The conditional distribution given complete sufficient statistics is used along with the Rao-Blackwell theorem to obtain uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators after a transformation to normality has been applied to data. The estimators considered are for the mean, the variance and the cumulative distribution of the original non-normal data. Previous procedures to obtain UMVU estimators have used Laplace transforms, Taylor expansions and the jackknife. An integration method developed in this paper requires only integrability of the normalizing transformation function. This method is easy to employ and it is always possible to obtain a numerical result.  相似文献

Log-normal linear models are widely used in applications, and many times it is of interest to predict the response variable or to estimate the mean of the response variable at the original scale for a new set of covariate values. In this paper we consider the problem of efficient estimation of the conditional mean of the response variable at the original scale for log-normal linear models. Several existing estimators are reviewed first, including the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator, the restricted ML (REML) estimator, the uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimator, and a bias-corrected REML estimator. We then propose two estimators that minimize the asymptotic mean squared error and the asymptotic bias, respectively. A parametric bootstrap procedure is also described to obtain confidence intervals for the proposed estimators. Both the new estimators and the bootstrap procedure are very easy to implement. Comparisons of the estimators using simulation studies suggest that our estimators perform better than the existing ones, and the bootstrap procedure yields confidence intervals with good coverage properties. A real application of estimating the mean sediment discharge is used to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

For a random variable obeying the inverse Gaussian distribu-tion and its reciprocal, the uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators of each mode are obtained. The UMVU estimators

of the left and right limits of a certain interval which contains an inverse Gaussian variate with an arbitrary given probability are also proposed.  相似文献

Motivated by Sampath [Finite population variance estimation under LSS with multiple random starts, Commun. Statist. – Theory Methods 38 (2009), pp. 3596–3607], in this paper unbiased estimators for population variance have been developed under linear systematic sampling, balanced systematic sampling and modified systematic sampling with multiple random starts. Expressions for variances of the estimators are also developed. Detailed numerical comparative studies have been carried out to study the performances of the estimators under various systematic sampling schemes with multiple random starts and some interesting conclusions have been drawn out of the study.  相似文献

For the balanced random effects models, when the variance components are correlated either naturally or through common prior structures, by assuming a mixed prior distribution for the variance components, we propose some new Bayesian estimators. To contrast and compare the new estimators with the minimum variance unbiased (MVUE) and restricted maximum likelihood estimators (RMLE), some simulation studies are also carried out. It turns out that the proposed estimators have smaller mean squared errors than the MVUE and RMLE.  相似文献

A precise estimator for the log-normal mean   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The log-normal distribution is frequently encountered in applications. The uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimator for the log-normal mean is given explicitly by a formula found by Finney in 1941. In contrast to this the most commonly used estimator for a log-normal mean is the sample mean. This is possibly due to the complexity of the formula given by Finney. A modified maximum likelihood estimator which approximates the UMVU estimator is derived here. It is sufficiently simple to be implemented in elementary spreadsheet applications. An elementary approximate formula for the root-mean-square error of the suggested estimator and the UMVU estimator is presented. The suggested estimator is compared with the sample mean, the maximum likelihood, and the UMVU estimators by Monte Carlo simulation in terms of root-mean-square error.  相似文献

Suppose that the function f is of recursive type and the random variable X is normally distributed with mean μ and variance α2. We set C = f(x). Neyman & Scott (1960) and Hoyle (1968) gave the UMVU estimators for the mean E(C) and for the variance Var(C) from independent and identically distributed random variables X1,…, Xn(n ≧ 2) having a normal distribution with mean μ and variance σ2, respectively. Shimizu & Iwase (1981) gave the variance of the UMVU estimator for E(C). In this paper, the variance of the UMVU estimator for Var(C) is given.  相似文献

Estimation of covariance components in the multivariate random-effect model with nested covariance structure is discussed. There are two covariance matrices to be estimated, namely, the between-group and the within-group covariance matrices. These two covariance matrices are most often estimated by forming a multivariate analysis of variance and equating mean square matrices to their expectations. Such a procedure involves taking the difference between the between-group mean square and the within-group mean square matrices, and often produces an estimated between-group covariance matrix that is not nonnegative definite. We present estimators of the two covariance matrices that are always proper covariance matrices. The estimators are the restricted maximum likelihood estimators if the random effects are normally distributed. The estimation procedure is extended to more complicated models, including the twofold nested and the mixed-effect models. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the use of the estimation procedure.  相似文献

