In this paper, we extend the work of Gjestvang and Singh [A new randomized response model, J. R. Statist. Soc. Ser. B (Methodological) 68 (2006), pp. 523–530] to propose a new unrelated question randomized response model that can be used for any sampling scheme. The interesting thing is that the estimator based on one sample is free from the use of known proportion of an unrelated character, unlike Horvitz et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model, Social Statistics Section, Proceedings of the American Statistical Association, 1967, pp. 65–72], Greenberg et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model: Theoretical framework, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 64 (1969), pp. 520–539] and Mangat et al. [An improved unrelated question randomized response strategy, Calcutta Statist. Assoc. Bull. 42 (1992), pp. 167–168] models. The relative efficiency of the proposed model with respect to the existing competitors has been studied.  相似文献

The paper introduces an estimator of the entropy of a continuous random variable. The estimator is obtained by modifying the estimator proposed by Ebrahimi et al. [Two measures of sample entropy, Statist. Probab. Lett. 20 (1994), pp. 225–234]. The consistency of the estimator is proved and comparisons are made with Vasicek's estimator [A test for normality based on sample entropy, J. R. Stat. Soc. Ser. B 38 (1976), pp. 54–59], van Es estimator [Estimating functionals related to a density by class of statistics based on spacings, Scand. J. Statist. 19 (1992), pp. 61–72], Ebrahimi et al. estimator and Correa estimator [A new estimator of entropy, Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 24 (1995), pp. 2439–2449]. The results indicate that the proposed estimator has smaller mean-squared error than above estimators. A real example is presented and analysed.  相似文献

In this paper, we suggest a class of estimators for estimating the population mean ? of the study variable Y using information on X?, the population mean of the auxiliary variable X using ranked set sampling envisaged by McIntyre [A method of unbiased selective sampling using ranked sets, Aust. J. Agric. Res. 3 (1952), pp. 385–390] and developed by Takahasi and Wakimoto [On unbiased estimates of the population mean based on the sample stratified by means of ordering, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 20 (1968), pp. 1–31]. The estimator reported by Kadilar et al. [Ratio estimator for the population mean using ranked set sampling, Statist. Papers 50 (2009), pp. 301–309] is identified as a member of the proposed class of estimators. The bias and the mean-squared error (MSE) of the proposed class of estimators are obtained. An asymptotically optimum estimator in the class is identified with its MSE formulae. To judge the merits of the suggested class of estimators over others, an empirical study is carried out.  相似文献

This study proposes the estimators for the mean and its variance of the number of respondents who possessed a rare sensitive attribute based on stratified sampling schemes (stratified sampling and stratified double sampling). This study deals with the extension of the estimation reported in Land et al. [Estimation of a rare sensitive attribute using Poisson distribution, Statistics (2011), in press. DOI: 10.1080/02331888.2010.524300] using a Poisson distribution and an unrelated question randomized response model reported in Greenberg et al. [The unrelated question randomized response model: Theoretical framework, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 64 (1969), 520–539]. In the stratified sampling, the estimators are proposed when the parameter of the rare unrelated attribute is known and unknown. The variances of estimators using a proportional and optimum allocation are also suggested. The proposed estimators are evaluated using a relative efficiency comparing variances of the estimators reported in Land et al. depending on the parameters and the probability of selecting a question. We showed that our proposed methods have better efficiencies than Land et al.’s randomized response model in some conditions. When the sizes of stratified populations are not given, other estimators are suggested using a stratified double sampling. For the proportional allocation, the difference between two variances in the stratified sampling and the stratified double sampling is given with the known rare unrelated attribute.  相似文献

A computationally simple method for estimating finite-population quantiles in the presence of auxiliary information is proposed. An algorithm is also found for implementing related approaches for estimating quantiles, including that of Rao et al. (1990), obtained from inverting difference-type estimators of the distribution function. The proposed estimation procedure can be seen as a one-step iteration of the suggested algorithm and is asymptotically equivalent to the limiting estimator. In particular, the proposed method yields a simple and efficient way of approximating Rao et al.'s estimator. Simulation studies based on two real populations show that the approximation can be very satisfactory even for small to moderate samples.  相似文献

