In 1954 Hodges and Lehmann considered the following problem: given is an i.i. normally distributed random sample with variance unknown. Under the null-hypothesis the mean is contained in a prescribed interval. Hodges and Lehmann constructed a test similar on the interval. This test is superior in power to the usual auxiliary procedure applied to this problem. Numerical calculations by Hodges and Lehmann indicated that the test is unbaised, however an analytical proof could not be given. In a recent paper the author proved unbiasedness for levels not too large, the magnitude depending on the sample size. Here the Proof is completed by establishing unbiasedness for all levels.  相似文献

The Hodges‐Lehmann estimator was originally developed as a non‐parametric estimator of a shift parameter. As it is widely used in statistical applications, the question is investigated what it is estimating if the shift model does not hold. It is shown that for data whose distributions are symmetric about their median the Hodges–Lehmann estimator based on the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test estimates the difference between the medians of the distributions. ABSTRACT

It is well known that the Hodges–Lehmann estimator is asymptotically efficient for the location parameter of the logistic distribution. In this article we give a simple and direct proof that this property also characterizes the logistic between all the symmetric location distributions under mild conditions. Using pseudolikelihood, we also show how to find from the Hodges–Lehmann estimator an asymptotically efficient estimator of the scale parameter of the logistic distribution.  相似文献

In this article, a class of estimators of the center of symmetry based on the empirical characteristic function is examined. In the spirit of the Hodges–Lehmann estimator, the resulting procedures are shown to be a function of the pairwise averages. The proposed procedures are also shown to have an equivalent representation as the minimizers of certain distances between two corresponding kernel density estimators. An alternative characterization of the Hodges–Lehmann estimator is established upon the use of a particularly simple choice of kernel.  相似文献

Five tests for the hypothesis of no treatment effects in complete blocks designs are compared with respect to asymptotic relative efficiency: the ordinary two-way analysis of variance, the analysis of variance of ranks (Friedman, 1937), the method of ranking after alignment (Hodges and Lehmann, 1962), and a method of weighted rankings proposed by Quade (1972, 1979). This comparison required devising a procedure for estimating the asymptotic relative efficiencies of test statistics with asymp-totic chi-squared distributions.  相似文献

This paper studies a class of Cramér–von Mises type minimum distance estimators of the scale parameter in the two sample randomly left truncated scale models. The proposed class of estimators includes an analogue of the well-known Hodges–Lehmann estimator. The paper proves the asymptotic normality of these estimators under mild conditions. It also contains a real data application and a simulation study making a comparison of some of the estimators in the class with the ratio of the two means.  相似文献

The relation between Hodges–Lehmann efficiency and Pitman efficiency is studied in the context of testing one-sided hypotheses about a real-valued parameter. It is first shown that for tests based on sums of independently and identically distributed observations local Hodges-Lehmann efficiency is equivalent to Pitman efficiency. Then, it is proved that this equivalence also carries over to tests based on two broad classes of M -estimators for the location problem. In all cases considered explicit formulas of the Hodges-Lehmann efficacies are obtained.  相似文献

Weighted symmetry is an extension of the classical notion of symmetry in which the tails of a distribution are similar, up to a scaling factor. The authors develop test statistics of weighted symmetry based on empirical processes. The finite‐dimensional distributions of the proposed statistics are either non‐parametric or conditionally nonparametric, according as the parameters of weighted symmetry are known or estimated. Asymptotically, the distributions of the processes behave like Brownian bridges or motions, leading to familiar distributions for the proposed test statistics. The authors also establish the asymptotic normality of Hodges‐Lehmann type estimators based on a generalization of the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Lehmann (1983) discussed several examples of absurd uniform minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators. He argued that these estimators arose because the amount of information available was inadequate for the estimation problem at hand. We study estimation of the parameter p of a r.v. x ~ Bin(p,n) using the prior hypothesis that p equals a prepecified value Po when we entertain the possibility that Po is not the right value of p, which then could be any value in (0.1). We apply notions of Hodges and Lehmann (1952), Bickel (1984) and Berger (1982) to obtain (biased) estimators which do well under the hypothesis that p = po at a small price in maximum risk. The notion of deficiency was introduced by Hodges and Lehmann. It is known that best asymptotically normal (BAN) estimators are second order asymptotically efficient in the class A2 of all second order asymptotically median unbiased estimators. In this paper it is shown that the asymptotic deficiency of any two estimators in the restricted class D of the third order asymptotically median unbiased BAN estimators is given by the difference between the coefficients of order n-1 of the variances of the estimators.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of testing the equality of two distributions when both samples are progressively Type-II censored. We discuss the following two statistics: one based on the Wilcoxon-type rank-sum precedence test, and the second based on the Kaplan–Meier estimator of the cumulative distribution function. The exact null distributions of these test statistics are derived and are then used to generate critical values and the corresponding exact levels of significance for different combinations of sample sizes and progressive censoring schemes. We also discuss their non-null distributions under Lehmann alternatives. A power study of the proposed tests is carried out under Lehmann alternatives as well as under location-shift alternatives through Monte Carlo simulations. Through this power study, it is shown that the Wilcoxon-type rank-sum precedence test performs the best.  相似文献

A necessary and sufficient condition for unbiasedness of the test of homogeneity of variances in normal samples is derived in a convenient form. In the case of two samples, it is shown that Bartlett's test is the only unbiased test of homogeneity of variances. Locally most powerful tests for augmented simple Lehmann alternatives are obtained. These tests turn out to be linearcombinations of the Savage and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test criteria. We study their performance in terms of the asymptotic efficiency relative to their parametric competitors against location and scale alternatives. The power properties of a statistic based on the use of exponential scores which may be used for testing whether a series of events occurring in time form an ordinary renewal process against trend alternatives are examined. Small sample power comparisons under a Lehmann trend alternative are made with an alternative nonparametric test based on a rank trend statistic and with the parametric test when the intervals are exponentially distributed. This article is concerned with some parametric and nonparametric estimators for the k-fold convolution of a distribution function. An alternative estimator is proposed and its unbiasedness, asymptotic unbiasedness, and consistency properties are investigated. The asymptotic normality of this estimator is established. Some applications of the estimator are given in renewal processes. This paper deals with a class of nonparametric two-sample tests for ordered alternatives. The test statistics proposed are based on the number of observations from one sample that precede or exceed a threshold specified by the other sample, and they are extensions of ?idák's test. We derive their exact null distributions and also discuss a large-sample approximation. We then study their power properties exactly against the Lehmann alternative and make some comparative comments. Finally, we present an example to illustrate the proposed tests.  相似文献

In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating the delayed renewal and variance functions in delayed renewal processes. Two parametric plug-in estimators for these functions are proposed and their unbiasedness, asymptotic unbiasedness and consistency properties are investigated. The asymptotic normality of these estimators are established. Further, a method for the computation of the estimators is given.
