We use a Bayesian approach to fitting a linear regression model to transformations of the natural parameter for the exponential class of distributions. The usual Bayesian approach is to assume that a linear model exactly describes the relationship among the natural parameters. We assume only that a linear model is approximately in force. We approximate the theta-links by using a linear model obtained by minimizing the posterior expectation of a loss function.While some posterior results can be obtained analytically considerable generality follows from an exact Monte Carlo method for obtaining random samples of parameter values or functions of parameter values from their respective posterior distributions. The approach that is presented is justified for small samples, requires only one-dimensional numerical integrations, and allows for the use of regression matrices with less than full column rank. Two numerical examples are provided.  相似文献

The first two moments and product moments of absolute values of order statistics are obtained for the double exponential and the double Weibull distributions. In both of the distributions an optimum linear unbiased estimator of the scale parameter, by absolute values of the order statistics, is obtained from complete and censored samples of size n=3(1)10. It is found that the new estimator is generally more efficient than the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) of the scale parameter by order statistcs in both of the distributions.  相似文献

In this paper a measure of proximity of distributions, when moments are known, is proposed. Based on cases where the exact distribution is known, evidence is given that the proposed measure is accurate to evaluate the proximity of quantiles (exact vs. approximated). The measure may be applied to compare asymptotic and near-exact approximations to distributions, in situations where although being known the exact moments, the exact distribution is not known or the expression for its probability density function is not known or too complicated to handle. In this paper the measure is applied to compare newly proposed asymptotic and near-exact approximations to the distribution of the Wilks Lambda statistic when both groups of variables have an odd number of variables. This measure is also applied to the study of several cases of telescopic near-exact approximations to the exact distribution of the Wilks Lambda statistic based on mixtures of generalized near-integer gamma distributions.  相似文献

A generalized form of the Poisson Distribution with two parameters will be estimated by the Bayesian technique. When one of the parameters is known, several important parametric functions will be estimated and a numerical comparison with estimates obtained by the methods of maximum likelihood and unbiased minimum variance will be drawn. The simplicity of the posterior distribution of the unknown parameter enables us to construct exact probability intervals, and to devise a statistic to test the homogeneity of several populations. When the two parameters are unknown, dependent priors are being considered. Although the posterior distributions are sensitive to the choice of the prior, the posterior estimates are very stable and we use the Pearson system of curves to construct approximate posterior confidence limits for the parameters.  相似文献

In this article, we develop an empirical Bayesian approach for the Bayesian estimation of parameters in four bivariate exponential (BVE) distributions. We have opted for gamma distribution as a prior for the parameters of the model in which the hyper parameters have been estimated based on the method of moments and maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs). A simulation study was conducted to compute empirical Bayesian estimates of the parameters and their standard errors. We use moment estimators or MLEs to estimate the hyper parameters of the prior distributions. Furthermore, we compare the posterior mode of parameters obtained by different prior distributions and the Bayesian estimates based on gamma priors are very close to the true values as compared to improper priors. We use MCMC method to obtain the posterior mean and compared the same using the improper priors and the classical estimates, MLEs.  相似文献

A necessary and sufficient condition that a continuous, positive random variable follow a gamma distribution is given in terms of any one of its conditional finite moments and an expression involving its failure rate. The results are then used to develop a characterization for a mixture of two gamma distributions. The general results about characterization of a mixture of gamma distributions yield several special cases that have appeared separately in recent literature, including characterization of a single exponential distribution, characterization of a single gamma distribution (in terms of either first or second moments) and a sufficient condition for a mixture of two exponential distributions (in terms of first moments). The condition in this last result is shown to be necessary also. Numerous other cases are possible, using different choices for distribution parameters along with a selection of the mixing parameter, for either individual or mixtures of distributions. Various characterizations can be expressed using higher order moments, too.  相似文献

In this note we give recurrence relations satisfied by single and product momenrs of k-th upper-record values from the Pareto, generalized Pareto and Burr distributions. From these relations one can obtain all the single and product moments of all k-th record values and at the same time all record values ( k=1). Moreover, we see that the single and product moment of all k-th record values from these distributions can be exprrssed in terms of the moments of the minimal statistic of a k-sample from the exponential distribution may be deduced by letting the shape parameter deptend to 0. At the end we give characterizations of the three distributions considered. These results generalize, among other things, those given by Balakrishnan and Abuamllah (1994).  相似文献

In this paper, the task of determining expected values of sample moments, where the sample members have been selected based on noisy information, is considered. This task is a recurring problem in the theory of evolution strategies. Exact expressions for expected values of sums of products of concomitants of selected order statistics are derived. Then, using Edgeworth and Cornish-Fisher approximations, explicit results that depend on coefficients that can be determined numerically are obtained. While the results are exact only for normal populations, it is shown experimentally that including skewness and kurtosis in the calculations can yield greatly improved results for other distributions.  相似文献