Variable selection in multiple linear regression models is considered. It is shown that for the special case of orthogonal predictor variables, an adaptive pre-test-type procedure proposed by Venter and Steel [Simultaneous selection and estimation for the some zeros family of normal models, J. Statist. Comput. Simul. 45 (1993), pp. 129–146] is almost equivalent to least angle regression, proposed by Efron et al. [Least angle regression, Ann. Stat. 32 (2004), pp. 407–499]. A new adaptive pre-test-type procedure is proposed, which extends the procedure of Venter and Steel to the general non-orthogonal case in a multiple linear regression analysis. This new procedure is based on a likelihood ratio test where the critical value is determined data-dependently. A practical illustration and results from a simulation study are presented.  相似文献

In this paper, we first propose a new estimator of entropy for continuous random variables. Our estimator is obtained by correcting the coefficients of Vasicek's [A test for normality based on sample entropy, J. R. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 38 (1976), pp. 54–59] entropy estimator. We prove the consistency of our estimator. Monte Carlo studies show that our estimator is better than the entropy estimators proposed by Vasicek, Ebrahimi et al. [Two measures of sample entropy, Stat. Probab. Lett. 20 (1994), pp. 225–234] and Correa [A new estimator of entropy, Commun. Stat. Theory Methods 24 (1995), pp. 2439–2449] in terms of root mean square error. We then derive the non-parametric distribution function corresponding to our proposed entropy estimator as a piece-wise uniform distribution. We also introduce goodness-of-fit tests for testing exponentiality and normality based on the said distribution and compare its performance with their leading competitors.  相似文献

We study variable sampling plans for exponential distributions based on type-I hybrid censored samples. For this problem, two sampling plans based on the non-failure sample proportion and the conditional maximum likelihood estimator are proposed by Chen et al. [J. Chen, W. Chou, H. Wu, and H. Zhou, Designing acceptance sampling schemes for life testing with mixed censoring, Naval Res. Logist. 51 (2004), pp. 597–612] and Lin et al. [C.-T. Lin, Y.-L. Huang, and N. Balakrishnan, Exact Bayesian variable sampling plans for the exponential distribution based on type-I and type-II censored samples, Commun. Statist. Simul. Comput. 37 (2008), pp. 1101–1116], respectively. From the theoretic decision point of view, the preceding two sampling plans are not optimal due to their decision functions not being the Bayes decision functions. In this article, we consider the decision theoretic approach, and the optimal Bayesian sampling plan based on sufficient statistics is derived under a general loss function. Furthermore, for the conjugate prior distribution, the closed-form formula of the Bayes decision rule can be obtained under either the linear or quadratic decision loss. The resulting Bayesian sampling plan has the minimum Bayes risk, and hence it is better than the sampling plans proposed by Chen et al. (2004) and Lin et al. (2008). Numerical comparisons are given and demonstrate that the performance of the proposed Bayesian sampling plan is superior to that of Chen et al. (2004) and Lin et al. (2008).  相似文献

The paper introduces and discusses different estimation methods for multi-index models where the indices are parametric and the link function is nonparametric. We provide a new algorithm that extends the ideas of Hristache and colleagues by an additional penalization within the search space. We concentrate on an intuitive presentation of the procedure. We provide a comparative simulation study of the proposed algorithm, the original algorithm from Hristache et al. [M. Hristache, A. Juditski, and V. Spokoiny, Structure adaptive approach for dimension reduction, Ann. Stat. 29(6) (2001), pp. 1537–1566.] and a modification of this algorithm. Finally the procedure is illustrated by an analysis of the Boston housing data. All computations are performed using the effective dimension reduction (EDR) package that we make available within the R statistical system.  相似文献

This paper presents a new Laplacian approximation to the posterior density of η = g(θ). It has a simpler analytical form than that described by Leonard et al. (1989). The approximation derived by Leonard et al. requires a conditional information matrix Rη to be positive definite for every fixed η. However, in many cases, not all Rη are positive definite. In such cases, the computations of their approximations fail, since the approximation cannot be normalized. However, the new approximation may be modified so that the corresponding conditional information matrix can be made positive definite for every fixed η. In addition, a Bayesian procedure for contingency-table model checking is provided. An example of cross-classification between the educational level of a wife and fertility-planning status of couples is used for explanation. Various Laplacian approximations are computed and compared in this example and in an example of public school expenditures in the context of Bayesian analysis of the multiparameter Fisher-Behrens problem.  相似文献

