We investigate the influence of residual serial correlation and of the time dimension on statistical inference for a unit root in dynamic longitudinal data, known as panel data in econometrics. To this end, we introduce two test statistics based on method of moments estimators. The first is based on the generalized method of moments estimators, while the second is based on the instrumental variables estimator. Analytical results for the Instrumental Variables (IV) based test in a simplified setting show that (i) large time dimension panel unit root tests will suffer from serious size distortions in finite samples, even for samples that would normally be considered large in practice, and (ii) negative serial correlation in the error terms of the panel reduces the power of the unit root tests, possibly up to a point where the test becomes biased. However, near the unit root the test is shown to have power against a wide range of alternatives. These findings are confirmed in a more general set-up through a series of Monte Carlo experiments.

In this paper we have provided a general result on the moments of a function of nonnormal random vector. The results for the normal case follow as a special case of this result. It is also indicated that the moments of a large class of econometric estimators and test statistics can be obtained by using our general result. This includes least squares estimator in the dynamic model, unit root tests, and the two step semiparametric estimators, among others.

In this paper, we suggest a similar unit root test statistic for dynamic panel data with fixed effects. The test is based on the LM, or score, principle and is derived under the assumption that the time dimension of the panel is fixed, which is typical in many panel data studies. It is shown that the limiting distribution of the test statistic is standard normal. The similarity of the test with respect to both the initial conditions of the panel and the fixed effects is achieved by allowing for a trend in the model using a parameterisation that has the same interpretation under both the null and alternative hypotheses. This parameterisation can be expected to increase the power of the test statistic. Simulation evidence suggests that the proposed test has empirical size that is very close to the nominal level and considerably more power than other panel unit root tests that assume that the time dimension of the panel is large. As an application of the test, we re-examine the stationarity of real stock prices and dividends using disaggregated panel data over a relatively short period of time. Our results suggest that while real stock prices contain a unit root, real dividends are trend stationary.

This article develops a statistic for testing the null of a linear unit root process against the alternative of a stationary exponential smooth transition autoregressive model. The asymptotic distribution of the test is shown to be nonstandard but nuisance parameter-free and hence critical values are obtained by simulations. Simulations show that the proposed statistic has considerable power under various data generating scenarios. Applications to real exchange rates also illustrate the ability of our test to reject null of unit root when some of the alternative tests do not.

To model growth curves in survival analysis and biological studies the logistic distribution has been widely used. In this article, we propose a goodness-of-fit test for the logistic distribution based on an estimate of the Gini index. The exact distribution of the proposed test statistic and also its asymptotic distribution are presented. In order to compute the proposed test statistic, parameters of the logistic distribution are estimated by approximate maximum likelihood estimators (AMLEs), which are simple explicit estimators. Through Monte Carlo simulations, power comparisons of the proposed test with some known competing tests are carried. Finally, an illustrative example is presented and analyzed.

The Cauchy estimator of an autoregressive root uses the sign of the first lag as instrumental variable. The resulting IV t-type statistic follows a standard normal limiting distribution under a unit root case even under unconditional heteroscedasticity, if the series to be tested has no deterministic trends. The standard normality of the Cauchy test is exploited to obtain a standard normal panel unit root test under cross-sectional dependence and time-varying volatility with an orthogonalization procedure. The article’s analysis of the joint N, T asymptotics of the test suggests that (1) N should be smaller than T and (2) its local power is competitive with other popular tests. To render the test applicable when N is comparable with, or larger than, T, shrinkage estimators of the involved covariance matrix are used. The finite-sample performance of the discussed procedures is found to be satisfactory.

Normal residual is one of the usual assumptions in autoregressive model but sometimes in practice we are faced with non-negative residuals. In this paper, we have derived modified maximum likelihood estimators of parameters of the residuals and autoregressive coefficient. Also asymptotic distribution of modified maximum likelihood estimators in both stationary and non-stationary models are computed. So that, we can derive asymptotic distribution of unit root, Vuong's and Cox's tests statistics in stationary situation. Using simulation, it shows that Akaike information criterion and Vuong's test work to select the optimal autoregressive model with non-negative residuals. Sometimes Vuong's test select two competing models as equivalent models. These models may be suitable or unsuitable equivalent models. So we consider Cox's test to make inference after model selection. Kolmogorov–Smirnov test confirms our results. Also we have computed tracking interval for competing models to choosing between two close competing models when Vuong's test and Cox's test cannot detect the differences.

This article develops limit theory for likelihood analysis of weak exogeneity in I(2) cointegrated vector autoregressive (VAR) models incorporating deterministic terms. Conditions for weak exogeneity in I(2) VAR models are reviewed, and the asymptotic properties of conditional maximum likelihood estimators and a likelihood-based weak exogeneity test are then investigated. It is demonstrated that weak exogeneity in I(2) VAR models allows us to conduct asymptotic conditional inference based on mixed Gaussian distributions. It is then proved that a log-likelihood ratio test statistic for weak exogeneity in I(2) VAR models is asymptotically χ2 distributed. The article also presents an empirical illustration of the proposed test for weak exogeneity using Japan's macroeconomic data.

For aggregated time series unit root tests are routinely applied to choose among trend and difference stationary models. Recent work demonstrates that such test can also be applied for testing panel data. However, it is well known that disaggregated data often exhibit a considerable amount of heterogeneity so that standard tests may perform poorly. To account for the heterogeneity in the data we allow for individual specific deterministics, that is, we let the time trends vary across the cross section units. It is shown that standard GMM estimators suggested for the dynamic panel data model may fail to give a valid test procedure. To overcome this difficulty, a modified GMM estimator is suggested. In a Monte Carlo study the finite sample properties of the alternative tests are compared.

