Juvenile justice—increasingly the service delivery point for adolescents with substance abuse and co-occurring problems lacking resources for other assistance—can be a model for improved and expanded, yet cost-effective, adolescent substance abuse treatment. An emergent standard of care challenges systemic inequities; a new service array facilitates dialogue among justice and treatment professionals, families, and the youth themselves. Such evidence-based practice—and the policy to implement it—have the power to transform disconnected laws, programs and professionals into an effective, efficient and successful community of responders, helping youth reclaim their lives while improving public health and public safety.

The article describes the policy-making structure which governs the reform of justice in Afghanistan. It is characterized
by an evolution from a bilateral to a multilateral approach, aimed at increasing the Afghan ownership. However, observing
the system ‘from within’, it seems currently ruled by a mixed regime, being still deeply influenced by external inputs. As
a consequence, the final outcome of the process remains uncertain.

Power disparities underlie many of the issues that couples bring for therapy. People in relationships are not equal; often
one partner is systematically conferred unearned advantage and dominance. This article synthesizes results from three qualitative
research studies to propose a social justice approach for clinical practice with couples. Interventions are suggested to keep
issues of power and privilege a central focus while addressing the ordinary issues partners present for therapy.

Plurality rule is mostly criticized from being capable of choosing an alternative considered as worst by a strict majority.
This paper considers elections in which the agenda consists of potential candidates strategically choosing whether or not
to enter the election. In this context, we examine the ability of scoring rules to fulfil the Condorcet criterion. We show
for the case of three potential candidates that Plurality rule is the only scoring rule that satisfies a version of the Condorcet
criterion in two cases: 1) when preferences are single-peaked and, 2) when preferences are single-dipped.

Current service delivery for at-risk youth is through four separate systems: special education; mental health and substance
abuse; juvenile justice; and child welfare. Many youth (and their families) are involved with more than one of these systems,
making early disability identification and subsequent systems coordination paramount in leading to more successful juvenile
court outcomes. This coordination is an important and prioritized public policy concern because a majority of youth (disproportionately
minority) within juvenile justice populations has been identified with mental health disorders, special education disabilities,
or maltreatment histories. This study of a unique sample of probation-supervised delinquent youths (n = 397) identifies these disabilities and their corresponding court supervision, detention, and incarceration outcomes for
a 48-month period in Cuyahoga County, Ohio (greater Cleveland). Within this youth sample over 32% had a special education
disability, over 39% had a mental health disorder, over 32% had a substance abuse disorder, and over 56% were victims of maltreatment.
Even higher disability rates were found for those youth who were subsequently detained or incarcerated. Many of these youth
had multiple disabilities (and subsequently poorer juvenile court outcomes) and were concurrently involved in more than one
disability service system. Policy and client services implications are reviewed and discussed.

In this note we identify and clarify a confusion that has arisen in the literature about the exact relationship between unitary
and collective models and what enters the Pareto weight and the sharing function. We suggest that we should denote as ‘unitary’
any model that leads to outcomes that satisfy the Slutsky conditions whether or not these outcomes depend on distribution
factors. In particular, income pooling is neither necessary nor sufficient for a unitary model. We also show that the presence
of prices or total expenditure in the sharing rule cannot be used as a test for a unitary model.

Do Work Demands and Resources Predict Work-to-Family Conflict and Facilitation? A Study of Iranian Male Employees 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
This study examined the effects of some work demands-resources on two dimensions of work-to-family interface among Iranian
employees. The results of canonical correlation and multiple-regression showed that among work resources (i.e., social support
and autonomy), social support was associated negatively with work-to-family conflict and autonomy was associated positively
with work-to-family facilitation. Also, among work demands (i.e., job demands and working hours), job demands were associated
with both work-to-family conflict and work-to-family facilitation. Unlike previous studies, working hours shows a positive
association with work-to-family facilitation, which may be explained by the specific cultural context in Iran. The findings
of the study will be of importance to employees and organizations.

This study investigates perceptions of workplace discrimination among racial minorities in Canada. Specifically, the study
examines how objective experiences of disadvantage and expectations for equity influence racial minorities’ perceptions of
discrimination. The results indicate that while both of these factors affect perceptions of discrimination, expectations for
equity may be especially important. Although new immigrants are among the most disadvantaged groups in the Canadian labor
market, they are less likely to perceive discrimination than longer term immigrants, who may have higher expectations for
equitable treatment. Education also increases the perception of discrimination among immigrants, perhaps due to the higher
expectations of educated immigrants. Lastly, objective income inequity is not found to be related to perceived discrimination.

Using a Latino-owned and -operated ethnic market in southern California as an ethnographic research site, we analyze and compare the interactions between foreign-born, Latina cashiers and their Latino and White customers. We ask two main questions: what is the nature of cashier–customer interactions, and what do they tell us about the social hierarchy in which they are embedded? While most studies of service interactions find that intraracial encounters are friendlier than interracial ones, the results of this study prove otherwise. We find that the Latina cashiers are routinely friendlier, more deferential, and extend the length of the interaction with their White customers. We conclude that Latina cashiers deliberately provide better service to their White customers because they feel that the patronage of White, middle-class shoppers raises their occupational status as well as the status of their workplace.

Theory suggests that individual performance pay increases effort but may reduce the incentive to help co-workers. In an original
survey of finance industry employees subject to individual performance pay, we demonstrate that those workers who report they
do not help co-workers earn significantly more. This result is particularly strong for those workers with the strongest individual
performance pay incentives. Moreover, when those workers report that their coworkers help them, they also earn significantly
more. These dual results are consistent with a strong incentive to free-ride on the helping effort of others in the face of
individual performance pay.

