In this paper, we focus on the problem of factor screening in nonregular two-level designs through gradually reducing the number of possible sets of active factors. We are particularly concerned with situations when three or four factors are active. Our proposed method works through examining fits of projection models, where variable selection techniques are used to reduce the number of terms. To examine the reliability of the methods in combination with such techniques, a panel of models consisting of three or four active factors with data generated from the 12-run and the 20-run Plackett–Burman (PB) design is used. The dependence of the procedure on the amount of noise, the number of active factors and the number of experimental factors is also investigated. For designs with few runs such as the 12-run PB design, variable selection should be done with care and default procedures in computer software may not be reliable to which we suggest improvements. A real example is included to show how we propose factor screening can be done in practice.  相似文献

Comparison of Four New General Classes of Search Designs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A factor screening experiment identifies a few important factors from a large list of factors that potentially influence the response. If a list consists of m factors each at three levels, a design is a subset of all possible 3 m runs. This paper considers the problem of finding designs with small numbers of runs, using the search linear model introduced in Srivastava (1975). The paper presents four new general classes of these 'search designs', each with 2 m −1 runs, which permit, at most, two important factors out of m factors to be searched for and identified. The paper compares the designs for 4 ≤ m ≤ 10, using arithmetic and geometric means of the determinants, traces and maximum characteristic roots of particular matrices. Two of the designs are found to be superior in all six criteria studied. The four designs are identical for m = 3 and this design is an optimal design in the class of all search designs under the six criteria. The four designs are also identical for m = 4 under some row and column permutations.  相似文献

In this article we discuss multistage group screening in which group-factors contain differing number of factors. We describe a procedure for grouping the factors in the absence of concrete prior information, so that the relative testing cost is minimal. It Is shown that under quite general conditions, these designs will require fewer runs than the equivalent designs in which the group-factors contain same number of factors.  相似文献

As an important class of space-filling designs, uniform designs (UDs) choose a set of points over a certain domain such that these points are uniformly scattered, under a specific discrepancy measure. They have been applied successfully in many industrial and scientific experiments since they appeared in 1980. A noteworthy and practical advantage is their ability to investigate a large number of high-level factors simultaneously with a fairly economical set of experimental runs. As a result, UDs can be properly used as experimental plans that are intended to derive the significant factors from a list of many potential ones. To this end, a new screening procedure is introduced via penalized least squares. A simulation study is conducted to support the proposed method, which reveals that it can be considered quite promising and expedient, as judged in terms of Type I and Type II error rates.  相似文献

Supersaturated designs are factorial designs in which the number of potential effects is greater than the run size. They are commonly used in screening experiments, with the aim of identifying the dominant active factors with low cost. However, an important research field, which is poorly developed, is the analysis of such designs with non-normal response. In this article, we develop a variable selection strategy, through the modification of the PageRank algorithm, which is commonly used in the Google search engine for ranking Webpages. The proposed method incorporates an appropriate information theoretical measure into this algorithm and as a result, it can be efficiently used for factor screening. A noteworthy advantage of this procedure is that it allows the use of supersaturated designs for analyzing discrete data and therefore a generalized linear model is assumed. As it is depicted via a thorough simulation study, in which the Type I and Type II error rates are computed for a wide range of underlying models and designs, the presented approach can be considered quite advantageous and effective.  相似文献

There has been much recent interest in supersaturated designs and their application in factor screening experiments. Supersaturated designs have mainly been constructed by using the E ( s 2)-optimality criterion originally proposed by Booth and Cox in 1962. However, until now E ( s 2)-optimal designs have only been established with certainty for n experimental runs when the number of factors m is a multiple of n-1 , and in adjacent cases where m = q ( n -1) + r (| r | 2, q an integer). A method of constructing E ( s 2)-optimal designs is presented which allows a reasonably complete solution to be found for various numbers of runs n including n ,=8 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, 48, 64.  相似文献

A lower bound for the Es2 value of an arbitrary supersaturated design is derived. A general method for constructing supersaturated designs is proposed and shown to produce designs with n runs and m = k(n — 1) factors that achieve the lower bound for Es2 and are thus optimal with respect to the Es2 criterion. Within the class of designs given by the construction method, further discrimination can be made by minimizing the pairwise correlations and using the generalized D and A criteria proposed by Wu (1993). Efficient designs of 12, 16, 20 and 24 runs are constructed by following this approach.  相似文献

