Ethnic Enclaves and the Earnings of Immigrants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A large literature in sociology concerns the implications of immigrants’ participation in ethnic enclaves for their economic
and social well-being. The “enclave thesis” speculates that immigrants benefit from working in ethnic enclaves. Previous research
concerning the effects of enclave participation on immigrants’ economic outcomes has come to mixed conclusions as to whether
enclave effects are positive or negative. In this article, we seek to extend and improve upon past work by formulating testable
hypotheses based on the enclave thesis and testing them with data from the 2003 New Immigrant Survey (NIS), employing both
residence-based and workplace-based measures of the ethnic enclave. We compare the economic outcomes of immigrants working
in ethnic enclaves with those of immigrants working in the mainstream economy. Our research yields minimal support for the
enclave thesis. Our results further indicate that for some immigrant groups, ethnic enclave participation actually has a negative
effect on economic outcomes. 相似文献

The paper examines ethnic differences in the social and economic well-being of the immigrant aged in Australia and the factors
affecting older immigrants’ well-being as measured by a number of indicators. The data analysis is guided by the concept of
the ‘Third Age’ as the basis for a more positive approach to the discussion of ageing and as a life-cycle stage of independent
living in old age, focusing on the pursuit of an active retirement and the absence of core activity restrictions. Data from
the 2006 population census on living arrangements, need for assistance with daily activities, income, participation in paid
work and volunteering, and provision of care to other family members are used to examine the social and economic well-being
of the immigrant population aged 65 and over identified by their country or region of origin and in comparison with the Australian-born
aged. Policy implications of the research findings are discussed. 相似文献

Our study used multilevel regression analysis to identify individual- and neighbourhood-level factors that determine individual-level
subjective well-being in Rhini, a deprived suburb of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Townsend
index and Gini coefficient were used to investigate whether contextual neighbourhood-level differences in socioeconomic status
determined individual-level subjective well-being. Crime experience, health status, social capital, and demographic variables
were assessed at the individual level. The indicators of subjective well-being were estimated with a two-level random-intercepts
and fixed slopes model. Social capital, health and marital status (all p < .001), followed by income level (p < .01) and the Townsend score (p < .05) were significantly related to individual-level subjective well-being outcomes. Our findings showed that individual-level
subjective well-being is influenced by neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status as measured by the Townsend deprivation score.
Individuals reported higher levels of subjective well-being in less deprived neighbourhoods. Here we wish to highlight the
role of context for subjective well-being, and to suggest that subjective well-being outcomes may also be defined in ecological
terms. We hope the findings are useful for implementing programs and interventions designed to achieve greater subjective
well-being for people living in deprived areas. 相似文献

This study explored the health care service needs and the major correlates of quality of life among 127 community-dwelling
elderly Chinese immigrants in a western Canadian city. Participants were interviewed in their homes by trained, bilingual
interviewers employing a structured questionnaire that covered a wide range of topics including health care service needs,
living arrangements, health status, social network, life satisfaction, and socio-demographic information. Results demonstrated
that ethnic nursing homes, senior centres that provide programs and services, and homemaker services were respondents’ major
service needs. Multiple ordinary least-squares regression analysis revealed that respondents who emigrated from Mainland China
and those who exhibited greater psychological well-being, reported being physically more mobile, perceived fewer service needs,
and expressed satisfaction with the quality of their neighbourhood demonstrated higher levels of life satisfaction. 相似文献

