If the amount of information contained in a r.v is greater than that contained in another r.v for one measure of information, it seems reasonable to require that this relation remains true for any other valid measure. In this paper we investigate divergence and Fisher-type measures of information with respect to this property which is due to Shiva, Ahmed and Georganas (1973). It is shown that the property is satisfied only for a certain region of values of the parameter (order) a of the measures of information.  相似文献

This work characterizes the dispersion of some popular random probability measures, including the bootstrap, the Bayesian bootstrap, and the Pólya tree prior. This dispersion is measured in terms of the variation of the Kullback–Leibler divergence of a random draw from the process to that of its baseline centring measure. By providing a quantitative expression of this dispersion around the baseline distribution, our work provides insight for comparing different parameterizations of the models and for the setting of prior parameters in applied Bayesian settings. This highlights some limitations of the existing canonical choice of parameter settings in the Pólya tree process.  相似文献

In this paper, a semi‐parametric single‐index model is investigated. The link function is allowed to be unbounded and has unbounded support that answers a pending issue in the literature. Meanwhile, the link function is treated as a point in an infinitely many dimensional function space which enables us to derive the estimates for the index parameter and the link function simultaneously. This approach is different from the profile method commonly used in the literature. The estimator is derived from an optimisation with the constraint of identification condition for the index parameter, which addresses an important problem in the literature of single‐index models. In addition, making use of a property of Hermite orthogonal polynomials, an explicit estimator for the index parameter is obtained. Asymptotic properties for the two estimators of the index parameter are established. Their efficiency is discussed in some special cases as well. The finite sample properties of the two estimates are demonstrated through an extensive Monte Carlo study and an empirical example.  相似文献

We introduce estimation and test procedures through divergence minimization for models satisfying linear constraints with unknown parameter. These procedures extend the empirical likelihood (EL) method and share common features with generalized empirical likelihood approach. We treat the problems of existence and characterization of the divergence projections of probability distributions on sets of signed finite measures. We give a precise characterization of duality, for the proposed class of estimates and test statistics, which is used to derive their limiting distributions (including the EL estimate and the EL ratio statistic) both under the null hypotheses and under alternatives or misspecification. An approximation to the power function is deduced as well as the sample size which ensures a desired power for a given alternative.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a modified skew-normal (SN) model that contains the normal model as a special case. Unlike the usual SN model, the Fisher information matrix of the proposed model is always non-singular. Despite of this desirable property for the regular asymptotic inference, as with the SN model, in the considered model the divergence of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the skewness parameter may occur with positive probability in samples with moderate sizes. As a solution to this problem, a modified score function is used for the estimation of the skewness parameter. It is proved that the modified MLE is always finite. The quasi-likelihood approach is considered to build confidence intervals. When the model includes location and scale parameters, the proposed method is combined with the unmodified maximum likelihood estimates of these parameters.  相似文献

We consider optimal testing procedures for specific models of early and instantaneous failures in reliability studies. These models are typically used to accommodate lifetime data that have a higher concentration of failures near time zero. We show that it is possible to derive uniformly most powerful tests, for testing the mixing parameter in the instantaneous failure model, for general lifetime distributions. A novel procedure to test for early failures, which uses an invariance property of the maximum likelihood estimate of the nuisance parameter, is also presented.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the variable selections for a varying coefficient models with missing response at random. A procedure is presented by basis function approximations with smooth-threshold estimating equations. Furthermore, the proposed method selects significant variables and estimates coefficients simultaneously avoiding the problem of solving a convex optimization, which reduced the burden of computation. Compared to existing equation based approaches, our procedure is more efficient and quick. With proper choices the regularization parameter, the resulting estimates perform an oracle property. A cross-validation for tuning parameter selection is also proposed, a numerical study confirms the performance of the proposed method.  相似文献

