This paper compares minimum distance estimation with best linear unbiased estimation to determine which technique provides the most accurate estimates for location and scale parameters as applied to the three parameter Pareto distribution. Two minimum distance estimators are developed for each of the three distance measures used (Kolmogorov, Cramer‐von Mises, and Anderson‐Darling) resulting in six new estimators. For a given sample size 6 or 18 and shape parameter 1(1)4, the location and scale parameters are estimated. A Monte Carlo technique is used to generate the sample sets. The best linear unbiased estimator and the six minimum distance estimators provide parameter estimates based on each sample set. These estimates are compared using mean square error as the evaluation tool. Results show that the best linear unbaised estimator provided more accurate estimates of location and scale than did the minimum estimators tested.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, we study the problem of estimating the stress-strength reliability, where the stress and strength variables follow independent exponential distributions with a common location parameter but different scale parameters. All parameters are assumed to be unknown. We derive the MLE, the UMVUE of the reliability parameter. We also derive the Bayes estimators considering conjugate prior distributions for the scale parameters and a dependent prior for the common location parameter. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out to compare among the proposed estimators with respect to different loss functions.  相似文献

In this paper, the linear empirical Bayes estimation method, which is based on approximation of the Bayes estimator by a linear function, is generalized to an extended linear empirical Bayes estimation technique which represents the Bayes estimator by a series of algebraic polynomials. The extended linear empirical Bayes estimators are elaborated in the case of a location or a scale parameter. The theory is illustrated by examples of its application to the normal distribution with a location parameter and the gamma distribution with a scale parameter. The linear and the extended linear empirical Bayes estimators are constructed in these two cases and, then, studied numerically via Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations show that the extended linear empirical Bayes estimators have better convergence rates than the traditional linear empirical Bayes estimators.  相似文献

In this work improved point and interval estimation of the smallest scale parameter of independent gamma distributions with known shape parameters are studied in an integrated fashion. The approach followed is based on formulating the model in such a way that enables us to treat the estimation of the smallest scale parameter as a problem of estimating an unrestricted scale parameter in the presence of a nuisance parameter. The class of improved point and interval estimators is enriched. Within this class, a subclass of generalized Bayes estimators of a simple form is identified.  相似文献

We derive analytic expressions for the biases of the maximum likelihood estimators of the scale parameter in the half-logistic distribution with known location, and of the location parameter when the latter is unknown. Using these expressions to bias-correct the estimators is highly effective, without adverse consequences for estimation mean squared error. The overall performance of the first of these bias-corrected estimators is slightly better than that of a bootstrap bias-corrected estimator. The bias-corrected estimator of the location parameter significantly out-performs its bootstrapped-based counterpart. Taking computational costs into account, the analytic bias corrections clearly dominate the use of the bootstrap.  相似文献

Some simple point estimators are proposed for the three-parameter Weibull distribution. Both complete and type II censored sampling are considered. The biases and variances of these estimators are studied by Monte Carlo simulation.

Percentage points for the estimator of the shape parameter are also obtained by Monte Carlo simulation, which enables interval estimation and tests of hypotheses to be carried out for the shape parameter.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with estimation of location and scale parameters of an exponential distribution when the location parameter is bounded above by a known constant. We propose estimators which are better than the standard estimators in the unrestricted case with respect to the suitable choice of LINEX loss. The admissibility of the modified Pitman estimators with respect to the LINEX loss is proved. Finally the theory developed is applied to the problem of estimating the location and scale parameters of two exponential distributions when the location parameters are ordered.  相似文献

Many lifetime distribution models have successfully served as population models for risk analysis and reliability mechanisms. The Kumaraswamy distribution is one of these distributions which is particularly useful to many natural phenomena whose outcomes have lower and upper bounds or bounded outcomes in the biomedical and epidemiological research. This article studies point estimation and interval estimation for the Kumaraswamy distribution. The inverse estimators (IEs) for the parameters of the Kumaraswamy distribution are derived. Numerical comparisons with maximum likelihood estimation and biased-corrected methods clearly indicate the proposed IEs are promising. Confidence intervals for the parameters and reliability characteristics of interest are constructed using pivotal or generalized pivotal quantities. Then, the results are extended to the stress–strength model involving two Kumaraswamy populations with different parameter values. Construction of confidence intervals for the stress–strength reliability is derived. Extensive simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of confidence intervals constructed using generalized pivotal quantities.  相似文献

