In this article, we propose a testing technique for multivariate heteroscedasticity, which is expressed as a test of linear restrictions in a multivariate regression model. Four test statistics with known asymptotical null distributions are suggested, namely the Wald, Lagrange multiplier (LM), likelihood ratio (LR) and the multivariate Rao F-test. The critical values for the statistics are determined by their asymptotic null distributions, but bootstrapped critical values are also used. The size, power and robustness of the tests are examined in a Monte Carlo experiment. Our main finding is that all the tests limit their nominal sizes asymptotically, but some of them have superior small sample properties. These are the F, LM and bootstrapped versions of Wald and LR tests.  相似文献

This article derives the large-sample distributions of Lagrange multiplier (LM) tests for parameter instability against several alternatives of interest in the context of cointegrated regression models. The fully modified estimator of Phillips and Hansen is extended to cover general models with stochastic and deterministic trends. The test statistics considered include the SupF test of Quandt, as well as the LM tests of Nyblom and of Nabeya and Tanaka. It is found that the asymptotic distributions depend on the nature of the regressor processes—that is, if the regressors are stochastic or deterministic trends. The distributions are noticeably different from the distributions when the data are weakly dependent. It is also found that the lack of cointegration is a special case of the alternative hypothesis considered (an unstable intercept), so the tests proposed here may also be viewed as a test of the null of cointegration against the alternative of no cointegration. The tests are applied to three data sets—an aggregate consumption function, a present value model of stock prices and dividends, and the term structure of interest rates.  相似文献

In this paper, tests based on the Jackknife technique are proposed to test for heteroscedasticity in the linear regression model when the errors are non-normal. These are the Jackknifed Goldfeld-Quandt (GQ), and jack-knife related variations of White (H), Lagrange multiplier (LM), Glejser (GL) and Bickel (B) tests. The power of the proposed tests is compared with that of GQ, H, LM, GL and B tests; and the robustness to the error distribution is analyzed under several heteroscedastic assumptions. The GQ test is by far the best test if the error distribution is close to normal, however, GQ test is not robust against non-normal errors. By applying the jackknife technique to the regression a more robust statistic (GQJRG) is produced but the cost is a loss in power. The GQJRG statistic generally is not M powerful as the Bickel (BlOLS) and Glejser (GLlOLS) statistics.  相似文献

Detecting parameter shift in garch models   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper applies recent theories of testing for parameter constancy to the conditional variance in a GARCH model. The supremum Lagrange multiplier test for conditional Gaussian GARCH models and its robustified variants are discussed. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistics are derived from the weak convergence of the scores, and the critical values from the hitting probability of squared Bessel process.

Monte Carlo studies on the finite sample size and power performance of the supremum LM tests are conducted. Applications of these tests to S&P 500 indicate that the hypothesis of stable conditional variance parameters can be rejected.  相似文献

It has been known that when there is a break in the variance (unconditional heteroskedasticity) of the error term in linear regression models, a routine application of the Lagrange multiplier (LM) test for autocorrelation can cause potentially significant size distortions. We propose a new test for autocorrelation that is robust in the presence of a break in variance. The proposed test is a modified LM test based on a generalized least squares regression. Monte Carlo simulations show that the new test performs well in finite samples and it is especially comparable to other existing heteroskedasticity-robust tests in terms of size, and much better in terms of power.  相似文献

The assumption of serial independence of disturbances is the starting point of most of the work done on analyzing market disequilibrium models. We derive tests for serial dependence given normality and homoscedasticity using the Lagrange multiplier (LM) test principle. Although the likelihood function under serial dependence is very complicated and involves multiple integrals of dimensions equal to the sample size, the test statistic we obtain through the LM principle is very simple. We apply the test to the housing-start data of Fair and Jaffee (1972) and study its finite sample properties through simulation. The test seems to perform quite well in finite samples in terms of size and power. We present an analysis of disequilibrium models that assumes that the disturbances are logistic rather than normal. The relative performances of these distributions are investigated by simulation.  相似文献

This paper obtains the joint and conditional Lagrange multiplier (LM) tests for a spatial lag regression model with spatial auto-regressive error derived in Anselin (Reg Sci Urban Ecom 26:77–104, 1996) using artificial double length regressions (DLR). These DLR tests and their corresponding LM tests are compared using an illustrative example and a Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

We show that the Lagrange multiplier (LM) unit root test exhibits size distortions when a break in the innovation variance exists but is ignored. We develop a modified LM unit root test that is based on a generalized least-squares transformation of the original series. The asymptotic null distribution of the new modified LM unit root test is derived. Finite-sample simulation evidence shows that the modified LM unit root test maintains its size and has reasonable power against the trend stationary alternative.  相似文献

We consider a panel model with spatial autocorrelation and heterogeneity across time. Various Lagrange multiplier and likelihood ratio test statistics are developed for testing time effects and spatial effects, jointly, marginally or conditionally. Limiting null distributions of the tests are derived. Size and power performances of the proposed tests are compared by a Monte-Carlo experiment.  相似文献

