Summary The virgin female introduced pine sawfly,Diprion similis (Hartig), produces a powerful sex pheromone capable of attracting males. Pending chemical identification of the substance, a pilot
study in male annihilation is under consideration. A mathematical model was developed to assess the feasibility of population
suppression using pheromone-baited traps. Departure from preexisting population models resulted chiefly from the arrhenotokous
nature of the sawfly. The model predicts alternating sawfly generations which undergo first a large shift in the sex ratio
but no population reduction, followed by a large decrease in population size with a moderating sex ratio. Four generations
of intensive trapping would theoretically be sufficient to eliminate the sawfly from an isolated area. 相似文献

The antLasius niger was observed collecting honeydew and preying on the two aphid speciesLachnus tropicalis andMyzocallis kuricola on the chestnut treesCastanea crenata. Observation determined how the antL. niger controlled their predation on the aphids in response to the density and honeydew-productivity of the aphids.Lachnus tropicalis was a better honeydew source thanM. kuricola forL. niger in terms of the amount of honeydew collected per unit time by the ants. The number of foraging workers on a tree increased
with the number ofL. tropicalis on the tree, but not with the number ofM. kuricola. The density ofL. tropicalis perL. niger worker on a tree had a positive effect on the predation activity ofL. niger on both aphids, whereas the density ofM. kuricola per ant did not have any significant effect. The predation pressure by the ant which increased withL. tropicalis density, however, directed toM. kuricola rather than toL. tropicalis. These facts suggest (1) thatL. niger control their predation activities on aphids with regards to the densities of the attended aphids per worker, and (2) that
the ants prey on the aphid species producing less honeydew. The effects of the ant predation on aphids and the importance
of these predation effect in antaphids interactions were discussed. 相似文献

An individual-based model forDrosophila is formulated, based on competition amongst larvae consuming the same batch of food. The predictions of the model are supported
by data for single speciesDrosophila populations reared in the laboratory. The model is used to build a simple discrete model for the dynamics ofDrosophila populations that are kept over a number of generations. The dynamics of a single species is shown to give either a stable
equilibrium or fluctuations which can be periodic or chaotic. When the dynamics of a species in the absence of the other is
periodic or chaotic, we found coexistence or two alternative states, on neither of which the species can coexist. 相似文献

Summary Intraspecies competition in a field population ofGregopimpla himalayensis (Hym.: Ichneumonidae) parasitic on the prepupae ofMalacosoma neustria testacea (Lep.: Lasiocampidae) was investigated.
The parasite oviposits the sufficient number of progeny (5 individuals/0.1 g dry weight of host) to exhaust a single host
in a single attack. However, at the intensity less than 22–26 individuals/0.1 g d.w. of host, all individuals can emerge,
i.e. density-dependent mortality does not occur. Within this range of intensity, survival of parasite larvae is guaranteed
by diminution in body size and decreasing sex ratio. In contrast, total biomass of parasites showed a peak at 5 individuals/0.1
g d.w. of host at which a single host is exhausted.
Above the intensity of 22–26, extraordinary minute individuals appeared and they died before maturation.
If intraspecies competition play a role in regulation ofG. himalayensis population in the field, the process is usually not through density-dependent mortality but through decreasing reproductive
rate caused by decrease in the sex ratio, adult longevity and fecundity.