Improved point and interval estimation of the smallest scale parameter of n independent populations following two-parameter exponential distributions are studied. The model is formulated in such a way that allows for treating the estimation of the smallest scale parameter as a problem of estimating an unrestricted scale parameter in the presence of a nuisance parameter. The classes of improved point and interval estimators are enriched with Stein-type, Brewster and Zidek-type, Maruyama-type and Strawderman-type improved estimators under both quadratic and entropy losses, whereas using as a criterion the coverage probability, with Stein-type, Brewster and Zidek-type, and Maruyama-type improved intervals. The sampling framework considered incorporates important life-testing schemes such as i.i.d. sampling, type-II censoring, progressive type-II censoring, adaptive progressive type-II censoring, and record values.  相似文献

This paper considers the estimation of the stress–strength reliability of a multi-state component or of a multi-state system where its states depend on the ratio of the strength and stress variables through a kernel function. The article presents a Bayesian approach assuming the stress and strength as exponentially distributed with a common location parameter but different scale parameters. We show that the limits of the Bayes estimators of both location and scale parameters under suitable priors are the maximum likelihood estimators as given by Ghosh and Razmpour [15 M. Ghosh and A. Razmpour, Estimation of the common location parameter of several exponentials, Sankhyā, Ser. A 46 (1984), pp. 383394. [Google Scholar]]. We use the Bayes estimators to determine the multi-state stress–strength reliability of a system having states between 0 and 1. We derive the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators of the reliability function. Interval estimation using the bootstrap method is also considered. Under the squared error loss function and linex loss function, risk comparison of the reliability estimators is carried out using extensive simulations.  相似文献

In this article, several independent populations following exponential distribution with common location parameter and unknown and unequal scale parameters are considered. From these populations, several independent samples of generalized order statistics (gos) are drawn. Under the setup of gos, the problem of estimation of common location parameter is discussed and various estimators of common location parameter are derived. The authors obtained maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), modified MLE and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of common location parameter. Furthermore, under scaled-squared error loss function, a general inadmissibility result of invariant estimator is proposed. The derived results are further reduced for upper record values which is a special case of gos. Finally, simulation study and real life example are reported to show the performances of various competing estimators in terms of percentage risk improvement.  相似文献

Tiao and Lund [The use of OLUMV estimators in inference robustness studies of the location parameter of a class of symmetric distributions. J Amer Statist Assoc. 1970;65(329):370–386] tabulated the coefficients of the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUEs) of location and scale for a particular family of symmetric distributions. This family was a reparameterization of the extended exponential power distribution (EEPD) with the shape parameter restricted to be greater than or equal to one. In this work, we consider the BLU estimation of the location and scale parameters of the EEPD when the shape parameter is one-third and one-half. We obtain closed-form expressions for the single and product moments of the order statistics when the shape parameter is in general in the form of a reciprocal of an integer. These expressions are then used to determine the BLUEs and the corresponding variances for complete samples of size 20 and less. We consider some other linear estimators of the location and scale parameters and then compare them with the BLUEs. Finally, we present a numerical example to illustrate the developed results.  相似文献

