The variance of the error term in ordinary regression models and linear smoothers is usually estimated by adjusting the average squared residual for the trace of the smoothing matrix (the degrees of freedom of the predicted response). However, other types of variance estimators are needed when using monotonic regression (MR) models, which are particularly suitable for estimating response functions with pronounced thresholds. Here, we propose a simple bootstrap estimator to compensate for the over-fitting that occurs when MR models are estimated from empirical data. Furthermore, we show that, in the case of one or two predictors, the performance of this estimator can be enhanced by introducing adjustment factors that take into account the slope of the response function and characteristics of the distribution of the explanatory variables. Extensive simulations show that our estimators perform satisfactorily for a great variety of monotonic functions and error distributions.  相似文献

Let θ be a nonlinear function of the regression parameters and θ be its estimator based on the least-squares method. This paper studies the bootstrap estimators of the variance and bias of θ. The bootstrap estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically unbiased under some conditions. Asymptotic orders of the mean squared errors of the bootstrap estimators are also obtained. The bootstrap and the classical linearization method are compared in a simulation study. Discussions about when to use the bootstrap are given.  相似文献

Estimating equations based on marginal generalized linear models are useful for regression modelling of correlated data, but inference and testing require reliable estimates of standard errors. We introduce a class of variance estimators based on the weighted empirical variance of the estimating functions and show that an adaptive choice of weights allows reliable estimation both asymptotically and by simulation in finite samples. Connections with previous bootstrap and jackknife methods are explored. The effect of reliable variance estimation is illustrated in data on health effects of air pollution in King County, Washington.  相似文献

In this paper we consider two-stage estimators of parameters of a structural equation in a model with recursive exclusion restrictions on the instrumental variables equations. The estimations considered are simple OLS and GLS estimators after substitution of estimates of the systematic part of the IV equations for the endogenous variables. It is known in the literature that neither imposing the restrictions in the first stage nor ignoring them will in general be more efficient than the alternative. We introduce a class of mixed instrumental variables estimators (MIV) with these possibilities as special cases which yields an estimator which is not only more efficient than the two stage estimators considered in the literature but as efficient as an efficient system estimator like 3SLS.  相似文献

The method of target estimation developed by Cabrera and Fernholz [(1999). Target estimation for bias and mean square error reduction. The Annals of Statistics, 27(3), 1080–1104.] to reduce bias and variance is applied to logistic regression models of several parameters. The expectation functions of the maximum likelihood estimators for the coefficients in the logistic regression models of one and two parameters are analyzed and simulations are given to show a reduction in both bias and variability after targeting the maximum likelihood estimators. In addition to bias and variance reduction, it is found that targeting can also correct the skewness of the original statistic. An example based on real data is given to show the advantage of using target estimators for obtaining better confidence intervals of the corresponding parameters. The notion of the target median is also presented with some applications to the logistic models.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The estimation of variance function plays an extremely important role in statistical inference of the regression models. In this paper we propose a variance modelling method for constructing the variance structure via combining the exponential polynomial modelling method and the kernel smoothing technique. A simple estimation method for the parameters in heteroscedastic linear regression models is developed when the covariance matrix is unknown diagonal and the variance function is a positive function of the mean. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators are established under some mild assumptions. In particular, a simple version of bootstrap test is adapted to test misspecification of the variance function. Some Monte Carlo simulation studies are carried out to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed methods. Finally, the methodologies are illustrated by the ozone concentration dataset.  相似文献

In a polynomial regression with measurement errors in the covariate, the latter being supposed to be normally distributed, one has (at least) three ways to estimate the unknown regression parameters: one can apply ordinary least squares (OLS) to the model without regard to the measurement error or one can correct for the measurement error, either by correcting the estimating equation (ALS) or by correcting the mean and variance functions of the dependent variable, which is done by conditioning on the observable, error ridden, counter part of the covariate (SLS). While OLS is biased, the other two estimators are consistent. Their asymptotic covariance matrices and thus their relative efficiencies can be compared to each other, in particular for the case of a small measurement error variance. In this case, it appears that ALS and SLS become almost equally efficient, even when they differ noticeably from OLS.  相似文献

Abstract.  The purpose of this paper was to propose a procedure for testing the equality of several regression curves f i in non-parametric regression models when the noise is inhomogeneous and heteroscedastic, i.e. when the variances depend on the regressor and may vary between groups. The presented approach is very natural because it transfers the maximum likelihood statistic from a heteroscedastic one-way analysis of variance to the context of non-parametric regression. The maximum likelihood estimators will be replaced by kernel estimators of the regression functions f i . It is shown that the asymptotic distribution of the obtained test-statistic is nuisance parameter free. Asymptotic efficiency is compared with a test of Dette & Neumeyer [Annals of Statistics (2001) Vol. 29, 1361–1400] and it is shown that the new test is asymptotically uniformly more powerful. For practical purposes, a bootstrap variant is suggested. In a simulation study, level and power of this test will be briefly investigated and compared with other procedures. In summary, our theoretical findings are supported by this study. Finally, a crop yield experiment is reanalysed.  相似文献

