A general framework is presented for Bayesian inference of multivariate time series exhibiting long-range dependence. The series are modelled using a vector autoregressive fractionally integrated moving-average (VARFIMA) process, which can capture both short-term correlation structure and long-range dependence characteristics of the individual series, as well as interdependence and feedback relationships between the series. To facilitate a sampling-based Bayesian approach, the exact joint posterior density is derived for the parameters, in a form that is computationally simpler than direct evaluation of the likelihood, and a modified Gibbs sampling algorithm is used to generate samples from the complete conditional distribution associated with each parameter. The paper also shows how an approximate form of the joint posterior density may be used for long time series. The procedure is illustrated using sea surface temperatures measured at three locations along the central California coast. These series are believed to be interdependent due to similarities in local atmospheric conditions at the different locations, and previous studies have found that they exhibit ‘long memory’ when studied individually. The approach adopted here permits investigation of the effects on model estimation of the interdependence and feedback relationships between the series.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a hysteretic autoregressive model with GARCH specification and a skew Student's t-error distribution for financial time series. With an integrated hysteresis zone, this model allows both the conditional mean and conditional volatility switching in a regime to be delayed when the hysteresis variable lies in a hysteresis zone. We perform Bayesian estimation via an adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling scheme. The proposed Bayesian method allows simultaneous inferences for all unknown parameters, including threshold values and a delay parameter. To implement model selection, we propose a numerical approximation of the marginal likelihoods to posterior odds. The proposed methodology is illustrated using simulation studies and two major Asia stock basis series. We conduct a model comparison for variant hysteresis and threshold GARCH models based on the posterior odds ratios, finding strong evidence of the hysteretic effect and some asymmetric heavy-tailness. Versus multi-regime threshold GARCH models, this new collection of models is more suitable to describe real data sets. Finally, we employ Bayesian forecasting methods in a Value-at-Risk study of the return series.  相似文献

A Monte Carlo (MC) method is suggested for calculating an upper prediction limit for the mean of a future sample of small size N from a lognormal distribution. This is done by obtaining a Monte Carlo estimator of the limit utilizing the future sample generated from the Gibbs sampler. For the Gibbs sampler, a full conditional posterior predictive distribution of each observation in the future sample is derived. The MC method is straightforward to specify distributionally and to implement computationally, with output readily adapted for required inference summaries. In an example, practical application of the method is described.  相似文献

The main objective of this paper is to develop convenient Bayesian techniques for estimation and forecasting which can be used to analyze multiple (multivariate) autoregressive moving average processes. Based on the conditional likelihood function and the least squares estimates of the residuals, the marginal posterior distribution of the coefficients of the model is approximated by a matrix t distribution, the marginal posterior distribution of the precision matrix is approximated by a Wishart distribution, and the predictive distribution is approximated by a multivariate t distribution. Some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the idea of using the proposed techniques to analyze different types of multiple ARMA models.  相似文献

This paper considers a time series model with a piecewise linear conditional mean and a piecewise linear conditional variance which is a natural extension of Tong's threshold autoregressive model. The model has potential applications in modelling asymmetric behaviour in volatility in the financial market. Conditions for stationarity and ergodicity are derived. Asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator and two model diagnostic checking statistics are also presented. An illustrative example based on the Hong Kong Hang Seng index is also reported.  相似文献

A Bayesian approach to modelling binary data on a regular lattice is introduced. The method uses a hierarchical model where the observed data is the sign of a hidden conditional autoregressive Gaussian process. This approach essentially extends the familiar probit model to dependent data. Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations are used on real and simulated data to estimate the posterior distribution of the spatial dependency parameters and the method is shown to work well. The method can be straightforwardly extended to regression models.  相似文献

The marginal posterior probability density function (pdf) for the mean of a stationary pth order Gaussian autoregressive process is derived using the conditional likelihood function. While the posterior pdf provides a small sample analysis, the pdf is not well known and must be analyzed numerically. This is relatively easy since it is a function of only one variable. Two sets of examples are presented. The first set involves synthetic data generated by computer, and the second set deals with energy expenditure data on a bum patient.  相似文献

