A major problem with satellite-sensed agricultural surveys is loss of data due to cloud cover. The Large Area Crop Inventory Ex¬periment (LACIE) run by three Federal agencies (NASA, NOAA, and USDA) in the years 1974-1977 used a ratioing approach to account for missing data. This approach is found to be reasonable in that it is unbiased with respect to a plausible crop acreage time series model. At the same time, the arbitrary nature of the LACIE proce¬dure's rules for ratioing suggests that improvements to it can be made, thus motivating the discussion of general linear estimators and the development of the 'weighted aggregation' (WAG) procedure. Estimated variances of the LACIE and WAG procedures for an actual LACIE data set indicate that the LACIE procedure, although somewhat heuristic, performs rather well, having an estimated variance 12% higher than that of the WAG, which is theoretically optimal  相似文献

Small area estimation has received considerable attention in recent years because of growing demand for small area statistics. Basic area‐level and unit‐level models have been studied in the literature to obtain empirical best linear unbiased prediction (EBLUP) estimators of small area means. Although this classical method is useful for estimating the small area means efficiently under normality assumptions, it can be highly influenced by the presence of outliers in the data. In this article, the authors investigate the robustness properties of the classical estimators and propose a resistant method for small area estimation, which is useful for downweighting any influential observations in the data when estimating the model parameters. To estimate the mean squared errors of the robust estimators of small area means, a parametric bootstrap method is adopted here, which is applicable to models with block diagonal covariance structures. Simulations are carried out to study the behaviour of the proposed robust estimators in the presence of outliers, and these estimators are also compared to the EBLUP estimators. Performance of the bootstrap mean squared error estimator is also investigated in the simulation study. The proposed robust method is also applied to some real data to estimate crop areas for counties in Iowa, using farm‐interview data on crop areas and LANDSAT satellite data as auxiliary information. A major application of satellite remote sensing is the estimation of the acreage of agricultural crops. The potential for crop yield estimation using satellite remote sensing exists, but research in this area is still in its early stages. In this paper we survey the methodology for using remotely sensed data in agricultural surveys, based primarily on research conducted during the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE) and the follow-on program Agricultural Research and Inventory Surveys Through Aerospace Remote Sensing (AgRISTARS). The data obtained from multispectral scanner (MSS) and thematic mapper (TM) sensors onboard the Landsat series of satellites are described. Approaches for preprocessing, transferring, and modeling these data for understanding the relationship between their temporal behavior and crop growth cycles are discussed. Finally, techniques for crop identification and area and yield estimation are briefly described  相似文献

Varying coefficient partially linear models are usually used for longitudinal data analysis, and an interest is mainly to improve efficiency of regression coefficients. By the orthogonality estimation technology and the quadratic inference function method, we propose a new orthogonality-based estimation method to estimate parameter and nonparametric components in varying coefficient partially linear models with longitudinal data. The proposed procedure can separately estimate the parametric and nonparametric components, and the resulting estimators do not affect each other. Under some mild conditions, we establish some asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators. Furthermore, the finite sample performance of the proposed procedure is assessed by some simulation experiments.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of combining k unbiased estimates, x i of a parameter,μ, where each estimate, x i is the average of n i + l independent normal observations with unknown mean, μ, and unknown variance, σ i 2. The behavior of several commonly used estimators of μ is studied by means of an empirical sampling study, and the empirical results of this experiment are interpreted in terms of previous theoretical results. Finally, some extrapolations are made as to how these estimators might behave under varying conditions, and some new estimators are proposed which might have higher efficiencies under certain conditions than those which are generally used.  相似文献

This paper deals with estimation of population median in simple and stratified random samplings by using auxiliary information. Auxiliary information is rarely used in estimating population median, although there have been many studies to estimate population mean using auxiliary information. In this study, we suggest some estimators using auxiliary information such as mode and range of an auxiliary variable and correlation coefficient. We also expand these estimators to stratified random sampling for combined and separate estimators. We obtain mean square error equations for all proposed estimators and find theoretical conditions. These conditions are also supported by using numerical examples.  相似文献