Well-Being and Social Capital: Does Suicide Pose a Puzzle? 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
John F. Helliwell 《Social indicators research》2007,81(3):455-496
This paper has a double purpose: to see how well Durkheim’s [1897, Le Suicide (Paris: 1e edition)] findings apply a century later, and to see if the beneficial effects of social capital on suicide prevention are
parallel to those already found for subjective well-being (Helliwell 2003, Economic Modelling 20(2), pp. 331–360). The results
show that more social capital and higher levels of trust are associated with lower national suicide rates, just as they are
associated with higher levels of subjective well-being. Furthermore, there is a strong negative correlation between national
average suicide rates and measures of life satisfaction. Thus social capital does appear to improve well-being, whether measured
by higher average values of life satisfaction or by lower average suicide rates. There is a slight asymmetry, since the very
high Scandinavian measures of subjective well-being are not matched by equally low suicide rates. To take the Swedish case
as an example, this asymmetry is explained by Sweden having particularly high values of variables that have more weight in
explaining life satisfaction than suicide (especially quality of government), and less beneficial values of variables that
have more influence in explaining suicide rates (Swedes have low belief in God and high divorce rates), because with the latest
data and models the Swedish data fit the well-being and suicide equations with only tiny errors. If the international suicide
data pose a puzzle, it is more because suicide rates, and their estimated equations, differ greatly by gender, while life
satisfaction and its explanations are similar for men and women. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to explore the relationship between subjective economic status and indicators of successful aging
to life satisfaction trajectories among the elderly in Taiwan. Data were from the four waves of “Survey of Health and Living
Status of the Elderly in Taiwan”. Hierarchical linear modeling was conducted. Subjective economic status was measured by childhood
economic status and time-varying economic satisfaction. Time-varying physical, mental, and social successful aging variables
and demographics were also used to describe the trajectory of life satisfaction. Life satisfaction showed a slightly decreasing
but generally stationary trend across time. The concurrent economic satisfaction was associated with life satisfaction trajectory,
but childhood economic status was not significant. The time-varying depressive symptoms, cognitive function and social support
were related to the life satisfaction trajectory. Policy on the elderly should take particular account of the economic security,
mental health, and social support of the elderly. 相似文献

Based on data from a 1999 and a 2008 European Values Survey, the main objective of this study is to explore the relationship between a variety of social capital indicators, satisfaction with government and democracy, and subjective well-being. Happiness and life satisfaction were used as outcome measures of subjective well-being. The indicators of social capital used in this study are general trust, trust in institutions, political engagement, concern for others, societal norms, and membership in volunteer organizations. The analyses reveal a significant increase in happiness, life satisfaction, and many social capital variables between 1999 and 2008. Generalized trust, trust in institutions, government satisfaction, and democracy satisfaction are positive correlates of well-being, although some relationships are significant only in 2008. Several demographic variables are also linked with subjective well-being such as income, employment status, age, gender, and education. We discuss the findings in relation to the significant societal, economic, and political changes experienced in Turkey between 1999 and 2008. Policy implications are also emphasized such as improved trust among individuals, trustworthiness of government institutions, and functioning of democracy. 相似文献

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is one of the most widely used scales for the measurement of subjective well-being
across the globe, but no satisfactory version exists for use among Malay-speaking populations. The present study reports on
the translation of a new Malay SWLS and examines its psychometric properties in a community sample of 816 Malay and 738 Chinese
participants from Malaysia. Results showed that the Malay SWLS had good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.83). Confirmatory
factor analysis showed support for a unidimensional factor structure which remained invariant across sex and ethnic group.
These results suggest that the Malay SWLS is a valid and reliable measure of life satisfaction for Malay-speaking samples,
and extends the list of available scales for measuring subjective well-being among such groups. 相似文献

This paper addresses a number of key challenges in current subjective well-being (SWB) research: A new wave of studies should
take into account that different things may make different people happy, thus going beyond a unitary ‘happiness formula’.
Furthermore, empirical results need to be connected to broader theoretical narratives. Using a re-examination of the social
context of well-being as its case study, this article therefore resorts to sociological theory and fills a gap by investigating
how social capital is correlated in different ways with the SWB of men, women, parents, and non-parents. Ordered logit and
OLS regression analyses systematically examine slope heterogeneity using UK data from the European Social Survey. It turns
out that civic engagement is not at all associated with higher life satisfaction for mothers, while the relationship is positive
for men and strongest for childless women. Moreover, informal socialising is positively and more strongly associated with
life satisfaction among women, although only when OLS is used. In sum, the social context of well-being varies considerably
by gender and parental status. Mothers do not seem to benefit from formal social capital, indicating a “motherhood penalty”
(see Correll et al., Am J Sociol 112(5):1297–1338 in 2007) regarding the psychological rewards usually associated with volunteering. Given the high levels of formal social capital
among mothers, the findings also highlight the importance of the homo sociologicus concept. Consequently, SWB research can
be successfully used to provide new insights into long-standing interdisciplinary theory debates such as the one on homo economicus
versus homo sociologicus. 相似文献

