The Effects of E-journal Management Tools and Services on Serials Cataloging

Abstract

E-journal management tools and services such as MARC record services, A-to-Z lists, and link resolvers are changing e-journal cataloging. This column explores these changes in the academic environment through interviews with ten librarians representing eight universities. Three areas of change in serials cataloging are explored: (1) changes to the MARC record, including how libraries are adding/creating MARC records for their catalogs, the number and type of MARC records being created and linking within MARC bibliographic and holdings records; (2) the manner in which serials catalogers are being informed of changes; and (3) the evolving role of the serials cataloger. Future trends and advice for evolving workflow practices conclude the discussion.     

The Serialist’s Mentee: Commitment,Communication, Collaboration

Abstract

This article is based on a presentation from the 2019 North Carolina Serials Conference that described the changing nature of the mentor/mentee relationship in the face of shrinking budgets, downsized technical services departments, and the profession-wide commitment to recruiting librarians at an earlier stage in their professional career. Mentors have had to focus more on the training aspect of said relationships than they did in the past in order to create a fully autonomous colleague. In the presentation, we shared our goals, challenges, and experiences as mentor and mentee in this new paradigm.     

Library Relocation & Collection Shifts

Abstract

For authors, publishers, and researchers, the information roadmap charts and utilizes evolving technology. “Infomediary” is a new name for an old role, describing participation in both traditional and emerging ways to deliver information and publications. This article briefly defines the role of the infomediary and the types of services provided by companies such as Ingenta, ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), and Gale. The best infomediaries will provide rational order to the growing and changing base aggregation of published material as it moves from researcher to author to publisher to library and back to researcher, particularly as that material evolves from print to electronic form.     

Leaning into Browser Extensions

An array of browser extensions has been developed to help researchers locate full-text content, whether that full text is available in an institutional repository, on a publishers site, or in an open access journal. Examples of such browser extensions include Unpaywall, Kopernio, EZproxy tools, and Lean Library. This Balance Point column focuses on the growth of browser extensions, the need they are filling, and their adoption by libraries. Particular attention is paid to the Lean Library browser extension and the services offered by Lean Library. Drawing on the literature and interviews with librarians in the field, the advantages and disadvantages of browser extensions are addressed, as well as security concerns.     

The Hard Task of Soft Skills: Project Management for the Materials Review Process

Abstract

This article summarizes a presentation given by Kurt Blythe and Jennifer Solomon at the 28th annual North Carolina Serials Conference in 2019. Blythe and Solomon were brought on to lead a project to review resources in anticipation of budget constraints in 2018 and 2019. The presentation sought to answer why libraries should apply project management principles in such a situation and what the presenters learned from their experience and offered tips to any audience members considering applying project management practices to their own work.

NISO's Networked References Standards Committee

Abstract

This article describes an effort being undertaken by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) to develop a standard for collaborative networked-based reference services. Many technologies can be employed in such efforts, but the basic characteristic of such services is the ability of a user to submit questions and receive answers and information by electronic means. PCA likelihood ratio test approach for attributed social networks monitoring

Abstract

One of the most important factors in building and changing communication mechanisms in social networks is considering features of the members of social networks. Most of the existing methods in network monitoring don’t consider effects of features in network formation mechanisms and others don’t lead to reliable results when the features abound or when there are correlations among them. In this article, we combined two methods principal component analysis (PCA) and likelihood method to monitor the underlying network model when the features of individuals abound and when some of them have high correlations with each other.     

Exploring Linked Data Through the Lens of Technical Services

ABSTRACT

Linked data has swept across the library community, making its way into special collections and catalog data. What would linked data look like in a technical services environment? This article will look at the intersection of linked data and technical services. The article will begin with an introduction to linked data concepts. This will be followed by a look at linked data technologies and publishing strategies. The article will close with a discussion of potential and real applications of linked data in technical services, benefits and challenges of linked data, and thoughts on how the library community can contribute to the linked data effort.     