Deterministic simulation models are used to guide decision-making and enhance understanding of complex systems such as disease transmission, population dynamics, and tree plantation growth. Bayesian inference about parameters in deterministic simulation models can require the pooling of expert opinion. One class of approaches to pooling expert opinion in this context is supra-Bayesian pooling, in which expert opinion is treated as data for an ultimate decision maker. This article details and compares two supra-Bayesian approaches—“event updating” and “parameter updating.” The suitability of each approach in the context of deterministic simulation models is assessed based on theoretical properties, performance on examples, and the selection and sensitivity of required hyperparameters. In general, we favor a parameter updating approach because it uses more intuitive hyperparameters, it performs sensibly on examples, and because the alternative event updating approach fails to exhibit a desirable property (relative propensity consistency) in all cases. Inference in deterministic simulation models is an increasingly important statistical and practical problem, and supra-Bayesian methods represent one viable option for achieving a sensible pooling of expert opinion.  相似文献

In the expository paper, a sufficient condition is discussed for the almost admissibility of formal Bayes rules in quadratically regular problems. This sufficient condition is equivalent to a recurrence property of a natural symmetric Markov chain constructed from the model and the improper prior. Some simple examples involving translation parameter models illustrate the results.  相似文献

Time-varying coefficient models with autoregressive and moving-average–generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity structure are proposed for examining the time-varying effects of risk factors in longitudinal studies. Compared with existing models in the literature, the proposed models give explicit patterns for the time-varying coefficients. Maximum likelihood and marginal likelihood (based on a Laplace approximation) are used to estimate the parameters in the proposed models. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of these two estimation methods, which is measured in terms of the Kullback–Leibler divergence and the root mean square error. The marginal likelihood approach leads to the more accurate parameter estimates, although it is more computationally intensive. The proposed models are applied to the Framingham Heart Study to investigate the time-varying effects of covariates on coronary heart disease incidence. The Bayesian information criterion is used for specifying the time series structures of the coefficients of the risk factors.  相似文献

Abstract.  We propose and study a class of regression models, in which the mean function is specified parametrically as in the existing regression methods, but the residual distribution is modelled non-parametrically by a kernel estimator, without imposing any assumption on its distribution. This specification is different from the existing semiparametric regression models. The asymptotic properties of such likelihood and the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) under this semiparametric model are studied. We show that under some regularity conditions, the MLE under this model is consistent (when compared with the possibly pseudo-consistency of the parameter estimation under the existing parametric regression model), is asymptotically normal with rate and efficient. The non-parametric pseudo-likelihood ratio has the Wilks property as the true likelihood ratio does. Simulated examples are presented to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed semiparametric MLE method.  相似文献

It has long been asserted that in univariate location-scale models, when concerned with inference for either the location or scale parameter, the use of the inverse of the scale parameter as a Bayesian prior yields posterior credible sets that have exactly the correct frequentist confidence set interpretation. This claim dates to at least Peers, and has subsequently been noted by various authors, with varying degrees of justification. We present a simple, direct demonstration of the exact matching property of the posterior credible sets derived under use of this prior in the univariate location-scale model. This is done by establishing an equivalence between the conditional frequentist and posterior densities of the pivotal quantities on which conditional frequentist inferences are based.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to develop a Bayesian approach for log-Birnbaum–Saunders Student-t regression models under right-censored survival data. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are used to develop a Bayesian procedure for the considered model. In order to attenuate the influence of the outlying observations on the parameter estimates, we present in this paper Birnbaum–Saunders models in which a Student-t distribution is assumed to explain the cumulative damage. Also, some discussions on the model selection to compare the fitted models are given and case deletion influence diagnostics are developed for the joint posterior distribution based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence. The developed procedures are illustrated with a real data set.  相似文献

Model selection criteria are frequently developed by constructing estimators of discrepancy measures that assess the disparity between the 'true' model and a fitted approximating model. The Akaike information criterion (AIC) and its variants result from utilizing Kullback's directed divergence as the targeted discrepancy. The directed divergence is an asymmetric measure of separation between two statistical models, meaning that an alternative directed divergence can be obtained by reversing the roles of the two models in the definition of the measure. The sum of the two directed divergences is Kullback's symmetric divergence. In the framework of linear models, a comparison of the two directed divergences reveals an important distinction between the measures. When used to evaluate fitted approximating models that are improperly specified, the directed divergence which serves as the basis for AIC is more sensitive towards detecting overfitted models, whereas its counterpart is more sensitive towards detecting underfitted models. Since the symmetric divergence combines the information in both measures, it functions as a gauge of model disparity which is arguably more balanced than either of its individual components. With this motivation, the paper proposes a new class of criteria for linear model selection based on targeting the symmetric divergence. The criteria can be regarded as analogues of AIC and two of its variants: 'corrected' AIC or AICc and 'modified' AIC or MAIC. The paper examines the selection tendencies of the new criteria in a simulation study and the results indicate that they perform favourably when compared to their AIC analogues.  相似文献

