Box-Behnken designs are popular with experimenters who wish to estimate a second-order model, due to their having three levels, their simplicity and their high efficiency for the second-order model. However, there are situations in which the model is inadequate due to lack of fit caused by higher-order terms. These designs have little ability to estimate third-order terms. Using combinations of factorial points, axial points, and complementary design points, we augment these designs and develop catalogues of third-order designs for 3–12 factors. These augmented designs can be used to estimate the parameters of a third-order response surface model. Since the aim is to make the most of a situation in which the experiment was designed for an inadequate model, the designs are clearly suboptimal and not rotatable for the third-order model, but can still provide useful information.  相似文献

Comparison of Four New General Classes of Search Designs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A factor screening experiment identifies a few important factors from a large list of factors that potentially influence the response. If a list consists of m factors each at three levels, a design is a subset of all possible 3 m runs. This paper considers the problem of finding designs with small numbers of runs, using the search linear model introduced in Srivastava (1975). The paper presents four new general classes of these 'search designs', each with 2 m −1 runs, which permit, at most, two important factors out of m factors to be searched for and identified. The paper compares the designs for 4 ≤ m ≤ 10, using arithmetic and geometric means of the determinants, traces and maximum characteristic roots of particular matrices. Two of the designs are found to be superior in all six criteria studied. The four designs are identical for m = 3 and this design is an optimal design in the class of all search designs under the six criteria. The four designs are also identical for m = 4 under some row and column permutations.  相似文献

For regression models with quantitative factors it is illustrated that the E-optimal design can be extremely inefficient in the sense that it degenerates to a design which takes all observations at only one point. This phenomenon is caused by the different size of the elements in the covariance matrix of the least-squares estimator for the unknown parameters. For these reasons we propose to replace the E-criterion by a corresponding standardized version. The advantage of this approach is demonstrated for the polynomial regression on a nonnegative interval, where the classical and standardized E-optimal designs can be found explicitly. The described phenomena are not restricted to the E-criterion but appear for nearly all optimality criteria proposed in the literature. Therefore standardization is recommended for optimal experimental design in regression models with quantitative factors. The optimal designs with respect to the new standardized criteria satisfy a similar invariance property as the famous D-optimal designs, which allows an easy calculation of standardized optimal designs on many linearly transformed design spaces.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The early stages of many real-life experiments involve a large number of factors among which only a few factors are active. Unfortunately, the optimal full-dimensional designs of those early stages may have bad low-dimensional projections and the experimenters do not know which factors turn out to be important before conducting the experiment. Therefore, designs with good projections are desirable for factor screening. In this regard, significant questions are arising such as whether the optimal full-dimensional designs have good projections onto low dimensions? How experimenters can measure the goodness of a full-dimensional design by focusing on all of its projections?, and are there linkages between the optimality of a full-dimensional design and the optimality of its projections? Through theoretical justifications, this paper tries to provide answers to these interesting questions by investigating the construction of optimal (average) projection designs for screening either nominal or quantitative factors. The main results show that: based on the aberration and orthogonality criteria the full-dimensional design is optimal if and only if it is optimal projection design; the full-dimensional design is optimal via the aberration and orthogonality if and only if it is uniform projection design; there is no guarantee that a uniform full-dimensional design is optimal projection design via any criterion; the projection design is optimal via the aberration, orthogonality and uniformity criteria if it is optimal via any criterion of them; and the saturated orthogonal designs have the same average projection performance.  相似文献

Search design is searching and estimating for a few non zero effects in a large set of effects along with estimation of elements in a set of unknown parameters. In presence of noise, the probability of discrimination between the true non zero effect from an alternative one depends on the design and an unknown parameter, say ρ. We develop a new criterion for design comparison which is independent of ρ and for a family density weight function show that it discriminates and ranks the designs precisely. This criterion is invariance to the variable noise which may be present between designs due to noise factors. This allows us to extend the design comparison to classes of equivalent designs.  相似文献

