The number of children raised by never-married parents has increased in recent years. Although these children are at risk for the same types of negative outcomes after relationship dissolution as children of divorced parents, few resources exist for never-married parents who are facing coparenting challenges. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Parenting Together, a 9-hr (3 session) coparenting course designed exclusively for never-married parents. Results indicated positive changes in participant knowledge, coparenting attitude, child triangulation behavior, and coparenting teamwork behavior. Additionally, changes in coparenting attitude predicted both decreased child triangulation and increased coparenting teamwork behavior.  相似文献

In the debate over parenting plans for infants and toddlers, a central question is whether these very young children should spend overnight time away from their mothers in their fathers’ care. This article summarizes and critiques the 11 empirical studies that have addressed this question. Overall, overnighting was not associated with negative outcomes for infants and toddlers and was associated with positive outcomes for preschoolers.  相似文献

Using data from a sample of 2,274 divorced or separated parents who participated in the Focus on Kids (FOK) divorce education program, we examine program effectiveness by demographic characteristics. We followed up with 149 participants after between 4 and 10 months with a follow-up posttest survey to examine long-term effectiveness. Overall, the vast majority of parents indicated that the FOK program was helpful and worthwhile. However, younger participants, females, and those with lower education levels and lower incomes found the program to be most helpful. At follow-up, parents were less likely to be engaging in coparenting conflict. Implications for divorce education programs are discussed.  相似文献

This article reports on a new approach to parent education in which a group of parents developed a parent education curriculum and facilitated the program. The approach is based upon a model of empowerment that asserts that parents, working collectively, can affect meaningful change in their lives. After describing the HOPE (Helping Our Parents to be Educators) Project, the article explores whether the program successfully influenced parents' abilities to parent well. Using a repeated-measures model, the study found that participation resulted in improved communication within the family, enhanced social support, better attitudes toward the child, and increased parental empowerment.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the 2nd and 3rd editions of the Children First parent education programs for parents experiencing divorce or separation. Participants were 678 parents experiencing separation or divorce in 2 Midwestern counties. Changes from pretest to posttest on participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and likelihood of adaptive coparenting were assessed. Both editions of the program had a significant positive effect on all 3 measures of adaptive coparenting. The effect sizes from pretest to posttest for the 2nd edition were small, whereas the effect sizes for the 3rd edition of the program were nearly twice as large. Superiority of the 3rd edition might be due to an increased focus on explicit training on adaptive coparenting behaviors.  相似文献

Divorce education programs are conducting increasingly rigorous impact evaluations to assess if their curriculum improves parenting practices, reduces conflict in the coparenting relationship, and improves outcomes for children. This article presents a 6-month follow-up evaluation of the online version of Parents Forever, an 8-hour divorce education course developed by the University of Minnesota Extension. At follow-up, parents (N = 232) reported significant improvements on several questions about postdivorce parenting and well-being, indicating that the online version of Parents Forever is effective in promoting positive behavioral change for parents.  相似文献

The intent of this study was to examine the perceived value of a 4-hour divorce education program for adults offered in a Midwestern state. Parents Forever: Education for Families in Divorce Transition is a divorce education program directed toward educating adults about separation, divorce, and the effects on children. Participants included 342 adults who attended the class and responded to retrospective questionnaires assessing their perceived satisfaction, knowledge, and demographic status. Also, 32 legal and community professionals participated in the program and responded to questions designed to assess perceptions of program value. Both respondent groups reported high satisfaction levels and significant knowledge gains through the class experience. Implications of the findings for program support and brief divorce interventions are discussed.  相似文献

The authors present findings from a large‐scale, random‐assignment evaluation of Building Strong Families (BSF), a program offering group sessions on relationship skills education to low‐income, unmarried parents who were expecting or had recently had a baby. Findings based on a 3‐year follow‐up survey of over 4,000 couples indicate that BSF did not succeed in its central objectives of improving the couple relationship, increasing the quality of coparenting, or enhancing father involvement. In fact, the program had modest negative effects on some of these outcomes. BSF also had little impact on child well‐being, with no effect on children's family stability or economic well‐being and only a modest positive effect on children's socioemotional development. Impacts varied across the 8 study sites. Although attendance at group sessions was relatively low, there is little evidence of program effects even among couples who attended sessions regularly.  相似文献

The field of divorce education is calling for greater rigor in evaluating program effectiveness and University Extension programs are no exception. Parents Forever, a University of Minnesota Extension divorce education program developed in the 1990s, conducted a quasi-experimental design study, with a sample of in-person class participants and a comparison sample of divorcing parents. Independent samples t tests were conducted between the unstandardized residuals of each group. In support of the program’s goals, results indicated positive program effects for several variables related to parenting practices, adult quality of life, self-efficacy, and parent report of child conduct problems and peer problems (p < .01). No effect was found for coparenting conflict, adult social health, and child hyperactivity, and marginal program effects (p < .05), both positive and negative, were found for coparenting alliance (–), positive parenting (+), child emotional symptoms (+), and child prosocial behavior (–).  相似文献

