Summary A second mathematical model describing the species-area relation was proposed for continuous expanding of sample area. This model is expressed asS=λ ln(1+x/E) whereS is the number of species occurring in an areax, and λ andE are the constants termedspecific diversity andelemental area respectively. As a result of testing the validity of the model for several sets of data, it was shown that the above equation would provide an adequate fit to a group of species belonging to a single synusia which exists in an open habitat. The ecological implications of parameters involved were discussed and the characteristic area presented previously (Kobayashi, 1974) was defined in terms ofE. The relation between results obtained by discrete sampling and continuous sampling was examined and the possibility of converting one to another was suggested. This paper applies the Perspectivist conception to the issue of sustainable development in such a way as to make perspicuous two competing views on the issue. These views, here termed theeconomic and theecological, are respectively that of the United Nation's Brundtland Commission, which favours economic growth as a means of overcoming the world's environmental problems, and an alternative view, according to which environmental problems must be dealt with directly, and economic growth may well be a hindrance to their solution. Summary Based on the results of five-year study on theNezara population, it was concluded that the level of abundance of the insect was determined partly by the combination and relative adundance of the host plants and partly by the climatic factors. The endless increase of the population was checked by the deleterious effects associated with the overpopulation which occurred locally. The degree of such overpopulation was determined by the relative abundance of host plants to the current level of the population. Therefore, even when the general level ofNezara population seemed to be low, there still exists the possibility of overpopulation in some areas. Winter was the critical period which threatened the persistence ofNezara population. The survival of the hibernating adults was partly dependent on the physiological state of adults which was determined in the period of pre-hibernation. But when the severity of a winter exceeded the tolerance limit of the insect, the only safety-valve which prevented the elimination ofNezara was the heterogeneity of hibernacula. Therefore,Milne's theory (1957) was closest to the known facts.  相似文献

Summary Resource exploitation by and intraspecific competition in larvae ofGastrophysa atrocyanea andGalerucella vittaticollis were investigated in field and laboratory experiments. Larvae of both species frequently suffered from food shortages in the field. WhenG. atrocyanea larvae suffered from a food shortage, severe intraspecific competition occurred because of lack of predation and parasitism. This exploitive competition was caused by a local food shortage of the host plant. Individuals survived by fast exploitation when food became abundant (contest type competition). TheG. atrocyanea larvae were wasteful of the food resource, and no mechanism by which to economize on the utilization of the resource was acquired because of their exploitation of the abundant resource. In contrast, theG. vittaticollis population probably is regulated by extrinsic factors such as predation and parasitism. Those larvae grew into smaller adults than those ofG. atrocyanea under a food shortage, so that their wasted food consumption was lower than that ofG. atrocyanea. Although intraspecific competition was similar to that forG. atrocyanea, it was not as severe. The food forG. vittaticollis was apt to be appropriated by other wasteful exploitators such asG. atrocyanea, which was superior in resource exploitation; thereforeG. vittaticollis frequently suffered a food shortage. Consequently selection in relation to tolerance to starvation became more acute forG. vittaticollis than forG. atrocyanea, and individuals ofG. vittaticollis that could endure starvation better may have been selected.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

While mobilities studies have often drawn on postcolonial theory, few studies draw on the unique contributions of postcolonial literature. This article charts new directions for mobilities studies and postcolonial literature through an analysis of Mohsin Hamid’s 2017 novel Exit West. The novel shows how the ‘new mobilities paradigm’ could be usefully extended by paying more attention to migration as an expression of the way that mobility and immobility exist in complex relation to one another, especially with regard to the affective and existential experiences of waiting that persist even after arrival. I suggest that contemporary fiction, such as Exit West, interacts with and shapes cultural imaginaries around mobilities and migrancy; Hamid’s use of irrealist and fantastic modes challenges readers to entertain normative claims about the world. In addition to outlining the potential contributions of postcolonial fiction to mobilities studies, I conclude with an overview of the new directions that mobilities studies offer for postcolonial studies as well.  相似文献

In this study, the family sizes of Chinese, Japanese and Filipino Americans are compared with those of whites, using data from the 1970 public use samples for California and Hawaii. The two hypotheses derived from the ‘minority status’ hypothesis are tested; the latter states that minorities experience tensions and anxiety which lead to lower fertility compared with native whites of Anglo-Saxon ancestry under certain conditions. We also examine the effect of assimilation in terms of variables known to affect fertility, and control for several age and acculturation variables.

