high reliability with a score of 0.90 and 0.85 for PCS and MCS respectively. The SF-12 discriminated well with respect to gender, age, educational status and long term illness. Individual items correlated higher with own hypothesized scales than with other scales and summary measures corroborating the convergent validity. The EFA gave a two-factor structure. Irrespective of the chosen rotation method (varimax and oblimin) the items related to PCS loaded on one factor and the items related to MCS loaded on another factor. The factor structure was validated with acceptable model-fit values in CFA. The SF-12 instrument is a reliable and valid measure of health related quality of life among the population of Central Denmark Region. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to explore the factor structure of the Work-Family Balance Scale (WFBS) and examine its reliability
and validity in use in the urban Chinese population. The scale was validated using a sample of 605 urban Chinese residents
from 7 cities. Exploratory factor analysis identified two factors: work-family conflict and work-family enrichment. The WFBS
showed adequate reliability and concurrent validity. The WFBS is a reliable and valid instrument to measure work-family balance
for Chinese working parents. However, further examination of the scale is needed. 相似文献

Subjective vitality is an indicator of eudaimonic well-being that refers to the feeling of being alive and full of energy. According to Self-Determination Theory (SDT), awareness of what is truly occurring in the present is conducive to subjective vitality. The current study examined the construct validity of the Subjective Vitality Scale and its relation to sociodemographic variables and Experiential Self-Knowledge (ESK), a theoretically relevant awareness construct, in the Lebanese cultural context. A convenient sample of 301 Lebanese adults residing in the Greater Beirut Area completed the Arabic translations of the 6-item Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS) and the 13-item ESK Scale. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a unidimensional factor structure for the Arabic SVS. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses also provided evidence of configural, metric, structural, and scalar invariance across sex. With respect to sociodemographic variables, sex was the only significant correlate and predictor of subjective vitality, with males reporting greater levels of subjective vitality than females. Consistent with Self-Determination Theory (SDT), awareness as assessed by the ESK Scale was found to be a positive correlate and predictor of subjective vitality such that those who scored higher on experiential self-knowledge also reported greater levels of subjective vitality. These findings provide preliminary support for the construct validity of the Arabic translation of the SVS in the Lebanese context and highlight the potential role of awareness in eudaimonic well-being. 相似文献

The Psychological well being Inventory (PWBI) is a multidimensional instrument that has enjoyed widespread use in a variety
of research initiatives, from small-scale studies to national surveys. Recent empirical investigation of the measure has raised
questions about its validity. This study examines the factorial validity of the Environmental Mastery Scale of the PWBI, a
construct that receives much attention in mental health research. The results of a confirmatory factor analysis did not support
the unidimensional factor structure of the measure. Correlated uniqueness models were also examined, which did not reveal
evidence of a method effect. There are problems with the measure at the item level, which also raises significant questions
about the underlying theory of its parent measure.

This study introduces the Satisfaction with Life Scale adapted for Children (SWLS-C) and presents psychometric findings regarding
its validation. The SWLS-C was adapted from the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS; Diener et al. 1985), which is one of the most commonly used measures to assess satisfaction with life in adults. Three subject matter experts
adapted the SWLS by changing the wording of the item stem and response format in order to make it more understandable for
children. A stratified random sample of 1,233 students (48% girls) in grades 4–7 (mean age 11 years and 7 months) provided
data on the SWLS-C and measures of optimism, self-concept, self-efficacy, depression, emphatic concern, and perspective taking.
The SWLS-C demonstrated a unidimensional factor structure and high internal consistency. Furthermore, differential item functioning
and differential scale functioning analyses indicated that the SWLS-C measures satisfaction with life in the same way for
different groups of children (i.e., with regard to gender, first language learned at home—English vs. other language(s) than
English—and across different grades) at the item and at the scale level. Associations between scores on the SWLS-C and demographic
variables were statistically non-significant or of small effect size. In addition, the SWLS-C showed evidence of convergent
and discriminant validity in relation to the other measures. Our results indicate that the SWLS-C is a psychometrically sound
instrument that demonstrated evidence of construct validity for this age group. Limitations and future directions are discussed. 相似文献

