Revisions of the early GNP estimates may contain elements of measurement errors as well as forecast errors. These types of error behave differently but need to satisfy a common set of criteria for well-behavedness. This article tests these criteria for U.S. GNP revisions. The tests are similar to tests of rationality and are based on the generalized method of moments estimator. The flash, 15-day, and 45-day estimates are found to be ill behaved, but the 75-day estimate satisfies the criteria for well-behavedness.  相似文献

Calibration in macroeconomics involves choosing fre parameters by matching certain moments of simulted models with those of data. We formally examine this method by treating the process of calibration as an econometric estimator. A numerical version of the Mehra-Prescott (1985) economy is the setting for an evaluation of calibration estimators via Monte Carlo methods. While these estimators sometimes have reasonable finite-sample properties they are not robust to mistakes in setting non-free parameters. In contrast, generalized method-of-moments (GMM) estimators have satisfactory finite-sample characteristics, quick convergence, and informational requirements less stringent than those of calibration estimators. In dynamic equilibrium models in which GMM is infeasible we offer some suggestions for improving estimates based on calibration methodology.  相似文献

This paper proposes two methods of estimation for the parameters in a Poisson-exponential model. The proposed methods combine the method of moments with a regression method based on the empirical moment generating function. One of the methods is an adaptation of the mixed-moments procedure of Koutrouvelis & Canavos (1999). The asymptotic distribution of the estimator obtained with this method is derived. Finite-sample comparisons are made with the maximum likelihood estimator and the method of moments. The paper concludes with an exploratory-type analysis of real data based on the empirical moment generating function.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a bias corrected estimate of the regression coefficient for the generalized probit regression model when the covariates are subject to measurement error and the responses are subject to interval censoring. The main improvement of our method is that it reduces most of the bias that the naive estimates have. The great advantage of our method is that it is baseline and censoring distribution free, in a sense that the investigator does not need to calculate the baseline or the censoring distribution to obtain the estimator of the regression coefficient, an important property of Cox regression model. A sandwich estimator for the variance is also proposed. Our procedure can be generalized to general measurement error distribution as long as the first four moments of the measurement error are known. The results of extensive simulations show that our approach is very effective in eliminating the bias when the measurement error is not too large relative to the error term of the regression model.  相似文献

The generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) has been widely used to model exceedances over a threshold. This article generalizes the method of generalized probability weighted moments, and applies this method to estimate the parameters of GPD. The estimator is computationally easy. Some asymptotic results of this method are provided. Two simulations are carried out to investigate the behavior of this method and to compare them with other methods suggested in the literature. The simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than some other methods. Finally, this method is applied to analyze a real-life data.  相似文献

This article establishes the almost sure convergence and asymptotic normality of levels and differenced quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimators of dynamic panel data models. The QML estimators are robust with respect to initial conditions, conditional and time-series heteroskedasticity, and misspecification of the log-likelihood. The article also provides an ECME algorithm for calculating levels QML estimates. Finally, it compares the finite-sample performance of levels and differenced QML estimators, the differenced generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, and the system GMM estimator. The QML estimators usually have smaller— typically substantially smaller—bias and root mean squared errors than the panel data GMM estimators.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to examine small sample properties of the operational almost unbiased generalized ridge estimator (E) . The exact first two moments of theAUGRE are derived. It is shown that although the reduction of the bias of the AUGRE is substantial, the AUGRE is rather inefficient than the generalized ridge estimator without the bias correction in a wide range of a noncen-trality parameter in terms of the mean square error.  相似文献

Multivariate Logit models are convenient to describe multivariate correlated binary choices as they provide closed-form likelihood functions. However, the computation time required for calculating choice probabilities increases exponentially with the number of choices, which makes maximum likelihood-based estimation infeasible when many choices are considered. To solve this, we propose three novel estimation methods: (i) stratified importance sampling, (ii) composite conditional likelihood (CCL), and (iii) generalized method of moments, which yield consistent estimates and still have similar small-sample bias to maximum likelihood. Our simulation study shows that computation times for CCL are much smaller and that its efficiency loss is small.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We propose a new estimator for the spot covariance matrix of a multi-dimensional continuous semimartingale log asset price process, which is subject to noise and nonsynchronous observations. The estimator is constructed based on a local average of block-wise parametric spectral covariance estimates. The latter originate from a local method of moments (LMM), which recently has been introduced by Bibinger et al.. We prove consistency and a point-wise stable central limit theorem for the proposed spot covariance estimator in a very general setup with stochastic volatility, leverage effects, and general noise distributions. Moreover, we extend the LMM estimator to be robust against autocorrelated noise and propose a method to adaptively infer the autocorrelations from the data. Based on simulations we provide empirical guidance on the effective implementation of the estimator and apply it to high-frequency data of a cross-section of Nasdaq blue chip stocks. Employing the estimator to estimate spot covariances, correlations, and volatilities in normal but also unusual periods yields novel insights into intraday covariance and correlation dynamics. We show that intraday (co-)variations (i) follow underlying periodicity patterns, (ii) reveal substantial intraday variability associated with (co-)variation risk, and (iii) can increase strongly and nearly instantaneously if new information arrives. LIKELIHOOD MOMENT ESTIMATION FOR THE GENERALIZED PARETO DISTRIBUTION   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Traditional methods for estimating parameters in the generalized Pareto distribution have theoretical and computational defects. The moment estimator and the probability‐weighted moment estimator have low asymptotic efficiencies. They may not exist or may give nonsensical estimates. The maximum likelihood estimator, which sometimes does not exist, is asymptotically efficient, but its computation is complex and has convergence problems. The likelihood moment estimator is proposed, which is computationally easy and has high asymptotic efficiency.  相似文献