Summary The dynamics of Angoumois grain moth,Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), and maize weevil,Sitophilus zeamais
Motschulsky, populations breeding in a small bulk (initially 5.36 t) of shelled corn were studied over an 8-year period by monthly sampling.
The weevil population showed wide fluctuations in density superimposed on a general decline with time. The moth population
showed no upward or downward trend for the first 60 months, although it fluctuated widely. Following a decline that occurred
between 56 and 60 months, the moth population fluctuated within a much narrower range, and there was a general decrease in
density with time. The decline of the weevil population paralleled deterioration of the corn as did that of the moth population
after ca 60 months, and the decline of both species probably resulted from increasing scarcity of suitable breeding sites.
Both populations exhibited seasonal variation in density with minima in late summer and early fall, following periods of adversely
high temperatures in the storage shed. The populations increased during the fall, leveled off or declined slightly during
the winter months, and then increased to maximum levels in late spring or early summer. It thus appears that high temperatures
had a greater adverse effect on the populations than low temperatures. The grain moth and the maize weevil both tended to
be randomly dispersed at low population levels and moderately aggregated at intermediate and high levels, although the degree
of aggregation was not correlated with population density when low population levels were considered separately, and the maize
weevil showed a greater tendency for aggregation than did the grain moth. Analysis of individual samples at fixed points in
time showed a conspicuous bias for negative correlation between numbers of the two species within sampling quadrats, suggesting
a tendency for the two species to segregate within the grain mass. This process could have resulted from behavioral differences
or from the destruction of one species by the other. Competitive displacement of the grain moth by the maize weevil has been
demonstrated in laboratory experiments but has rarely been observed under natural conditions, and in our study the two species
coexisted for 8 years in a relatively small grain bulk. 相似文献

1. | The effects of larval rearing density and species relative proportions on life-history parameters of two necrophagous Diptera,Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann) (Calliphoridae) andBoettcherisca formosensis Kirner and Lopes (Sarcophagidae), were investigated in mixed cultures. Larval rearing density had a significant effect on larval to adult survivorship, duration of immature development, adult size and relative performance (measured by the composite index of performance,r′) of both species. However, species relative proportions affected adult size of both flies and the duration of immature development ofB. formosensis only. |
2. | B. formosensis had a higher survivorship thanH. ligurriens in all mixed cultures and showed a similar survivorship pattern to that in pure cultures. By contrast, survivorship ofH. ligurriens was lower in mixed than in pure cultures. |
3. | H. ligurriens adults reared from mixed cultures were smaller than those from pure cultures of comparable density, butB. formosensis adults from pure and mixed cultures were of similar size. |
4. | The results suggest that competition betweenB. formosensis andH. ligurriens larvae was asymmetric and the former was the superior competior. |
5. | At low larval densities in mixed cultures, the presence ofH. ligurriens enhanced the performance (as measured byr′) ofB. formosensis, a consequence of suspected interspecific facilitation of larval growth. |

Summary Experiments are described showing the long-term dynamics of two species of bruchid beetles (Callosobruchus chinensis andC. maculatus) in arenas in which the resource of 50 black-eyed beans is divided between 5, 10 or 50 ‘patches’. Both species of adult beetles
exhibit clumped distributions between patches. Within a patch there is a tendency for a density dependent reduction in (1)
eggs laid per female, (2) the proportion of eggs hatching per bean (C. chinensis only) and (3) larval survival which is strongly overcompensating (particularly inC. maculatus). A discrete generation model is used as a framework to draw these results together and show how the different factors affecting
natality and mortality can influence the population dynamics. Finally, the importance of the resource renewal interval in
influencing the period of the population cycles is discussed. 相似文献

Summary To understand the mechanism of spread of pine wilt disease caused by the pinewood nematode,Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, which is vectored by a cerambycid,Monochamus alternatus, the spatial distribution of trees weakened by the nematode was examined within aPinus thunbergii stand from June to October for 4 years. The weakened trees were distributed in a clumped pattern in 1980 and 1981, at an
early stage of infestation. In many cases, they showed a double-clumped pattern. The degree of aggregation was higher in June
or July than after August. They were uniformly distributed in June or July 1982 and in June 1983 whereas they showed a double-clumped
pattern after August. The trees were frequently weakened in June or July when they were near the trees weakened during the
previous year. At quadrat sizes of more than 25 m2, spatial overlapping was pronounced between trees weakened during June–July of the current year and those weakened in the
previous year. The seasonal changes in spatial distribution of weakened trees were explained by the interaction amongM. alternatus, B. xylophilus andPinus trees. 相似文献

