Let л1 and л2 denote two independent gamma populations G(α1, p) and G(α2, p) respectively. Assume α(i=1,2)are unknown and the common shape parameter p is a known positive integer. Let Yi denote the sample mean based on a random sample of size n from the i-th population. For selecting the population with the larger mean, we consider, the natural rule according to which the population corresponding to the larger Yi is selected. We consider? in this paper, the estimation of M, the mean of the selected population. It is shown that the natural estimator is positively biased. We obtain the uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator(UMVE) of M. We also consider certain subclasses of estikmators of the form c1x(1) +c1x(2) and derive admissible estimators in these classes. The minimazity of certain estimators of interest is investigated. Itis shown that p(p+1)-1x(1) is minimax and dominates the UMVUE. Also UMVUE is not minimax.  相似文献

Two‐phase sampling is often used for estimating a population total or mean when the cost per unit of collecting auxiliary variables, x, is much smaller than the cost per unit of measuring a characteristic of interest, y. In the first phase, a large sample s1 is drawn according to a specific sampling design p(s1) , and auxiliary data x are observed for the units is1 . Given the first‐phase sample s1 , a second‐phase sample s2 is selected from s1 according to a specified sampling design {p(s2s1) } , and (y, x) is observed for the units is2 . In some cases, the population totals of some components of x may also be known. Two‐phase sampling is used for stratification at the second phase or both phases and for regression estimation. Horvitz–Thompson‐type variance estimators are used for variance estimation. However, the Horvitz–Thompson ( Horvitz & Thompson, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 1952 ) variance estimator in uni‐phase sampling is known to be highly unstable and may take negative values when the units are selected with unequal probabilities. On the other hand, the Sen–Yates–Grundy variance estimator is relatively stable and non‐negative for several unequal probability sampling designs with fixed sample sizes. In this paper, we extend the Sen–Yates–Grundy ( Sen , J. Ind. Soc. Agric. Statist. 1953; Yates & Grundy , J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B 1953) variance estimator to two‐phase sampling, assuming fixed first‐phase sample size and fixed second‐phase sample size given the first‐phase sample. We apply the new variance estimators to two‐phase sampling designs with stratification at the second phase or both phases. We also develop Sen–Yates–Grundy‐type variance estimators of the two‐phase regression estimators that make use of the first‐phase auxiliary data and known population totals of some of the auxiliary variables.  相似文献

The estimation of Δ under entropy and squared error loss functions are considered. We consider the estimation of Σ of the p-dimensional normal distribution Np (0, Σ) when Σ?=?θ0 Ip ?+?θ1 aa′, where a is an unknown p-dimensional normalized vector and θ0?>?0, θ1?≥?0 are also unknown. First, we derive the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimator. Second, we propose a new estimator, which dominates the REML estimator with respect to Stein's loss function. For X with binomial (n, p) distribution the usual measure of the error of X/n as an estimator of p is its standard error Sn(p) = √{E(X/n – p)2} = √{p(1 – p)/n}. A somewhat more natural measure is the average absolute error Dn(p) = E‖X/n – p‖. This article considers use of Dn(p) instead of Sn(p) in a student's first introduction to statistical estimation. Exact and asymptotic values of Dn(p), and the appearance of its graph, are described in detail. The same is done for the Poisson distribution.  相似文献

Suppose X , p × p p.d. random matrix, has the distribution which depends on a p × p p.d. parameter matrix Σ and this distribution is orthogonally invariant. The orthogonally invariant estimator of Σ which has the eigenvalues of the same order as the eigenvalues of X is called order-preserving. We conjecture that a non-order-preserving estimator is dominated by modified order-preserving estimators with respect to the entropy (Stein's) loss function. We show that an inequality on the integration of zonal polynomial is sufficient for this conjecture. We also prove this inequality for the case p = 2.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the estimation of a shift parameter δo, based on some nonnegative functional Hg1 of the pair (DδN(x), f?δN(x)), where DδN(x) = KN/b {F2,n(x)—F1,m (x + δ)}, +δN(x) = {mF1,m (x + δ) + nF2,n(x)}/N, where F1,m and F2,n are the empirical distribution functions of two independent random samples (N = m + n), and where K2N = mn/N. First an estimator δN, is defined as a value of δ minimizing a functional H of the type of H1. A second estimator δ1N is also defined which is a linearized version of the first. Finite and asymptotic properties of these estimators are considered. It is also shown that most well-known test statistics of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov type are particular cases of such functionals H1. The asymptotic distribution and the asymptotic efficiency of some estimators are given.  相似文献

We consider two consistent estimators for the parameters of the linear predictor in the Poisson regression model, where the covariate is measured with errors. The measurement errors are assumed to be normally distributed with known error variance σ u 2 . The SQS estimator, based on a conditional mean-variance model, takes the distribution of the latent covariate into account, and this is here assumed to be a normal distribution. The CS estimator, based on a corrected score function, does not use the distribution of the latent covariate. Nevertheless, for small σ u 2 , both estimators have identical asymptotic covariance matrices up to the order of σ u 2 . We also compare the consistent estimators to the naive estimator, which is based on replacing the latent covariate with its (erroneously) measured counterpart. The naive estimator is biased, but has a smaller covariance matrix than the consistent estimators (at least up to the order of σ u 2 ).  相似文献

