Previous research has shown that materialism relates negatively to satisfaction with many life domains. The present study
broadens this body of research by examining the relationship between three dimensions of materialism and eight quality of
life (QOL) domains in a large, diverse sample of U.S. respondents. Two hypotheses were tested: First, overall measures of
materialism and satisfaction with QOL were thought to be inversely related. Second, the three dimensions of materialism and
QOL domains were hypothesized to be negatively correlated. Results show that overall materialism and its happiness dimension
were consistently negatively related to all eight measures of QOL. Materialism’s centrality and success dimensions were negatively
correlated with seven and six of the eight QOL domains, respectively. Findings are discussed in light of Humanistic and Organismic
theories, and other implications are considered. 相似文献

There is considerable debate in the area of individual quality of life research regarding the factor structure of the QOL
construct that is focused on the number and composition of QOL factors and domains, and its hierarchical nature. The main
goal of this study involve testing by means of confirmatory factor analyses five models that have been pointed out by recent
scientific literature: firstly, an unidimensional model; secondly, a QOL model that consisted of eight inter-correlated domains
proposed by Schalock and Verdugo (2002); thirdly, a model composed of these eight 1st-order factors and one 2nd- order factor; the forth and five are model with
the eight 1st-order factors and three 2nd-order factor that has been denominated in other studies ‘Salamanca model’ and ‘Schalock
model’. Data were collected from 3.029 social service recipients from Catalonia (Spain) who completed the GENCAT Scale, an
objective QOL questionnaire. The best fit of the eight inter-correlated and 1st order domains was empirically demonstrated.
Implications for future research are also discussed. 相似文献

Quality of Life (QOL) is often measured with surveys of citizen’s satisfaction. In contrast, the current research uses already-existing
voting data to infer citizens’ perceptions of QOL. Under this model, citizens decide how much their QOL has improved (or declined)
since the last election, and then vote to reward (or punish) the incumbent party accordingly. Analysis of the popular vote
for the incumbent party then allows inference on how citizens judge their QOL and how they weight the various domains. Previous
research has concluded that voters reward an incumbent who improves the economic domain prior to election. I test whether
voters also reward declining crime rates, and estimate how citizens weight the relative importance of each in determining
QOL. I analyze the vote shares by state from U.S. presidential elections from 1972 to 1996. Results show that changes in crime
rates do influence vote share, consistent with the responsibility hypothesis, but to a smaller degree than the economic domain
does. The method described provides convergent evidence that citizens weight domains differentially, and can provide the weights
for a national QOL index. 相似文献

This study explores the meaning of quality of life (QOL) in China from the perspective of social representations. The data
were collected by open-ended individual interviews with 16 ordinary Chinese people. The study shows that social thinking about
QOL in Chinese society is activated in five critical domains of life: health, family, work, social relations and the natural
environment. Meanwhile, “having” and “being”, the two antinomic, yet dialogical interdependent, interpretive repertoires,
have an overarching generative and normative power over the discourse about QOL. They permeate and underpin the different
domains of life. Dominated by an “economic logic”, the “having” repertoire constructs these life domains through a set of
economic consequences and posits them as resources leading to material possessions. While dominated by an “existential logic”,
the “being” repertoire confesses existential meanings to the same life domains, and emphasises the joy derived from them.
Thereby, it infers that QOL as a social representation is generated from, and organised around, a central thema of “having”
and “being”. 相似文献

Quality of life (QOL) has become an important component of health. By using the methodology of psychometric theory, we examine
the item properties of the WHOQOL-BRIEF. Samejima’s graded response model with natural metrics of the logistic response function
was fitted. The results showed items with negative natures were less discriminating. Items written in a specific way were
more suitable to assess certain subgroups. The national items showed variation in discriminatory power. Questions measuring
objective and specific issues performed worse than items assessing general aspects of the QOL. 相似文献

