Calculating the simplex median   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
While much attention has recently focussed on the use of multivariate medians for estimating the centre of a data set, a particular median based upon random simplexes proposed by Liu has been overshadowed by progress on other multivariate medians. The purpose of this paper is to redress the balance, and to show that Liu's simplex median is tractable, and has distinctive desirable properties that recommend it for use in data analysis.  相似文献

Censored median regression has proved useful for analyzing survival data in complicated situations, say, when the variance is heteroscedastic or the data contain outliers. In this paper, we study the sparse estimation for censored median regression models, which is an important problem for high dimensional survival data analysis. In particular, a new procedure is proposed to minimize an inverse-censoring-probability weighted least absolute deviation loss subject to the adaptive LASSO penalty and result in a sparse and robust median estimator. We show that, with a proper choice of the tuning parameter, the procedure can identify the underlying sparse model consistently and has desired large-sample properties including root-n consistency and the asymptotic normality. The procedure also enjoys great advantages in computation, since its entire solution path can be obtained efficiently. Furthermore, we propose a resampling method to estimate the variance of the estimator. The performance of the procedure is illustrated by extensive simulations and two real data applications including one microarray gene expression survival data.  相似文献

We discuss moving window techniques for fast extraction of a signal composed of monotonic trends and abrupt shifts from a noisy time series with irrelevant spikes. Running medians remove spikes and preserve shifts, but they deteriorate in trend periods. Modified trimmed mean filters use a robust scale estimate such as the median absolute deviation about the median (MAD) to select an adaptive amount of trimming. Application of robust regression, particularly of the repeated median, has been suggested for improving upon the median in trend periods. We combine these ideas and construct modified filters based on the repeated median offering better shift preservation. All these filters are compared w.r.t. fundamental analytical properties and in basic data situations. An algorithm for the update of the MAD running in time O(log n) for window width n is presented as well.  相似文献

In nomination sampling, the largest values from several independent random samples (nominees) are rank ordered, and an estimate of the population median is formed by interpolating between 2 of these order statistics. The resulting estimate compares favorably to the sample median of a simple random sample from the same population. When historical data sets retain only extreme values, nomination sampling may offer the only practical way to estimate the population median. The approach may also be useful when potential survey respondents will only participate if they can actively influence the selection of cases for analysis.  相似文献

We study the residual median process, defined as the median of those observations which are greater than a number t. Using appropriate limit theorems, it is shown that the stochastic process converges in law to a Gaussian process defined in terms of a Brownian bridge.  相似文献

In this paper, we extend the univariate control median test to the multivariate case. We apply the permutation principle for the null distribution function of the test statistic and obtain a conditionally nonparametric test procedure. Because of the amount of computational work involved in implementing the test, we consider the normal approximation. We prove the consistency and derive the asymptotic efficiency of our control median test relative to Puri and Sen's median test. Finally, we compare the power of our control median test with those of Hotelling's T2 test and Puri and Sen's median test through the simulations.  相似文献

In this article, the asymptotic distribution of the circular median is derived for symmetric distributions on the circle. Its asymptotic relative efficienty with respect to the mean direction and to an estimator proposed by Watson (1983) is then examined. Special attention is given to the cases where the underlying distribution is von Mises and contaminated von Mises. It is seen that the circular median can perform more efficiently than both estimators in presence of outliers.  相似文献

The small-sample bias and root mean squared error of several distribution-free estimators of the variance of the sample median are examined. A new estimator is proposed that is easy to compute and tends to have the smallest bias and root mean squared error.  相似文献

The authors consider the multivariate one-sample location problem with clustered data from a nonparametric viewpoint. They propose the spatial median and its affine equivariant version as companion estimators to the affine invariant sign test of Larocque (2003). They extend the asymptotics of the proposed estimators to cluster dependent data and explore the limiting as well as finite-sample efficiencies for multivariate Student distributions. They demonstrate that the efficiency of the spatial median suffers less from intracluster correlation than the mean vector. They use data on the well-being of pupils in Finnish schools to illustrate their work.  相似文献

For randomly censored data, the authors propose a general class of semiparametric median residual life models. They incorporate covariates in a generalized linear form while leaving the baseline median residual life function completely unspecified. Despite the non‐identifiability of the survival function for a given median residual life function, a simple and natural procedure is proposed to estimate the regression parameters and the baseline median residual life function. The authors derive the asymptotic properties for the estimators, and demonstrate the numerical performance of the proposed method through simulation studies. The median residual life model can be easily generalized to model other quantiles, and the estimation method can also be applied to the mean residual life model. A weighted spatial median is proposed for the multivariate one-sample location problem with clustered data. Its limiting distribution is derived under mild conditions (no moment assumptions) and it is shown to be multivariate normal. Asymptotic as well as finite sample efficiencies and breakdown properties are considered, and the theoretical results are supplied with illustrative examples. It turns out that there is a potential for meaningful gains in estimation efficiency: the weighted spatial median has superior efficiency to the unweighted spatial median particularly when the cluster sizes are widely disparate and in the presence of strong intracluster correlation. The unweighted spatial median for clustered data was considered earlier by Nevalainen et al. (Can J Statist, in press, 2007). The proposed weighted estimators provide companion estimates to the weighted affine invariant sign test proposed recently by Larocque et al. (Biometrika, in press, 2007). An affine equivariant weighted spatial median is discussed in parallel.  相似文献