In this paper, an autoregressive time series model with conditional heteroscedasticity is considered, where both conditional mean and conditional variance function are modeled nonparametrically. Tests for the model assumption of independence of innovations from past time series values are suggested. Tests based on weighted L2‐distances of empirical characteristic functions are considered as well as a Cramér–von Mises‐type test. The asymptotic distributions under the null hypothesis of independence are derived, and the consistency against fixed alternatives is shown. A smooth autoregressive residual bootstrap procedure is suggested, and its performance is shown in a simulation study.  相似文献

The existing dynamic models for realized covariance matrices do not account for an asymmetry with respect to price directions. We modify the recently proposed conditional autoregressive Wishart (CAW) model to allow for the leverage effect. In the conditional threshold autoregressive Wishart (CTAW) model and its variations the parameters governing each asset's volatility and covolatility dynamics are subject to switches that depend on signs of previous asset returns or previous market returns. We evaluate the predictive ability of the CTAW model and its restricted and extended specifications from both statistical and economic points of view. We find strong evidence that many CTAW specifications have a better in-sample fit and tend to have a better out-of-sample predictive ability than the original CAW model and its modifications.  相似文献

This paper examines local influence assessment in generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscesdasticity models with Gaussian and Student-t errors, where influence is examined via the likelihood displacement. The analysis of local influence is discussed under three perturbation schemes: data perturbation, innovative model perturbation and additive model perturbation. For each case, expressions for slope and curvature diagnostics are derived. Monte Carlo experiments are presented to determine the threshold values for locating influential observations. The empirical study of daily returns of the New York Stock Exchange composite index shows that local influence analysis is a useful technique for detecting influential observations; most of the observations detected as influential are associated with historical shocks in the market. Finally, based on this empirical study and the analysis of simulated data, some advice is given on how to use the discussed methodology.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a first-order random coefficient integer-valued threshold autoregressive process, which is based on binomial thinning. Basic probabilistic and statistical properties of this model are discussed. Conditional least squares and conditional maximum likelihood estimators are derived for both the cases that the threshold variable is known or not. The asymptotic properties of the estimators are established. Moreover, forecasting problem is addressed. Finally, some numerical results of the estimates and a real data example are presented.  相似文献

Extending previous work on hedge fund return predictability, this paper introduces the idea of modelling the conditional distribution of hedge fund returns using Student's t full-factor multivariate GARCH models. This class of models takes into account the stylized facts of hedge fund return series, that is, heteroskedasticity, fat tails and deviations from normality. For the proposed class of multivariate predictive regression models, we derive analytic expressions for the score and the Hessian matrix, which can be used within classical and Bayesian inferential procedures to estimate the model parameters, as well as to compare different predictive regression models. We propose a Bayesian approach to model comparison which provides posterior probabilities for various predictive models that can be used for model averaging. Our empirical application indicates that accounting for fat tails and time-varying covariances/correlations provides a more appropriate modelling approach of the underlying dynamics of financial series and improves our ability to predict hedge fund returns.  相似文献

New techniques for the analysis of stochastic volatility models in which the logarithm of conditional variance follows an autoregressive model are developed. A cyclic Metropolis algorithm is used to construct a Markov-chain simulation tool. Simulations from this Markov chain converge in distribution to draws from the posterior distribution enabling exact finite-sample inference. The exact solution to the filtering/smoothing problem of inferring about the unobserved variance states is a by-product of our Markov-chain method. In addition, multistep-ahead predictive densities can be constructed that reflect both inherent model variability and parameter uncertainty. We illustrate our method by analyzing both daily and weekly data on stock returns and exchange rates. Sampling experiments are conducted to compare the performance of Bayes estimators to method of moments and quasi-maximum likelihood estimators proposed in the literature. In both parameter estimation and filtering, the Bayes estimators outperform these other approaches.  相似文献