Mathematical procedures are given to estimate infestation totals and daily life stage arrivals, departures, and mortality
ofDendroctonus frontalis
Zimmermann for an infested tree in the field. These estimates are based on minimal sample data and are designed to utilize all available
information. Daily arrival estimates for larvae, pupae, and callow adults are obtained by indirect analysis without direct
observation of these stages. The procedures are applied to 147 infested trees, and the results are transformed to a common
time basis to obtain daily expectations by life stage for an “average” tree. These expectations suggest optimal times for
field sampling or relative times of sampling when optimal times are missed. Expected daily arrival distributions by life stage
for a single egg and a single attacking adult are given. Procedures are given for utilizing collateral information to obtain
an infestation total and daily arrival estimates for a boundary life stage. The results of this study are applicable to anyD. frontalis field study, and the procedures given are applicable to any bark inhabiting insect having similar habits. 相似文献

Summary The biology of the veliid bugM. d. atrolineata, its predatory behavior, and the effects of plural hunting were studied to evaluate its role as a predator of the brown planthopperNilaparvata lugens in the Philippines. The probability of planthoppers falling onto the water surface and provision of habitat continuity was
measured by a sticky trap placed at the base of rice hills in a greenhouse and in paddy fields.
The developmental period of immature stages combined was 21 days. If given prey, females laid 25 eggs on the average during
an adult life span of 18 days. Starved adults could survive for only 3–5 days.
The functional response to prey density was sigmoid, and the maximum number of prey killed was 7 per day. Prey feeding was
completed in 12–36 min. The percentage of successful prey attacks averaged 5–8%, decreasing with higher (and larger) developmental.
stages of prey, but adult prey were found the soonest. Plural hunting increased the probability of capturing prey by as much
as 2.5 times that by individual hunting.
Late-instar nymphs, which may be more active, fell from rice hills in a greenhouse more than early-instar nymphs, and the
number falling increased with density. In the field the percentage of planthoppers falling to the water in 1 day varied considerably,
from 1% for nymphs in one field to 67% for adults in another field.
On the basis of work described above and given the high density of veliid predators in flooded paddy fields of tropical Asia,M. d. atrolineata is considered one of the most important natural enemies of the brown planthopper. 相似文献

Summary The effects of food supply and population density on the nocturnal behaviour ofArion ater andAriolimax columbianus were investigated. Density did not significantly affectA. ater's level of activity or short-term movement, resting, or feeding.A. columbianus was more active and moved, rested, and fed more frequently when slug density was high.A. ater foraged and rested more often, but fed less when good food was unavailable.Ariolimax's only response to the food regime was to feed more when good food was available. Seasonal changes in the level of activity
and behaviour ofArion were evident, whereasAriolimax's activity and behavioural repertoire were not similarly affected.Arion ater's nightly activity appeared to be mainly food oriented, whileAriolimax columbianus seemed most responsive to slug density during its nocturnal activity periods. 相似文献

Summary Experiments were conducted to determine if slug density, or food quantity and quality could cause dispersal by slugs.Arion ater dispersed quickly from overcrowded areas, where high mortality was incurred by this species. Poor food conditions, caused
more dispersal than good food conditions, but food had no effect on the mortality ofA. ater. Neither food nor density factors had significant effects on the dispersal ofAriolimax columbianus. However, moreA. columbianus died in the high- than low-density treatments.A. columbianus mortality was unaffected by the food factor. DispersingArion were heavier than non-dispersers, but there was no difference between the weights of dispersing and non-dispersingAriolimax. There were significant seasonal changes in the dispersal rate, mortality and weight of dispersingArion, whereas only the mortality ofAriolimax changed significantly during the experiments.
SinceArion ater did not markedly reduce its activity during unsuitable weather it was able to leave areas of poor food and high slug density
fairly rapidly.Ariolimax columbianus' large size allowed it to remain inactive during unfavourable weather and permitted this species to be relatively unresponsive
to the experimental treatments. 相似文献