Mental Health of Parents and Life Satisfaction of Children: A Within-Family Analysis of Intergenerational Transmission of Well-Being 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper addresses the extent to which there is an intergenerational transmission of mental health and subjective well-being
within families. Specifically it asks whether parents’ own mental distress influences their child’s life satisfaction, and
vice versa. Whilst the evidence on daily contagion of stress and strain between members of the same family is substantial,
the evidence on the transmission between parental distress and children’s well-being over a longer period of time is sparse.
We tested this idea by examining the within-family transmission of mental distress from parent to child’s life satisfaction,
and vice versa, using rich longitudinal data on 1,175 British youths. Results show that parental distress at year t − 1 is an important determinant of child’s life satisfaction in the current year. This is true for boys and girls, although
boys do not appear to be affected by maternal distress levels. The results also indicated that the child’s own life satisfaction
is related with their father’s distress levels in the following year, regardless of the gender of the child. Finally, we examined
whether the underlying transmission correlation is due to shared social environment, empathic reactions, or transmission via
parent–child interaction. 相似文献

This study deals with the impact of socioeconomic conditions and social integration into a local neighborhood on individual
life satisfaction in Germany. While the majority of ecological studies to date are based on very broad neighborhood concepts,
using large research units for defining neighborhood the present study contains micro-geographic information on a representative
sample of private households in Germany, including features of their respective residential environments. The data was derived
from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) study and enriched with data from the Micromarketing-Systeme and Consult GmbH
(microm) for the years 2000–2006. Our analyses reveal neighborhood effects on various facets of life satisfaction. Controlling
for several covariates at the household and individual level, life satisfaction increases when a person lives in a neighborhood
with a higher socioeconomic status. In addition, the individual gap between a person’s economic status and the status of the
neighborhood also affects individual well-being. However, when comparing with other neighborhood aspects, the strongest effects
on individual life satisfaction have social networks. 相似文献

Most studies that explore the impact of relative standing on subjective well-being use objective measures of the individual’s
relative position, such as the mean income of the reference group or the individual’s ranking in the relevant income distribution.
In this paper, using a new household survey from South Africa, we are able to derive subjective measures of relative standing,
as information is collected on individuals’ perceptions of where they rank in the income distribution. We find considerable differences between objective and subjective measures
of an individual’s relative ranking. Furthermore, our results suggest that an individual’s perceived relative status has a
significantly larger effect on subjective well-being than objective measures of relative status based on reported income.
We also examine the effects on subjective well-being of how individuals perceive their relative position in the income distribution
to have changed since childhood, and what they expect their relative position to be in the future. We find that future upward
mobility has a smaller effect than upward mobility compared to one’s past, suggesting that life satisfaction is influenced
more by what has been achieved than by anticipated achievements. 相似文献