The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) and related summary indices are widely used for assessment of accuracy of an individual and comparison of performances of several diagnostic systems in many areas including studies of human perception, decision making, and the regulatory approval process for new diagnostic technologies. Many investigators have suggested implementing the bootstrap approach to estimate variability of AUC-based indices. Corresponding bootstrap quantities are typically estimated by sampling a bootstrap distribution. Such a process, frequently termed Monte Carlo bootstrap, is often computationally burdensome and imposes an additional sampling error on the resulting estimates. In this article, we demonstrate that the exact or ideal (sampling error free) bootstrap variances of the nonparametric estimator of AUC can be computed directly, i.e., avoiding resampling of the original data, and we develop easy-to-use formulas to compute them. We derive the formulas for the variances of the AUC corresponding to a single given or random reader, and to the average over several given or randomly selected readers. The derived formulas provide an algorithm for computing the ideal bootstrap variances exactly and hence improve many bootstrap methods proposed earlier for analyzing AUCs by eliminating the sampling error and sometimes burdensome computations associated with a Monte Carlo (MC) approximation. In addition, the availability of closed-form solutions provides the potential for an analytical assessment of the properties of bootstrap variance estimators. Applications of the proposed method are shown on two experimentally ascertained datasets that illustrate settings commonly encountered in diagnostic imaging. In the context of the two examples we also demonstrate the magnitude of the effect of the sampling error of the MC estimators on the resulting inferences.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present article, an effort has been made to develop calibration estimators of the population mean under two-stage stratified random sampling design when auxiliary information is available at primary stage unit (psu) level. The properties of the developed estimators are derived in-terms of design based approximate variance and approximate consistent design based estimator of the variance. Some simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relative performance of calibration estimator over the usual estimator of the population mean without using auxiliary information in two-stage stratified random sampling. Proposed calibration estimators have outperformed the usual estimator without using auxiliary information.  相似文献

Longitudinal surveys have emerged in recent years as an important data collection tool for population studies where the primary interest is to examine population changes over time at the individual level. Longitudinal data are often analyzed through the generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach. The vast majority of existing literature on the GEE method; however, is developed under non‐survey settings and are inappropriate for data collected through complex sampling designs. In this paper the authors develop a pseudo‐GEE approach for the analysis of survey data. They show that survey weights must and can be appropriately accounted in the GEE method under a joint randomization framework. The consistency of the resulting pseudo‐GEE estimators is established under the proposed framework. Linearization variance estimators are developed for the pseudo‐GEE estimators when the finite population sampling fractions are small or negligible, a scenario often held for large‐scale surveys. Finite sample performances of the proposed estimators are investigated through an extensive simulation study using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. The results show that the pseudo‐GEE estimators and the linearization variance estimators perform well under several sampling designs and for both continuous and binary responses. In this paper we present methods for inference on data selected by a complex sampling design for a class of statistical models for the analysis of ordinal variables. Specifically, assuming that the sampling scheme is not ignorable, we derive for the class of cub models (Combination of discrete Uniform and shifted Binomial distributions) variance estimates for a complex two stage stratified sample. Both Taylor linearization and repeated replication variance estimators are presented. We also provide design‐based test diagnostics and goodness‐of‐fit measures. We illustrate by means of real data analysis the differences between survey‐weighted and unweighted point estimates and inferences for cub model parameters.  相似文献

Imputation is often used in surveys to treat item nonresponse. It is well known that treating the imputed values as observed values may lead to substantial underestimation of the variance of the point estimators. To overcome the problem, a number of variance estimation methods have been proposed in the literature, including resampling methods such as the jackknife and the bootstrap. In this paper, we consider the problem of doubly robust inference in the presence of imputed survey data. In the doubly robust literature, point estimation has been the main focus. In this paper, using the reverse framework for variance estimation, we derive doubly robust linearization variance estimators in the case of deterministic and random regression imputation within imputation classes. Also, we study the properties of several jackknife variance estimators under both negligible and nonnegligible sampling fractions. A limited simulation study investigates the performance of various variance estimators in terms of relative bias and relative stability. Finally, the asymptotic normality of imputed estimators is established for stratified multistage designs under both deterministic and random regression imputation. We present some unbiased estimators at the population mean in a finite population sample surveys with simple random sampling design where information on an auxiliary variance x positively correlated with the main variate y is available. Exact variance and unbiased estimate of the variance are computed for any sample size. These estimators are compared for their precision with the mean per unit and the ratio estimators. Modifications of the estimators are suggested to make them more precise than the mean per unit estimator or the ratio estimator regardless of the value of the population correlation coefficient between the variates x and y. Asymptotic distribution of our estimators and confidnece intervals for the population mean are also obtained.  相似文献