Semiparametric accelerated failure time (AFT) models directly relate the expected failure times to covariates and are a useful alternative to models that work on the hazard function or the survival function. For case-cohort data, much less development has been done with AFT models. In addition to the missing covariates outside of the sub-cohort in controls, challenges from AFT model inferences with full cohort are retained. The regression parameter estimator is hard to compute because the most widely used rank-based estimating equations are not smooth. Further, its variance depends on the unspecified error distribution, and most methods rely on computationally intensive bootstrap to estimate it. We propose fast rank-based inference procedures for AFT models, applying recent methodological advances to the context of case-cohort data. Parameters are estimated with an induced smoothing approach that smooths the estimating functions and facilitates the numerical solution. Variance estimators are obtained through efficient resampling methods for nonsmooth estimating functions that avoids full blown bootstrap. Simulation studies suggest that the recommended procedure provides fast and valid inferences among several competing procedures. Application to a tumor study demonstrates the utility of the proposed method in routine data analysis.  相似文献

The results of analyzing experimental data using a parametric model may heavily depend on the chosen model for regression and variance functions, moreover also on a possibly underlying preliminary transformation of the variables. In this paper we propose and discuss a complex procedure which consists in a simultaneous selection of parametric regression and variance models from a relatively rich model class and of Box-Cox variable transformations by minimization of a cross-validation criterion. For this it is essential to introduce modifications of the standard cross-validation criterion adapted to each of the following objectives: 1. estimation of the unknown regression function, 2. prediction of future values of the response variable, 3. calibration or 4. estimation of some parameter with a certain meaning in the corresponding field of application. Our idea of a criterion oriented combination of procedures (which usually if applied, then in an independent or sequential way) is expected to lead to more accurate results. We show how the accuracy of the parameter estimators can be assessed by a “moment oriented bootstrap procedure", which is an essential modification of the “wild bootstrap” of Härdle and Mammen by use of more accurate variance estimates. This new procedure and its refinement by a bootstrap based pivot (“double bootstrap”) is also used for the construction of confidence, prediction and calibration intervals. Programs written in Splus which realize our strategy for nonlinear regression modelling and parameter estimation are described as well. The performance of the selected model is discussed, and the behaviour of the procedures is illustrated, e.g., by an application in radioimmunological assay.  相似文献

The authors consider general estimators for the mean and variance parameters in the random effect model and in the transformation model for data with multiple levels of variation. They show that these estimators have different distributions under the two models unless all the variables have Gaussian distributions. They investigate the asymptotic properties of bootstrap procedures designed for the two models. They also report simulation results and illustrate the bootstraps using data on red spruce trees.  相似文献

Fast and robust bootstrap   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper we review recent developments on a bootstrap method for robust estimators which is computationally faster and more resistant to outliers than the classical bootstrap. This fast and robust bootstrap method is, under reasonable regularity conditions, asymptotically consistent. We describe the method in general and then consider its application to perform inference based on robust estimators for the linear regression and multivariate location-scatter models. In particular, we study confidence and prediction intervals and tests of hypotheses for linear regression models, inference for location-scatter parameters and principal components, and classification error estimation for discriminant analysis.  相似文献

The problem of estimating standard errors for diagnostic accuracy measures might be challenging for many complicated models. We can address such a problem by using the Bootstrap methods to blunt its technical edge with resampled empirical distributions. We consider two cases where bootstrap methods can successfully improve our knowledge of the sampling variability of the diagnostic accuracy estimators. The first application is to make inference for the area under the ROC curve resulted from a functional logistic regression model which is a sophisticated modelling device to describe the relationship between a dichotomous response and multiple covariates. We consider using this regression method to model the predictive effects of multiple independent variables on the occurrence of a disease. The accuracy measures, such as the area under the ROC curve (AUC) are developed from the functional regression. Asymptotical results for the empirical estimators are provided to facilitate inferences. The second application is to test the difference of two weighted areas under the ROC curve (WAUC) from a paired two sample study. The correlation between the two WAUC complicates the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic. We then employ the bootstrap methods to gain satisfactory inference results. Simulations and examples are supplied in this article to confirm the merits of the bootstrap methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the estimation of both the parameters and the nonparametric link function in partially linear single‐index models for longitudinal data that may be unbalanced. In particular, a new three‐stage approach is proposed to estimate the nonparametric link function using marginal kernel regression and the parametric components with generalized estimating equations. The resulting estimators properly account for the within‐subject correlation. We show that the parameter estimators are asymptotically semiparametrically efficient. We also show that the asymptotic variance of the link function estimator is minimized when the working error covariance matrices are correctly specified. The new estimators are more efficient than estimators in the existing literature. These asymptotic results are obtained without assuming normality. The finite‐sample performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation studies. In addition, two real‐data examples are analyzed to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