The problem of quantile selection for the asymptotically best linear unbiased estimators of location and scale parameters is considered. The asymptotic properties of several quantile selection methods for simultaneous parameter estimation are derived and simple approximate solutions are provided. A robust scheme for quantile selection is also developed.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of a parameter of interest in the presence of a nuisance parameter, which is either location or scale, is considered. Three estimators are taken into account: usual maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, maximum integrated likelihood estimator and the bias-corrected ML estimator. General results on comparison of these estimators w.r.t. the second-order risk based on the mean-squared error are obtained. Possible improvements of basic estimators via the notion of admissibility and methodology given in Ghosh and Sinha [A necessary and sufficient condition for second order admissibility with applications to Berkson's bioassay problem. Ann Stat. 1981;9(6):1334–1338] are considered. In the recent paper by Tanaka et al. [On improved estimation of a gamma shape parameter. Statistics. 2014; doi:10.1080/02331888.2014.915842], this problem was considered for estimating the shape parameter of gamma distribution. Here, we perform more accurate comparison of estimators for this case as well as for some other cases.  相似文献

Let X 1, X 2, ..., X n be a random sample from a normal population with mean μ and variance σ 2. In many real life situations, specially in lifetime or reliability estimation, the parameter μ is known a priori to lie in an interval [a, ∞). This makes the usual maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) ̄ an inadmissible estimator of μ with respect to the squared error loss. This is due to the fact that it may take values outside the parameter space. Katz (1961) and Gupta and Rohatgi (1980) proposed estimators which lie completely in the given interval. In this paper we derive some new estimators for μ and present a comparative study of the risk performance of these estimators. Both the known and unknown variance cases have been explored. The new estimators are shown to have superior risk performance over the existing ones over large portions of the parameter space.  相似文献

This paper explains the approach to parameter estimation based on the idea of simultaneous models. Instead of using a single shape—as for example the normal distribution—a simultaneous model uses a finite number of distinct shapes F, G, etc. Such simultaneous systems are tools in gauging the finite sample behavior of estimators. And they can be applied in the design of an estimator with prescribed desirable properties. The problem considered in this paper is interval estimation for a scale parameter. We discuss among other things the computation of optimal estimators in simultaneous models and study more closely the case of protecting against heavy-tailed error distributions.  相似文献

This paper considers estimation of an unknown distribution parameter in situations where we believe that the parameter belongs to a finite interval. We propose for such situations an interval shrinkage approach which combines in a coherent way an unbiased conventional estimator and non-sample information about the range of plausible parameter values. The approach is based on an infeasible interval shrinkage estimator which uniformly dominates the underlying conventional estimator with respect to the mean square error criterion. This infeasible estimator allows us to obtain useful feasible counterparts. The properties of these feasible interval shrinkage estimators are illustrated both in a simulation study and in empirical examples.  相似文献

The problem of estimation of the parameters of two-parameter inverse Weibull distributions has been considered. We establish existence and uniqueness of the maximum likelihood estimators of the scale and shape parameters. We derive Bayes estimators of the parameters under the entropy loss function. Hierarchical Bayes estimator, equivariant estimator and a class of minimax estimators are derived when shape parameter is known. Ordered Bayes estimators using information about second population are also derived. We investigate the reliability of multi-component stress-strength model using classical and Bayesian approaches. Risk comparison of the classical and Bayes estimators is done using Monte Carlo simulations. Applications of the proposed estimators are shown using real data sets.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to study the estimation of the reliability R=P(Y<X) when X and Y are independent random variables that follow Kumaraswamy's distribution with different parameters. If we assume that the first shape parameter is common and known, the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), the exact confidence interval and the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of R are obtained. Moreover, when the first parameter is common but unknown, MLEs, Bayes estimators, asymptotic distributions and confidence intervals for R are derived. Furthermore, Bayes and empirical Bayes estimators for R are obtained when the first parameter is common and known. Finally, when all four parameters are different and unknown, the MLE of R is obtained. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the different proposed methods and conclusions on the findings are given.  相似文献

The problem of location and scale parameter estimation from randomly censored data is analyzed through use of a regression model for the Kaplan-Meier quantlle process. Continuous time regression techniques are employed to construct estimators that are both asymptotically normal and efficient. Estimators with a particularly simple form are obtained for the Koziol-Green model for random censorship. In the event of no censoring the regression model, and resulting estimators, reduce to those proposed by Parzen (1979 a, b).  相似文献