Missing observations can occur even in a well-planned experiment. The effect of missing observations can be much more serious when the design is saturated or near saturated. The levels of factor settings that make a design more robust to missing observations are of great importance in the sense that the loss for missing observations becomes minimum. In this study, new augmented pairs minimax loss designs are constructed, which are more robust to one missing design point than the augmented pairs designs presented by Morris (2000 Morris , M. D. ( 2000 ). A class of three-level experimental designs for response surface modeling . Technometrics 42 : 111121 .[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]). New designs are compared with augmented pairs designs, central composite designs, and small composite designs under generalized scaled standard deviations. The model used is also studied for the regression coefficient estimates.  相似文献

Block designs to which have been added a number of singly-replicated treatments, known as secondary treatments, are particularly useful for experiments where only small amounts of material are available for some treatments, for example new plant varieties. The designs are of particular use in the microarray situation. Such designs are known as 'augmented designs'. This paper obtains the properties of these designs and shows that, with an equal number of secondary treatments in each block, the A-optimal design is obtained by using the A-optimal design for the original block design. It develops formulae for the variance of treatment comparisons, for both the primary and the secondary treatments. A number of examples are used to illustrate the results.  相似文献

A complex experiment with qualirarive factors influencing the outcome of the experiment can be seen as a general ANOVA setup. A design of such an experiment will be the assignment at which of the possible levels of the factors the actual experiment should be performed. In this paper optimal designs of such experiments will be characterized with respect to three different optimality criteria including the so called uniform optimality of a design. The possible applications of the main optimization result providing these characterizations can be used to more general experiments. The particular results on these generalizations will be indicated at the end of this paper.  相似文献

A variety trial sometimes requires a resolvable block design in which the replicates are set out next to each other. The long blocks running through the replicates are then of interest. A t -latinized design is one in which groups of these t long blocks are binary. In this paper examples of such designs are given. It is shown that the algorithm described by John & Whitaker (1993) can be used to construct designs with high average efficiency factors. Upper bounds on these efficiency factors are also derived.  相似文献

In industry, experiments are often conducted sequentially due to equipment limitations dictating that only one or two simultaneous runs may be made. In this situation, early termination of the experiment results in missing points, leading to a loss in efficiency or, worse, to a singular subdesign with nonestimable model parameters. We investigate the specific problem of singularity when two points are lost from a factorial design based on n two-level factors. The method is based on the inner products of the coordinate vectors of the omitted design points and leads to some results on the nonexistence of fractional factorial designs.  相似文献

Optimal three-stage designs with equal sample sizes at each stage are presented and compared to fixed sample designs, fully sequential designs, designs restricted to use the fixed sample critical value at the final stage, and to modifications of other group sequential designs previously proposed in the literature. Typically, the greatest savings realized with interim analyses are obtained by the first interim look. More than 50% of the savings possible with a fully sequential design can be realized with a simple two-stage design. Three-stage designs can realize as much as 75% of the possible savings. Without much loss in efficiency, the designs can be modified so that the critical value at the final stage equals the usual fixed sample value while maintaining the overall level of significance, alleviating some potential confusion should a final stage be necessary. Some common group sequential designs, modified to allow early acceptance of the null hypothesis, are shown to be nearly optimal in some settings while performing poorly in others. An example is given to illustrate the use of several three-stage plans in the design of clinical trials.  相似文献

A partially balanced nested row-column design, referred to as PBNRC, is defined as an arrangement of v treatments in b p × q blocks for which, with the convention that p q, the information matrix for the estimation of treatment parameters is equal to that of the column component design which is itself a partially balanced incomplete block design. In this paper, previously known optimal incomplete block designs, and row-column and nested row-column designs are utilized to develop some methods of constructing optimal PBNRC designs. In particular, it is shown that an optimal group divisible PBNRC design for v = mn kn treatments in p × q blocks can be constructed whenever a balanced incomplete block design for m treatments in blocks of size k each and a group divisible PBNRC design for kn treatments in p × q blocks exist. A simple sufficient condition is given under which a group divisible PBNRC is Ψf-better for all f> 0 than the corresponding balanced nested row-column designs having binary blocks. It is also shown that the construction techniques developed particularly for group divisible designs can be generalized to obtain PBNRC designs based on rectangular association schemes.  相似文献

Fourth order rotatable designs are discussed. A general k, design moment inequality is given. The variance function for two-factor designs is derived, and plotted for a specific design. A minimum point set requirement for two-factor designs is established, thus enabling one to form an infinity of such designs. Some difficulties in obtaining deLigns for k>2 are described. Some questions are posed for future work.  相似文献

