The 25-page Bibliography in Applied Regression Analysis, 2nd edition, by N.R. Draper and H. Smith, published by Wiley in 1981, is extended by a list of selected references available during 1988-89, and a few older references inadvertently omitted from previous lists. It is hoped that this will be useful to regression practictioners. Items were chosen on the basis of their perceived relevance to practical applications (sometimes rather widely interpreted). The classification system used is that of the book.

The references were selected mostly from the issues of these journals: Annals of Statistics; Applied Statistics: Biometrika; Canadian Journal of Statistics; Bulletin of the International Statistical Institute; Journal of the American Statistical Association; Journal of Quality Technology; Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series A and B; and Technometrics.

The author would appreciate being notified of errors, however slight, so that these do not persist in future compilations.  相似文献

An important practical issue of applying heavy tailed distributions is how to choose the sample fraction or threshold, since only a fraction of upper order statistics can be employed in the inference. Recently, Guillou & Hall ( 2001 ; Journal of Royal Statistical Society B, 63, 293–305) proposed a simple way to choose the threshold in estimating a tail index. In this article, the author first gives an intuitive explanation of the approach in Guillou & Hall ( 2001 ; it Journal of Royal Statistical Society B, 63, 293–305) and then proposes an alternative method, which can be extended to other settings like extreme value index estimation and tail dependence function estimation. Further the author proposes to combine this method for selecting a threshold with a bias reduction estimator to improve the performance of the tail index estimation, interval estimation of a tail index, and high quantile estimation. Simulation studies on both point estimation and interval estimation for a tail index show that both selection procedures are comparable and bias reduction estimation with the threshold selected by either method is preferred. Coarse data is a general type of incomplete data that includes grouped data, censored data, and missing data. The likelihood‐based estimation approach with coarse data is challenging because the likelihood function is in integral form. The Monte Carlo EM algorithm of Wei & Tanner [Wei & Tanner (1990). Journal of the American Statistical Association, 85, 699–704] is adapted to compute the maximum likelihood estimator in the presence of coarse data. Stochastic coarse data is also covered and the computation can be implemented using the parametric fractional imputation method proposed by Kim [Kim (2011). Biometrika, 98, 119–132]. Results from a limited simulation study are presented. The proposed method is also applied to the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Testing for stochastic order among K populations is a common and important problem in statistical practice. It arises in the analysis of both planned experiments and observational studies. The authors develop a new nonparametric test for order among K populations that can accommodate any stochastic ordering. The test is based on a maximally selected chi‐bar‐square statistic. The authors find its limiting distribution and use simulations to derive critical values. Three important examples are used to illustrate the applicability of the general method. The authors find that the new tests outperform the existing methods in many practical cases. The Canadian Journal of Statistics 38: 97–115; 2010 © 2009 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