A class of estimators of the variance σ1 2 of a normal population is introduced, by utilization the information in a sample from a second normal population with different mean and variance σ2 2, under the restriction that σ1 2?≤?σ2 2. Simulation results indicate that some members of this class are more efficient than the usual minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE) of σ1 2, Stein estimator and Mehta and Gurland estimator. Let Yi denote the largest observation based on a random sample of size n from the i-th population. for selecting the best populaton, that is the one associated with the largest ?i, we consider the natural selection rule, according to which the population corresponding to the largest Yi is selected. In this paper, the estimation of M. the mean of the selected population is considered. The natural estimator is positively biased. The UMVUE (uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator) of M is derived using the (U,V)-method of Robbins (1987) and its asymptotic distribution is found. We obtain a minimax estimator of M for K≤4 and a class of admissible estimators among those of the form cYmax. For the case K = 2, the UMVUE is improved using the Brewster-Zidek (1974) Technique with respect to the squared error loss function L1 and the scale-invariant loss function L2. For the case K = 2, the MSE'S of all the estimators are compared for selected values of n and ρ=?1/(?1+?2).  相似文献

This paper considers simultaneous estimation of multivariate normal mean vector using Zellner's(1994) balanced loss function which is defined as follows:

where 0 < w < 1 and for i = 1,…,p and j = 1,…,n, Xij is distributed as normal with mean θi and variance 1. It is shown that the sample mean, X, is admissible when p <3. For p ≥3, we obtain that James-Stein type estimator which has uniformly smaller risk than that of sample mean X.  相似文献

Some statistics in common use take a form of a ratio of two statistics.In this paper, we will discuss asymptotic properties of the ratio statistic.We obtain an asymptotic representation of the ratio with remainder term o p(n -1) and a Edgeworth expansion with remainder term o(n -1/2) And as example, the asymptotic representation and the Edgeworth expansion of the jackknife skewness estimator for U-statistics are established and we discuss the biases of the skewness estimator theoretically.We also apply the result to an estimator of Pearson’s coefficient of variation and the sample correlation coefficient.  相似文献

The paper introduces a new difference-based Liu estimator β?Ldiff=([Xtilde]′[Xtilde]+I)?1([Xtilde]′[ytilde]+η β?diff) of the regression parameters β in the semiparametric regression model, y=Xβ+f+?. Difference-based estimator, β?diff=([Xtilde]′[Xtilde])?1[Xtilde]′[ytilde] and difference-based Liu estimator are analysed and compared with respect to mean-squared error (mse) criterion. Finally, the performance of the new estimator is evaluated for a real data set. Monte Carlo simulation is given to show the improvement in the scalar mse of the estimator.  相似文献

In this paper, a new estimator combined estimator (CE) is proposed for estimating the finite population mean ¯ Y N in simple random sampling assuming a long-tailed symmetric super-population model. The efficiency and robustness properties of the CE is compared with the widely used and well-known estimators of the finite population mean ¯ Y N by Monte Carlo simulation. The parameter estimators considered in this study are the classical least squares estimator, trimmed mean, winsorized mean, trimmed L-mean, modified maximum-likelihood estimator, Huber estimator (W24) and the non-parametric Hodges–Lehmann estimator. The mean square error criteria are used to compare the performance of the estimators. We show that the CE is overall more efficient than the other estimators. The CE is also shown to be more robust for estimating the finite population mean ¯ Y N , since it is insensitive to outliers and to misspecification of the distribution. The problem of estimating ordered parameters is encountered in biological, agricultural, reliability and various other experiments. Consider two populations with densities f1(x11) and f2(x22) where ω12. The estimation of ω12) with the loss function, the sum of squared errors, is studied. when fi is the fi(,i,,i 2) density with ,i known, i=1,2; we obtain a class of minimax estimators. When ω12 we show some of these estimators are improved by the maximum likelihood estimator. For a general fi we give sufficient conditions for the minimaxity of the analogue of the Pitman estimator.  相似文献

Let X 1, X 2, ..., X n be a random sample from a normal population with mean μ and variance σ 2. In many real life situations, specially in lifetime or reliability estimation, the parameter μ is known a priori to lie in an interval [a, ∞). This makes the usual maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) ̄ an inadmissible estimator of μ with respect to the squared error loss. This is due to the fact that it may take values outside the parameter space. Katz (1961) and Gupta and Rohatgi (1980) proposed estimators which lie completely in the given interval. In this paper we derive some new estimators for μ and present a comparative study of the risk performance of these estimators. Both the known and unknown variance cases have been explored. The new estimators are shown to have superior risk performance over the existing ones over large portions of the parameter space.  相似文献