Analysis, based on a regression decomposition model, gives some support to the argument that the family size of minority groups differs from that of native whites because of incomplete assimilation and because independent variables affect fertility differently. However, since the independent effect of minority status per se is generally to raise fertility for Japanese and Chinese Americans, and lower it for Filipinos, we reject this version of the minority status hypothesis. Our general conclusion is that family size differentials in a pluralistic society may be part of a persisting pattern of sub-cultural differentiation, and do not necessarily reflect any ‘tensions and anxiety’ of minority status.  相似文献

Summary It has been theoretically assumed that the population density at the equilibrium oscillates with damping from generation to generation. In the adult population of the southern cowpea weevil,Callosobruchus maculatus, it was exemplified. But, it was not so clear in the adult population of the azuki bean weevil,C. chinensis as seen in that ofC. maculatus. This difference seems to be due to the scramble type of competition that occurs in larval stage inC. maculatus, instead of in the egg stage asC. chinensis. Comparing with the oscillation from generation to generation obtained in the present experiment to that ofLucilia population found byNicholson, the oscillation inLucilia population is composed of the cycle in a generation and the descending phase of each cycle of it is not regulated density-dependently. In 2004, at a time when the nation was experiencing the lowest fertility trends in its history, the Australian Federal Government introduced the offer of a cash payment of 3,000 to all women on the birth of a new baby. The maternity payment, commonly known as the baby bonus, was increased to3,000 to all women on the birth of a new baby. The maternity payment, commonly known as the baby bonus, was increased to 4,000 in 2006 and to $5,000 in 2008. While not explicitly declared a pronatalist policy at the time of its introduction, the baby bonus was later credited with helping to halt the decline of the nation’s aggregate birth rates. This paper examines the effect of this policy on Australian women’s childbearing intentions from 2001 to 2008, using panel data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics (HILDA) Survey. The results indicate that the introduction of the baby bonus coincided with a statistically significant increase in women’s childbearing intentions. More specifically, the strongest increase occurred among women from lower-income households, potentially implying that the policy had the strongest effect on women who, given their current characteristics, are relatively likely to be reliant on welfare assistance to raise their children over the long term. The inferences drawn from the paper’s findings raise concern over the capacity of the baby bonus policy to reduce aggregate dependency rates.  相似文献

Summary We studied the interpecific competition between 2 species of predatory aquatic bugs,Diplonychus japonicus andD. major by conducting a field experiment. We set up 3 types of experimental plots in the paddy fields whereD. major predominated. The two plots contained single species of eitherD. japonicus orD. major, respectively, and one plot had both species in equal number. We compared the development and the reproductive performance between plots in each species. InD. japonicus, the number of eggs and early instar nymphs were significantly smaller in the plots containing both species than in the monospecific plots. However, the numbers of late instar nymphs and newly emerged adults were not significantly different between plots. The proportions of starved nymphs in both plots were larger than those in theD. japonicus's natural habitats. The final densities of adults in both plots were lower than those in the natural habitats. These results suggest that lower density ofD. japonicus in these paddy fields is due to the lack of available food for nymphs rather than the effects of interspecific competition withD. major. InD. major, significant differences were not found in the number of eggs, each instar nymphs and adults. These results suggest that the effects of interspecific competition did not affect the reproductive performance ofD. major.  相似文献

Summary Rufous turtle dove,Streptopelia orientalis, coming to the soybean field entered it from the outer part to eat soybean cotyledons. As a result, the injured plants extended from the outer to inner parts in the field. A model expressing these behaviours was constructed here, by assuming that the amount of food birds can eat in one block determines whether they stay there or move into neighbour block. As the food decrease due to exploitation of them by birds, birds enter into farther parts with the passage of time. The rate of feeding in all visiting birds (an 0 wherea is the rate of feeding per individual andn 0 the number of birds visiting) and the rate of staying at a block,b, was estimated from the field experimental results, using the above model. The value ofan 0 fluctuated greatly, depending upon the season in which soybean seeds sowed. The value ofb also fluctuated inversely with that ofan 0, suggesting the the staying rate decreases with an increase in the number of doves coming, probably because of interference among individuals.  相似文献

Summary Intra- and interspecific competition between laboratory populations of four green leafhoppers,Nephotettix spp. was studied in the laboratory under three different temperature regimes of 24°C, 27°C and 30°C. For the single-species population of the three tropical species, the equilibrium density increased as the temperature increased. On the other hand, for the temperature speciesN. cincticeps, the highest equilibrium density was at the intermediate temperature and the lowest at high temperature. Interspecific interactions between two tropical (N. virescens vs.N. nigropictus), a tropical and a temperature (N. virescens vs.N. cincticeps) and a rice-feeding and a grass-inhabiting (N. virescens vs.N. malayanus) Nephotettix species were also studied in the laboratory at the three temperature regimes. Temperature differentially affected the outcome of competition between twoNephotettix species. BetweenN. virescens andN. nigropictus, the latter was more successful over the former at low and intermediate temperatures, while the former was more successful at high temperature. BetweenN. virescens andN. cincticeps, the temperate species inhibited the growth of the tropical species at low temperature while the tropical species inhibited the growth of the temperate species at high temperature. At intermediate temperature, the population ofN. virescens persisted at a slightly higher density over the population ofN. cincticeps. Between the rice-feedingN. virescens and the grass-inhabitingN. malayanus, regardless of temperature the population density of the latter was greatly reduced and later became extinct while the population of the former continued its growth. These consequences of competition between twoNephotettix species conformed fairly well to those predicted by theLotka-Volterra model using demographic parameters specified for each species.  相似文献