When the error terms are autocorrelated, the conventional t-tests for individual regression coefficients mislead us to over-rejection of the null hypothesis. We examine, by Monte Carlo experiments, the small sample properties of the unrestricted estimator of ρ and of the estimator of ρ restricted by the null hypothesis. We compare the small sample properties of the Wald, likelihood ratio and Lagrange multiplier test statistics for individual regression coefficients. It is shown that when the null hypothesis is true, the unrestricted estimator of ρ is biased. It is also shown that the Lagrange multiplier test using the maximum likelihood estimator of ρ performs better than the Wald and likelihood ratio tests.  相似文献

This paper extends the one-way heteroskedasticity score test of Holly and Gardiol (2000, In: Krishnakumar, J, Ronchetti, E (Eds.), Panel Data Econometrics: Future Directions, North-Holland, Amsterdam, pp. 199–211) to two conditional Lagrange Multiplier (LM) tests of heteroskedasticity under contiguous alternatives within the two-way error components model framework. In each case, the derivation of Rao's efficient score statistics for testing heteroskedasticity is first obtained. Then, based on a specific set of assumptions, the asymptotic distribution of the score under contiguous alternatives is established. Finally, the expression for the score test statistic in the presence of heteroskedasticity and related asymptotic local powers of these score test statistics are derived and discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we examine by Monte Carlo experiments the small sample properties of the W (Wald), LM (Lagrange Multiplier) and LR (Likelihood Ratio) tests for equality between sets of coefficients in two linear regressions under heteroscedasticity. The small sample properties of the size-corrected W, LM and LR tests proposed by Rothenberg (1984) are also examined and it is shown that the performances of the size-corrected W and LM tests are very good. Further, we examine the two-stage test which consists of a test for homoscedasticity followed by the Chow (1960) test if homoscedasticity is indicated or one of the W, LM or LR tests if heteroscedasticity should be assumed. It is shown that the pretest does not reduce much the bias in the size when the sizecorrected citical values are used in the W, LM and LR tests.  相似文献

We derive general distribution tests based on the method of maximum entropy (ME) density. The proposed tests are derived from maximizing the differential entropy subject to given moment constraints. By exploiting the equivalence between the ME and maximum likelihood (ML) estimates for the general exponential family, we can use the conventional likelihood ratio (LR), Wald, and Lagrange multiplier (LM) testing principles in the maximum entropy framework. In particular, we use the LM approach to derive tests for normality. Monte Carlo evidence suggests that the proposed tests are compatible with and sometimes outperform some commonly used normality tests. We show that the proposed tests can be extended to tests based on regression residuals and non-i.i.d. data in a straightforward manner. An empirical example on production function estimation is presented.  相似文献

This paper generalizes the Lagrange multiplier test for heteroscedasticity to a dynamic simultaneous equation model. A proof ofthe validity of the test is given. Small sample proper- ties of the Lagrange multiplier test and its 'studentized' version, under normal and non-normal errors, are investigated using a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

In this article, three innovative panel error-correction model (PECM) tests are proposed. These tests are based on the multivariate versions of the Wald (W), likelihood ratio (LR), and Lagrange multiplier (LM) tests. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the size and power of the tests are investigated when the error terms exhibit both cross-sectional dependence and independence. We find that the LM test is the best option when the error terms follow independent white-noise processes. However, in the more empirically relevant case of cross-sectional dependence, we conclude that the W test is the optimal choice. In contrast to previous studies, our method is general and does not rely on the strict assumption that a common factor causes the cross-sectional dependency. In an empirical application, our method is also demonstrated in terms of the Fisher effect—a hypothesis about the existence of which there is still no clear consensus. Based on our sample of the five Nordic countries we utilize our powerful test and discover evidence which, in contrast to most previous research, confirms the Fisher effect.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A Lagrange multiplier test for testing the parametric structure of a constant conditional correlation-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (CCC-GARCH) model is proposed. The test is based on decomposing the CCC-GARCH model multiplicatively into two components, one of which represents the null model, whereas the other one describes the misspecification. A simulation study shows that the test has good finite sample properties. We compare the test with other tests for misspecification of multivariate GARCH models. The test has high power against alternatives where the misspecification is in the GARCH parameters and is superior to other tests. The test is not greatly affected by misspecification in the conditional correlations and is therefore well suited for considering misspecification of GARCH equations.  相似文献

This article suggests a robust LM (Lagrange Multiplier) test for spatial error model which not only reduces the influence of spatial lag dependence immensely, but also presents robust changes of spatial layouts and distribution misspecification. Monte Carlo simulation results imply that existing LM tests have serious size and power distortion with the presence of spatial lag dependence, group interaction or nonnormal distribution, but the robust LM test of this article shows well performance.  相似文献

The estimated score test is a hypothesis testing procedure that can improve on the standard score, or Lagrange multiplier (LM) test. The score for a parameter of interest will usually contain nuisance parameters. Essentially, the test replaces nuisance parameters by estimates and then takes the difference between this estimated score and its expectation as the critical region for a test. If the expectation is zero the test coincides with the standard score, or LM, test, but if the expectation is non-zero the small sample properties of the tests differ. In some cases even asymptotic properties differ. This paper examines the scope for the application of estimated score tests in econometrics and illustrates with examples. Comparisons with the standard tests emphasize differences between the tests in terms of the true, as distinct from nominal, sizes of tests.  相似文献
