A powerful test of fit for normal distributions is proposed. Based on the Lévy characterization, the test statistic is the sample correlation coefficient of normal quantiles and sums of pairs of observations from a random sample. Since the test statistic is location-scale invariant, critical values can be obtained by simulation without estimating any parameters. It is proved that this test is consistent. A power comparison study including some directed tests shows that the proposed test is competitive, it is more powerful than the well-known Jarque–Bera test, and it is comparable to Shapiro–Wilk test against a number of alternatives.  相似文献

A number of statistical tests have been recommended over the last twenty years for assessing the randomness of long binary strings used in cryptographic algorithms. Several of these tests include methods of examining subblock patterns. These tests are the uniformity test, the universal test and the repetition test. The effectiveness of these tests are compared based on the subblock length, the limitations on data requirements, and on their power in detecting deviations from randomness. Due to the complexity of the test statistics, the power functions are estimated by simulation methods. The results show that for small subblocks the uniformity test is more powerful than the universal test, and that there is some doubt about the parameters of the hypothesised distribution for the universal test statistic. For larger subblocks the results show that the repetition test is the most effective test, since it requires far less data than either of the other two tests and is an efficient test in detecting deviations from randomness in binary strings.  相似文献

A distribution-free runs test for conditional symmetry is proposed. The null distribution of the test statistics is derived. Intensive simulation is conducted to examine the power of the proposed test for different sample sizes and different alternatives. The powers of the likelihood ratio (LR) test and an “asymptotically (in some sense) optimum” invariant test are examined and compared by simulation techniques with those of several other relevant tests for the problem of testing the equality of two univariate normal population means under the assumption of heterogeneous variances but homogeneous coefficients of variation. It is seen that the LR test is highly satisfactory for all values of the coefficient of variation and the “asymptotically optimum” invariant test, which is computationally much simpler than the LR test, is a reasonably good competitor for cases where the value of the coefficient of variation is greater than or equal to 3. In the context of a research project in ergonomy, myoelectric signals monitored over two to three hour periods gave rise to long noisy time series, which were smoothed using running medians. Tests developed by the authors show that the patterns displayed by the smoothed time series are not artifacts of smoothed white noise. Indeed, the smoothed series show amplitude fluctuations and short‐term correlations which are larger than those obtained by applying running medians to independent, identically distributed data. In this article, two new consistent estimators are introduced of Shannon's entropy that compares root of mean-square error with other estimators. Then we define new tests for normality based on these new estimators. In this study, we develop a test based on computational approach for the equality of variances of several normal populations. The proposed method is numerically compared with the existing methods. The numeric results demonstrate that the proposed method performs very well in terms of type I error rate and power of test. Furthermore we study the robustness of the tests by using simulation study when the underlying data are from t, exponential and uniform distributions. Finally we analyze a real dataset that motivated our study using the proposed test.  相似文献

This paper deals with the extended generalized inverse Gaussian (EGIG) distribution which has more than one turning point of the failure rate for certain values of the parameters. The EGIG model is a versatile model for analysing lifetime data and has one additional parameter, δ, than the GIG model's three parameters [B. Jorgensen, Statistical Properties of the Generalized Inverse Gaussian Distribution, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1982]. For the EGIG model, the maximum-likelihood estimation of the four parameters is discussed and a score test is developed for testing the importance of the additional parameter, δ. A non-central chi-square approximation to the power of the score test is provided. Simulation studies are carried out to examine the performance of the score test and the Wald confidence intervals. Finally, an example discussed by Jorgensen [5] is provided to illustrate that the EGIG model fits the data better than the GIG of Jorgensen [5]. Three other examples are presented and the power comparisons are displayed for each.  相似文献