Closely related species of gall-forming aphids are often associated with a single host species. SixTetraneura species coexist on the Japanese elm,Ulmus davidiana, in Sapporo, northern Japan. This paper describes the probabilities of coexistence on macro- and microgeographic scales (i.e., on host trees and host leaves) and examines whether coexistence with conspecific or heterospecific galls on leaves or shoots has any effect on the fecundity of each aphid species using multiple regression. A Monte Carlo simulation showed that the frequency distribution of the numbers of species on individual host trees differed significantly from that expected from the null model. There were significantly positive or negative associations between species.Tetraneura radicicola andsorini always coexisted with other species on trees they infested. Multiple regression revealed that the coexistence of conspecific or heterospecific galls on individual leaves had no influence on the fecundity ofradicicola andsorini, but had a negative influence on that of sp. O. On average,radicicola andsorini produced a smaller number of offspring in galls than sp. O, and obviously consumed only a small part of resources available on the galled leaves. Evidence available suggests that although amensalism does arise between sp. O and other species, its influence in not so strong as to exclude sp. Summary The prey capture tactics of spiders was analyzed, considering the energy gained by the capture of prey and that required for it. For the purpose of it, a growth model of spiders was constructed, expressing the flow rate of prey biomass to the spider's body by differential equations. Solving these equations under the differing values of three parameters, growth curves of spiders was obtained. These three parameters are the amount of prey biomass supplied daily to spiders,x 0, the rate of prey capture of spiders, α, and a coefficient of the respiration rate required for the capture of prey,k. When the value ofk increased, spiders could grow only at high value ofx 0. These results suggest that habitats with small prey biomass are preferred by spiders adopting a sit-and-wait tactics for prey capture, which requires small values ofk. Wolf spiders are one of these spiders showing that tactics. On the other hand, web-builders which require large amount of energy for spinning webs (namely, take large value ofk), are able to grow only in the habitats with large prey biomass. Each species of spiders are considered to locate in a certain point between both extremes of these tactics for the capture of prey.  相似文献

Summary The mating system of a subsocial spider mite,Schizotetranychus miscanthi Saitō, which is closely related toSchizotetranychus longus Saitō (the long seta form ofSchizotetranychus celarius (Banks) is a synonym of the latter) was studied in comparison with that ofS. longus. Comparisons between nesting patterns of the two related species,S. miscanthi andS. longus revealed a difference in distribution of males among nests. Although more than one male sometimes occurred in the large nests ofS. miscanthi, most nests were occupied only by a single male. On the other hand, many nests ofS. longus included several males. Behavioral experiments revealed that the male and females ofS. miscanthi which cohabited in a nest defended their offspring from phytoseiid predators. Observations and a census of the nesting pattern in a wild population indicate that this is the second example of biparental defense and of a subsocial life-pattern in spider mites. Differences in mating systems were experimentally demonstrated in the two species. Only a single male ofS. miscanthi survived in a nest, as a result of highly aggressive male-male combat, while two males ofS. longus cohabited in a nest. The mating system of the former species is thus considered as harem polygyny, while that of the latter as scramble type polygyny. Furthermore, observations by video recording and scanning electron microscopy showed that the winning male in the male-male combat inS. miscanthi often preyed on the loser, suggesting cannibalism among them.  相似文献

Summary I propose a new method for anlysing predatorprey interactive systems in discontinuous environments. The basic index used here is a generalized version ofLloyd's (1967) “interspecies mean crowding”, which is defined as the number of individuals of one species existing in a given patch per that of the other species in either the same or different patches at either the same or different times. Four indices are derived from different combinations of the numbers of the prey and the predator in habitat patches. Then, the correlation coefficients between the numbers of individuals in patches in both different locations and times are derived by modifying the above new indices. Using this technique, dynamical changes of the joint distributions of the numbers of predators and prey which reflect variation in local conditions, can readily be described. As an example, this method was applied to an analysis of the outcomes of a multi-patch version of theLotka-Volterra model of predator-prey interactions.  相似文献