The non-central gamma distribution can be regarded as a general form of non-central χ2 distributions whose computations were thoroughly investigated (Ruben, H., 1974, Non-central chi-square and gamma revisited. Communications in Statistics, 3(7), 607–633; Knüsel, L., 1986, Computation of the chi-square and Poisson distribution. SIAM Journal on Scientific and Statistical Computing, 7, 1022–1036; Voit, E.O. and Rust, P.F., 1987, Noncentral chi-square distributions computed by S-system differential equations. Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section, ASA, pp. 118–121; Rust, P.F. and Voit, E.O., 1990, Statistical densities, cumulatives, quantiles, and power obtained by S-systems differential equations. Journal of the American Statistical Association, 85, 572–578; Chattamvelli, R., 1994, Another derivation of two algorithms for the noncentral χ2 and F distributions. Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 49, 207–214; Johnson, N.J., Kotz, S. and Balakrishnan, N., 1995, Continuous Univariate Distributions, Vol. 2 (2nd edn) (New York: Wiley). Both distributional function forms are usually in terms of weighted infinite series of the central one. The ad hoc approximations to cumulative probabilities of non-central gamma were extended or discussed by Chattamvelli, Knüsel and Bablok (Knüsel, L. and Bablok, B., 1996, Computation of the noncentral gamma distribution. SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 17, 1224–1231), and Ruben (Ruben, H., 1974, Non-central chi-square and gamma revisited. Communications in Statistics, 3(7), 607–633). However, they did not implement and demonstrate proposed numerical procedures. Approximations to non-central densities and quantiles are not available. In addition, its S-system formulation has not been derived. Here, approximations to cumulative probabilities, density, and quantiles based on the method of Knüsel and Bablok are derived and implemented in R codes. Furthermore, two alternate S-system forms are recast on the basis of techniques of Savageau and Voit (Savageau, M.A. and Voit, E.O., 1987, Recasting nonlinear differential equations as S-systems: A canonical nonlinear form. Mathematical Biosciences, 87, 83–115) as well as Chen (Chen, Z.-Y., 2003, Computing the distribution of the squared sample multiple correlation coefficient with S-Systems. Communications in Statistics—Simulation and Computation, 32(3), 873–898.) and Chen and Chou (Chen, Z.-Y. and Chou, Y.-C., 2000, Computing the noncentral beta distribution with S-system. Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, 33, 343–360.). Statistical densities, cumulative probabilities, quantiles can be evaluated by only one numerical solver power low analysis and simulation (PLAS). With the newly derived S-systems of non-central gamma, the specialized non-central χ2 distributions are demonstrated under five cases in the same three situations studied by Rust and Voit. Both numerical values in pairs are almost equal. Based on these, nine cases in three similar situations are designed for demonstration and evaluation. In addition, exact values in finite significant digits are provided for comparison. Demonstrations are conducted by R package and PLAS solver in the same PC system. By doing these, very accurate and consistent numerical results are obtained by three methods in two groups. On the other hand, these three methods are performed competitively with respect to speed of computation. Numerical advantages of S-systems over the ad hoc approximation and related properties are also discussed.  相似文献

Ghoudi, Khoudraji & Rivest [The Canadian Journal of Statistics 1998;26:187–197] showed how to test whether the dependence structure of a pair of continuous random variables is characterized by an extreme‐value copula. The test is based on a U‐statistic whose finite‐ and large‐sample variance are determined by the present authors. They propose estimates of this variance which they compare to the jackknife estimate of Ghoudi, Khoudraji & Rivest ( 1998 ) through simulations. They study the finite‐sample and asymptotic power of the test under various alternatives. They illustrate their approach using financial and geological data. This paper describes the foundation of the Applied Probability Trust and the launching of the Journal of Applied Probability in 1964. The Trust office was set up in Sheffield in 1965; the Trust has since published Mathematical Spectrum (1968) and Advances in Applied Probability (1969). Various other publishing ventures are described, and some statistics given for the Applied Probability journals. In conclusion, tentative plans for the future of the Trust are outlined.  相似文献

A test for exchangeability of copulas for arbitrary dimensions is proposed, generalising and extending a result by Genest et al. [(2012), ‘Tests of Symmetry for Bivariate Copulas’, Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 64, 811–834]. Three test statistics together with some modifications are presented and their asymptotical behaviour is analysed. Empirical p-values are computed by using a bootstrap-procedure proposed by Rémillard and Scaillet [(2009), ‘Testing for Equality between Two Copulas’, Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 100, 377–386] and suggested by Bücher and Dette [(2010), ‘A Note on Bootstrap Approximations for the Empirical Copula Process’, Statistics & Probability Letters, 80, 1925–1932], based on a multiplier central limit theorem by van der Vaart and Wellner [(1996), Weak Convergence and Empirical Processes, Springer Series in Statistics, New York: Springer]. Finally a simulation study compares various versions of the proposed tests.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the case of the random design nonparametric regression, the double smoothing technique is applied to estimate the multivariate regression function. The proposed estimator has desirable properties in both the finite sample and the asymptotic cases. In the finite sample case, it has bounded conditional (and unconditional) bias and variance. On the other hand, in the asymptotic case, it has the same mean square error as the local linear estimator in Fan (Design-Adaptive Nonparametric Regression. Journal of the American Statistical Association 1992, 87, 998–1004; Local Linear Regression Smoothers and Their Minimax Efficiencies. Annals of Statistics 1993, 21, 196–216). Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed estimator is better than the local linear estimator, because it has a smaller sample mean integrated square error and gives smoother estimates.  相似文献