Liang and Zeger (1986) introduced a class of estimating equations that gives consistent estimates of regression parameters and of their asymptotic variances in the class of generalized linear models for cluster correlated data. When the independent variables or covariates in such models are subject to measurement errors, the parameter estimates obtained from these estimating equations are no longer consistent. To correct for the effect of measurement errors, an estimator with smaller asymptotic bias is constructed along the lines of Stefanski (1985), assuming that the measurement error variance is either known or estimable. The asymptotic distribution of the bias-corrected estimator and a consistent estimator of its asymptotic variance are also given. The special case of a binary logistic regression model is studied in detail. For this case, methods based on conditional scores and quasilikelihood are also extended to cluster correlated data. Results of a small simulation study on the performance of the proposed estimators and associated tests of hypotheses are reported.  相似文献

We consider the estimation of the expected sojourn time in a Markov renewal process under the data condition that only the counts of the exits from the states are available for fixed intervals of time. For analytical and illustrative purposes we concentrate on the two-state process case. We present least squares and method of moments estimators and compare their statistical properties both analytically and empirically. We also present modified estimators with improved properties based upon an overlapping interval sampling strategy. The major results indicate that the least squares estimator is biased in general with the bias depending on the size of the sampling interval and the first two moments of the sojourn time distribution function. The bias becomes negligible as the size of the sampling interval increases. Analytical and empirical results indicate that the method of moments estimator is less sensitive to the size of the sampling interval and has slightly better mean squared error properties than the least squares estimator.  相似文献

The “traditional” approach to the estimation of count-panel-data models with fixed effects is the conditional maximum likelihood estimator. The pseudo maximum likelihood principle can be used in these models to obtain orthogonality conditions that generate a robust estimator. This estimator is inconsistent, however, when the instruments are not strictly exogenous. This article proposes a generalized method of moments estimator for count-panel-data models with fixed effects, based on a transformation of the conditional mean specification, that is consistent even when the explanatory variables are predetermined. Two applications are discussed, the relationship between patents and research and development expenditures and the explanation of technology transfer.  相似文献

There has recently been growing interest in modeling and estimating alternative continuous time multivariate stochastic volatility models. We propose a continuous time fractionally integrated Wishart stochastic volatility (FIWSV) process, and derive the conditional Laplace transform of the FIWSV model in order to obtain a closed form expression of moments. A two-step procedure is used, namely estimating the parameter of fractional integration via the local Whittle estimator in the first step, and estimating the remaining parameters via the generalized method of moments in the second step. Monte Carlo results for the procedure show a reasonable performance in finite samples. The empirical results for the S&P 500 and FTSE 100 indexes show that the data favor the new FIWSV process rather than the one-factor and two-factor models of the Wishart autoregressive process for the covariance structure.  相似文献

Given a multiple time series sharing common autoregressive patterns, we estimate an additive model. The autoregressive component and the individual random effects are estimated by integrating maximum likelihood estimation and best linear unbiased predictions in a backfitting algorithm. The simulation study illustrated that the estimation procedure provides an alternative to the Arellano–Bond generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator of the panel model when T > N and the Arellano–Bond generally diverges. The estimator has high predictive ability. In cases where T ≤ N, the backfitting estimator is at least comparable to Arellano–Bond estimator.  相似文献

Statistical inference for the diffusion coefficients of multivariate diffusion processes has been well established in recent years; however, it is not the case for the drift coefficients. Furthermore, most existing estimation methods for the drift coefficients are proposed under the assumption that the diffusion matrix is positive definite and time homogeneous. In this article, we put forward two estimation approaches for estimating the drift coefficients of the multivariate diffusion models with the time inhomogeneously positive semidefinite diffusion matrix. They are maximum likelihood estimation methods based on both the martingale representation theorem and conditional characteristic functions and the generalized method of moments based on conditional characteristic functions, respectively. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the generalized method of moments estimation are also proved in this article. Simulation results demonstrate that these methods work well.  相似文献

In this article, we revisit the importance of the generalized jackknife in the construction of reliable semi-parametric estimates of some parameters of extreme or even rare events. The generalized jackknife statistic is applied to a minimum-variance reduced-bias estimator of a positive extreme value index—a primary parameter in statistics of extremes. A couple of refinements are proposed and a simulation study shows that these are able to achieve a lower mean square error. A real data illustration is also provided.  相似文献

The generalized method of moments (GMM) and empirical likelihood (EL) are popular methods for combining sample and auxiliary information. These methods are used in very diverse fields of research, where competing theories often suggest variables satisfying different moment conditions. Results in the literature have shown that the efficient‐GMM (GMME) and maximum empirical likelihood (MEL) estimators have the same asymptotic distribution to order n?1/2 and that both estimators are asymptotically semiparametric efficient. In this paper, we demonstrate that when data are missing at random from the sample, the utilization of some well‐known missing‐data handling approaches proposed in the literature can yield GMME and MEL estimators with nonidentical properties; in particular, it is shown that the GMME estimator is semiparametric efficient under all the missing‐data handling approaches considered but that the MEL estimator is not always efficient. A thorough examination of the reason for the nonequivalence of the two estimators is presented. A particularly strong feature of our analysis is that we do not assume smoothness in the underlying moment conditions. Our results are thus relevant to situations involving nonsmooth estimating functions, including quantile and rank regressions, robust estimation, the estimation of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and so on.  相似文献