Summary Taylor's power law,s 2 =am b , provides a precise summary of the relationship between sample variance (s 2 ) and sample mean (m) for many organisms. The coefficientb has been interpreted as an index of aggregation, with a characteristic value for a given species in a particular environment, and has been thought to be independent of the sample unit. Simulation studies were conducted that demonstrate that the value ofb may vary with the size of the sample unit in quadrat sampling, and this relationship, in turn, depends on the underlying spatial distribution of the population. For example, simulated populations with hierarchical aggregation on a large scale produced values ofb that increased with the size of the sample unit. In contrast, for a simulated population with randomly distributed clusters of individuals, the value ofb eventually decreased with increasing quadrat size, as sample counts became more uniform. A single value ofTaylor'sb, determined with a particular sample unit, provides neither a fixed index of aggregation nor a complete picture of a species' spatial distribution. Rather, it describes a consistent relationship between sample variance and sample mean over a range of densities, on a spatial scale related to the size of the sample unit. This relationship may reflect, but not uniquely define, density-dependent population and behavioral processes governing the spatial distribution of the organism. Interpretation ofTaylor'sb for a particular organism should be qualified by reference to the sample unit, and comparisons should not be made between cases in which different sample units were used. Whenever possible, a range of sample units should be used to provide information about the pattern of distribution of a population on various spatial scales.  相似文献

Summary ThreeAthalia sawflies,A. japonica, A. rosae andA. infumata, feeding on cruciferous plants, coexist in Japan. However, it is not known what ecological strategies they use and what environmental factors are crucial to such strategies. I attempted to explain these questions by examining the relationship between the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of threeAthalia sawflies and their habitats in three districts (Lowland, Intermediate and Mountain). The three sawflies have different spatio-temporal distribution patterns, though they usually used common cruciferous plants.A. japonica was abundant in spring and autumn but disappeared during summer in all the districts. In the Lowland, populations ofA. rosae andA. infumata, like that ofA. japonica, crashed in summer. HoweverA. rosae occurred mainly in summer in the Intermediate and Mountain. AlthoughA. infumata occurred in the same seasons asA. rosae in all districts, population levels ofA. infumata were always lower than those ofA. rosae. The crucial factors controlling their population patterns were the availability of host plants and temperature. Population crashes ofA. rosae andA. infumata were due to food depletion, and those ofA. japonica were due to heat stress. On the other hand, their population patterns may be interpreted as phenological synchronization with their original host plants, though they all existed on common cruciferous plants. The three sawflies may have evolved different strategies to escape from unfavorable habitat conditions. Such strategies are speculated to be summer diapause inA. japonica, long distance migration inA. rosae, and local dispersal inA. infumata.  相似文献

Summary A male fitness advantage to wing reduction was investigated for the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus, which is wing dimorphic. Field surveys for the frequency of matings between wing morphs showed that the mating probability was much higher in brachypterous males than in macropterous males in the early breeding season. Brachypterous males copulated with not only brachypterous females but also macropterous females in this season. This led to a considerable rate (30%) of insemination of macropterous females just before emigration even in the early breeding season. A rearing experiment for the pre-reproductive period of females revealed that females mated with brachypterous males copulated and oviposited earlier than females mated with macropterous males. These results indicate that there is a fitness advantage to wing reduction in the males ofC. saccharivorus in terms of the earlier sexual maturation.  相似文献

Summary Dispersal propensity of green leafhoppers was compared between a tropical species,Nephotettix virescens, and a temperate species,N. cincticeps. The flight ability was measured with tethered flight technique under laboratory conditions (25°C, 16L-8D). The pre-flight period was shorter and the flight duration was longer inN. virescens than inN. cincticeps in both sexes. No significant correlations were found between the flight activity and morphometric characters for either of the two species. The results suggested that dispersal propensity ofN. virescens is higher than that ofN. cincticeps.  相似文献

This paper explores the feminine reclamation of polygamy seen in female-oriented American television shows Big Love, The Girls Next Door, and Sister Wives in terms of their commentary on contemporary gender roles in neoliberal society. Reception discourses suggest these programs respond to feminine frustrations with the burdens of work and domesticity and the isolation associated with hyper-individualist late capitalist society. Using textual strategies associated with feminine media forms and contemporary feminine culture, such as the investment in the female group, the female gaze at the female body, and the reclamation of feminine history, these shows demonstrate femininity's capacity to critique as well as support mainstream society. Still, femininity's tendency to merge escapism and cultural critique, seen in all three shows, points to the difficulty of considering it progressive or regressive, instead suggesting that it should be considered as a different conceptual and social space, as a varied set of structures, practices, reading protocols, and an ethics of self that patriarchal cultures cannot easily co-opt.  相似文献
