The paper considers the problem of testing for symmetry (about an unknown centre) of the marginal distribution of a strictly stationary and weakly dependent stochastic process. The possibility of using the autoregressive sieve bootstrap and stationary bootstrap procedures to obtain critical values and P-values for symmetry tests is explored. Bootstrap-assisted tests for symmetry are straightforward to implement and require no prior estimation of asymptotic variances. The small-sample properties of a wide variety of tests are investigated using Monte Carlo experiments. A bootstrap-assisted version of the triples test is found to have the best overall performance.  相似文献

We show that the linear process bootstrap (LPB) and the autoregressive sieve bootstrap (AR sieve) are, in general, not valid for statistics whose large-sample distribution depends on moments of order higher than two, irrespective of whether the data come from a linear time series or not. Inspired by the block-of-blocks bootstrap, we circumvent this non-validity by applying the LPB and AR sieve to suitably blocked data and not to the original data itself. In a simulation study, we compare the LPB, AR sieve, and moving block bootstrap applied directly and to blocked data.  相似文献

We propose a testing procedure for long-horizon predictability via kernel-based nonparametric estimators of long-run covariances between multiperiod returns and persistent covariates. Asymptotic properties of the proposed tests are studied. As for implementation of the test, sieve bootstrap methods are employed to obtain reasonable approximation to the sample distribution of the test statistics. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to verify the theoretical conjecture. Empirical analysis, using US monthly data from 1929 to 2011, are presented for testing stock return predictability of some forecasting financial variables. Long-term interest rates, unlike default spreads or price-earning ration, are found to show some forecasting power.  相似文献

A CONTINUOUSLY ADAPTIVE RANK TEST FOR SHIFT IN LOCATION   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper considers the problem of testing for shift in location when the symmetry of the underlying distribution is in doubt. Various adaptive test procedures have been suggested in the literature; they are mainly based on a preliminary test or measure of asymmetry, and then choosing between the sign or the Wilcoxon tests accordingly. However, as this paper demonstrates, there are some disadvantages with such procedures. This paper develops a test that does not suffer from such disadvantages. The proposed test is based on modifying the Wilcoxon scores according to the evidence of asymmetry of the distribution present in the data as indicated by the magnitude of the P‐value from a preliminary test of symmetry. A simulation study investigates and compares the performance of the proposed test and other known adaptive procedures in terms of power and attainment of the nominal size. The performance of a suitable bootstrap procedure for the situation under consideration is also studied. In most cases under consideration, the proposed test is found to be superior to the other tests.  相似文献

We use meta-analytic procedures to develop new tests for panel cointegration, combining p-values from time-series cointegration tests on the units of the panel. The tests are robust to heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence between the panel units. To achieve the latter, we employ a sieve bootstrap procedure with joint resampling of the units’ residuals. A simulation study shows that the tests can have substantially smaller size distortion than tests ignoring the presence of cross-sectional dependence while preserving high power. We apply the tests to a panel of post-Bretton Woods data to test for weak purchasing power parity.  相似文献

The author addresses the problem of testing circular data for reflective symmetry about an unknown central direction and proposes a simple omnibus test based on the sample second sine moment about an estimation of this direction. Under quite general conditions, for an underlying distribution which is reflectively symmetric, the large‐sample asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is standard normal. Randomization and bootstrap variants of the test are also introduced, and the operating characteristics of different versions of the test are investigated in a Monte Carlo study. The large‐sample and bootstrap versions of the test are applied in the analysis of two illustrative examples drawn from the circular statistics literature.  相似文献

The main contribution of this paper is a proof of the asymptotic validity of the application of the bootstrap to AR(∞) processes with unmodelled conditional heteroskedasticity. We first derive the asymptotic properties of the least-squares estimator of the autoregressive sieve parameters when the data are generated by a stationary linear process with martingale difference errors that are possibly subject to conditional heteroskedasticity of unknown form. These results are then used in establishing that a suitably constructed bootstrap estimator will have the same limit distribution as the least-squares estimator. Our results provide theoretical justification for the use of either the conventional asymptotic approximation based on robust standard errors or the bootstrap approximation of the distribution of autoregressive parameters. A simulation study suggests that the bootstrap approach tends to be more accurate in small samples.  相似文献