There is a tendency for the true variability of feasible GLS estimators to be understated by asymptotic standard errors. For estimation of SUR models, this tendency becomes more severe in large equation systems when estimation of the error covariance matrix, C, becomes problematic. We explore a number of potential solutions involving the use of improved estimators for the disturbance covariance matrix and bootstrapping. In particular, Ullah and Racine (1992) have recently introduced a new class of estimators for SUR models that use nonparametric kernel density estimation techniques. The proposed estimators have the same structure as the feasible GLS estimator of Zellner (1962) differing only in the choice of estimator for C. Ullah and Racine (1992) prove that their nonparametric density estimator of C can be expressed as Zellner's original estimator plus a positive definite matrix that depends on the smoothing parameter chosen for the density estimation. It is this structure of the estimator that most interests us as it has the potential to be especially useful in large equation systems.

Atkinson and Wilson (1992) investigated the bias in the conventional and bootstrap estimators of coefficient standard errors in SUR models. They demonstrated that under certain conditions the former were superior, but they caution that neither estimator uniformly dominated and hence bootstrapping provides little improvement in the estimation of standard errors for the regression coefficients. Rilstone and Veal1 (1996) argue that an important qualification needs to be made to this somewhat negative conclusion. They demonstrated that bootstrapping can result in improvements in inferences if the procedures are applied to the t-ratios rather than to the standard errors. These issues are explored for the case of large equation systems and when bootstrapping is combined with improved covariance estimation.  相似文献

Liang and Zeger (1986) introduced a class of estimating equations that gives consistent estimates of regression parameters and of their asymptotic variances in the class of generalized linear models for cluster correlated data. When the independent variables or covariates in such models are subject to measurement errors, the parameter estimates obtained from these estimating equations are no longer consistent. To correct for the effect of measurement errors, an estimator with smaller asymptotic bias is constructed along the lines of Stefanski (1985), assuming that the measurement error variance is either known or estimable. The asymptotic distribution of the bias-corrected estimator and a consistent estimator of its asymptotic variance are also given. The special case of a binary logistic regression model is studied in detail. For this case, methods based on conditional scores and quasilikelihood are also extended to cluster correlated data. Results of a small simulation study on the performance of the proposed estimators and associated tests of hypotheses are reported.  相似文献

A flexible family of multivariate models, named multiple stable Tweedie (MST) models, is introduced and produces generalized variance functions which are products of powered components of the mean. These MST models are built from a fixed univariate stable Tweedie variable having a positive value domain, and the remaining random variables given the fixed one are also real independent Tweedie variables, with the same dispersion parameter equal to the fixed component. In this huge family of MST models, generalized variance estimators are explicitly pointed out by maximum likelihood method and, moreover, computably presented for the uniform minimum variance and unbiased approach. The second estimator is brought from modified Lévy measures of MST which lead to some solutions of particular Monge–Ampère equations.  相似文献

In the case where non-experimental data are available from an industrial process and a directed graph for how various factors affect a response variable is known based on a substantive understanding of the process, we consider a problem in which a control plan involving multiple treatment variables is conducted in order to bring a response variable close to a target value with variation reduction. Using statistical causal analysis with linear (recursive and non-recursive) structural equation models, we configure an optimal control plan involving multiple treatment variables through causal parameters. Based on the formulation, we clarify the causal mechanism for how the variance of a response variable changes when the control plan is conducted. The results enable us to evaluate the effect of a control plan on the variance of a response variable from non-experimental data and provide a new application of linear structural equation models to engineering science.  相似文献

Motivated by an application, we consider the statistical inference of varying-coefficient regression models in which some covariates are not observed, but ancillary variables are available to remit them. Due to the attenuation, the usual local polynomial estimation of the coefficient functions is not consistent. We propose a corrected local polynomial estimation for the unknown coefficient functions by calibrating the error-prone covariates. It is shown that the resulting estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. In addition, we develop a wild bootstrap test for the goodness of fit of models. Some simulations are conducted to demonstrate the finite sample performances of the proposed estimation and test procedures. An example of application on a real data from Duchenne muscular dystrophy study is also illustrated.  相似文献
