The paper examines alternative estimators for the mean of a spatial process where observations are not independent. Properties of the sample mean and its standard error are contrasted with those of maximum likelihood estimators derived for three spatial models. The information loss caused by spatial dependency in the data is examined. The distribution theory for the estimators is reviewed and the paper concludes with an empirical example illustrating the properties of the estimators and the practical benefits of the maximum likelihood procedure.  相似文献

This paper compares the properties of various estimators for a beta‐binomial model for estimating the size of a heterogeneous population. It is found that maximum likelihood and conditional maximum likelihood estimators perform well for a large population with a large capture proportion. The jackknife and the sample coverage estimators are biased for low capture probabilities. The performance of the martingale estimator is satisfactory, but it requires full capture histories. The Gibbs sampler and Metropolis‐Hastings algorithm provide reasonable posterior estimates for informative priors.  相似文献

The usual maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of the von Mises distribution are shown to perform badly in small samples. In view of this and the fact that these estimators require a large amount of computation, alternative, simpler estimators are proposed. It is shown that these estimators are at least comparable to the traditional estimators and are, in many cases, superior to them. We also apply the procedure of jackknifing to the maximum likelihood estimator of the concentration parameter of the von Mises distribution and compare the properties of the jackknifed estimator with the other estimators considered in this paper.  相似文献

Two bimatrix distributions with beta and gamma marginals are introduced. Various properties (including product moments of determinants and traces, entropies, marginal distributions) are derived. Parameter estimation by the method of maximum likelihood is discussed. The performance and efficiencies of the maximum likelihood estimators and the associated confidence intervals are assessed by simulation. The efficiencies are compared versus those for the maximum likelihood estimators and the associated confidence intervals based on matrix variate gamma distributions. A discussion of possible applications of the bimatrix distributions is given.  相似文献

This paper proposes different estimators for the parameters of SemiPareto and Pareto autoregressive minification processes The asymptotic properties of the estimators are established by showing that the SemiPareto process is α-mixing. Asymptotic variances of different moment and maximum likelihood estimators are compared.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, we aim to establish some theoretical properties of Izawa’s bivariate gamma distribution having equal shape parameters. First, we propose a procedure to obtain the maximum likelihood estimates and derive an expression for the Fisher information. Simulation studies illuminate the properties of maximum likelihood estimators. We also establish an asymptotic test for independence based on the limiting distribution of maximum likelihood estimators.  相似文献

This article introduces a five-parameter Beta-Dagum distribution from which moments, hazard and entropy, and reliability measures are then derived. These properties show the high flexibility of the said distribution. The maximum likelihood estimators of the Beta-Dagum parameters are examined and the expected Fisher information matrix provided. Next, a simulation study is carried out which shows the good performance of maximum likelihood estimators for finite samples. Finally, the usefulness of the new distribution is illustrated through real data sets.  相似文献

The Fisher information is intricately linked to the asymptotic (first-order) optimality of maximum likelihood estimators for parametric complete-data models. When data are missing completely at random in a multivariate setup, it is shown that information in a single observation is well-defined and it plays the same role as in the complete-data model in characterizing the first-order asymptotic optimality properties of associated maximum likelihood estimators; computational aspects are also thoroughly appraised. As an illustration, the logistic regression model with incomplete binary responses and an incomplete categorical covariate is worked out.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new distribution, namely, the slashed half-normal distribution and it can be seen as an extension of the half-normal distribution. It is shown that the resulting distribution has more kurtosis than the ordinary half-normal distribution. Moments and some properties are derived for the new distribution. Moment estimators and maximum likelihood estimators can computed using numerical procedures. Results of two real data application are reported where model fitting is implemented by using maximum likelihood estimation. The applications illustrate the better performance of the new distribution.  相似文献

A new method for estimating a set of odds ratios under an order restriction based on estimating equations is proposed. The method is applied to those of the conditional maximum likelihood estimators and the Mantel-Haenszel estimators. The estimators derived from the conditional likelihood estimating equations are shown to maximize the conditional likelihoods. It is also seen that the restricted estimators converge almost surely to the respective odds ratios when the respective sample sizes become large regularly. The restricted estimators are compared with the unrestricted maximum likelihood estimators by a Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation studies show that the restricted estimates improve the mean squared errors remarkably, while the Mantel-Haenszel type estimates are competitive with the conditional maximum likelihood estimates, being slightly worse.  相似文献

The three-parameter inverse Gaussian distribution is defined and moment estimators and maximum likelihood estimators are obtained. The moment estimators are found in closed form and their asymprotic normality is proven. A sufficient condition is provided for the existence of the maximum likelihood estimators.  相似文献

