In this paper, we derive several new recurrence relations and indentities satisfied by the single and the product moments of order statistics from a sample of size n in the presence of an outlier. These recurrence relations involve the first two single moments and the product moments in samples of sized n?1 and less. By making use of these recurrence relations we show that it is sufficient to evaluate at most two single rerents and (n?2)/2 product moment when n is even and two single moments and (n?2)/2 product moments when n is odd, in order to evaluate the first and second single moments and product moments of all order statistics in a sample of size n comprising an outlier, given these moments for the all sample of size less than n. These generalize the results of Govindarajulu (1963), Joshi (1971), and Joshi and Balakrishnan (1982) to the case when the sample includes a single outlier. We also establish some simple identitites involving linear combination of convariances of order statistics. These results can be effectively used to reduce the amount of numerical computation considerably and also to check the accuracy of the computations while evaluating means, variances and covariances of order statistics from an outlier model.  相似文献

Balakrishnan (1987a) has recently shown that the moments of order statistics in samples drawn from a continuous population with pdf f(x) symmetric about zero comprising a single outlier with pdf g(x) also symmetric about zero can be expressed in terms of the moments of order statistics in samples drawn from the population obtained by folding the pdf f(x) at zero and the moments of order statistics in samples drawn from the population obtained by folding the pdf f(x) at zero comprising a single outlier with pdf obtained by folding g(x) at zero. The cumulative round off error involved in the numerical evaluation of the moments of order statistics from the symmetric outlier model, using a table of the moments of order statistics from the folded population and the moments of order statistics from the folded outlier model, has also been studied by Balakrishnan (1987a) and shown to be not serious. Making use of these results we study here the robustness of some estimators of th location and scale parameters of a double exponential distribution.  相似文献

Some new identities among the m oments of order statistics are derived. These are more general in nature and are applicable when moments of Some extreme order statistics do not exist.  相似文献

In an earlier paper, Malik et al. (1987) have reviewed several recurrence relations and identities available for the single and product moments of order statistics from an arbitrary continuous distribution. In this paper, we review several such relations and identities established for both single and product moments of order statistics from some specific continuous distributions. We also mention some important applications or. these results.  相似文献

We derive a simple relation satisfied by the covariances of order statistics in the i.i.d. case and then generalize it to the case when the variables are independent and non-identically distributed. This relation could be employed successfully either to check the calculations or to reduce the amount of direct computations involved in evaluating the covariances of order statistics from an outlier model.  相似文献

In this article, by using the dropping argument, a general recurrence relation satisfied by the joint cumulative distribution functions of order statistics from any arbitrary bivariate distribution function is established. This recurrence relation is the first bivariate version of the basic triangle rule for order statistics arisen from univariate distribution function. Finally, this relation is extended to the trivariate case. These lead to similar identities for product moments (of any order) of order statistics.  相似文献

A review of several statistical methods that are currently in use for outlier identification is presented, and their performances are compared theoretically for typical statistical distributions of experimental data, considering values derived from the distribution of extreme order statistics as reference terms. A simple modification of a popular, broadly used method based upon box-plot is introduced, in order to overcome a major limitation concerning sample size. Examples are presented concerning exploitation of methods considered on two data sets: a historical one concerning evaluation of an astronomical constant performed by a number of leading observatories and a substantial database pertaining to an ongoing investigation on absolute measurement of gravity acceleration, exhibiting peculiar aspects concerning outliers. Some problems related to outlier treatment are examined, and the requirement of both statistical analysis and expert opinion for proper outlier management is underlined.  相似文献

This paper presents operator methods, based on difference and differential operators, for establishing identities satisfied by distributions of order statistics. In addition to deducing many known identities, these operator methods may also be used to derive several new identities for distributions of order statistics.  相似文献

Joshi (1973) and Balakrishnan and Malik (1985) have derived some some identities for the moments of order statistics from independent and identically distributed random variables. In this paper, we make use of a basic result due to David and Joshi (1968) and show that these identities for the moments also hold when the order statistics arise from exchangeable variables.  相似文献