A bootstrap algorithm is proposed for testing Gaussianity and linearity in stationary time series, and consistency of the relevant bootstrap approximations is proven rigorously for the first time. Subba Rao and Gabr (1980) and Hinich (1982) have formulated some well-known nonparametric tests for Gaussianity and linearity based on the asymptotic distribution of the normalized bispectrum. The proposed bootstrap procedure gives an alternative way to approximate the finite-sample null distribution of such test statistics. We revisit a modified form of Hinich's test utilizing kernel smoothing, and compare its performance to the bootstrap test on several simulated data sets and two real data sets—the S&P 500 returns and the quarterly US real GNP growth rate. Interestingly, Hinich's test and the proposed bootstrapped version yield substantially different results when testing Gaussianity and linearity of the GNP data.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The score test and the GOF test for the inverse Gaussian distribution, in particular the latter, are known to have large size distortion and hence unreliable power when referring to the asymptotic critical values. We show in this paper that with the appropriately bootstrapped critical values, these tests become second-order accurate, with size distortion being essentially eliminated and power more reliable. Two major generalizations of the score test are made: one is to allow the data to be right-censored, and the other is to allow the existence of covariate effects. A data mapping method is introduced for the bootstrap to be able to produce censored data that are conformable with the null model. Monte Carlo results clearly favour the proposed bootstrap tests. Real data illustrations are given.  相似文献

This paper introduces a nonparametric test of symmetry for ranked-set samples to test the asymmetry of the underlying distribution. The test statistic is constructed from the Cramér-von Mises distance function which measures the distance between two probability models. The null distribution of the test statistic is established by constructing symmetric bootstrap samples from a given ranked-set sample. It is shown that the type I error probabilities are stable across all practical symmetric distributions and the test has high power for asymmetric distributions.  相似文献

This paper assesses the performance of tests for a single structural change at unknown date when regressors are stationary, trending and when they have a break in mean. Size and power of the test procedures are compared in a simulation setup particularly aimed at autoregressive models using their limiting distribution and some bootstrap approximations. The comparisons are performed using graphical methods, namely P value discrepancy plots and size–power curves. The simulation study gives some interesting insights to the test procedures. Indeed, it documents that tests based on the conventional asymptotic distribution are oversized in small samples. The size correction is achieved by some bootstrap methods which appear to possess reasonable size properties. For the power study, the proposed bootstrap method improves on the asymptotic approximations of some tests for heteroskedastic regression errors especially when there is a mean-shift in the regressors. This result has not been found for the case of i.i.d. errors where the bootstrap tests have the same power properties as the tests based on the asymptotic approximations. We finally study the relationship between two monthly US interest rates. The results show that such relationship has been altered by a regime-shift located in May 1981.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate several tests for the hypothesis of a parametric form of the error distribution in the common linear and non‐parametric regression model, which are based on empirical processes of residuals. It is well known that tests in this context are not asymptotically distribution‐free and the parametric bootstrap is applied to deal with this problem. The performance of the resulting bootstrap test is investigated from an asymptotic point of view and by means of a simulation study. The results demonstrate that even for moderate sample sizes the parametric bootstrap provides a reliable and easy accessible solution to the problem of goodness‐of‐fit testing of assumptions regarding the error distribution in linear and non‐parametric regression models.  相似文献

This paper considers the likelihood ratio (LR) tests of stationarity, common trends and cointegration for multivariate time series. As the distribution of these tests is not known, a bootstrap version is proposed via a state- space representation. The bootstrap samples are obtained from the Kalman filter innovations under the null hypothesis. Monte Carlo simulations for the Gaussian univariate random walk plus noise model show that the bootstrap LR test achieves higher power for medium-sized deviations from the null hypothesis than a locally optimal and one-sided Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test that has a known asymptotic distribution. The power gains of the bootstrap LR test are significantly larger for testing the hypothesis of common trends and cointegration in multivariate time series, as the alternative asymptotic procedure – obtained as an extension of the LM test of stationarity – does not possess properties of optimality. Finally, it is shown that the (pseudo-)LR tests maintain good size and power properties also for the non-Gaussian series. An empirical illustration is provided.  相似文献