Singh et al. (Stat Trans 6(4):515–522, 2003) proposed a modified unrelated question procedure and they also demonstrated that the modified procedure is capable of producing a more efficient estimator of the population parameter π A , namely, the proportion of persons in a community bearing a sensitive character A when π A  < 0.50. The development of Singh et al. (Stat Trans 6(4):515–522, 2003) is based on simple random samples with replacement and on the assumption that π B , namely, the proportion of individuals bearing an unrelated innocuous character B is known. Due to these limitations, Singh et al.’s (Stat Trans 6(4):515–522, 2003) procedure cannot be used in practical surveys where usually the sample units are chosen with varying selection probabilities. In this article, following Singh et al. (Stat Trans 6(4):515–522, 2003) we propose an alternative RR procedure assuming that the population units are sampled with unequal selection probabilities and that the value of π B is unknown. A numerical example comparing the performance of the proposed RR procedure under alternative sampling designs is also reported.  相似文献

In this paper, we are mainly interested in estimating the reliability R=P(X>Y) in the Marshall–Olkin extended Lomax distribution, recently proposed by Ghitany et al. [Marshall–Olkin extended Lomax distribution and its application, Commun. Statist. Theory Methods 36 (2007), pp. 1855–1866]. The model arises as a proportional odds model where the covariate effect is replaced by an additional parameter. Maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are developed and an asymptotic confidence interval for R is obtained. Extensive simulation studies are carried out to investigate the performance of these intervals. Using real data we illustrate the procedure.  相似文献

Asymptotic inferences about a linear combination of K independent binomial proportions are very frequent in applied research. Nevertheless, until quite recently research had been focused almost exclusively on cases of K≤2 (particularly on cases of one proportion and the difference of two proportions). This article focuses on cases of K>2, which have recently begun to receive more attention due to their great practical interest. In order to make this inference, there are several procedures which have not been compared: the score method (S0) and the method proposed by Martín Andrés et al. (W3) for adjusted Wald (which is a generalization of the method proposed by Price and Bonett) on the one hand and, on the other hand, the method of Zou et al. (N0) based on the Wilson confidence interval (which is a generalization of the Newcombe method). The article describes a new procedure (P0) based on the classic Peskun method, modifies the previous methods giving them continuity correction (methods S0c, W3c, N0c and P0c, respectively) and, finally, a simulation is made to compare the eight aforementioned procedures (which are selected from a total of 32 possible methods). The conclusion reached is that the S0c method is the best, although for very small samples (n i ≤10, ? i) the W3 method is better. The P0 method would be the optimal method if one needs a method which is almost never too liberal, but this entails using a method which is too conservative and which provides excessively wide CIs. The W3 and P0 methods have the additional advantage of being very easy to apply. The spatially inhomogeneous smoothness of the non-parametric density or regression-function to be estimated by non-parametric methods is often modelled by Besov- and Triebel-type smoothness constraints. For such problems, Donoho and Johnstone [D.L. Donoho and I.M. Johnstone, Minimax estimation via wavelet shrinkage. Ann. Stat. 26 (1998), pp. 879–921.], Delyon and Juditsky [B. Delyon and A. Juditsky, On minimax wavelet estimators, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 3 (1996), pp. 215–228.] studied minimax rates of convergence for wavelet estimators with thresholding, while Lepski et al. [O.V. Lepski, E. Mammen, and V.G. Spokoiny, Optimal spatial adaptation to inhomogeneous smoothness: an approach based on kernel estimators with variable bandwidth selectors, Ann. Stat. 25 (1997), pp. 929–947.] proposed a variable bandwidth selection for kernel estimators that achieved optimal rates over Besov classes. However, a second challenge in many real applications of non-parametric curve estimation is that the function must be positive. Here, we show how to construct estimators under positivity constraints that satisfy these constraints and also achieve minimax rates over the appropriate smoothness class.  相似文献

