A one-sample asymptotically normal test statistic Is derived for testing the hypothesis that the coefficient of variation of a normal population is equal to a specified value. Based on this derivation, an asymptotically noraml two-sample test statistic and an asymptotically chi-square k-sample test statistic are derived for testing the hypothesis that the coefficients of variation of k ≥2 normal populations are equal. The two and k-sample test statistics allow for unequal sample sizes. Results of a simulation study which evaluate the size and power of the test statistics and compare the test statistics to earlier ones developed by McKay (1932) and Bennett (1976) are presented.  相似文献

In the spirit of the recent work of Ahmad (1996) this paper introduces another class of Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test statistics. The test statistic compares the r th and s th powers of the tail probabilities of the underlying probability distributions. The choice of r + s = 4 improves the Pitman efficiency for uniform, exponential, lognormal and normal distributions and keeps the same efficiency as the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon test for logistic and double exponential distributions. The two-sample test is modified for the one-sample problem with symmetric underlying distribution.  相似文献

Given a probability measure on the unit square, the measure of the region under an empirical P – P -plot defines a two-sample rank statistic. Instances include trimmed and censored versions of the Mann–Whitney–Wilcoxon statistic and a class of statistics with applications in the analysis of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. A large sample distribution for such a statistic is obtained, which is valid under sampling from general populations. Explicit results are presented for comparing arbitrary quantile segments of two populations. The results are not restricted to continuous data and incorporate adjustments for tied values in the discrete case. A multivariate version of the large sample distribution extends the class of tractable statistics in ROC analysis and facilitates the use of methods based on partial areas when the data are discrete.  相似文献

Severe departures from normality occur frequently for null distributions of statistics associated with applications of mulLi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) for either small or large finite populations. This paper describes the commonly encountered situation associated with asymptotic non-normality for null distributions of MRPP statistics which does not depend on the underlying multivariate distribution. In addition, this paper establishes the existence of a non-degenerate underlying distribution for which the null distributions of MRPP statistics are asymptotically non-normal for essentially all size structure configurations. It is known that MRPP statistics are symmetric versions of a broader class of statistics, most of which are asymmetric. Because of the non-normality associated with null distributions of MRPP statistics, this paper includes necessary results for inferences based on the exact first three moments of anv statistic in this broader class (analogous to existing results for MRPP statistics).  相似文献

Bhattacharyya and Kioiz (1966) propose two multivariate nonparametric tests for monotone trend, one involving coordinate-wise Mann statistics and the other, coordinate-wise Spearman statistics. Dietz and Killeen (1981) propose a different test statistic based on coordinate-wise Mann statistics. The Pitman asymptotic relative efficiency of all three tests with respect to a normal theory competitor equals the cube root of the efficiency of a multivariate signed rank test with respect to Hotelling's T2. In this article, the small sample power of the nonparametric tests, the normal theory test, and a Bonferroni approach involving coordinate-wise univariate Mann or Spearman tests is examined in a simulation study. The Mann statistic of Dietz and Killeen and the Spearman statistic of Bhattacharyya and Klotz are found to perform well under both null and alternative hypotheses  相似文献

The asymptotic normality of the Cramer-von Mises one-sample test statistic and one of its variants under an alternative cdf is demonstrated. The derivation herein is unique in that it does not require knowledge of the theory of weak convergence of probability measures defined on metrized function spaces, and thus is accessible to a broader class of students and practitioners.  相似文献

Two different two-sample tests for dispersion differences based on placement statistics are proposed. The means and variances of the test statistics are derived, and asymptotic normality is established for both. Variants of the proposed tests based on reversing the X and Y labels in the test statistic calculations are shown to have different small-sample properties; for both pairs of tests, one member of the pair will be resolving, the other nonresolving. The proposed tests are similar in spirit to the dispersion tests of both Mood and Hollander; comparative simulation results for these four tests are given. For small sample sizes, the powers of the proposed tests are approximately equal to the powers of the tests of both Mood and Hollander for samples from the normal, Cauchy and exponential distributions. The one-sample limiting distributions are also provided, yielding useful approximations to the exact tests when one sample is much larger than the other. A bootstrap test may alternatively be performed. The proposed test statistics may be used with lightly censored data by substituting Kaplan-Meier estimates for the empirical distribution functions.  相似文献