This paper analyzes how natural resource interests have been translated into political outcomes in the form of American climate
change policy. Incorporating data about natural resource use and national decision-making, this paper concludes that comprehending
fully political decisions about global climate change in the United States requires us to recognize how land-use interests
in the growth machine are translated into political outcomes. The findings of this paper suggest that, in order to understand
social phenomena more fully, sociologists must recommit to studying the conjoint constitution of natural resources and social
processes.

Drawing on 1 year of ethnographic fieldwork in Los Angeles, this article examines how Latina nannies create workplace solidarity
in a public park. This article reveals how nannies use public spaces in the neighborhoods in which they work to establish
ties similar to co-worker relations in other settings. This paper demonstrates how nannies create a community at the park
by incorporating park staff into their activities, reinforcing group values such as sharing and reciprocity, and distinguishing
themselves from their employers. Adding to previous research which highlights the atomization and stigmatization that comes
with domestic employment, this article shows how nannies create co-worker relationships that are buffers against unfavorable
job conditions such as solitary work settings and unappreciative employers.

Participant observation in a nonprofit nursing home reveals that informal patterns of work routinization depart markedly from
official procedures designed to protect the health and safety of workers and residents. Six aspects of the informal organization
of work are found to correspond closely to patterns observed by Roy (1954): the mismatch between time and tasks, the development
of new (informal) skills, the institutionalization of rule-breaking, negative effects on quality, the collaboration of shop-level
supervision, and workers’ experience of managerial irrationality. However, whereas classic manufacturing studies emphasized
upper management's periodic attempts to force compliance to official rules and routines, here upper management engages only
in symbolic interventions, collaborating with workers and nursing home residents in the “mock routinization” of work. The
article concludes by showing how, in the context of contradictory external workplace regulation, all three parties to the
labor process of the contemporary nursing home experience mock routinization as compatible with their own interests.

Forging and Sustaining Labor–Community Coalitions: The Workfare Justice Movement in Three Cities 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article examines the factors shaping the formation and longevity of labor–community coalitions through comparative case
studies of campaigns for workfare justice in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and New York. Interviews with organizational staff and
leaders reveal that their decisions to form and sustain these coalitions were shaped by their collective identities, especially
their commitment to social movement unionism, and their context, particularly the sectoral distribution of workfare workers.
We also highlight the role of two factors previously overlooked by labor scholars: (1) ecological processes of niche-formation,
which determined if and how inter-organizational competition was overcome, and (2) authorities’ social-control strategies,
which shaped coalition endurance.

This article examines how the various claims to, and demands for, rights have enabled and shaped the various equity and justice
seeking social movements that have emerged in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, the key point being that claims to rights are fundamental
of the logic and coherence of social movements. The article is divided into three sections. The first sets the conceptual
and analytical frame by elaborating on the rights–social movements nexus. This is followed by a discussion of the historical
and conceptual location of the Niger Delta. The rest of the article interrogates the contexts of relative deprivation, rights
denial, and injustice within which social movements have emerged in the Niger Delta. A major objective is to account for why
the social movements have been largely ethnic and most recently generational and to analyze the dynamics and outcomes of the
rights struggles waged by the various social movements.

No profession in the United States has a broader perspective on human needs than social work. Bold but also functional, social
work distinctively places the pursuit of social justice on a par with the clinical treatment of individuals, pairs and families.
Yet for much of the twentieth Century, proponents of the “macro” and of the “micro” approaches to practice have challenged
each other’s commitment to social progressivism and humanist values. Interestingly, this on-going debate has hardly changed
the core “person-in-environment” psychoanalytic paradigm at all. It is time to set aside this hidebound dispute, I argue in
this article: social work is not two institutions folded into one but one profession that must be understood dialectically.
Drawing on the history of the early psychoanalyst’s intense social activism and their commitment to treating the poor and
working classes, I show how psychoanalysis shares in the transformation of civil society and helps restore individuals and
communities alike to self-regulation and productivity.

I use Swedish establishment-level panel data to test the hypothesis of Bertola and Rogerson (Eur Econ Rev 41:1147–1171 1997) of a positive relation between the degree of wage compression and job reallocation. Results indicate that the effect of
wage compression on job turnover is positive and significant in the manufacturing sector. The wage compression effect is stronger
on job destruction than on job creation, consistent with downward wage rigidity. Further results include a strong positive
relationship between the fraction of temporary employees and job turnover and a negative relationship between the amount of
working-time flexibility and job reallocation.

We study and compare equilibrium platforms in models of unidimensional electoral competition with two and four policy motivated
parties. We first analyze the plurality game, where the party getting the most votes is elected and implements its proposed
platform. Restrictions on the set of credible announcements are needed to get existence of equilibria. Comparing equilibria
with two and four parties, we obtain that moderate parties react to the introduction of extreme parties by proposing the same
or more extreme equilibrium platforms. We then study the proportional system, where the policy implemented is a weighted sum
of the proposals, with the voting shares as weights. Here, the existence of extreme parties leads moderate ones to choose
more centrist platforms. We finally test the robustness of our results with respect to, first, the enlargement of the strategy
space to entry decisions and, second, to asymmetric distributions of voters' blisspoints.

Using meta-analysis, we find a consistent positive correlation between emotion recognition accuracy (ERA) and goal-oriented
performance. However, this existing research relies primarily on subjective perceptions of performance. The current study
tested the impact of ERA on objective performance in a mixed-motive buyer-seller negotiation exercise. Greater recognition
of posed facial expressions predicted better objective outcomes for participants from Singapore playing the role of seller,
both in terms of creating value and claiming a greater share for themselves. The present study is distinct from past research
on the effects of individual differences on negotiation outcomes in that it uses a performance-based test rather than self-reported
measure. These results add to evidence for the predictive validity of emotion recognition measures on practical outcomes.