Objectives: The aim of this study was to see if earlier findings about factors associated with well-being could be replicated in a large
population-based sample in Sweden. To the best of our knowledge, no research on well-being has been conducted on such a large
population in a country, which by most standards is regarded as one of the most fortunate in the world. With its economic
wealth and highly developed social welfare and health care system, Sweden is a country where the conditions for a high level
of well-being would appear to be met. Methods: 10,441 randomly selected Swedish citizens, aged between 20 and 64 years, living in Stockholm County, completed a questionnaire
covering issues such as demographics, social network and psychological well-being. The data were collected during the years
1998–2000. Results: Male gender, greater age, cohabiting, good childhood conditions, support from friends, sound financial situation and absence
of negative life events were positively associated with well-being and explained 20% of the variance. Conclusion: The findings replicated earlier studies. Factors associated with well-being seem to remain the same, and are still explaining
only a small part of the total variance, despite different measurements, time, sample sizes or country of origin. Therefore,
research on well-being needs to take a new turn, by placing less focus on external factors and more focus on the internal
factors, such as a person’s personality and coping strategies. 相似文献

Subjective well-being has increasingly been used as a key indicator of quality of life in older people. Existing evidence
shows that it is likely that eastern cultures carry different life values and so the Chinese Aging Well Profile was devised
for measuring subjective well-being in Chinese adults (50+). Data was collected from 1,906 community-dwelling Chinese (50+)
in Taiwan in six sequential stages, involving qualitative interviews and psychometric testing. Seven key dimensions of subjective
well-being identified in the interviews provided an item bank for instrument construction. The 31-item Chinese Aging Well
Profile comprised seven subscales–’physical’, ‘psychological’, ‘independence’, ‘learning & growth’, ‘material’, ‘environmental’,
and ‘social’ well-being. The study indicated that elements of subjective well-being are common across western and eastern
cultures but are interpreted and weighted differently. This new instrument has demonstrated preliminary evidence for reliability
and validity and that it is suitable for use in the Chinese speaking older population. 相似文献

Situated in the dynamic institutional environment of China's transitional economy, this study investigates the intricate relationships among economic inequality, status perceptions, and subjective well-being. Empirical evidence is drawn from national survey data collected from urban China. Statistical analyses show that multiple indicators of economic well-being exert a significant effect on self-perceived social status and status change and on subjective well-being. Positive status perceptions further enhance one's subjective well-being. Some of these effects are also moderated by contextual inequality. This study advances the literature by moving beyond income-based measures to examine the consequences of economic disparity. It also shows that status perceptions are the key nexus to probe the impacts of economic well-being and the sources of life satisfaction. Findings further direct our attention to important interplays between the individual-level socioeconomic conditions and the contextual inequality in achieving a deeper understanding of the consequences of socioeconomic inequality. 相似文献

The Quality of Life in China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Asia Barometer Survey of 2,000 respondents reveals that substantial majorities of the Chinese people experience feelings
of happiness, enjoyment, and accomplishment. In fact, the proportion experiencing these indicators of a high quality of life
are larger in China than in some more prosperous countries. Favorable historical comparison, sustained high economic growth,
satisfaction with interpersonal life, and a high percentage of married people are among the explanations for China’s prevalence
of subjective well-being. The Chinese people’s high levels of satisfaction with their interpersonal, material, and nonmaterial
life domains, their positive assessments of their relative living standards, and their high rate of marriage are three direct
positive influences on subjective well-being. Value priorities and other demographic characteristics also have indirect bearings
on subjective well-being in China. 相似文献

South Africa has one of the highest inequality levels in the world. In 1993, nearly half of the population were considered
poor. These poverty and inequality levels were and still are a legacy of South Africa’s colonial and apartheid past. Since
the end of apartheid, there has been a strong governmental effort to combat poverty and in this light a ‘social indicators
movement’ has emerged. The aim of this article is to contribute to the South African social indicators research in three ways:
Firstly, this article introduces ethnicity as a unit of analysis in the context of poverty and well-being. It is argued that
racial categorisations are not justifiable and in the case of South Africa hide valuable insights. The results of an exploratory
analysis suggest that ethnicity allows a more insightful analysis of poverty and well-being than race. Secondly, this article
introduces a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in the context of subjective well-being research. Many studies regarding
subjective well-being in South Africa use ordered probit regression models. It is argued here that these models are based
on false assumptions and that a MCA can be seen as a suitable alternative since it constitutes an assumption free model. Lastly,
the insights gained from the exploratory analysis are discussed. The MCA seems to show that subjective well-being can be regarded
as an outcome measure. Furthermore, it is argued that there are cultural differences (between the ethnic groups) regarding
subjective well-being. It seems that the ethnic groups in South Africa have different conceptions of well-being and that different
factors influence their subjective well-being assessments.
This work is partly based on a Master thesis from 2004 at the Institute for Development Policy and Management at the University
of Manchester. I am grateful for the intellectual guidance, the constant support and encouragement by Wendy Olsen and for
the comments on earlier drafts from Peter Edward, David A. Clark and two anonymous reviewers. 相似文献

