The omission of important variables is a well‐known model specification issue in regression analysis and mixed linear models. The author considers longitudinal data models that are special cases of the mixed linear models; in particular, they are linear models of repeated observations on a subject. Models of omitted variables have origins in both the econometrics and biostatistics literatures. The author describes regression coefficient estimators that are robust to and that provide the basis for detecting the influence of certain types of omitted variables. New robust estimators and omitted variable tests are introduced and illustrated with a case study that investigates the determinants of tax liability.

A number of articles have discussed the way lower order polynomial and interaction terms should be handled in linear regression models. Only if all lower order terms are included in the model will the regression model be invariant with respect to coding transformations of the variables. If lower order terms are omitted, the regression model will not be well formulated. In this paper, we extend this work to examine the implications of the ordering of variables in the linear mixed-effects model. We demonstrate how linear transformations of the variables affect the model and tests of significance of fixed effects in the model. We show how the transformations modify the random effects in the model, as well as their covariance matrix and the value of the restricted log-likelihood. We suggest a variable selection strategy for the linear mixed-effects model.

This paper states and proves the asymptotic properties of constrained generalized least squares estimators in the analysis of covariance structures in multiple populations with arbitrary distributions of variables. Asymptotic chi-square tests are also presented to permit evaluation of the goodness-of-fit of models. The currently known results for multiple population models based on variables that are multivariate normally distributed are obtained as a special case.

Usually in latent class (LC) analysis, external predictors are taken to be cluster conditional probability predictors (LC models with external predictors), and/or score conditional probability predictors (LC regression models). In such cases, their distribution is not of interest. Class-specific distribution is of interest in the distal outcome model, when the distribution of the external variables is assumed to depend on LC membership. In this paper, we consider a more general formulation, that embeds both the LC regression and the distal outcome models, as is typically done in cluster-weighted modelling. This allows us to investigate (1) whether the distribution of the external variables differs across classes, (2) whether there are significant direct effects of the external variables on the indicators, by modelling jointly the relationship between the external and the latent variables. We show the advantages of the proposed modelling approach through a set of artificial examples, an extensive simulation study and an empirical application about psychological contracts among employees and employers in Belgium and the Netherlands.

This paper considers the search for locally and maximin optimal designs for multi-factor nonlinear models from optimal designs for sub-models of a lower dimension. In particular, sufficient conditions are given so that maximin D-optimal designs for additive multi-factor nonlinear models can be built from maximin D-optimal designs for their sub-models with a single factor. Some examples of application are models involving exponential decay in several variables.

We propose a method for specifying the distribution of random effects included in a model for cluster data. The class of models we consider includes mixed models and frailty models whose random effects and explanatory variables are constant within clusters. The method is based on cluster residuals obtained by assuming that the random effects are equal between clusters. We exhibit an asymptotic relationship between the cluster residuals and variations of the random effects as the number of observations increases and the variance of the random effects decreases. The asymptotic relationship is used to specify the random-effects distribution. The method is applied to a frailty model and a model used to describe the spread of plant diseases.

In this article, a general approach to latent variable models based on an underlying generalized linear model (GLM) with factor analysis observation process is introduced. We call these models Generalized Linear Factor Models (GLFM). The observations are produced from a general model framework that involves observed and latent variables that are assumed to be distributed in the exponential family. More specifically, we concentrate on situations where the observed variables are both discretely measured (e.g., binomial, Poisson) and continuously distributed (e.g., gamma). The common latent factors are assumed to be independent with a standard multivariate normal distribution. Practical details of training such models with a new local expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, which can be considered as a generalized EM-type algorithm, are also discussed. In conjunction with an approximated version of the Fisher score algorithm (FSA), we show how to calculate maximum likelihood estimates of the model parameters, and to yield inferences about the unobservable path of the common factors. The methodology is illustrated by an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study and the results show promising performance.

The so-called “fixed effects” approach to the estimation of panel data models suffers from the limitation that it is not possible to estimate the coefficients on explanatory variables that are time-invariant. This is in contrast to a “random effects” approach, which achieves this by making much stronger assumptions on the relationship between the explanatory variables and the individual-specific effect. In a linear model, it is possible to obtain the best of both worlds by making random effects-type assumptions on the time-invariant explanatory variables while maintaining the flexibility of a fixed effects approach when it comes to the time-varying covariates. This article attempts to do the same for some popular nonlinear models.