Increasing-block prices are common in markets for water, cellular phone service, and retail electricity. This study estimates demand models under block prices and conducts a Monte Carlo experiment to test the small-sample bias of structural and instrumental variables (IV) estimators. We estimate the price and income elasticity of water demand under increasing-block prices using a structural discrete/continuous choice (DCC) model, as well as random effects and IV. Elasticity estimates are sensitive to the modeling framework. The Monte Carlo experiment suggests that IV and DCC models estimate both price and income elasticity with bias, with no clear best choice among estimators.  相似文献

Measures of distributional symmetry based on quantiles, L-moments, and trimmed L-moments are briefly reviewed, and (asymptotic) sampling properties of commonly used estimators considered. Standard errors are estimated using both analytical and computer-intensive methods. Simulation is used to assess results when sampling from some known distributions; bootstrapping is used on sample data to estimate standard errors, construct confidence intervals, and test a hypothesis of distributional symmetry. Symmetry measures based on 2- or 3-trimmed L-moments have some advantages over other measures in terms of their existence. Their estimators are generally well behaved, even in relatively small samples.  相似文献

A variety of nonparametric and parametric methods have been used to estimate the mean cumulative function (MCF) for the recurrence data collected from the counting process. When the recurrence histories of some units are available in disconnected observation windows with gaps in between, Zuo et al. (2008) showed that both the nonparametric and parametric methods can be extended to estimate the MCF. In this article, we establish some asymptotic properties of the MCF estimators for the window-observation recurrence data.  相似文献

In this paper, we study linear regression analysis when some of the censoring indicators are missing at random. We define regression calibration estimate, imputation estimate and inverse probability weighted estimate for the regression coefficient vector based on the weighted least squared approach due to Stute (1993), and prove all the estimators are asymptotically normal. A simulation study was conducted to evaluate the finite properties of the proposed estimators, and a real data example is provided to illustrate our methods.  相似文献

This paper presents a method of estimation of crop-production statistics at smaller geographical levels like a community development block (generally referred to as a block) to make area-specific plans for agricultural development programmes in India. Using available district-level data on crop yield from crop-cutting experiments and data on auxiliary variables from various administrative sources, a suitable regression model is fitted. The fitted model is then used to predict the crop production at the block level. Some scaled estimators are also developed using predicted estimates. An empirical study is also carried out to judge the merits of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

We develop and study in the framework of Pareto-type distributions a class of nonparametric kernel estimators for the conditional second order tail parameter. The estimators are obtained by local estimation of the conditional second order parameter using a moving window approach. Asymptotic normality of the proposed class of kernel estimators is proven under some suitable conditions on the kernel function and the conditional tail quantile function. The nonparametric estimators for the second order parameter are subsequently used to obtain a class of bias-corrected kernel estimators for the conditional tail index. In particular it is shown how for a given kernel function one obtains a bias-corrected kernel function, and that replacing the second order parameter in the latter with a consistent estimator does not change the limiting distribution of the bias-corrected estimator for the conditional tail index. The finite sample behavior of some specific estimators is illustrated with a simulation experiment. The developed methodology is also illustrated on fire insurance claim data.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of parameter estimation for two dimensional (2-D) multi-component harmonics in non zero-mean multiplicative and additive noise. The least squares estimators (LSEs) are proposed to estimate the coherent model parameters, and some statistical results of the LSEs are obtained, including strong consistency, strong convergence rate, and asymptotic normality. Furthermore, the LSEs-based estimators are proposed to estimate the noncoherent model parameters, and the strong consistency and the asymptotic normality are also proved. Finally, some numerical experiments are performed to see how the asymptotic results work for finite sample sizes.  相似文献

Abstract. We introduce and study a class of weighted functional estimators for the coefficient of tail dependence in bivariate extreme value statistics. Asymptotic normality of these estimators is established under a second‐order condition on the joint tail behaviour, some conditions on the weight function and for appropriately chosen sequences of intermediate order statistics. Asymptotically unbiased estimators are constructed by judiciously chosen linear combinations of weighted functional estimators, and variance optimality within this class of asymptotically unbiased estimators is discussed. The finite sample performance of some specific examples from our class of estimators and some alternatives from the recent literature are evaluated with a small simulation experiment.  相似文献