In this article, we propose several goodness-of-fit methods for location–scale families of distributions under progressively Type-II censored data. The new tests are based on order statistics and sample spacings. We assess the performance of the proposed tests for the normal and Gumbel models against several alternatives by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It has been observed that the proposed tests are quite powerful in comparison with an existing goodness-of-fit test proposed for progressively Type-II censored data by Balakrishnan et al. [Goodness-of-fit tests based on spacings for progressively Type-II censored data from a general location–scale distribution, IEEE Trans. Reliab. 53 (2004), pp. 349–356]. Finally, we illustrate the proposed goodness-of-fit tests using two real data from reliability literature.  相似文献

A new procedure of shift parameter estimation in the two-sample location problem is investigated and compared with existing estimators. The proposed procedure smooths the empirical distribution functions of each random sample and replaces empirical distribution functions in the two-sample Kolmogorov–Smirnov method. The smoothed Kolmogorov–Smirnov is minimized with respect to an arbitrary shift variable in order to find an estimate of the shift parameter. The proposed procedure can be considered the smoothed version of a very little known method of shift parameter estimation from Rao-Schuster-Littell (RSL) [Rao et al., Estimation of shift and center of symmetry based on Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistics, Ann. Stat. 3(4) (1975), pp. 862–873]. Their estimator will be discussed and compared with the proposed estimator in this paper. An example and simulation studies have been performed to compare the proposed procedure with existing shift parameter estimators such as Hodges–Lehmann (H–L) and least squares in addition to RSL's estimator. The results show that the proposed estimator has lower mean-squared error as well as higher relative efficiency against RSL's estimator under normal or contaminated normal model assumptions. Moreover, the proposed estimator performs competitively against H–L and least-squares shift estimators. Smoother function and bandwidth selections are also discussed and several alternatives are proposed in the study.  相似文献

In this paper we apply the sequential bootstrap method proposed by Collet et al. [Bootstrap Central Limit theorem for chains of infinite order via Markov approximations, Markov Processes and Related Fields 11(3) (2005), pp. 443–464] to estimate the variance of the empirical mean of a special class of chains of infinite order called sparse chains. For this process, we show that we are able to compute numerically the true value of the standard error with any fixed error.

Our main goal is to present a comparison, for sparse chains, among sequential bootstrap, the block bootstrap method proposed by Künsch [The jackknife and the Bootstrap for general stationary observations, Ann. Statist. 17 (1989), pp. 1217–1241] and improved by Liu and Singh [Moving blocks jackknife and Bootstrap capture week dependence, in Exploring the limits of the Bootstrap, R. Lepage and L. Billard, eds., Wiley, New York, 1992, pp. 225–248] and the bootstrap method proposed by Bühlmann [Blockwise bootstrapped empirical process for stationary sequences, Ann. For the two-sided comparisons of several treatments with a control, a common statistical problem is to decide which treatments are better than the control and which are worse than the control. This paper studies a multiple three-decision procedure for this purpose, proposed by Bohrer (1979) and Bohrer et al. (1981), and provides tables of critical points to facilitate the application of the procedure. The paper defines a power function of the procedure, and tabulates sample sizes necessary to guarantee a given power level. It addresses the problem of optimal sampling allocation in order to maximize the power for a given total sample size, and considers generalization to the situation where the treatments might have unequal numbers of observations.  相似文献

This paper proposes an approximation to the distribution of a goodness-of-fit statistic proposed recently by Balakrishnan et al. [Balakrishnan, N., Ng, H.K.T. and Kannan, N., 2002, A test of exponentiality based on spacings for progressively Type-II censored data. In: C. Huber-Carol et al. (Eds.), Goodness-of-Fit Tests and Model Validity (Boston: Birkhäuser), pp. 89–111.] for testing exponentiality based on progressively Type-II right censored data. The moments of this statistic can be easily calculated, but its distribution is not known in an explicit form. We first obtain the exact moments of the statistic using Basu's theorem and then the density approximants based on these exact moments of the statistic, expressed in terms of Laguerre polynomials, are proposed. A comparative study of the proposed approximation to the exact critical values, computed by Balakrishnan and Lin [Balakrishnan, N. and Lin, C.T., 2003, On the distribution of a test for exponentiality based on progressively Type-II right censored spacings. Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 73 (4), 277–283.], is carried out. This reveals that the proposed approximation is very accurate.  相似文献