The surveillance of multivariate processes has received growing attention during the last decade. Several generalizations of well-known methods such as Shewhart, CUSUM and EWMA charts have been proposed. Many of these multivariate procedures are based on a univariate summarized statistic of the multivariate observations, usually the likelihood ratio statistic. In this paper we consider the surveillance of multivariate observation processes for a shift between two fully specified alternatives. The effect of the dimension reduction using likelihood ratio statistics are discussed in the context of sufficiency properties. Also, an example of the loss of efficiency when not using the univariate sufficient statistic is given. Furthermore, a likelihood ratio method, the LR method, for constructing surveillance procedures is suggested for multivariate surveillance situations. It is shown to produce univariate surveillance procedures based on the sufficient likelihood ratios. As the LR procedure has several optimality properties in the univariate, it is also used here as a benchmark for comparisons between multivariate surveillance procedures  相似文献

A multivariate two-sample testing problem is one of the most important topics in nonparametric statistics. One of the multivariate two-sample testing problems based on the Jure?ková–Kalina ranks of distance is discussed in this article. Further, a multivariate Wilcoxon-type test is proposed for testing the equality of two continuous distribution functions. Simulations are used to investigate the power of this test for the two-sided alternative with various population distributions. The results show that the proposed test statistic is more suitable than various existing statistics for testing a shift in the locationt and location-scale parameters.  相似文献

In this paper we propose test statistics for a general hypothesis concerning the adequacy of multivariate random-effects covariance structures in a multivariate growth curve model with differing numbers of random effects (Lange, N., N.M. Laird, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 84 (1989) 241–247). Since the exact likelihood ratio (LR) statistic for the hypothesis is complicated, it is suggested to use a modified LR statistic. An asymptotic expansion of the null distribution of the statistic is obtained. The exact LR statistic is also discussed.  相似文献

A new characterization of the Pareto distribution is proposed, and new goodness-of-fit tests based on it are constructed. Test statistics are functionals of U-empirical processes. The first of these statistics is of integral type, it is similar to the classical statistics \(\omega _n^1\). The second one is a Kolmogorov type statistic. We show that the kernels of our statistics are non-degenerate. The limiting distribution and large deviations asymptotics of the new statistics under null hypothesis are described. Their local Bahadur efficiency for parametric alternatives is calculated. This type of efficiency is mostly appropriate for the solution of our problem since the Kolmogorov type statistic is not asymptotically normal, and the Pitman approach is not applicable to this statistic. For the second statistic we evaluate the critical values by using Monte-Carlo methods. Also conditions of local optimality of new statistics in the sense of Bahadur are discussed and examples of such special alternatives are given. For small sample size we compare the power of those tests with some common goodness-of-fit tests.  相似文献

A class of Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramér-von Mises type statistics for testing symmetry about an unknown value is described. These statistics are not distribution-free, however, and, indeed, are not readily amenable to calculation. A linear rank statistic analog of the first component of the Cramér-von Mises type statistic is investigated. Asymptotic non-null properties of these procedures in the normal case are studied, and an efficiency comparison of the Cramér-vonMises statistic, the linear rank statistic analog, the modified Wil-coxon statistic, and the likelihood ratio test is reported.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The one-sample Wilcoxon signed rank test was originally designed to test for a specified median, under the assumption that the distribution is symmetric, but it can also serve as a test for symmetry if the median is known. In this article we derive the Wilcoxon statistic as the first component of Pearson's X 2 statistic for independence in a particularly constructed contingency table. The second and third components are new test statistics for symmetry. In the second part of the article, the Wilcoxon test is extended so that symmetry around the median and symmetry in the tails can be examined seperately. A trimming proportion is used to split the observations in the tails from those around the median. We further extend the method so that no arbitrary choice for the trimming proportion has to be made. Finally, the new tests are compared to other tests for symmetry in a simulation study. It is concluded that our tests often have substantially greater powers than most other tests.  相似文献