Summary Resource exploitation by and intraspecific competition in larvae ofGastrophysa atrocyanea andGalerucella vittaticollis were investigated in field and laboratory experiments. Larvae of both species frequently suffered from food shortages in
the field. WhenG. atrocyanea larvae suffered from a food shortage, severe intraspecific competition occurred because of lack of predation and parasitism.
This exploitive competition was caused by a local food shortage of the host plant. Individuals survived by fast exploitation
when food became abundant (contest type competition). TheG. atrocyanea larvae were wasteful of the food resource, and no mechanism by which to economize on the utilization of the resource was
acquired because of their exploitation of the abundant resource. In contrast, theG. vittaticollis population probably is regulated by extrinsic factors such as predation and parasitism. Those larvae grew into smaller adults
than those ofG. atrocyanea under a food shortage, so that their wasted food consumption was lower than that ofG. atrocyanea. Although intraspecific competition was similar to that forG. atrocyanea, it was not as severe. The food forG. vittaticollis was apt to be appropriated by other wasteful exploitators such asG. atrocyanea, which was superior in resource exploitation; thereforeG. vittaticollis frequently suffered a food shortage. Consequently selection in relation to tolerance to starvation became more acute forG. vittaticollis than forG. atrocyanea, and individuals ofG. vittaticollis that could endure starvation better may have been selected. 相似文献

The deme formation hypothesis in herbivorous insects states that herbivores differentiate genetically into small demes, each
specialized in the idiosyncratic traits of individual plants. We examined this hypothesis in gall-forming aphids,Adelges japonicus, by reciprocal transfers of aphids among three susceptible clones ofPicea jezoensis standing in proximity. Performance of aphids transferred to their natal clone was compared with that of aphids transferred
to other novel clones. ANCOVA showed no significant donor (source of aphids) by receptor (recipient of aphids) interactions
for both total aphid performance on the host tree over a life cycle and its three subdivisions(q
1,q
2 andq
3). In addition, the total performance on the natal clone was lowest among those in the three clones, which was explicitly
against the prediction from the local adaptation. In contrast, there were significant receptor effects onq
1 (fecundity of gallicolae multiplied by survivorship of fundatrices while feeding on needles) andq
3 (fecundity of fundatrices multiplied by survivorship of gallicolae before emergence from the galls), suggesting genetic differences
in resistance among clones. The two-fold difference inq
3 among clones was due to different gall size, which was highly correlated with the number of gallicolae that emerged from
the gall. The two-fold difference inq
1 seemed to be caused by different survivorship of larval fundatrices while feeding on needles. 相似文献

Summary We performed multiple-generation competition experiments betweenCallosobruchus analis andC. phaseoli with different bean sizes. In each system, we supplied 5 g of mung beans (Vigna radiata) every 10 days. We examined three types of bean conditions: 5 g of large beans, 5 g of small beans, and a mixture of 2.5
g of large and small beans. In small bean condition,C. analis dominatedC. phaseoli in all three replicates andC. phaseoli was extinct by the 260th day. On the contrary,C. phaseoli overcameC. analis within 250 days in large beans in all three replicates. In mixed beans condition the two bruchid species coexisted more than
500 days in two out of the three replicates. Even in the exceptional case, both species coexisted for 460 days. These results
were examined in the light of the predictions from short-term larval competition experiments and a game theoretical model
by Smith and Lessells (1985). The density and frequency dependent results during larval competition inside a bean was concluded
to be a main factor to produce the above long-term competition results. 相似文献

Summary A model simulating the movement and oviposition of monarch butterflies over a female's life time is presented. The model's
predictions compare favourably with observed data and suggest that females who lay eggs in an optimal fashion should have
low directionalities in areas with high host plant density (patches and single plants) and high directionalities in areas
with low host plant density. The model also provides one means of combining individual animal processes and spatial heterogeneity
into population dynamics. 相似文献