This article focuses on simulation-based inference for the time-deformation models directed by a duration process. In order to better capture the heavy tail property of the time series of financial asset returns, the innovation of the observation equation is subsequently assumed to have a Student-t distribution. Suitable Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms, which are hybrids of Gibbs and slice samplers, are proposed for estimation of the parameters of these models. In the algorithms, the parameters of the models can be sampled either directly from known distributions or through an efficient slice sampler. The states are simulated one at a time by using a Metropolis-Hastings method, where the proposal distributions are sampled through a slice sampler. Simulation studies conducted in this article suggest that our extended models and accompanying MCMC algorithms work well in terms of parameter estimation and volatility forecast.  相似文献

The failure rate function commonly has a bathtub shape in practice. In this paper we discuss a regression model considering new Weibull extended distribution developed by Xie et al. (2002) that can be used to model this type of failure rate function. Assuming censored data, we discuss parameter estimation: maximum likelihood method and a Bayesian approach where Gibbs algorithms along with Metropolis steps are used to obtain the posterior summaries of interest. We derive the appropriate matrices for assessing the local influence on the parameter estimates under different perturbation schemes, and we also present some ways to perform global influence. Also, some discussions on case deletion influence diagnostics are developed for the joint posterior distribution based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence. Besides, for different parameter settings, sample sizes and censoring percentages, are performed various simulations and display and compare the empirical distribution of the Martingale-type residual with the standard normal distribution. These studies suggest that the residual analysis usually performed in normal linear regression models can be straightforwardly extended to the martingale-type residual in log-Weibull extended models with censored data. Finally, we analyze a real data set under a log-Weibull extended regression model. We perform diagnostic analysis and model check based on the martingale-type residual to select an appropriate model.  相似文献

The common choices of frailty distribution in lifetime data models include the Gamma and Inverse Gaussian distributions. We present diagnostic plots for these distributions when frailty operates in a proportional hazards framework. Firstly, we present plots based on the form of the unconditional survival function when the baseline hazard is assumed to be Weibull. Secondly, we base a plot on a closure property that applies for any baseline hazard, namely, that the frailty distribution among survivors at time t has the same form as the original distribution, with the same shape parameter but different scale parameter. We estimate the shape parameter at different values of t and examine whether it is constant, that is, whether plotted values form a straight line parallel to the time axis. We provide simulation results assuming Weibull baseline hazard and an example to illustrate the methods.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the robust estimation for the order of hidden Markov model (HMM) based on a penalized minimum density power divergence estimator, which is obtained by utilizing the finite mixture marginal distribution of HMM. For this task, we adopt the locally conic parametrization method used in [D. Dacunha-Castelle and E. Gassiate, Testing in locally conic models and application to mixture models. ESAIM Probab. Stat. (1997), pp. 285–317; D. Dacunha-Castelle and E. Gassiate, Testing the order of a model using locally conic parametrization: population mixtures and stationary arma processes, Ann. Statist. 27 (1999), pp. 1178–1209; T. Lee and S. Lee, Robust and consistent estimation of the order of finite mixture models based on the minimizing a density power divergence estimator, Metrika 68 (2008), pp. 365–390] to avoid the difficulties that arise in handling mixture marginal models, such as the non-identifiability of the parameter space and the singularity problem with the asymptotic variance. We verify that the estimated order is consistent and simulation results are provided for illustration.  相似文献

This article considers a probability generating function-based divergence statistic for parameter estimation. The performance and robustness of the proposed statistic in parameter estimation is studied for the negative binomial distribution by Monte Carlo simulation, especially in comparison with the maximum likelihood and minimum Hellinger distance estimation. Numerical examples are given as illustration of goodness of fit.  相似文献