A method for constructing powerful significance tests for the equivalence of two proportions is proposed by assuming prior density values. Recent changes in the medical research environment emphasize the need for choice of a prior density in advance of any study. The proposed test is based on the posterior probability of the alternative model and preserves the significance level with minimal reduction of power. The new test performs better than the familiar mid-p test under the uniform prior density condition. In addition, the computational burden is low. Potential extensions of the proposed test to related problems are also discussed.  相似文献

A test for lack of fit in regression is presented. Unlike other methods, this one doesn't require replicates or a prior estimate of variance. It can be used for linear or multiple regression, and would be easy to add to existing computer packages. It is based on comparing a fit over low leverage points with a fit over the entire set of data. Distribution theory results are pre¬sented, with examples of power. A new generalized p-value method is proposed for testing the equality of coefficients of variation in k normal populations. Simulation studies show that the type I error probabilities are close to the nominal level. The proposed test is also compared with likelihood ratio test, modified Bennett's test and score test through Monte Carlo simulation, the results demonstrate that the generalized p-value method has satisfactory performance in terms of sizes and powers.  相似文献

Friedman's test is a widely used rank-based alternative to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) F-test for identifying treatment differences in a randomized complete block design. Many texts provide incomplete or misleading information about when Friedman's test may be appropriately applied. We discuss the assumptions needed for the test and common misconceptions. We show via simulation that when the variance or skew of the treatment distributions differ, application of Friedman's test to detect differences in treatment location can result in Type I error probabilities larger than the nominal α, and even when α is unaffected, the power of the test can be less than expected.  相似文献

Graphs are presented on which the empirical distribution function can be plotted to test the assumption of normality by the Lilliefors test. A second set of graphs is presented for using the Lilliefors test on exponential distributions. The graphs allow for tests at the 10 percent, 5 percent, and 1 percent levels of significance. Use of these graphs makes it easy for students in a first course in statistics to test normal and exponential distributions without having to unravel the mystery associated with putting together a chi-squared goodness-of-fit test.  相似文献

We propose a modification of a Modarres–Gastwirth test for the hypothesis of symmetry about a known center. By means of a Monte Carlo Study we show that the modified test overtakes the original Modarres–Gastwirth test for a wide spectrum of asymmetrical alternatives coming from the lambda family and for all assayed sample sizes. We also show that our test is the best runs test among the runs tests we have compared.  相似文献

Many robust tests for the equality of variances have been proposed recently. Brown and Forsythe (1974) and Layard (1973) review some of the well-known procedures and compare them by simulation methods. Brown and Forsythe’s alternative formulation of Levene’s test statistic is found to be quite robust under certain nonnormal distributions. The performance of the methods, however, suffers in the presence of heavy tailed distributions such as the Cauchy distribution.

In this paper, we propose and study a simple robust test. The results obtained from the Monte Carlo study compare favorably with those of the existing procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new estimator of entropy of a continuous random variable. We compare the proposed estimator with the existing estimators, namely, Vasicek [A test for normality based on sample entropy, J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 38 (1976), pp. 54–59], van Es [Estimating functionals related to a density by class of statistics based on spacings, Scand. J. Statist. 19 (1992), pp. 61–72], Correa [A new estimator of entropy, Commun. Statist. Theory and Methods 24 (1995), pp. 2439–2449] and Wieczorkowski-Grzegorewski [Entropy estimators improvements and comparisons, Commun. Statist. Simulation and Computation 28 (1999), pp. 541–567]. We next introduce a new test for normality. By simulation, the powers of the proposed test under various alternatives are compared with normality tests proposed by Vasicek (1976) and Esteban et al. For the sign testing problem about the normal variances, we develop the heuristic testing procedure based on the concept of generalized test variable and generalized p-value. A detailed simulation study is conducted to empirically investigate the performance of the proposed method. Through the simulation study, especially in small sample sizes, the proposed test not only adequately controls empirical size at the nominal level, but also uniformly more powerful than likelihood ratio test, Gutmann's test, Li and Sinha's test and Liu and Chan's test, showing that the proposed method can be recommended in practice.