Linear identities for the distribution functions of order statistics from an iid sample are defined. It is shown that such identities are true for all distributions or to some discrete distributions taking a finite number of values.  相似文献

Several recurrence relations and identities available for single and product moments of order1 statistics in a sample size n from an arbitrary continuous distribution are extended for the discrete case,, Making use of these recurrence relations it is shown that it is sufficient to evaluate just two single moments and (n-l)/2 product moments when n is odd and two single moments and {n-2)/2 product moments when n is even, in order to evaluate the first, second and product moments of order statistics in a sample of size n drawn from an arbitrary discrete distribution, given these moments in samples of sizes n-1 and less.. A series representation for the product moments of order statistics is derived.. Besides enabling us to obtain an exact and explicit expression for the product moments of order statistics from the geometric distribution, it. makes the computation of the product moments of order statistics from other discrete distributions easy too.  相似文献

In this paper, we review several recurrence relations and identities established for the single and product moments of order statistics from an arbitrary continuous distribution. We point out the interrelationships between many of these recurrence relations. We discuss the results giving the bounds for the number of single and double integrals needed to be evaluated in order to compute the first, second and product moments of order statistics in a sample of size n from an arbitrary continuous distribution, given these moments in samples of sizes n-1 and less. Improvements of these bounds for the case of symmetric continuous distributions are also discussed  相似文献

We investigate the usefulness of sample autocorrelations and partial autocorrelations as model specification tools when the observed time series is contaminated by an outlier. The results indicate that the specification power of these statistics could be significantly jeopardized by an additive outlier. On the other hand, an innovational outlier seems to cause no harm to them.  相似文献

This paper presents a routine that calculates four outlier detection statistics. The routine determines a series of points that are identified as possible outliers, and calculates the values that can be used to test them. These values can be used in an iterative procedure to detect multiple outliers.  相似文献

A relation between four joint densities of progressively type-II censored order statistics is shown, which is well known in the particular case of ordinary order statistics. The result leads to identities for product moments and for moments of contrasts.  相似文献

The problem of discordancy testing for an upper and lower outlier pair in a sample from a gamma distribution with known shape is considered. Three statistics are investigated: the well-known extremal quotient and two likelihood-based procedures. Approximations t o the null distributions of the statistics are obtained where appropriate. The non-null properties are investigated by sensitivity contours and simulation.  相似文献

Heterogeneity in lifetime data may be modelled by multiplying an individual's hazard by an unobserved frailty. We test for the presence of frailty of this kind in univariate and bivariate data with Weibull distributed lifetimes, using statistics based on the ordered Cox–Snell residuals from the null model of no frailty. The form of the statistics is suggested by outlier testing in the gamma distribution. We find through simulation that the sum of the k largest or k smallest order statistics, for suitably chosen k, provides a powerful test when the frailty distribution is assumed to be gamma or positive stable, respectively. We provide recommended values of k for sample sizes up to 100 and simple formulae for estimated critical values for tests at the 5% level.  相似文献

In this paper, we establish new representations, identities and recurrence relations of order statistics (o.s.) arising from general independent nonidentically distributed random variables (r.v.s). These recurrence relations will enable one to compute all moments of all o.s. in a simple manner. Applications for some known distributions are given.  相似文献

Modern systems of official statistics require the estimation and publication of business statistics for disaggregated domains, for example, industry domains and geographical regions. Outlier robust methods have proven to be useful for small‐area estimation. Recently proposed outlier robust model‐based small‐area methods assume, however, uncorrelated random effects. Spatial dependencies, resulting from similar industry domains or geographic regions, often occur. In this paper, we propose an outlier robust small‐area methodology that allows for the presence of spatial correlation in the data. In particular, we present a robust predictive methodology that incorporates the potential spatial impact from other areas (domains) on the small area (domain) of interest. We further propose two parametric bootstrap methods for estimating the mean‐squared error. Simulations indicate that the proposed methodology may lead to efficiency gains. The paper concludes with an illustrative application by using business data for estimating average labour costs in Italian provinces.  相似文献