To explore the projection efficiency of a design, Tsai, et al [2000. Projective three-level main effects designs robust to model uncertainty. Biometrika 87, 467–475] introduced the Q criterion to compare three-level main-effects designs for quantitative factors that allow the consideration of interactions in addition to main effects. In this paper, we extend their method and focus on the case in which experimenters have some prior knowledge, in advance of running the experiment, about the probabilities of effects being non-negligible. A criterion which incorporates experimenters’ prior beliefs about the importance of each effect is introduced to compare orthogonal, or nearly orthogonal, main effects designs with robustness to interactions as a secondary consideration. We show that this criterion, exploiting prior information about model uncertainty, can lead to more appropriate designs reflecting experimenters’ prior beliefs.  相似文献

Experimental designs which use extensive blocking and which are particularly useful in plant and tree breeding trials are discussed. They can be constructed either to accommodate field restrictions or take advantage of favourable plot layouts. Computer software is available to generate these design types for use in practice. Examples cover latinized row-column designs, t -latinized and partially-latinized designs and designs with unequal block sizes.  相似文献

This article examines the central composite design in which some of the experimental runs are replicated. Three different classes of N-point designs are compared using the criterion of Schur's ordering under orthogonality, rotatablity, and slope- rotatablity conditions. The response surface designs with the star portion replicated seem to have more potential than others under orthogonality condition, while the designs with the cube portion replicated is preferable to the designs with their star portion or only the center point replicated under rotatable and slope-rotatable conditions.  相似文献

A generalized neighbor design relaxes the equality condition on the number of times two treatments occur as neighbors in the design. In this article we have constructed a new series of generalized neighbor designs with equal block sizes, a series of neighbor designs of Rees [1967. Some designs of use in serology. Biometrics 23, 779–791] and a series of neighbor designs with two distinct block sizes. Two more new series of GN2 designs are also constructed for even number of treatments. It has been shown that quasi neighbor designs introduced by Preece [1994. Balanced Ouchterlony neighbor designs. J. Combin. Math. Combin. Comput. 15, 197–219] are special cases of generalized neighbor designs with t=2t=2. All the designs given here are binary. A new definition—partially balanced circuit design is introduced which is a special case of generalized neighbor designs with binary blocks.  相似文献

Sequential experiment is an indispensable strategy and is applied immensely to various fields of science and engineering. In such experiments, it is desirable that a given design should retain the properties as much as possible when few runs are added to it. The designs based on sequential experiment strategy are called extended designs. In this paper, we have studied theoretical properties of such experimental strategies using uniformity measure. We have also derived a lower bound of extended designs under wrap-around L2-discrepancy measure. Moreover, we have provided an algorithm to construct uniform (or nearly uniform) extended designs. For ease of understanding, some examples are also presented and a lot of sequential strategies for a 27-run original design are tabulated for practice.  相似文献

The D-minimax criterion for estimating slopes of a response surface involving k factors is considered for situations where the experimental region χ and the region of interest ? are co-centered cubes but not necessarily identical. Taking χ = [ ? 1, 1]k and ? = [ ? R, R]k, optimal designs under the criterion for the full second-order model are derived for various values of R and their relative performances investigated. The asymptotically optimal design as R → ∞ is also derived and investigated. In addition, the optimal designs within the class of product designs are obtained. In the asymptotic case it is found that the optimal product design is given by a solution of a cubic equation that reduces to a quadratic equation for k = 3?and?6. Relative performances of various designs obtained are examined. In particular, the optimal asymptotic product design and the traditional D-optimal design are compared and it is found that the former performs very well.  相似文献

Nearest–neighbour balance is considered a desirable property for an experiment to possess in situations where experimental units are influenced by their neighbours. This paper introduces a measure of the degree of nearest–neighbour balance of a design. The measure is used in an algorithm which generates nearest–neighbour balanced designs and is readily modified to obtain designs with various types of nearest–neighbour balance. Nearest–neighbour balanced designs are produced for a wide class of parameter settings, and in particular for those settings for which such designs cannot be found by existing direct combinatorial methods. In addition, designs with unequal row and column sizes, and designs with border plots are constructed using the approach presented here.  相似文献