Consider a multiclass M/G/1 queue where queued customers are served in their order of arrival at a rate which depends on the customer class. We model this system using a chain with states represented by a tree. Since the service time distribution depends on the customer class, the stationary distribution is not of product form so there is no simple expression for the stationary distribution. Nevertheless, we can find a harmonic function on this chain which provides information about the asymptotics of this stationary distribution. The associated h‐transformation produces a change of measure that increases the arrival rate of customers and decreases the departure rate thus making large deviations common. The authors consider Bayesian methods for fitting three semiparametric survival models, incorporating time‐dependent covariates that are step functions. In particular, these are models due to Cox [Cox ( 1972 ) Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B, 34, 187–208], Prentice & Kalbfleisch and Cox & Oakes [Cox & Oakes ( 1984 ) Analysis of Survival Data, Chapman and Hall, London]. The model due to Prentice & Kalbfleisch [Prentice & Kalbfleisch ( 1979 ) Biometrics, 35, 25–39], which has seen very limited use, is given particular consideration. The prior for the baseline distribution in each model is taken to be a mixture of Polya trees and posterior inference is obtained through standard Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. They demonstrate the implementation and comparison of these three models on the celebrated Stanford heart transplant data and the study of the timing of cerebral edema diagnosis during emergency room treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis in children. An important feature of their overall discussion is the comparison of semi‐parametric families, and ultimate criterion based selection of a family within the context of a given data set. A segmented line regression model has been used to describe changes in cancer incidence and mortality trends [Kim, H.-J., Fay, M.P., Feuer, E.J. and Midthune, D.N., 2000, Permutation tests for joinpoint regression with applications to cancer rates. Statistics in Medicine, 19, 335–351. Kim, H.-J., Fay, M.P., Yu, B., Barrett., M.J. and Feuer, E.J., 2004, Comparability of segmented line regression models. Biometrics, 60, 1005–1014.]. The least squares fit can be obtained by using either the grid search method proposed by Lerman [Lerman, P.M., 1980, Fitting segmented regression models by grid search. Applied Statistics, 29, 77–84.] which is implemented in Joinpoint 3.0 available at http://srab.cancer.gov/joinpoint/index.html, or by using the continuous fitting algorithm proposed by Hudson [Hudson, D.J., 1966, Fitting segmented curves whose join points have to be estimated. Journal of the American Statistical Association, 61, 1097–1129.] which will be implemented in the next version of Joinpoint software. Following the least squares fitting of the model, inference on the parameters can be pursued by using the asymptotic results of Hinkley [Hinkley, D.V., 1971, Inference in two-phase regression. Journal of the American Statistical Association, 66, 736–743.] and Feder [Feder, P.I., 1975a, On asymptotic distribution theory in segmented regression Problems-Identified Case. The Annals of Statistics, 3, 49–83.] Feder [Feder, P.I., 1975b, The log likelihood ratio in segmented regression. The Annals of Statistics, 3, 84–97.] Via simulations, this paper empirically examines small sample behavior of these asymptotic results, studies how the two fitting methods, the grid search and the Hudson's algorithm affect these inferential procedures, and also assesses the robustness of the asymptotic inferential procedures.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the problem of seeking locally optimal designs for nonlinear dose‐response models with binary outcomes. Applying the theory of Tchebycheff Systems and other algebraic tools, we show that the locally D‐, A‐, and c‐optimal designs for three binary dose‐response models are minimally supported in finite, closed design intervals. The methods to obtain such designs are presented along with examples. The efficiencies of these designs are also discussed. For capture–recapture models when covariates are subject to measurement errors and missing data, a set of estimating equations is constructed to estimate population size and relevant parameters. These estimating equations can be solved by an algorithm similar to the EM algorithm. The proposed method is also applicable to the situation when covariates with no measurement errors have missing data. Simulation studies are used to assess the performance of the proposed estimator. The estimator is also applied to a capture–recapture experiment on the bird species Prinia flaviventris in Hong Kong.