This paper reports the development and validation of the Neighborhood Observation Scale, a 41 item measure of neighborhood
physical appearance, social appearance, safety, and amenities. Three independent ratings were collected on each of 244 neighborhoods
in 132 census block groups in five South Carolina counties, for a total of 732 observations. Inter-rater reliability analysis
showed 92.6% agreement among at least two raters and an intraclass correlation of .54, indicating acceptable reliability.
Exploratory factor analysis extracted eight factors for neighborhood physical appearance, school/park/public space physical
appearance, neighborhood social appearance, indicated social engagement, observed social engagement, park/public space social
engagement, resident watchfulness, and neighborhood safety risk. A follow-up confirmatory factor analysis supported the eight
factor structure. Reliability analysis produced alpha coefficients ranging from .55 to .94 for the eight factors, indicating
reliability for use as sub-scales. Convergent validity was determined by generally acceptable correlations of the factor sub-scales
with measures of neighborhood distress, rates of child maltreatment and ICD-9-CM coded child injuries, and resident perceptions
of neighboring, collective efficacy, reciprocal helping, and children’s safety in the home. Implications for research and
policy and program development are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study describes the process of developing and validating the Sexual Prejudice in Sport Scale (SPSS), which is a multidimensional instrument developed to assess attitudes toward lesbians and gay men (LG) in sports. The authors conducted two studies: first, to establish the factor structure of the SPSS on 297 heterosexual athletes; and, second, to test the reliability and validity of the resulting 19-item scale on a sample of 311 heterosexual and 160 LG athletes. Exploratory factor analysis of an initial item pool yielded three factors: open rejection, which assesses the blatant prejudice expressed toward LG people; denial of visibility, which evaluates attitude toward the coming out of LG people; and gendering performance, which corresponds to gender stereotypes about performance/skills of LG people. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to assess the stability of the SPSS. The authors documented internal consistency, test-retest stability, and convergent/divergent validity. Implications and directions for future research are discussed. 相似文献

The Volunteer Satisfaction Index: A Validation Study in the Chinese Cultural Context 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using a Hong Kong-sourced sample of 261 participants, this study set out to validate the Volunteer Satisfaction Index (VSI)
in the Chinese cultural context and to evaluate its psychometric properties. The VSI was originally developed by Galindo-Kuhn
and Guzley (2001) to measure the outcomes of volunteer experiences. In this study, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) yielded a different factor
structure from that proposed by the scale developer. The three factors found were personal gain, relationship within organization and relationship with peers. Cronbach’s alpha values were high for all three subscales. Results from correlation and regression analysis also confirmed
the construct and criterion-related validity of the scale. Thus, the reliability and validity of the scale were confirmed.
Implications for the assessment of volunteer satisfaction and further directions for cross-cultural studies on related topics
are discussed. 相似文献

This research details the development of a new instrument designed to measure attitudes toward same-sex marriage. Participants were 615 heterosexual women and men, drawn from both student and nonstudent adult populations. Four studies were conducted for the purpose of developing the scale and to establish its psychometric properties. The resulting Attitudes Toward Same-Sex Marriage Scale (ATSM) consists of 17 items, has a one-dimensional factor structure, and exhibits a high degree of reliability. Additional analyses established the construct validity of the ATSM where ATSM scores were highly correlated with scores on the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (Herek, 1988). ATSM scores followed predicted correlational patterns with select demographics, including educational attainment, religiosity, and political conservatism. The usefulness of this new measure in survey research is discussed. 相似文献

Application and testing the reliability and validity of a modified version of Herek's attitudes toward lesbians and gay men scale in China 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The present study was the first attempt to test the reliability and validity of Herek's Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale (ATLG; Herek, 1988) in the Chinese population. Participants (n = 2,391 for the field trials and n = 200 for test-retest reliability) were asked to complete the translated, slightly modified version of the ATLG. The resulting ATLG has a two-dimensional factor structure as well as good validity and reliability in the Chinese culture. ATLG scores followed distinct patterns according sex and level of education that were consistent with previous studies in other populations. The significance of these findings in Chinese culture is discussed. 相似文献

As the existing scales to measure loneliness are almost all Western and there is no single scale developed cross-culturally
for this purpose, this study is designed to develop a reliable and valid scale to measure the experience of loneliness of
individuals from individualistic or collectivistic cultures. There are three samples for this study with a total of 495 male
and female international (n = 202) and local (n = 293) participants (Age range 19–60 years). An initial pool of 70 item scale was administered to a sample of 202 participants
(20–60 years old) from 41 countries of the world with collectivistic and individualistic cultures and the data was subjected
to factor analysis using principal component extraction. Evidence shows a unidimensional factor loading. The extracted items
were subjected to reliability test and 25 items were obtained for the final scale of the UP Loneliness Assessment Scale (UPLAS)
with a Cronbach alpha of .93. Further analyses show the following findings: UPLAS has a significant correlation with R-UCLA
Loneliness Scale providing evidence for its moderate concurrent validity; there is a significant and inverse relationship
between the measures of UPLAS and Subjective Happiness Scale establishing its higher discriminant validity; UPLAS scores are
significantly correlated with the measures of negative self-perceptions, depression, and several emotional states associated
to loneliness and thus establishing a higher convergent validity. The designing of the UP Loneliness Assessment Scale as a
cross-cultural measurement tool may contribute to more research interests in the domain of “negative perceptions” as the most
contributing factor to loneliness across cultures. 相似文献