The authors consider general estimators for the mean and variance parameters in the random effect model and in the transformation model for data with multiple levels of variation. They show that these estimators have different distributions under the two models unless all the variables have Gaussian distributions. They investigate the asymptotic properties of bootstrap procedures designed for the two models. They also report simulation results and illustrate the bootstraps using data on red spruce trees.  相似文献

The traditional method for estimating or predicting linear combinations of the fixed effects and realized values of the random effects in mixed linear models is first to estimate the variance components and then to proceed as if the estimated values of the variance components were the true values. This two-stage procedure gives unbiased estimators or predictors of the linear combinations provided the data vector is symmetrically distributed about its expected value and provided the variance component estimators are translation-invariant and are even functions of the data vector. The standard procedures for estimating the variance components yield even, translation-invariant estimators.  相似文献

Parameter values of nonlinear statistical models are typically estimated from data using iterative numerical procedures. The resulting joint sampling distribution of the parameter estimators is often intractable, resulting in the use of approximators or Monte Carlo simulation to determine properties of the sampling distribution.

This paper develops methods, using linear and higher-order approximators as control variates that reduce the variance of the Monte Carlo estimator by orders of magnitude. Estimation of means, higher-order raw moments, variances, covariances, and percentiles is considered.  相似文献

Recognizing that the efficiency in relative risk estimation for the Cox proportional hazards model is largely constrained by the total number of cases, Prentice (1986) proposed the case-cohort design in which covariates are measured on all cases and on a random sample of the cohort. Subsequent to Prentice, other methods of estimation and sampling have been proposed for these designs. We formalize an approach to variance estimation suggested by Barlow (1994), and derive a robust variance estimator based on the influence function. We consider the applicability of the variance estimator to all the proposed case-cohort estimators, and derive the influence function when known sampling probabilities in the estimators are replaced by observed sampling fractions. We discuss the modifications required when cases are missing covariate information. The missingness may occur by chance, and be completely at random; or may occur as part of the sampling design, and depend upon other observed covariates. We provide an adaptation of S-plus code that allows estimating influence function variances in the presence of such missing covariates. Using examples from our current case-cohort studies on esophageal and gastric cancer, we illustrate how our results our useful in solving design and analytic issues that arise in practice.  相似文献

Staggered nested experimental designs are the most popular class of unbalanced nested designs. Using a special notation which covers the particular structure of the staggered nested design, this paper systematically derives the canonical form for the arbitrary m-factors. Under the normality assumption for every random variable, a vector comprising m canonical variables from each experimental unit is normally independently and identically distributed. Every sum of squares used in the analysis of variance (ANOVA) can be expressed as the sum of squares of the corresponding canonical variables. Hence, general formulae for the expectations, variances and covariances of the mean squares are directly obtained from the canonical form. Applying the formulae, the explicit forms of the ANOVA estimators of the variance components and unbiased estimators of the ratios of the variance components are introduced in this paper. The formulae are easily applied to obtain the variances and covariances of any linear combinations of the mean squares, especially the ANOVA estimators of the variance components. These results are eff ectively applied for the standardization of measurement methods.  相似文献

The main focus of agricultural, ecological and environmental studies is to develop well designed, cost-effective and efficient sampling designs. Ranked set sampling (RSS) is one method that leads to accomplish such objectives by incorporating expert knowledge to its advantage. In this paper, we propose an efficient sampling scheme, named mixed RSS (MxRSS), for estimation of the population mean and median. The MxRSS scheme is a suitable mixture of both simple random sampling (SRS) and RSS schemes. The MxRSS scheme provides an unbiased estimator of the population mean, and its variance is always less than the variance of sample mean based on SRS. For both symmetric and asymmetric populations, the mean and median estimators based on SRS, partial RSS (PRSS) and MxRSS schemes are compared. It turns out that the mean and median estimates under MxRSS scheme are more precise than those based on SRS scheme. Moreover, when estimating the mean of symmetric and some asymmetric populations, the mean estimates under MxRSS scheme are found to be more efficient than the mean estimates with PRSS scheme. An application to real data is also provided to illustrate the implementation of the proposed sampling scheme.  相似文献