This paper gives the results of a new simulation study for the familiar calibration problem and the less familiar inverse median estimation problem. The latter arises when one wishes to estimate from a linear regression analysis the value of the independent variable corresponding to a specified value of the median of the dependent variable. For example, from the results of a regression analysis between stress and time to failure, one might wish to estimate the stress at which the median time to failure is 10,000 hours. In the study, the mean square error, Pitman closeness, and probability of overestimation are compared for both the calibration problem and the inverse median estimation problem for (1) the classical estimator, (2) the inverse estimator, and (3) a modified version of an estimator proposed by Naszodi (1978) for both a small sample and a moderately large sample situation.  相似文献

We introduce conditional median absolute deviation to characterize how the local variability of one quantitative random variable varies with another one. A two-step estimation procedure is proposed and the resultant estimator possesses an adaptiveness property. Simulation indicates that this estimator is much more efficient than its competitors such as the conditional semi-interquartile range.  相似文献

In this paper we outline and illustrate an easy-to-use inference procedure for directly calculating the approximate bootstrap percentile-type p-value for the one-sample median test, i.e. we calculate the bootstrap p -value without resampling, by using a fractional order statistics based approach. The method parallels earlier work on fractionalorder-statistics-based non-parametric bootstrap percentile-type confidence intervals for quantiles. Monte Carlo simulation studies are performed, which illustrate that the fractional-order-statistics-based approach to the one-sample median test has accurate type I error control for small samples over a wide range of distributions; is easy to calculate; and is preferable to the sign test in terms of type I error control and power. Furthermore, the fractional-order-statistics-based median test is easily generalized to testing that any quantile has some hypothesized value; for example, tests for the upper or lower quartile may be performed using the same framework.  相似文献

The problem of comparing two independent groups of univariate data in the sense of testing for equivalence is considered for a fully nonparametric setting. The distribution of the data within each group may be a mixture of both a continuous and a discrete component, and no assumptions are made regarding the way in which the distributions of the two groups of data may differ from each other – in particular, the assumption of a shift model is avoided. The proposed equivalence testing procedure for this scenario refers to the median of the independent difference distribution, i.e. to the median of the differences between independent observations from the test group and the reference group, respectively. The procedure provides an asymptotic equivalence test, which is symmetric with respect to the roles of ‘test’ and ‘reference’. It can be described either as a two‐one‐sided‐tests (TOST) approach, or equivalently as a confidence interval inclusion rule. A one‐sided variant of the approach can be applied analogously to non‐inferiority testing problems. The procedure may be generalised to equivalence testing with respect to quantiles other than the median, and is closely related to tolerance interval type inference. In this paper, we consider the application of the empirical likelihood for

linear models under median constraints in view of robustness. For two simple median constraints, it is shown that conditions to ensure the consistency of the empirical likelihood confidence regions can be surprisingly relaxed compared with the normal approach under L norm. However, the coverage accuracy of the empirical likelihood confidence regions based on simple median constrains cannot be improved because of the discontinuity of the constraints. Therefore, a smoothed version of median constraint is proposed and a general theory is established to ensure its validity.  相似文献

We discuss smoothed rank statistics for testing the location shift parameter of the two-sample problem. They are based on discrete test statistics – the median and Wilcoxon's rank sum tests. For the one-sample problem, Maesono et al. [Smoothed nonparametric tests and their properties. arXiv preprint. 2016; ArXiv:1610.02145] reported that some nonparametric discrete tests have a problem with their p-values because of their discreteness. The p-values of Wilcoxon's test are frequently smaller than those of the median test in the tail area. This leads to an arbitrary choice of the median and Wilcoxon's rank sum tests. To overcome this problem, we propose smoothed versions of those tests. The smoothed tests inherit the good properties of the original tests and are asymptotically equivalent to them. We study the significance probabilities and local asymptotic powers of the proposed tests.  相似文献

In practice, different practitioners will use different Phase I samples to estimate the process parameters, which will lead to different Phase II control chart's performance. Researches refer to this variability as between-practitioners-variability of control charts. Since between-practitioners-variability is important in the design of the CUSUM median chart with estimated process parameters, the standard deviation of average run length (SDARL) will be used to study its properties. It is shown that the CUSUM median chart requires a larger amount of Phase I samples to sufficiently reduce the variation in the in-control ARL of the CUSUM median chart. Considering the limitation of the amount of the Phase I samples, a bootstrap approach is also used here to adjust the control limits of the CUSUM median chart. Comparisons are made for the CUSUM and Shewhart median charts with estimated parameters when using the adjusted- and unadjusted control limits and some conclusions are made.  相似文献