Some quality characteristics are well defined when treated as the response variables and their relationships are identified to some independent variables. This relationship is called a profile. The parametric models, such as linear models, may be used to model the profiles. However, due to the complexity of many processes in practical applications, it is inappropriate to model the process using parametric models. In these cases non parametric methods are used to model the processes. One of the most applicable non parametric methods used to model complicated profiles is the wavelet. Many authors considered the use of the wavelet transformation only for monitoring the processes in phase II. The problem of estimating the in-control profile in phase I using wavelet transformation is not deeply addressed. Usually classical estimators are used in phase I to estimate the in-control profiles, even when the wavelet transformation is used. These estimators are suitable if the data do not contain outliers. However, when the outliers exist, these estimators cannot estimate the in-control profile properly. In this research, a robust method of estimating the in-control profiles is proposed, which is insensitive to the presence of outliers and could be applied when the wavelet transformation is used. The proposed estimator is the combination of the robust clustering and the S-estimator. This estimator is compared with the classical estimator of the in-control profile in the presence of outliers. The results from a large simulation study show that using the proposed method, one can estimate the in-control profile precisely when the data are contaminated either locally or globally.  相似文献

This article investigates the asymptotic properties of quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimators for random-effects panel data transformation models where both the response and (some of) the covariates are subject to transformations for inducing normality, flexible functional form, homoskedasticity, and simple model structure. We develop a QML-type procedure for model estimation and inference. We prove the consistency and asymptotic normality of the QML estimators, and propose a simple bootstrap procedure that leads to a robust estimate of the variance-covariance (VC) matrix. Monte Carlo results reveal that the QML estimators perform well in finite samples, and that the gains by using the robust VC matrix estimate for inference can be enormous.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a new class of estimators to estimate the finite population mean by using two auxiliary variables under two different sampling schemes such as simple random sampling and stratified random sampling. The proposed class of estimators gives minimum mean squared error as compared to all other considered estimators. Some real data sets are used to observe the performances of the estimators. We show numerically that the proposed class of estimators performs better as compared to all other competitor estimators.  相似文献

This paper introduces some robust estimation procedures to estimate quantiles of a continuous random variable based on data, without any other assumptions of probability distribution. We construct a reasonable linear regression model to connect the relationship between a suitable symmetric data transformation and the approximate standard normal statistics. Statistical properties of this linear regression model and its applications are studied, including estimators of quantiles, quartile mean, quartile deviation, correlation coefficient of quantiles and standard errors of these estimators. We give some empirical examples to illustrate the statistical properties and apply our estimators to grouping data.  相似文献

Chirp signals are quite common in many natural and man-made systems such as audio signals, sonar, and radar. Estimation of the unknown parameters of a signal is a fundamental problem in statistical signal processing. Recently, Kundu and Nandi [Parameter estimation of chirp signals in presence of stationary noise. Stat Sin. 2008;75:187–201] studied the asymptotic properties of least squares estimators (LSEs) of the unknown parameters of a simple chirp signal model under the assumption of stationary noise. In this paper, we propose periodogram-type estimators called the approximate least squares estimators (ALSEs) to estimate the unknown parameters and study the asymptotic properties of these estimators under the same error assumptions. It is observed that the ALSEs are strongly consistent and asymptotically equivalent to the LSEs. Similar to the periodogram estimators, these estimators can also be used as initial guesses to find the LSEs of the unknown parameters. We perform some numerical simulations to see the performance of the proposed estimators and compare them with the LSEs and the estimators proposed by Lahiri et al. [Efficient algorithm for estimating the parameters of two dimensional chirp signal. Sankhya B. 2013;75(1):65–89]. We have analysed two real data sets for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

To model growth curves in survival analysis and biological studies the logistic distribution has been widely used. In this article, we propose a goodness-of-fit test for the logistic distribution based on an estimate of the Gini index. The exact distribution of the proposed test statistic and also its asymptotic distribution are presented. In order to compute the proposed test statistic, parameters of the logistic distribution are estimated by approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLEs), which are simple explicit estimators. Through Monte Carlo simulations, power comparisons of the proposed test with some known competing tests are carried. Finally, an illustrative example is presented and analyzed.  相似文献