Non-rejection of a unit root hypothesis by usual Dickey & Fuller (1979) (DF, hereafter) or Phillips & Perron (1988) (hereafter PP) tests should not be taken as strong evidence in favour of unit root presence. There are less popular, but more powerful, unit root tests that should be employed instead of DF-PP tests. A prime example of an alternative test is the LM unit root test developed by Schmidt & Phillips (1992) (hereafter SP) and Schmidt & Lee (1991) (hereafter SL). LM unit root tests are easy to calculate and invariant (similar); they employ optimal detrending and are more powerful than usual DF-PP tests. Asymptotic theory and finite sample critical values (with inaccuracies that we correct in this paper) are available for SP-SL tests. However, the usefulness of LM tests is not fully understood, due to ambiguity over test type recommendation, as well as potentially inefficient derivation of the test that might confuse applied researchers. In this paper, we reconsider LM unit root testing in a model with linear trend. We derive asymptotic distribution theory (in a new fashion), as well as accurate appropriate critical values. We undertake Monte Carlo investigation of finite sample properties of SP-SL LM tests, along with applications to the Nelson & Plosser (1982) time series and real quarterly UK GDP.

In this paper we evaluate the performance of three methods for testing the existence of a unit root in a time series, when the models under consideration in the null hypothesis do not display autocorrelation in the error term. In such cases, simple versions of the Dickey-Fuller test should be used as the most appropriate ones instead of the known augmented Dickey-Fuller or Phillips-Perron tests. Through Monte Carlo simulations we show that, apart from a few cases, testing the existence of a unit root we obtain actual type I error and power very close to their nominal levels. Additionally, when the random walk null hypothesis is true, by gradually increasing the sample size, we observe that p-values for the drift in the unrestricted model fluctuate at low levels with small variance and the Durbin-Watson (DW) statistic is approaching 2 in both the unrestricted and restricted models. If, however, the null hypothesis of a random walk is false, taking a larger sample, the DW statistic in the restricted model starts to deviate from 2 while in the unrestricted model it continues to approach 2. It is also shown that the probability not to reject that the errors are uncorrelated, when they are indeed not correlated, is higher when the DW test is applied at 1% nominal level of significance.

This paper investigates the new prior distribution on the Unobserved-Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) unit root test. Monte Carlo simulations show that the sample size is seriously effective in efficiency of Bayesian test. To improve the performance of Bayesian test for unit root, we propose a new Bayesian test that is robust in the presence of stationary and nonstationary Unobserved-ARCH. The finite sample property of the proposed test statistic is evaluated using Monte Carlo studies. Applying the developed method, we test the policy of daily exchange rate of the German Marc with respect to the Greek Drachma.

The autoregressive Cauchy estimator uses the sign of the first lag as instrumental variable (IV); under independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) errors, the resulting IV t-type statistic is known to have a standard normal limiting distribution in the unit root case. With unconditional heteroskedasticity, the ordinary least squares (OLS) t statistic is affected in the unit root case; but the paper shows that, by using some nonlinear transformation behaving asymptotically like the sign as instrument, limiting normality of the IV t-type statistic is maintained when the series to be tested has no deterministic trends. Neither estimation of the so-called variance profile nor bootstrap procedures are required to this end. The Cauchy unit root test has power in the same 1/T neighborhoods as the usual unit root tests, also for a wide range of magnitudes for the initial value. It is furthermore shown to be competitive with other, bootstrap-based, robust tests. When the series exhibit a linear trend, however, the null distribution of the Cauchy test for a unit root becomes nonstandard, reminiscent of the Dickey-Fuller distribution. In this case, inference robust to nonstationary volatility is obtained via the wild bootstrap.

We examine the asymptotic and small sample properties of model-based and robust tests of the null hypothesis of no randomized treatment effect based on the partial likelihood arising from an arbitrarily misspecified Cox proportional hazards model. When the distribution of the censoring variable is either conditionally independent of the treatment group given covariates or conditionally independent of covariates given the treatment group, the numerators of the partial likelihood treatment score and Wald tests have asymptotic mean equal to 0 under the null hypothesis, regardless of whether or how the Cox model is misspecified. We show that the model-based variance estimators used in the calculation of the model-based tests are not, in general, consistent under model misspecification, yet using analytic considerations and simulations we show that their true sizes can be as close to the nominal value as tests calculated with robust variance estimators. As a special case, we show that the model-based log-rank test is asymptotically valid. When the Cox model is misspecified and the distribution of censoring depends on both treatment group and covariates, the asymptotic distributions of the resulting partial likelihood treatment score statistic and maximum partial likelihood estimator do not, in general, have a zero mean under the null hypothesis. Here neither the fully model-based tests, including the log-rank test, nor the robust tests will be asymptotically valid, and we show through simulations that the distortion to test size can be substantial.

The parameters of a finite mixture model cannot be consistently estimated when the data come from an embedded distribution with fewer components than that being fitted, because the distribution is represented by a subset in the parameter space, and not by a single point. Feng & McCulloch (1996) give conditions, not easily verified, under which the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator will converge to an arbitrary point in this subset. We show that the conditions can be considerably weakened. Even though embedded distributions may not be uniquely represented in the parameter space, estimators of quantities of interest, like the mean or variance of the distribution, may nevertheless actually be consistent in the conventional sense. We give an example of some practical interest where the ML estimators are root of n -consistent.
Similarly consistent statistics can usually be found to test for a simpler model vs a full model. We suggest a test statistic suitable for a general class of model and propose a parameter-based bootstrap test, based on this statistic, for when the simpler model is correct.