In the context of decades of successful economic reforms in Ghana, this study investigates whether ethnicity influences economic
well-being (perceived and actual) among Ghanaians at the micro-level. Drawing on Afro-barometer 2008 data, the authors employs
logistic and multiple regression techniques to explore the relative effect of ethnicity on economic well-being. Results demonstrate
that ethnicity is an important determinant of both measures of people’s economic well-being (perceived and actual) in Ghana.
Ethnicity tends to have both negative and positive effect on economic well-being among different ethnic groups and different
sub-sample. For instance, for three ethnic groups (Akans, Ga-Adangbes and Ewe/Anglo), ethnicity predicts lower level of economic
well-being for rural residents, whereas for Akans, it minimizes the risk of deprivation in the urban setting. Findings from
this study do not support the idea that ethnicity may be less relevant in shaping people’s well-being in an era of economic
reforms in a society like that of Ghana. Detailed policy implications of the study are discussed emphasizing the need to develop
ethnic-specific development programs to complement the on-going reforms as part of the country’s decentralization efforts. 相似文献

This paper investigates the influence of the economic, social, and cultural variables on life satisfaction in Asia and Europe.
The second section sets a unifying theoretical framework for all three domains by defining life satisfaction as a function
of aspirations and expectations which in turn are affected by micro- and macro-level variables. On the micro-level, economic
capital is a resource for the actor. On the macro-level, societal economic capital improves the opportunity structure for
the individual under certain conditions. Thus, economic capital on both levels positively affects the perceived chances of
fulfilling aspirations. As long as the latter remain unchanged life satisfaction will increase. Social and cultural factors
partially follow the same logic, as indicated by the terms social and cultural capital. Under a set of assumptions, the hypotheses
derived are that personal and societal economic capital, national pride and national integration, religiosity, and societal
religious integration, all positively affect the life satisfaction of the individual. A multi-level analysis of data from
the European Values Study and the AsiaBarometer confirms the micro-level hypotheses. The economic macro-level indicators also
display the theoretically expected positive effect on life satisfaction in the multivariate analysis of Asian and European
data. By contrast, the direct cross-level effects of a society’s national integration and particularly of religion do not
become significant in Europe, yet they are highly significant in Asia. This strong influence of the social and cultural context
in Asia can be interpreted in two different ways. 相似文献

Subjective Well-Being in Mental Health and Human Development Research Worldwide: An Introduction 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Corey L. M. Keyes 《Social indicators research》2006,77(1):1-10
In this introduction to a special issue, the author suggests that a third generation of research on subjective well-being
has emerged that is focused on health and human development as the presence of well-being (i.e., health) and not merely the
absence of illness, disease, and developmental deficiencies. In turn, this article describes the construct of subjective well-being,
its historical ties to the aftermath of World War II and the creation of the National Institute of Mental Health, its conceptual
foundations, and empirical evidence supporting the view that it consists of two theoretical traditions – hedonia and eudaimonia.
The nearly 50 years of research on subjective well-being has yielded as many as 13 distinct dimensions of subjective well-being
in the United States. Consequently, new directions in subjective well-being are emerging such as the study of mental health
as a complete state, which suggest the need for greater scientific attention to the integration of hedonic and eudaimonic
measures and theory. 相似文献