We generalize the Gaussian mixture transition distribution (GMTD) model introduced by Le and co-workers to the mixture autoregressive (MAR) model for the modelling of non-linear time series. The models consist of a mixture of K stationary or non-stationary AR components. The advantages of the MAR model over the GMTD model include a more full range of shape changing predictive distributions and the ability to handle cycles and conditional heteroscedasticity in the time series. The stationarity conditions and autocorrelation function are derived. The estimation is easily done via a simple EM algorithm and the model selection problem is addressed. The shape changing feature of the conditional distributions makes these models capable of modelling time series with multimodal conditional distributions and with heteroscedasticity. The models are applied to two real data sets and compared with other competing models. The MAR models appear to capture features of the data better than other competing models do.  相似文献

The main contribution of this paper is a proof of the asymptotic validity of the application of the bootstrap to AR(∞) processes with unmodelled conditional heteroskedasticity. We first derive the asymptotic properties of the least-squares estimator of the autoregressive sieve parameters when the data are generated by a stationary linear process with martingale difference errors that are possibly subject to conditional heteroskedasticity of unknown form. These results are then used in establishing that a suitably constructed bootstrap estimator will have the same limit distribution as the least-squares estimator. Our results provide theoretical justification for the use of either the conventional asymptotic approximation based on robust standard errors or the bootstrap approximation of the distribution of autoregressive parameters. A simulation study suggests that the bootstrap approach tends to be more accurate in small samples.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new generalized alpha-skew-T (GAST) distribution for generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models in modelling daily Value-at-Risk (VaR). Some mathematical properties of the proposed distribution are derived including density function, moments and stochastic representation. The maximum likelihood estimation method is discussed to estimate parameters via a simulation study. Then, the real data application on S&P-500 index is performed to investigate the performance of GARCH models specified under GAST innovation distribution with respect to normal, Student's-t and Skew-T models in terms of the VaR accuracy. Backtesting methodology is used to compare the out-of-sample performance of the VaR models. The results show that GARCH models with GAST innovation distribution outperforms among others and generates the most conservative VaR forecasts for all confidence levels and for both long and short positions.  相似文献

The Box–Jenkins methodology for modeling and forecasting from univariate time series models has long been considered a standard to which other forecasting techniques have been compared. To a Bayesian statistician, however, the method lacks an important facet—a provision for modeling uncertainty about parameter estimates. We present a technique called sampling the future for including this feature in both the estimation and forecasting stages. Although it is relatively easy to use Bayesian methods to estimate the parameters in an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, there are severe difficulties in producing forecasts from such a model. The multiperiod predictive density does not have a convenient closed form, so approximations are needed. In this article, exact Bayesian forecasting is approximated by simulating the joint predictive distribution. First, parameter sets are randomly generated from the joint posterior distribution. These are then used to simulate future paths of the time series. This bundle of many possible realizations is used to project the future in several ways. Highest probability forecast regions are formed and portrayed with computer graphics. The predictive density's shape is explored. Finally, we discuss a method that allows the analyst to subjectively modify the posterior distribution on the parameters and produce alternate forecasts.  相似文献

Bayesian analysis of predictive values and related parameters of a diagnostic test are derived. In one case, the estimates are conditional on values of the prevalence of the disease; in the second case, the corresponding unconditional estimates are presented. Small-sample point estimates, posterior moments, and credibility intervals for all related parameters are obtained. Numerical methods of solution are also discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A bivariate integer-valued autoregressive time series model is presented. The model structure is based on binomial thinning. The unconditional and conditional first and second moments are considered. Correlation structure of marginal processes is shown to be analogous to the ARMA(2, 1) model. Some estimation methods such as the Yule–Walker and conditional least squares are considered and the asymptotic distributions of the obtained estimators are derived. Comparison between bivariate model with binomial thinning and bivariate model with negative binomial thinning is given.  相似文献