In this article, we develop new bootstrap-based inference for noncausal autoregressions with heavy-tailed innovations. This class of models is widely used for modeling bubbles and explosive dynamics in economic and financial time series. In the noncausal, heavy-tail framework, a major drawback of asymptotic inference is that it is not feasible in practice as the relevant limiting distributions depend crucially on the (unknown) decay rate of the tails of the distribution of the innovations. In addition, even in the unrealistic case where the tail behavior is known, asymptotic inference may suffer from small-sample issues. To overcome these difficulties, we propose bootstrap inference procedures using parameter estimates obtained with the null hypothesis imposed (the so-called restricted bootstrap). We discuss three different choices of bootstrap innovations: wild bootstrap, based on Rademacher errors; permutation bootstrap; a combination of the two (“permutation wild bootstrap”). Crucially, implementation of these bootstraps do not require any a priori knowledge about the distribution of the innovations, such as the tail index or the convergence rates of the estimators. We establish sufficient conditions ensuring that, under the null hypothesis, the bootstrap statistics estimate consistently particular conditionaldistributions of the original statistics. In particular, we show that validity of the permutation bootstrap holds without any restrictions on the distribution of the innovations, while the permutation wild and the standard wild bootstraps require further assumptions such as symmetry of the innovation distribution. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations show that the finite sample performance of the proposed bootstrap tests is exceptionally good, both in terms of size and of empirical rejection probabilities under the alternative hypothesis. We conclude by applying the proposed bootstrap inference to Bitcoin/USD exchange rates and to crude oil price data. We find that indeed noncausal models with heavy-tailed innovations are able to fit the data, also in periods of bubble dynamics.

The present study investigates the performance of Johnson's transformation trimmed t statistic, Welch's t test, Yuen's trimmed t , Johnson's transformation untrimmed t test, and the corresponding bootstrap methods for the two-sample case with small/unequal sample sizes when the distribution is non-normal and variances are heterogeneous. The Monte Carlo simulation is conducted in two-sided as well as one-sided tests. When the variance is proportional to the sample size, Yuen's trimmed t is as good as Johnson's transformation trimmed t . However, when the variance is disproportional to the sample size, the bootstrap Yuen's trimmed t and the bootstrap Johnson's transformation trimmed t are recommended in one-sided tests. For two-sided tests, Johnson's transformation trimmed t is not only valid but also powerful in comparison to the bootstrap methods.  相似文献

The paper considers the goodness of fit tests with right censored data or doubly censored data. The Fredholm Integral Equation (FIE) method proposed by Ren (1993) is implemented in the simulation studies to estimate the null distribution of the Cramér-von Mises test statistics and the asymptotic covariance function of the self-consistent estimator for the lifetime distribution with right censored data or doubly censored data. We show that for fixed alternatives, the bootstrap method does not estimate the null distribution consistently for doubly censored data. For the right censored case, a comparison between the performance of FIE and the η out of η bootstrap shows that FIE gives better estimation for the null distribution. The application of FIE to a set of right censored Channing House data and to a set of doubly censored breast cancer data is presented.  相似文献

In linear and nonparametric regression models, the problem of testing for symmetry of the distribution of errors is considered. We propose a test statistic which utilizes the empirical characteristic function of the corresponding residuals. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic as well as its behavior under alternatives is investigated. A simulation study compares bootstrap versions of the proposed test to other more standard procedures.  相似文献

Permutation tests for symmetry are suggested using data that are subject to right censoring. Such tests are directly relevant to the assumptions that underlie the generalized Wilcoxon test since the symmetric logistic distribution for log-errors has been used to motivate Wilcoxon scores in the censored accelerated failure time model. Its principal competitor is the log-rank (LGR) test motivated by an extreme value error distribution that is positively skewed. The proposed one-sided tests for symmetry against the alternative of positive skewness are directly relevant to the choice between usage of these two tests.

The permutation tests use statistics from the weighted LGR class normally used for making two-sample comparisons. From this class, the test using LGR weights (all weights equal) showed the greatest discriminatory power in simulations that compared the possibility of logistic errors versus extreme value errors.

In the test construction, a median estimate, determined by inverting the Kaplan–Meier estimator, is used to divide the data into a “control” group to its left that is compared with a “treatment” group to its right. As an unavoidable consequence of testing symmetry, data in the control group that have been censored become uninformative in performing this two-sample test. Thus, early heavy censoring of data can reduce the effective sample size of the control group and result in diminished power for discriminating symmetry in the population distribution.  相似文献
