Based on a random sample from the Laplace population with unknown shape and scale parameters, one- and two-sided confidence bands on the entire cumulative distribution function and simultaneous confidence intervals for the interval probabilities under the distribution are constructed using Kolmogorov–Smirnov type statistics. Small sample and asymptotic percentiles of the relevant statistics are provided.  相似文献

In this paper, we revisit the construction of confidence intervals for extreme quantiles of Pareto-type distributions. A novel asymptotic pivotal quantity is proposed for these quantile estimators, which leads to new asymptotic confidence intervals that exhibit more accurate coverage probability. This pivotal quantity also allows for the construction of a saddle-point approximation, from which a second set of new confidence intervals follows. The small-sample properties and utility of these confidence intervals are studied using simulations and a case study from insurance.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose new asymptotic confidence intervals for extreme quantiles, that is, for quantiles located outside the range of the available data. We restrict ourselves to the situation where the underlying distribution is heavy-tailed. While asymptotic confidence intervals are mostly constructed around a pivotal quantity, we consider here an alternative approach based on the distribution of order statistics sampled from a uniform distribution. The convergence of the coverage probability to the nominal one is established under a classical second-order condition. The finite sample behavior is also examined and our methodology is applied to a real dataset.  相似文献

This article presents methods for the construction of two-sided and one-sided simultaneous hyperbolic bands for the logistic and probit regression models when the predictor variable is restricted to a given interval. The bands are constructed based on the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimators. Past articles have considered building two-sided asymptotic confidence bands for the logistic model, such as Piegorsch and Casella (1988 Piegorsch, W.W., Casella, G. (1988). Confidence bands for logistic regression with restricted predictor variables. Biometrics 44:739750.[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). However, the confidence bands given by Piegorsch and Casella are conservative under a single interval restriction, and it is shown in this article that their bands can be sharpened using the methods proposed here. Furthermore, no method has yet appeared in the literature for constructing one-sided confidence bands for the logistic model, and no work has been done for building confidence bands for the probit model, over a limited range of the predictor variable. This article provides methods for computing critical points in these areas.  相似文献

Median survival times and their associated confidence intervals are often used to summarize the survival outcome of a group of patients in clinical trials with failure-time endpoints. Although there is an extensive literature on this topic for the case in which the patients come from a homogeneous population, few papers have dealt with the case in which covariates are present as in the proportional hazards model. In this paper we propose a new approach to this problem and demonstrate its advantages over existing methods, not only for the proportional hazards model but also for the widely studied cases where covariates are absent and where there is no censoring. As an illustration, we apply it to the Stanford Heart Transplant data. Asymptotic theory and simulation studies show that the proposed method indeed yields confidence intervals and bands with accurate coverage errors.  相似文献

This paper considers the maximum and minimum of a pair of log-normal variables with equal mean. It shows that either order statistic has a smaller coefficient of variation than the two original log-normal variables provided the latter are of equal variance. When the variances are unequal, as the variance ratio increases, the minimum (maximum), has a smaller coefficient of variation if the correlation coefficient of the log-normal variables is small (small) and the variances are large (small).  相似文献

A Cornish-Fisher expansion is used to approximate the per-centiles of a variable of the bivariate normal distribution when the other variable is truncated. The expression is in terms of the bivariate cumulants of a singly truncated bivariate normal distribution. The percentiles are useful in the problem of personnel selection where we use a screening variable to screen applicants for employment and a correlated performance variable to screen employees for rehiring. This paper provides a bivariate cumulants table for determining the cutoff score of the performance variable. We consider graphs, confidence procedures and tests that can be used to compare transition probabilities in a Markov chain model with intensities specified by a Cox proportional hazard model. Under assumptions of this model, the regression coefficients provide information about the relative risks of covariates in one–step transitions, however, they cannot in general be used to to assess whether or not the covariates have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the endpoint events. To alleviate this problem, we consider graphical tests based on confidence procedures for a generalized Q–Q plot and for the difference between transition probabilities. Many goodness of fit tests for bivariate normality are not rigorous procedures because the distributions of the proposed statistics are unknown or too difficult to manipulate. Two familiar examples are the ring test and the line test. In both tests the statistic utilized generally is approximated by a chi-square distribution rather than compared to its known beta distribution. In a ground-breaking paper published in 1990 by the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, J.R.M. Hosking defined the L-moment of a random variable as an expectation of certain linear combinations of order statistics. L-moments are an alternative to conventional moments and recently they have been used often in inferential statistics. L-moments have several advantages over the conventional moments, including robustness to the the presence of outliers, which may lead to more accurate estimates in some cases as the characteristics of distributions. In this contribution, asymptotic theory and L-moments are used to derive confidence intervals of the population parameters and quantiles of the three-parametric generalized Pareto and extreme-value distributions. Computer simulations are performed to determine the performance of confidence intervals for the population quantiles based on L-moments and to compare them to those obtained by traditional estimation techniques. The results obtained show that they perform well in comparison to the moments and maximum likelihood methods when the interest is in higher quantiles, or even best. L-moments are especially recommended when the tail of the distribution is rather heavier and the sample size is small. The derived intervals are applied to real economic data, and specifically to market-opening asset prices.  相似文献