Truncation invariant copulas and a testing procedure

ABSTRACT

The class of bivariate copulas that are invariant under truncation with respect to one variable is considered. A simulation algorithm for the members of the class and a novel construction method are presented. Moreover, inspired by a stochastic interpretation of the members of such a class, a procedure is suggested to check whether the dependence structure of a given data set is truncation invariant. The overall performance of the procedure has been illustrated on both simulated and real data.     

Serials Digest

Abstract

A collection manager and an acquisition librarian discuss difficult decisions to be made regarding electronic resources and associated value-added services. Balancing budget constraints with patron demands for easy access to information requires librarians to reevaluate assumptions about the electronic products and associated services that have quickly become staples of library life, even as these staples become increasingly untenable. The authors scrutinize the cost/benefit of continuing value-added services, such as providing access to abstracting and indexing tools and full MARC cataloging records of journal titles, as well as considering the adoption of new services such as federated search engines and link resolvers.     

Serials Staffing for the Twenty-First Century and Beyond

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the technical services issues relating to the future of serials staffing, particularly for serials catalogers. Trends in cataloging procedures, technical services reorganizations, and the changing roles of professional and paraprofessional employees affect present and future responsibilities of serials work. The author also examines major technological innovations that have affected staffing needs, including journals in electronic format, vendor-supplied holdings data, automatic generation of bibliographic records, and the potential implications of proposed serials cataloging rule changes on the way in which serials will be managed in libraries. Digital Age Discoverability: A Collaborative Organizational Approach

Abstract

The tumultuous changes in the scholarly communications ecosystem have disrupted traditional library assumptions and established new workflows and user expectations. In response, the Auraria Library at the University of Colorado Denver initiated a collaborative design (co-design) initiative to re-invent structures, processes, services, and roles throughout the entire organization. Fostered by appreciative inquiry, enabled by social learning, and furthered by shared leadership, redesign initiated sustainable information exchange, reflective dialog, and knowledge creation practices.

The case study highlights accomplishments of technical services staff members who successfully engaged co-workers in selection, implementation, and enhancement of a Web-scale discovery service. Continuing support of the full discovery layer lifecycle illustrates evolving information practices and workplace outcomes at the Auraria Library. Concluding reflections offer transferable insights to other organizations aspiring to co-design workplace environments that enliven creativity, discovery, and exploration.     

Document Delivery as a Supplement or Replacement for Serial Subscriptions

Abstract

Increasing serials costs and shrinking budgets present challenges for academic libraries to continue providing sufficient access to scholarly articles. Rapid document delivery services can serve as an effective means to fill the gap caused by serials cancellations. This column examines several of the existing document delivery service providers and addresses issues involved in their implementation.

In November 2015, Margaret Dull interviewed Rebecca Guenther, metadata consultant, educator, and former senior networking and standards specialist at the Library of Congress. Guenther shares her views on developing metadata standards in a rapidly changing environment, focusing particularly on the development and emergence of BIBFRAME. She also shares her thoughts on her work as a metadata consultant and teaching emerging library and information professionals.     

SUSHI to Go

Abstract

The Internet, Google, e-journals, packages, e-books and patron driven acquisitions have all been perceived as “a threat to libraries as we know them.” Yet, in spite of these developments and under the weight of chronic budget pressures, the typical academic library now offers more users better access to more content and services than ever before. In this session we will look at how librarians and the vendors that serve them have responded to these “threats” to their future to create new and improved services.

Abstracting and Indexing Adapts to the Internet Era

Abstract

With the role of libraries evolving from warehousing data sources to controlling the dissemination of information sources, A&I (abstracting and indexing) information services must also evolve and play an equally important and challenging role. With over forty years of A&I publishing experience, CSA (formerly Cambridge Scientific Abstracts) has adapted A&I publishing methods to new technologies and Web-based publishing. The editorial basics of producing A&I journals and databases are unchanged; however, new production technologies, such as electronic feeds between primary and secondary publishers, electronic directory services, and machine-aided indexing, can provide efficiencies. Once just roadmaps pointing to information, A&I services are now conduits delivering information directly to the user. Serials Review 2003; 29:221–223.
