All-Union population census 1989

Selected results from the 1989 Soviet census are presented. They concern population size, sex ratio, and age distribution of the rural and urban population for the whole country and constituent republics; and number of families and family size by rural and urban areas for the whole country and constituent republics.     

All-Union population census: family structure

This is a continuation of a previous series of tables on family structure in the USSR, based on data from the 1979 census. Data are included on the size and nationality of families among the urban, rural, and total populations of each Union Republic.

Preparations for the next census of the USSR, scheduled for 1989, are outlined. The program for trial censuses to be held in 1986 and 1987 is described, and proposed changes and additions based on previous censuses are listed.

1991 Austrian population census

The author describes the basic methodology employed in the 1991 Austrian census as well as the topics covered. Lessons from the Austrian experience that could be applied to Soviet censuses are considered.

The trial population census

The author describes the trial population census that was scheduled to take place in the USSR in December 1986 to test methodology, programs, and computational techniques to be used in the 1989 census. The sample for the trial census was 800,000 individuals residing in various parts of the country.