Parents who participated in Kids First, Inc., a court-mandated seminar designed to help them understand their children's needs during the divorce process, were contacted for a three-year follow- up to assess the impact of the program. The program was also studied by observing the seminar at two different times, and by interviewing key personnel responsible for its implementation. Preliminary results indicate that the program does have the desired impact. The program mission-to give divorcing parents information about how the divorce process affects children and what they can do to minimize their children's pain-seems to be well understood by the program presenters, referring judges, and by the parents themselves after intervention. The purpose of this project was to experiment with a small-group educational and ski1ls training approach to divorce education and conflict resolution. Three groups of couples were referred by the court, because of child-centered conflict that the parties brought to court, the last group being the largest (seven couples). They undertook a four week, two hour per week, group education experience. Five of the couples in the last group met the criteria for answering pre and post test questionnaires (attitude and behavior focus), such that one could assess the effect of the group experience on the members. The results indicated that the group's attitudes toward parental cooperation improved significantly, while their self-reported behavior also improved, but not at a significant level. Comments about the process and contrast with large group divorce education are made as a result of the findings. Some focus is given to recommended changes in the process that would likely increase the impact on parents of the effects of their conflict on the children.  相似文献

The Parents Raising Safe Kids Program (PRSK) is a research-based manualized violence prevention curriculum designed to decrease coercive parenting behavior, encourage positive discipline, increase media violence literacy, and increase child development knowledge. This study is a multi-site pre-post comparison evaluation of PRSK's effectiveness with diverse parents, including those who are incarcerated, in drug treatment and both English and Spanish speaking. Results indicate that PRSK was successful at improving media violence literacy, positive parenting behavior, child development knowledge, anger management, and prosocial problem solving. Additionally, PRSK was especially efficacious for Spanish speaking participants, who improved more than English speakers. Due to the need for appropriate and cost-effective programs for underrepresented groups, these results add to the growing evidence base supporting the use of PRSK with diverse parents. PRSK is effective in educating caregivers about nonviolent parenting behavior and child development. It is flexible, focuses on parents of very young children, and is cost effective. The program costs a fraction of other evidence-based practices yet statistical effect sizes for change over time are comparable.  相似文献

Based on 65 interviews with professionals and parents conducted during 2007–2008, this 16‐month, mainly qualitative evaluation of Parentline Plus’ Time to Talk Community Programme (a preventative initiative within England’s teenage pregnancy strategy) found that a community development approach and an ethos of partnership with parents and professionals facilitated engagement. Respectful and realistic implementation involved skilled workers building relationships of trust. By consulting with other professionals and parents it was possible to establish local need and to build on existing provision. Initially, insufficient prior local consultation and negotiation created perceptions of an imposed initiative, led by outsiders, resulting in wary local parents and professionals. The engagement and evaluation processes are considered in relation to the short‐term nature of the initiative and potential conflicts between responding flexibly to the needs of parents and delivering targeted programmes.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if the quality of children's relationships with their primary residential par- ents interacts with interparental conflict to predict children's postdi- vorce psychological adjustment problems. It was predicted that a high quality relationship would moderate the relation between inter- parental conflict and children's psychological adjustment problems such that this relation would be significantly attenuated for children with high quality relationships, defined in terms of high levels of acceptance and high quality communication. No support was found for this hypothesis. Implications of these findings for the development of preventive intervention programs and directions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

This qualitative research examined parenting, parental conflict, and parent–child relationships following separation in the context of Australian government reform in 2006 and subsequent changes to the Family Law Act (1975). Participants were English-speaking men and women, age 16 to 27 years. The research was guided by attachment theory and social conflict theory, and embedded in grounded theory. The Cooperative Competitive Parental Conflict model emerged from the data. Two factors moderated the parent–child relationship: emotional security and responsive parenting. The research found it was not parental conflict, but how parental conflict was handled, that created the psychological burden for a child.  相似文献

Abstract

Within the context of movement toward a preventive health model, Bowling Green State University has implemented a health risk reduction program. This is comprised of three components: 1) Database Acquisition For Student Health (DASH), 2) peer health education, and 3) intervention programs in weight control, exercise, and smoking cessation. In the present study, freshmen who had completed a DASH health questionnaire prior to entering the university, were assigned to one of three treatment groups: 1) DASH information was discussed with a peer health educator and then distributed to the student; 2) DASH results were sent through the mail; 3) DASH results were temporarily withheld (no-feedback control group). It was hypothesized that the most effective means of feedback would be by the peer health education program. Pre-post change in students' health attitudes, health locus of control expectancies, and perceived value of health was not systematically related to the different methods of feedback. Based on these results and low enrollment in the three intervention programs, the original hypothesis was not supported. Results were interpreted in the context of possible program failure and in terms of low reliability of the measures utilized, ceiling effects, and sample characteristics. Recommendations for the future delivery of services for the health risk reduction program were proposed.  相似文献

The current study sought to identify what parents would perceive to be helpful in terms of including technology topics in parent education programs, rather than assuming what would be best for parents. Parents were recruited for participation from a western state in the United States between 2012 and 2013. A qualitative approach was used to analyze parental responses (N?=?168) regarding what topics/areas would be beneficial if they attended an educational offering relating to teens and technology. Parents indicated they wanted specific direction and skills relating to the practice of implementing parental mediation, and information about staying current with the technology trends. Other findings focused on the difficulty of getting parents to commit to such education.  相似文献