The International Well-being Index (IWI) measures both personal and national well-being. It comprises two subscales: the Personal
Well-being Index (PWI) and the National Well-being Index (NWI). The aim of this paper is to test the psychometric properties
(validity and reliability) of the translated scale in Austria. Convergent validity is assessed using the Scales of Psychological
Well-Being, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale. In addition, a Visual–Analog Scales
capturing “satisfaction with life as a whole” was applied. The participants were 581 students of the Medical University Innsbruck
(female: 47.7%; age: 23.2 ± 3.7). Internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) of the IWI was for both scales > .70 (PWI: .85; NWI:
.83). The exploratory factor analysis of the IWI identified a 2-factor-structure identical with the two scales of the IWI
explaining 54.2% of the variance. The convergent validity hypotheses were confirmed, construct validity was partly confirmed
for the PWI being a deconstruction of a first factor called “satisfaction with life” (38.1% explained variance). Happy participants
scored higher on the PWI (84.3 ± 7.9 vs. 68.7 ± 13.7; p < .001) and NWI (64.3 ± 15.8 vs. 57.9 ± 15.1; p < .001) scores than unhappy participants. It is concluded that the Austrian version of the IWI is a reliable and valid instrument
to assess personal and national well-being. Further studies including a representative sample should be carried out on a recurring
basis to use the IWI as an indicator for social science research in Austria. 相似文献

Attitudes toward homosexuality vary across cultures, with the legal and societal position being rather complicated in India. This study describes the process of developing and validating a Likert-type scale to assess attitudes toward homosexuality among heterosexuals. Phase 1 describes the development of the scale. Items were written based on thematic analysis of narratives generated from 50 college students and reviewing existing scales. After administering the 70-item scale to 68 participants, item analysis yielded 20 statements with item-total correlations over .70. Cronbach’s alpha was .97. In Phase 2, the 20-item Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Scale for Indians (AHSI) was administered to 142 participants. Analysis yielded a corrected split-half correlation of .91. Further, AHSI discriminated between women and men; between liberal arts and STEM/business students; and those who reported interpersonal contact with gay men and lesbian women and those who did not. The scale has satisfactory reliability and shows promising construct validity. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to assess the effective measurement range of Ryff’s Psychological Well-being scales (PWB). It applies
normal ogive item response theory (IRT) methodology using factor analysis procedures for ordinal data based on a limited information
estimation approach. The data come from a sample of 1,179 women participating in a midlife follow-up of a national birth cohort
study in the UK. The PWB scales incorporate six dimensions: autonomy, positive relations with others, environmental mastery,
personal growth, purpose in life and self-acceptance. Scale information functions were calculated to derive standard errors
of measurement for estimated scores on each dimension. Construct variance was distinguished from method variance by inclusion
of method factors from item wording (positive versus negative). Our IRT analysis revealed that the PWB measures well-being
most accurately in the middle range of the score distribution, i.e. for women with average well-being. Score precision diminished
at higher levels of well-being, and low well-being was measured more reliably than high well-being. A second-order well-being
factor loaded by four of the dimensions achieved higher measurement precision and greater score accuracy across a wider range
than any individual dimension. Future development of well-being scales should be designed to include items that are able to
discriminate at high levels of well-being. 相似文献

The aim of this paper was to validate the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), presenting
evidence of its reliability and construct and criterion-related validity. A large Brazilian sample (2,180 participants), from
five different populations (undergraduate and high school students, general population, elementary school teachers, and physicians),
was considered. The results confirmed the single factorial structure and reliability (0.77 < Cronbach’s α < 0.88, mean α = 0.81)
of the SWLS. Supporting its criterion-related validity, the SWLS correlated positively with positive affect and negatively
with both negative affect and psychological distress across all five samples. The findings indicate that the Brazilian-Portuguese
version of the SWLS is a valid instrument to use with diverse Brazilian samples. 相似文献
