Space filling designs are important for deterministic computer experiments. Even a single experiment can be very time consuming and can have many input parameters. Furthermore the underlying function generating the output is often nonlinear. Thus, the computer experiment has to be designed carefully. There exist many design criteria, which can be numerically optimized. Here, a method is developed, which does not need algorithmic optimization. A mesh of nearly regular simplices is constructed and the vertices of the simplices are used as potential design points. The extraction of a design from these meshes is very fast and easy to implement once the underlying mesh has been constructed. The extracted designs are highly competitive regarding the maximin design criterion and it is easy to extract designs for nonstandard design spaces.  相似文献

We study a new approach to determine optimal designs, exact or approximate, both for the uncorrelated case and when the responses may be correlated. A simple version of this method is based on transforming design points on a finite interval to proportions of the interval. Methods for determining optimal design weights can therefore be used to determine optimal values of these proportions. We explore the potential of this method in a range of examples encompassing linear and non-linear models, some assuming a correlation structure and some with more than one design variable.  相似文献

Exchange algorithms are widely used for optimizing design criteria and have proven to be highly effective. However, application of these algorithms can be computationally prohibitive for very large design problems, and in situations for which the design criterion is sufficiently complex so as to prevent efficient evaluation strategies. This paper reports on several modifications to exchange algorithms that lead to large reductions in the computational burden associated with optimizing any given design criterion. A small study indicates that these modifications do not significantly impact the quality of designs, while reductions in effort of over 90% can be achieved.  相似文献

Summary.  Designs for two-colour microarray experiments can be viewed as block designs with two treatments per block. Explicit formulae for the A- and D-criteria are given for the case that the number of blocks is equal to the number of treatments. These show that the A- and D-optimality criteria conflict badly if there are 10 or more treatments. A similar analysis shows that designs with one or two extra blocks perform very much better, but again there is a conflict between the two optimality criteria for moderately large numbers of treatments. It is shown that this problem can be avoided by slightly increasing the number of blocks. The two colours that are used in each block effectively turn the block design into a row–column design. There is no need to use a design in which every treatment has each colour equally often: rather, an efficient row–column design should be used. For odd replication, it is recommended that the row–column design should be based on a bipartite graph, and it is proved that the optimal such design corresponds to an optimal block design for half the number of treatments. Efficient row–column designs are given for replications 3–6. It is shown how to adapt them for experiments in which some treatments have replication only 2.  相似文献

Foldover techniques are used to reduce the confounding when some important effects (usually lower order effects) cannot be estimated independently. This article develops an efficient foldover mechanism for symmetric or asymmetric designs, whether regular or nonregular. In this paper, we take the uniformity criteria (UC) as the optimality measures to construct the optimal combined designs (initial design plus its corresponding foldover design) which have better capability of estimating lower order effects. The relationship between any initial design and its combined design is studied. A comparison study between the combined designs via different UC is provided. Equivalence between any combined design and its complementary combined design is investigated, which is a very useful constraint that reduce the search space. Using our results as benchmarks, we can implement a powerful algorithm for constructing optimal combined designs. Our work covers as well as gives results better than recent works of about 20 articles in the last few years as special cases. So this article is a good reference for constructing effective designs.  相似文献

Recently, many supersaturated designs have been proposed. A supersaturated design is a fractional factorial design in which the number of factors is greater than the number of experimental runs. The main thrust of the previous studies has been to generate more columns while avoiding large values of squared inner products among all design columns. These designs would be appropriate if the probability for each factor being active is uniformly distributed. When factors can be partitioned into two groups, namely, with high and low probabilities of each factor being active, it is desirable to maintain orthogonality among columns to be assigned to the factors in the high-probability group. We discuss a supersaturated design including an orthogonal base which is suitable for this common situation. Mathematical results on the existence of the supersaturated designs are shown, and the construction of supersaturated designs is presented. We next discuss some properties of the proposed supersaturated designs based on the squared inner products.  相似文献

Consider a k polynomial regression on a single real variable. If n uncorrelated observations are to be taken in a design with support on more than k+1 points, there is an approximate experiment, ν, with support on k+1 points and n observations such that both designs have the same information matrix for the model. A proof of this result is provided. A method to obtain the approximate design ν is given and illustrated by an example. In this paper, a new experimental design and gradient estimation procedure is presented for Phase I response surface optimization. The design is motivated by basic principles of differential calculus, which imply that if a point in Rn has been reached by exactly minimizing a function along a given direction, then the gradient of the function at that point must be orthogonal to the search direction followed. While exact line search is not required for the new design to be effective, this principle implies that the dimension of the gradient estimation procedure may often be reduced from n to n-1 variables, and the experimenter is able to concentrate experimental effort within the most productive region around the center of the design. The new design and gradient estimation procedures are presented, and bias and variance properties are derived. The effectiveness of the new design is shown to depend on the experimenter's ability to terminate line search within a near-stationary region of the line search function A simple heuristic is presented which indicates whether the new design should be used at a given experimental region.  相似文献