An accurate procedure is proposed to calculate approximate moments of progressive order statistics in the context of statistical inference for lifetime models. The study analyses the performance of power series expansion to approximate the moments for location and scale distributions with high precision and smaller deviations with respect to the exact values. A comparative analysis between exact and approximate methods is shown using some tables and figures. The different approximations are applied in two situations. First, we consider the problem of computing the large sample variance–covariance matrix of maximum likelihood estimators. We also use the approximations to obtain progressively censored sampling plans for log-normal distributed data. These problems illustrate that the presented procedure is highly useful to compute the moments with precision for numerous censoring patterns and, in many cases, is the only valid method because the exact calculation may not be applicable.  相似文献

New techniques for the analysis of stochastic volatility models in which the logarithm of conditional variance follows an autoregressive model are developed. A cyclic Metropolis algorithm is used to construct a Markov-chain simulation tool. Simulations from this Markov chain converge in distribution to draws from the posterior distribution enabling exact finite-sample inference. The exact solution to the filtering/smoothing problem of inferring about the unobserved variance states is a by-product of our Markov-chain method. In addition, multistep-ahead predictive densities can be constructed that reflect both inherent model variability and parameter uncertainty. We illustrate our method by analyzing both daily and weekly data on stock returns and exchange rates. Sampling experiments are conducted to compare the performance of Bayes estimators to method of moments and quasi-maximum likelihood estimators proposed in the literature. In both parameter estimation and filtering, the Bayes estimators outperform these other approaches.  相似文献

The existing synthetic exponential control charts are based on the assumption of known in-control parameter. However, the in-control parameter has to be estimated from a Phase I dataset. In this article, we use the exact probability distribution, especially the percentiles, mean, and standard deviation of the conditional average run length (ARL) to evaluate the effect of parameter estimation on the performance of the Phase II synthetic exponential charts. This approach accounts for the variability in the conditional ARL values of the synthetic chart obtained by different practitioners. Since parameter estimation results in more false alarms than expected, we develop an exact method to design the adjusted synthetic charts with desired conditional in-control performance. Results of known and unknown in-control parameter cases show that the control limit of the conforming run length sub-chart of the synthetic chart should be as small as possible.  相似文献

Recently, Kambo and his co-researchers (2012) proposed a method of approximation for evaluating the one-dimensional renewal function based on the first three moments. Their method is simple and elegant, which gives exact values for well-known distributions. In this article, we propose an analogous method for the evaluation of bivariate renewal function based on the first two moments of the variables and their joint moment. The proposed method yields exact results for certain widely used bivariate distributions like bivariate exponential distribution, bivariate Weibull distributions, and bivariate Pareto distributions. An illustrative example in the form of a two-dimensional warranty problem is considered and comparisons of our method are made with the results of other models.  相似文献

A new class of location-parameter discrete probability distributions (LDPD) has been defined where the population mean is the location parameter. It has been shown that some single parameter discrete distributions do not belong to this class and all discrete probability distributions belonging to this class can be characterized by their variances only. Expressions are given for the first four central moments and a recurrence formula for higher central moments has been obtained. Eight theorems are given to characterize the various distributions in the LDPD class.  相似文献

In this article, posterior distribution, posterior moments, and predictive distribution for the modified power series distributions deformed at any of a support point under linex and generalized entropy loss function are derived. It is assumed that the prior information can be summarized by a uniform, Beta, two-sided power, Gamma, or generalized Pareto distributions. In this paper, recurrence relations from a general class of doubly truncated continuous distributions which are satisfied by single as well as product moments of order statistics are obtained. Recurrence relations from doubly truncated generalized Weibull, exponential, Raleigh and logistic distributions have been derived as special cases of our result, Some previous results for doubly truncated Weibull, standard exponential, power function and Burr type XII distributions are obtained as special cases. The general recurrence relation of single moments has been used in the case of the left and right truncation to characterize the Weibull, Burr type XII and Pareto distributions.  相似文献

The exact distribution of a renewal counting process is not easy to compute and is rarely of closed form. In this article, we approximate the distribution of a renewal process using families of generalized Poisson distributions. We first compute approximations to the first several moments of the renewal process. In some cases, a closed form approximation is obtained. It is found that each family considered has its own strengths and weaknesses. Some new families of generalized Poisson distributions are recommended. Theorems are obtained determining when these variance to mean ratios are less than (or exceed) one without having to find the mean and variance. Some numerical comparisons are also made.  相似文献

Standard and fully exponential form Laplace approximations to marginal densities are described and conditions under which these give exact answers are investigated. A general result is obtained and is subsequently applied in the case of natural exponential families with cuts, in order to derive the marginal posterior density of the mean parameter corresponding to the cut, the canonical parameter corresponding to the complement of the cut and transformations of these. As special cases improper prior and Poisson prior (which is a natural choice) are considered, and formulae for the marginal and posterior distributions are obtained. We discuss Bayesian analyses of traditional normal-mixture models for classification and discrimination. The development involves application of an iterative resampling approach to Monte Carlo inference, commonly called Gibbs sampling, and demonstrates routine application. We stress the benefits of exact analyses over traditional classification and discrimination techniques, including the ease with which such analyses may be performed in a quite general setting, with possibly several normal-mixture components having different covariance matrices, the computation of exact posterior classification probabilities for observed data and for future cases to be classified, and posterior distributions for these probabilities that allow for assessment of second-level uncertainties in classification.  相似文献
