The Mentally Retarded: Towards a National Programme

It is only recently that there has been national consideration of the problems and needs of the mentally retarded. Voluntary, state and federal programmes are gradually being more effectively coordinated but a good deal remains to be done. The measures that could be taken to further this process include: the establishment of a national institute on mental retardation; a select committee of the parliament to examine problems of the mentally retarded; a standing interdepartmental committee with more precise terms of reference concerning mental retardation; and action to assist in employment for the mentally retarded with the commonwealth.     

Family Visiting with Institutionalized Mentally Impaired Aged

The nature and frequency of interaction between 43 mentally impaired aged residents in a long term care facility and their relatives was studied. It was found that in most cases the frequency of visiting remained stable over time, and in addition, the relatives combined visiting with other tasks-gift giving, assistance with grooming, etc.-on behalf of their family members. The artice includes recommendations for institutional staff help to these relatives as they cope with the continuing decline of the aged person.

The Mentally Handicapped and Their Professional Helpers

Summary This article discusses visits paid to fifty-three families witha severely mentally handicapped adult living at home, most ofwhom were also quite severely disabled physically. Varying reactionsto the services offered by general practitioners and mentalwelfare officers are described and those factors influencingthe generally poor opinion of mental welfare officers' servicesare discussed. The importance of the daily routine of the familiesis emphasized and the difficulty of the mental welfare servicein providing services or practical assistance which helps withthe daily routine. Finally it is suggested that the social servicesshould see a greater part of their work as helping and enablingthe community to do better, and with less strain, the caringit does already and that this means that the planning of servicesneeds to start from the locality in which the handicapped personlives

Are Terrorists Mentally Deranged?

Recent terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon have accentuated the threat of terrorism. However, it appears that the attackers are popularly thought of as mentally deranged individuals who are evil. This article suggests that such an understanding is a misperception of these people and may interfere with an adequate response to prevent future attacks. The article reviews the extant literature on psychological theories of terrorism and concludes that terrorists are not dysfunctional or pathological; rather, it suggests that terrorism is basically another form of politically motivated violence that is perpetrated by rational, lucid people who have valid motives. The only real difference between terrorism and conventional military action is one of strategy. Terrorists lack the necessary resources to wage war in furtherance of their political goals.     

Housing the Homeless Mentally Ill

This paper presents the housing outcomes from an assertive case management program for the homeless mentally ill. The program was evaluated using an experimental design. Qualifying clients in a state hospital were randomly assigned to the case management program or routine services. At six month follow-up, over twice as many experimental as control clients were housed. None of the experimental clients had returned to living on the streets or in shelters     

Support Groups for Mentally Ill People

This paper outlines demand levels for day care for the mentally ill and explores the contribution that support groups can make within the package of care. It outlines costings and results of one particular experimental low cost venture which involved public and voluntary sector cooperation.     

Knowledge of Community Services Amongst The Aged

Knowledge of community services is clearly an important determinant of their use by the frail or disabled elderly. This paper describes the levels of knowledge amongst the aged in Sydney concerning such services, and explores the pathways by which information is disseminated. Awareness of community services was quite limited amongst the sample studied. The data suggest that many of the elderly may be inadequately informed of services which could serve as alternatives to institutional care.     

The Social Environment--A Model for Exploring Service Interventions with Mentally Handicapped Adults

Moving The Mentally Ill Into The Community: The Problem Of Acceptance And The Effect Of Contact

Community acceptance of the mentally ill is fundamental to a successful change to community-based care, now being implemented in New South Wales. This policy was based on an inquiry that viewed acceptance optimistically and postulated that contact with the mentally ill would be a favourable influence. The applicability of this extension of the ‘contact hypothesis’ from its original racial context is tested in one area of Sydney. The results indicate that the type of contact arising from community mental health facilities is not an effective catalyst of relevant attitude change, and suggest particular difficulties among the lower two socioeconomic classes.

Human Relatedness and the Mentally Impaired Older Person

This article explores some of the assumptions about the organically impaired elderly thmugh describing an effective summer day program, studying one of its panicipants, and relating a theoretical penpective. It discusses the helping principles applied in a life model and intenctionally oriented group and milieu approach. A sense of self is restored thmugh relationships with others. The provision of a positive experience which recognizes and bolsters stlengths and relatedness makes it more attractive to live more fully here and now.