The ideas of influence are now well known, and influence functions have been investigated widely, especially in the contexts of regression analysis and multivariate analysis. However, there seems to be no published account of the influence of single observations on simple one-sample tests for means and variance. The usual test statistics, based on normality assumptions, for a mean when the variance is known, and for the variance, display an obvious behaviour when an extra observation is added to a data set. However, the t-test for a single mean has a more interesting, and less predictable, pattern of behaviour. The t-statistic also demonstrates how the theoretical influence function can sometimes be misleading when used to estimate the effect of inserting or deleting a single observation.  相似文献

A class of “optimal”U-statistics type nonparametric test statistics is proposed for the one-sample location problem by considering a kernel depending on a constant a and all possible (distinct) subsamples of size two from a sample of n independent and identically distributed observations. The “optimal” choice of a is determined by the underlying distribution. The proposed class includes the Sign and the modified Wilcoxon signed-rank statistics as special cases. It is shown that any “optimal” member of the class performs better in terms of Pitman efficiency relative to the Sign and Wilcoxon-signed rank statistics. The effect of deviation of chosen a from the “optimal” a on Pitman efficiency is also examined. A Hodges-Lehmann type point estimator of the location parameter corresponding to the proposed “optimal” test-statistics is also defined and studied in this paper.  相似文献

The present study suggests the use of the normalized Johnson transformation trimmed t statistic in the one-sample case when the assumption of normality is violated. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation, and was compared with the conventional Student t statistic, the trimmed t statistic and the normalized Johnson's transformation untrimmed t statistic respectively. The simulated results indicate that the proposed method can control type I error very well and that its power is greater than the other competitors for various conditions of non-normality. The method can be easily computer programmed and provides an alternative for the conventional t test.  相似文献

In many situations, we want to verify the existence of a relationship between multivariate time series. In this paper, we generalize the procedure developed by Haugh (1976) for univariate time series in order to test the hypothesis of noncorrelation between two multivariate stationary ARMA series. The test statistics are based on residual cross-correlation matrices. Under the null hypothesis of noncorrelation, we show that an arbitrary vector of residual cross-correlations asymptotically follows the same distribution as the corresponding vector of cross-correlations between the two innovation series. From this result, it follows that the test statistics considered are asymptotically distributed as chi-square random variables. Two test procedures are described. The first one is based on the residual cross-correlation matrix at a particular lag, whilst the second one is based on a portmanteau type statistic that generalizes Haugh's statistic. We also discuss how the procedures for testing noncorrelation can be adapted to determine the directions of causality in the sense of Granger (1969) between the two series. An advantage of the proposed procedures is that their application does not require the estimation of a global model for the two series. The finite-sample properties of the statistics introduced were studied by simulation under the null hypothesis. It led to modified statistics whose upper quantiles are much better approximated by those of the corresponding chi-square distribution. Finally, the procedures developed are applied to two different sets of economic data.  相似文献

Exploratory methods for determining appropriate lagged vsrlables in a vector nonlinear time series model are investigated. The first is a multivariate extension of the R statistic considered by Granger and Lin (1994), which is based on an estimate of the mutual information criterion. The second method uses Kendall's ρ and partial ρ statistics for lag determination. The methods provide nonlinear analogues of the autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation matrices for a vector time series. Simulation studies indicate that the R statistic reliabiy identifies appropriate lagged nonlinear moving average terms in a vector time series, while Kendall's ρ and partial ρ statistics have some power in identifying appropirate lagged nonlinear moving average and autoregressive terms, respectively, when the nonlinear relationship between lagged variables is monotonic. For illustration, the methods are applied to set of annual temperature and tree ring measurements at Campito Mountain In California.  相似文献

We consider the issue of performing accurate small-sample likelihood-based inference in beta regression models, which are useful for modelling continuous proportions that are affected by independent variables. We derive small-sample adjustments to the likelihood ratio statistic in this class of models. The adjusted statistics can be easily implemented from standard statistical software. We present Monte Carlo simulations showing that inference based on the adjusted statistics we propose is much more reliable than that based on the usual likelihood ratio statistic. A real data example is presented.  相似文献