Maximum pseudolikelihood (MPL) estimators are useful alternatives to maximum likelihood (ML) estimators when likelihood functions are more difficult to manipulate than their marginal and conditional components. Furthermore, MPL estimators subsume a large number of estimation techniques including ML estimators, maximum composite marginal likelihood estimators, and maximum pairwise likelihood estimators. When considering only the estimation of discrete models (on a possibly countably infinite support), we show that a simple finiteness assumption on an entropy-based measure is sufficient for assessing the consistency of the MPL estimator. As a consequence, we demonstrate that the MPL estimator of any discrete model on a bounded support will be consistent. Our result is valid in parametric, semiparametric, and nonparametric settings.  相似文献

The linear Toeplitz covariance structure model of order one is considered. We give some elegant explicit expressions of the Locally Minimum Variance Quadratic Unbiased Estimators of its covariance parameters. We deduce from a Monte Carlo method some properties of their Gaussian maximum likelihood estimators. Finally, for small sample sizes, these two types of estimators are compared with the intuitive empirical estimators and it is shown that the empirical biased estimators should be used.  相似文献

We consider AR(q) models in time series with asymmetric innovations represented by two families ofdistributions: (i) gamma with support IR : (0, ∞), and (ii) generalized logistic with support IR:(-∞,∞). Since the ML (maximum likelihood) estimators are intractable, we derive the MML (modified maximum likelihood) estimators of the parameters and show that they are remarkably efficient besides being easy to compute. We investigate the efficiency properties of the classical LS (least squares) estimators. Their efficiencies relative to the proposed MML estimators are very low.  相似文献

Point estimators for a scalar parameter of interest in the presence of nuisance parameters can be defined as zero-level confidence intervals as explained in Skovgaard (1989). A natural implementation of this approach is based on estimating equations obtained from higher-order pivots for the parameter of interest. In this paper, generalising the results in Pace and Salvan (1999) outside exponential families, we take as an estimating function the modified directed likelihood. This is a higher-order pivotal quantity that can be easily computed in practice for a wide range of models, using recent advances in higher-order asymptotics (HOA, 2000). The estimators obtained from these estimating equations are a refinement of the maximum likelihood estimators, improving their small sample properties and keeping equivariance under reparameterisation. Simple explicit approximate versions of these estimators are also derived and have the form of the maximum likelihood estimator plus a function of derivatives of the loglikelihood function. Some examples and simulation studies are discussed for widely-used model classes.  相似文献

For two-dimensional spatial autoregressive (AR) models, asymptotic properties of the spatial Yule-Walker (YW) estimators (Tjøstheim, 1978) are studied. These estimators although consistent, are shown to be asymptotically biased. Estimators from the first-order spatial bilateral AR model are looked at in more detail and the spatial YW estimators for this model are compared with the exact maximum likelihood estimators. Small sample properties of both estimators are also discussed briefly and some simulation results are presented.  相似文献

Block and Basu bivariate exponential distribution is one of the most popular absolutely continuous bivariate distributions. Extensive work has been done on the Block and Basu bivariate exponential model over the past several decades. Interestingly it is observed that the Block and Basu bivariate exponential model can be extended to the Weibull model also. We call this new model as the Block and Basu bivariate Weibull model. We consider different properties of the Block and Basu bivariate Weibull model. The Block and Basu bivariate Weibull model has four unknown parameters and the maximum likelihood estimators cannot be obtained in closed form. To compute the maximum likelihood estimators directly, one needs to solve a four dimensional optimization problem. We propose to use the EM algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters. The proposed EM algorithm can be carried out by solving one non-linear equation at each EM step. Our method can be also used to compute the maximum likelihood estimators for the Block and Basu bivariate exponential model. One data analysis has been preformed for illustrative purpose.  相似文献

Abstract

Statistical distributions are very useful in describing and predicting real world phenomena. In many applied areas there is a clear need for the extended forms of the well-known distributions. Generally, the new distributions are more flexible to model real data that present a high degree of skewness and kurtosis. The choice of the best-suited statistical distribution for modeling data is very important.

In this article, we proposed an extended generalized Gompertz (EGGo) family of EGGo. Certain statistical properties of EGGo family including distribution shapes, hazard function, skewness, limit behavior, moments and order statistics are discussed. The flexibility of this family is assessed by its application to real data sets and comparison with other competing distributions. The maximum likelihood equations for estimating the parameters based on real data are given. The performances of the estimators such as maximum likelihood estimators, least squares estimators, weighted least squares estimators, Cramer-von-Mises estimators, Anderson-Darling estimators and right tailed Anderson-Darling estimators are discussed. The likelihood ratio test is derived to illustrate that the EGGo distribution is better than other nested models in fitting data set or not. We use R software for simulation in order to perform applications and test the validity of this model.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new family of robust estimators for ARMA models. These estimators are defined by replacing the residual sample autocovariances in the least squares equations by autocovariances based on ranks. The asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators is provided. The efficiency and robustness properties of these estimators are studied. An adequate choice of the score functions gives estimators which have high efficiency under normality and robustness in the presence of outliers. The score functions can also be chosen so that the resulting estimators are asymptotically as efficient as the maximum likelihood estimators for a given distribution.  相似文献