Linear models are often used to quantify differentials between protected and unprotected groups on variables such as salary. Some consequences of model misspecification are examined. In addition, the effects of preferential selection on linear analysis results are studied.

This paper proposes a variable selection method for detecting abnormal items based on the T2 test when the observations on abnormal items are available. Based on the unbiased estimates of the powers for all subsets of variables, the variable selection method selects the subset of variables that maximizes the power estimate. Since more than one subsets of variables maximize the power estimate frequently, the averaged p-value of the rejected items is used as a second criterion. Although the performance of the method depends on the sample size for the abnormal items and the true power values for all subsets of variables, numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Since normal and abnormal items are simulated using one-factor and two-factor models, basic properties of the power functions for the models are investigated.

Multi-state Models in Epidemiology
I first discuss the main assumptions which can be made for multi-state models: the time-homogeneity and semi-Markov assumptions, the problem of choice of the time scale, the assumption of homogeneity of the population and also assumptions about the way the observations are incomplete, leading to truncation and censoring. The influence of covariates and different durations and time-dependent variables are synthesized using explanatory processes, and a general additive model for transition intensities presented. Different inference approaches, including penalized likelihood, are considered. Finally three examples of application in epidemiology are presented and some references to other works are given.

In this article, we introduce a class of self-exciting threshold integer-valued autoregressive models driven by independent Poisson-distributed random variables. Basic probabilistic and statistical properties of this class of models are discussed. Moreover, parameter estimation is also addressed. Specifically, the methods of estimation under analysis are the least squares-type and likelihood-based ones. Their performance is compared through a simulation study.

A bank offering unsecured personal loans may be interested in several related outcome variables, including defaulting on the repayments, early repayment or failing to take up an offered loan. Current predictive models used by banks typically consider such variables individually. However, the fact that they are related to each other, and to many interrelated potential predictor variables, suggests that graphical models may provide an attractive alternative solution. We developed such a model for a data set of 15 variables measured on a set of 14 000 applications for unsecured personal loans. The resulting global model of behaviour enabled us to identify several previously unsuspected relationships of considerable interest to the bank. For example, we discovered important but obscure relationships between taking out insurance, prior delinquency with a credit card and delinquency with the loan.

The paper presents an extension of a new class of multivariate latent growth models (Bianconcini and Cagnone, 2012) to allow for covariate effects on manifest, latent variables and random effects. The new class of models combines: (i) multivariate latent curves that describe the temporal behavior of the responses, and (ii) a factor model that specifies the relationship between manifest and latent variables. Based on the Generalized Linear and Latent Variable Model framework (Bartholomew and Knott, 1999), the response variables are assumed to follow different distributions of the exponential family, with item-specific linear predictors depending on both latent variables and measurement errors. A full maximum likelihood method is used to estimate all the model parameters simultaneously. Data coming from the Data WareHouse of the University of Bologna are used to illustrate the methodology.

We consider varying coefficient models, which are an extension of the classical linear regression models in the sense that the regression coefficients are replaced by functions in certain variables (for example, time), the covariates are also allowed to depend on other variables. Varying coefficient models are popular in longitudinal data and panel data studies, and have been applied in fields such as finance and health sciences. We consider longitudinal data and estimate the coefficient functions by the flexible B-spline technique. An important question in a varying coefficient model is whether an estimated coefficient function is statistically different from a constant (or zero). We develop testing procedures based on the estimated B-spline coefficients by making use of nice properties of a B-spline basis. Our method allows longitudinal data where repeated measurements for an individual can be correlated. We obtain the asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic. The power of the proposed testing procedures are illustrated on simulated data where we highlight the importance of including the correlation structure of the response variable and on real data.

This note considers a method for estimating regression parameters from the data containing measurement errors using some natural estimates of the unobserved explanatory variables. It is shown that the resulting estimator is consistent not only in the usual linear regression model but also in the probit model and regression models with censoship or truncation. However, it fails to be consistent in nonlinear regression models except for special cases.
