The canonical limits of Durkheim's first classic

A classic text is not always canonized. Canonical texts are frequently anything but classics. Durkheim's Division of Labor in Societyis an instance of the former; his Rules of Sociological Methodof the latter. Both books are based on errors of fact and method. Division of Laborwas so intentionally the classical theory of modern divided societies that Durkheim, son of generations of rabbis, totally misrepresented the facts of Ancient Israel. In Rules,Durkheim was so intent on writing the canonical text of sociology's methods that he stipulated rules that even he (in Suicide) could not use. Durkheim was thus a giant of the sociological past because,not in spite of, his errors. He erred because he dared to think seriously about the moral issues of his time. Hence, the ironic fate of Durkheim's sociology—it led in two different directions. From Rulesand Suicidecame modern empirical sociology. From Elementary Formscame all the antimodernists—beginning with Levi-Strauss, and from him, Derrida and the others—who became, among other things, the most articulate critics of the sociology Durkheim helped invent. Such is the genius of classic, if not canonical, authors like Durkheim.     

The proxemics lexicon: A first approximation

A lexicon of terms used in research and theory of human spatial and territorial behavior is presented. The need for greater consistency and refinement in the terminology of these fields, in light of growing research attention, is discussed.

The first five years of the journal of economic psychology

An analysis is performed on the formal and content characteristics of 121 articles published in the first six volumes of the Journal of Economic Psychology (1981–1985), and the acceptance rates are computed. The formal characteristics include length of articles, number of authors, nationality and discipline of authors and number of references. Content characteristics are topic, methodology and theoretical vs empirical. The topics of the articles are compared with the articles published in the Journal of Consumer Research.     

Responsibility and redistribution: The case of first best taxation

It is not straightforward to define the ethics of responsibility in cases where the consequences of changes in factors within our control are partly determined by factors beyond our control. In this paper, we suggest that one plausible view is to keep us responsible for the parts of the consequences that are independent of the factors beyond our control. Within the framework of a first best taxation problem, we present and characterise a redistributive mechanism that both satisfies this interpretation of the ethics of responsibility and the ethics of compensation within a broad class of economic environments. The structure of forest ownership in Scotland: a first approximation

An attempt is made to outline the structure of forest ownership in Scotland, insofar as the available sources of information permit. Particular attention is focused on the private sector, where most recent afforestation has been concentrated and to which some forests have been transferred from the Forestry Commission in recent years. More than half of the private-sector area is now owned by personal or corporate “investment’ owners: as recently as 20 years ago the sector was almost completely dominated by the traditional landed estates. Deficiencies in sources of information are reviewed, and the importance of information on ownership, in relation to matters such as future wood production and management regimes, is discussed.     

The first forty years: the history of the Community Development Journal

This article provides a critical and informed account of thefirst forty years in the history of the Community DevelopmentJournal. First published in 1966, the Journal has attemptedto effectively reflect the changing and dynamic field of communitydevelopment internationally. During the last four decades, thesuccess of the CDJ has been due to the hard work of committedEditorial Board members. However, the Board has been consciousthat being drawn almost wholly from the UK, there is the potentialfor the Journal's content to be focused in one country. TheBoard has addressed this possible problem by establishing themedissues on different world regions, on establishing an activeInternational Editorial Advisory Board and through buildingrelationships with organizations such as the International Associationfor Community Development. Nevertheless, there is a need toensure these features are well maintained if the Journal isto continue to produce the leading international peer-reviewedjournal it now is.

The reputational benefits of instructing information: The first test of the revised model of reputation repair

Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) prescribes crisis response strategies for organizations facing crisis. A meta-analysis of SCCT suggests using the prescribed responses has, at most, a small effect on reputation, while a few studies have shown that the base crisis responses (instructing information and adjusting information) may have a larger effect on reputation. This experiment compares the effects of SCCT’s prescribed responses, instructing information, and adjusting information on reputation in an experiment with 989 participants recruited from mTurk. It finds that instructing information has a very large effect on reputation, while adjusting information has a small but significant effect on reputation. In this sample, SCCT’s prescribed response strategies have no significant effect on reputation. The experiment proposes the revised model of reputation repair (REMREP) as a tool for understanding how crisis influences reputation. The model incorporates virtuousness and offensiveness, which demonstrates the importance of organizational virtuousness in handling a crisis. Implications for theory and practitioners are discussed.