Supersaturated designs offer a potentially useful way to investigate many factors in few experiments i.e. typical screening situations. Their design properties have mainly been evaluated based on their ability to identify and estimate main effects. Projective properties have received little attention. In this paper we show how to construct two-level supersaturated designs for 2(n−2) factors in n runs (n a multiple of four) of projectivity P=3 or near projectivity P=3 from orthogonal non-regular two-level designs. The designs obtained also have favourable properties such as low maximum absolute value of the inner product between a main effect column and a two-factor interaction column and relatively few types of different projections onto subsets consisting of three factor columns.  相似文献

In order to select the most influential parameters of a building thermal model, a group screening technique was conducted. This technique uses regression analysis and experimental Plackett and Burman designs. After 136 simulations, 23 factors were selected from the initial set of 390. We came to the conclusion that global output variations (obtained with all parameters) can be accurately predicted from these 23 parameters. On the other hand, the results confirmed that group screening can be employed in the case of the building energy models despite the fact that the signs of the parameter effects are unknown. For the analysed configuration, the effects were found to be strongly influenced by the exchanged heat flows. In addition, the influential parameters (with respect to the inner air temperature) were all related to the building components having the largest heat exchange with the air cell.  相似文献

Supersaturated designs are a large class of factorial designs which can be used for screening out the important factors from a large set of potentially active variables. The huge advantage of these designs is that they reduce the experimental cost drastically, but their critical disadvantage is the confounding involved in the statistical analysis. In this article, we propose a method for analyzing data using several types of supersaturated designs. Modifications of widely used information criteria are given and applied to the variable selection procedure for the identification of the active factors. Sequential experiment is an indispensable strategy and is applied immensely to various fields of science and engineering. In such experiments, it is desirable that a given design should retain the properties as much as possible when few runs are added to it. The designs based on sequential experiment strategy are called extended designs. In this paper, we have studied theoretical properties of such experimental strategies using uniformity measure. We have also derived a lower bound of extended designs under wrap-around L2-discrepancy measure. Moreover, we have provided an algorithm to construct uniform (or nearly uniform) extended designs. For ease of understanding, some examples are also presented and a lot of sequential strategies for a 27-run original design are tabulated for practice.  相似文献

Supersaturated designs (SSDs) are defined as fractional factorial designs whose experimental run size is smaller than the number of main effects to be estimated. While most of the literature on SSDs has focused only on main effects designs, the construction and analysis of such designs involving interactions has not been developed to a great extent. In this paper, we propose a backward elimination design-driven optimization (BEDDO) method, with one main goal in mind, to eliminate the factors which are identified to be fully aliased or highly partially aliased with each other in the design. Under the proposed BEDDO method, we implement and combine correlation-based statistical measures taken from classical test theory and design of experiments field, and we also present an optimality criterion which is a modified form of Cronbach's alpha coefficient. In this way, we provide a new class of computer-aided unbalanced SSDs involving interactions, that derive directly from BEDDO optimization.  相似文献

A usual assumption of this procedure is that the directions of possible effects are known. In practice, however, this assumption i s often unreasonable. This paper examines, in the case of no errors in observations, the performance of multistage group screening when this assumption is false . To explore the projection efficiency of a design, Tsai, et al [2000. Projective three-level main effects designs robust to model uncertainty. Biometrika 87, 467–475] introduced the Q criterion to compare three-level main-effects designs for quantitative factors that allow the consideration of interactions in addition to main effects. In this paper, we extend their method and focus on the case in which experimenters have some prior knowledge, in advance of running the experiment, about the probabilities of effects being non-negligible. A criterion which incorporates experimenters’ prior beliefs about the importance of each effect is introduced to compare orthogonal, or nearly orthogonal, main effects designs with robustness to interactions as a secondary consideration. We show that this criterion, exploiting prior information about model uncertainty, can lead to more appropriate designs reflecting experimenters’ prior beliefs.  相似文献

We introduce a new class of supersaturated designs using Bayesian D-optimality. The designs generated using this approach can have arbitrary sample sizes, can have any number of blocks of any size, and can incorporate categorical factors with more than two levels. In side by side diagnostic comparisons based on the E(s2)E(s2) criterion for two-level experiments having even sample size, our designs either match or out-perform the best designs published to date. The generality of the method is illustrated with quality improvement experiment with 15 runs and 20 factors in 3 blocks.  相似文献

The identification of active effects in supersaturated designs (SSDs) constitutes a problem of considerable interest to both scientists and engineers. The complicated structure of the design matrix renders the analysis of such designs a complicated issue. Although several methods have been proposed so far, a solution to the problem beyond one or two active factors seems to be inadequate. This article presents a heuristic approach for analyzing SSDs using the cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM) under a sure independence screening approach. Simulations are used to investigate the performance of the method comparing the proposed method with other well-known methods from the literature. The results establish the powerfulness of the proposed methodology.  相似文献