Classical regression analysis is usually performed in two steps. In the first step, an appropriate model is identified to describe the data generating process and in the second step, statistical inference is performed in the identified model. An intuitively appealing approach to the design of experiment for these different purposes are sequential strategies, which use parts of the sample for model identification and adapt the design according to the outcome of the identification steps. In this article, we investigate the finite sample properties of two sequential design strategies, which were recently proposed in the literature. A detailed comparison of sequential designs for model discrimination in several regression models is given by means of a simulation study. Some non-sequential designs are also included in the study.  相似文献

A D-optimal minimax design criterion is proposed to construct two-level fractional factorial designs, which can be used to estimate a linear model with main effects and some specified interactions. D-optimal minimax designs are robust against model misspecification and have small biases if the linear model contains more interaction terms. When the D-optimal minimax criterion is compared with the D-optimal design criterion, we find that the D-optimal design criterion is quite robust against model misspecification. Lower and upper bounds derived for the loss functions of optimal designs can be used to estimate the efficiencies of any design and evaluate the effectiveness of a search algorithm. Four algorithms to search for optimal designs for any run size are discussed and compared through several examples. An annealing algorithm and a sequential algorithm are particularly effective to search for optimal designs.  相似文献

In this paper, a Bayesian two-stage D–D optimal design for mixture experimental models under model uncertainty is developed. A Bayesian D-optimality criterion is used in the first stage to minimize the determinant of the posterior variances of the parameters. The second stage design is then generated according to an optimalityprocedure that collaborates with the improved model from the first stage data. The results show that a Bayesian two-stage D–D-optimal design for mixture experiments under model uncertainty is more efficient than both the Bayesian one-stage D-optimal design and the non-Bayesian one-stage D-optimal design in most situations. Furthermore, simulations are used to obtain a reasonable ratio of the sample sizes between the two stages.  相似文献

Optimal designs for logistic models generally require prior information about the values of the regression parameters. However, experimenters usually do not have full knowledge of these parameters. We propose a design that is D-optimal on a restricted design region. This design assigns an equal weight to design points that contain more information and ignores those design points that contain less information about the regression parameters. The design can be constructed in practice by means of the rank order of the outcome variances. A numerical study compares the proposed design with the D-optimal and completely balanced designs in terms of efficiency.  相似文献

A simple derivation of expected mean squares is given for the randomized (complete) block design, showing that “experimental error,” the error term for testing treatments, is comprised of three sources of variability: block by treatment interaction, within block plot-to-plot variability, and within experimental plot sampling variation. The associated design of a repeated measurements experiment is referred to as a repeated measurements design. This review covers some known results on repeated measurements designs. Emphasis is placed on the impact of optimal design theory. Some construction methods for these designs are presented. Two-level designs are useful to examine a large number of factors in an efficient manner. It is typically anticipated that only a few factors will be identified as important ones. The results can then be reanalyzed using a projection of the original design, projected into the space of the factors that matter. An interesting question is how many intrinsically different type of projections are possible from an initial given design. We examine this question here for the Plackett and Burman screening series with N= 12, 20 and 24 runs and projected dimensions k≤5. As a characterization criterion, we look at the number of repeat and mirror-image runs in the projections. The idea can be applied toany two-level design projected into fewer dimensions.  相似文献

A complete two-way cross-classification design is not practical in many settings. For example, in a toxicological study where 30 male rats are mated with 30 female rats and each mating outcome (successful or unsuccessful)is observed, time and resource considerations can make the use of the complete design prohibitively costly. Partially structured variations of this design are, therefore, of interest (e.g., the balanced disjoint rectangle design, the fully diagonal design, and the "S"-design). Methodology for analyzing binary data from such incomplete designs is illustrated with an example. This methodology, which is based on infinite population sampling arguments, allows the estimation of the mean response, among-row correlation coefficient, among-column correlation coefficient, and the within-cell correlation coefficient as well as their standard errors.  相似文献

In this article, row-column designs incorporating directional neighbor effects have been studied. A row-column design is said to be neighbor balanced if every treatment has all other treatments appearing as a neighbor a constant number of times. We considered here three different situations under row-column setup incorporating neighbor effects viz., row-column design with one-sided neighbor effect, two-sided neighbor effect, and four-sided neighbor effect. The information matrices for all the situations for estimating the direct and neighbor effects of treatments have been derived. Methods of constructing neighbor-balanced row-column designs have been developed and its characterization properties have been studied.  相似文献

Orthogonality is an important concept in block design. Necessary and sufficient condition for a connected block design to be orthogonal is well known. However, when a design is not orthogonal, it is not clear how much it deviates from orthogonality. In this paper, an attempt has been made to first define the measures of or indices to non orthogonality in block design and then to characterize designs possessing minimum non orthogonality indices. It is shown that a Balanced Incomplete Block Design (BIBD) and a Balanced Block Design (BBD), if exist, possess this property.  相似文献