A scale measuring quality of life (QOL) is important in adolescent research. Using the graded response model (GRM), this study evaluates the psychometric properties of the satisfaction ratings of the Quality of Life Profile Adolescent Version (QOLPAV). Data for 1,392 adolescents were used to check IRT assumptions such as unidimensionality and local item dependence (LID). The goodness of fit of the GRM to the data and the item characteristic curves were evaluated. The reliability and validity analyses included item/test information, Cronbach’s α, and convergent and discriminant validity. Differential item functioning (DIF) procedures were also performed to detect item bias. The results provide evidence that the items sufficiently measured one single dimension. Few pairs of questions were flagged as LID due to content or wording similarity. Five items did not fit the GRM, and 4 were low in item discrimination. The findings also suggest that the assessment had appropriate reliability and validity. The DIF impact on the assessment score was considered minor. Because QOLPAV includes a respondent’s perceived importance of various life aspects, a short form that only considers important life aspects in the overall QOL estimation for each respondent becomes feasible within the framework of IRT. Future studies focusing on the development of a QOL overall index using the items from QOLPAV are recommended. 相似文献

Studies examining relationships between demographic variables in a general population of psychiatric outpatients and quality
of life (QOL), in which QOL was assessed according to current recommendations, have not been performed yet. The aim of this
study was to examine one particular aspect of this relationship: the question to what extent QOL scores can be predicted by
demographic variables. In a sample of adult Dutch psychiatric outpatients (n=495), demographics were recorded and the participants completed a questionnaire for measuring QOL (WHOQOL-100). The relationships
of the demographic variables with the WHOQOL-100 domains Social Relationships and Environment, were stronger than those with
the domains Physical Health and Psychological Health. The latter had only significant relationships with educational level
and sick leave, which explain little of the variance of the concerning QOL domain. In general, the demographic characteristics
used, explained only a relatively small part of the variance in QOL scores. An exception was sick leave, which, in participants
with a job, explained an extensive part (27.4%) of the variance of scores on the domain Physical Health. 相似文献

Importance has been Considered in Satisfaction Evaluation: an Experimental Examination of Locke’s Range-of-affect Hypothesis 总被引:2,自引:4,他引:2
Importance weighting is a common practice in quality of life (QOL) measurement research. Based on the widespread idea that
important domains should make a greater contribution to individuals’ QOL total score, the weighting procedure of multiplying
item satisfaction by an item’s importance has been adopted in many QOL instruments. Locke’s [1969, Organizational Behavior and Human Performance
4, 309–336; 1976, Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Rand McNally, Chicago, pp. 1297–1343] range-of-affect hypothesis indicated that a satisfaction evaluation is determined
by the have-want discrepancy, importance, and the interaction of the have-want discrepancy and importance, implying that a
satisfaction evaluation incorporates the judgment of importance and weighting the satisfaction score with the importance score
is unnecessary. The purpose of the current study was to address the issue of importance weighting by examining Locke’s range-of-affect
hypothesis in the context of QOL research. A within-subject experiment was conducted to see if, given a varying amount of
discrepancy, participants would reveal whether or not satisfaction/dissatisfaction is related to the dimension of importance
placed on the object. Forty undergraduate students at National Taiwan University participated in the current study. Results
revealed that the association between have-want discrepancy and object satisfaction is stronger on the high important dimension
than the less important dimension. Generally, the results were consistent with Locke’s range-of-affect hypothesis, revealing
that a satisfaction evaluation has incorporated the judgment of item importance, suggesting that the procedure of importance
weighting is unnecessary.

Importance weighting is a common idea in quality of life (QOL) measurement. Based on the common idea that important domains
should have more contributions to individuals’ QOL total score, the weighting procedure of multiplying item satisfaction by
item importance was adopted in many QOL instruments. However, in Locke’s [1969, Organizational Behavior and Human Performance
4, pp. 309–336; 1976, in: M.D. Dunnette (eds.), Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Rand McNally, Chicago),
pp. 1297–1343] range-of-affect hypothesis, he indicated that the satisfaction evaluation of an item was determined by the
have–want discrepancy, importance and their interaction (discrepancy × importance), implying that item satisfaction has incorporated
the judgment of item importance, therefore, weighting an item satisfaction score with an item importance score is unnecessary.
The purpose of this study was to examine the range-of-affect hypothesis in the context of QOL research. Three hundred and
thirty two undergraduate students at National Taiwan University (NTU) participated in the study. Item satisfaction, importance
and perceived have–want discrepancy were measured for 12 different life-area items. Global life satisfaction was measured
as well. Regression analysis results showed that item importance and perceived have–want discrepancy have a significant interaction
effect on item satisfaction, supporting Locke’s range-of-affect hypothesis. In addition, regression analysis results also
showed that item importance and item satisfaction did not have a significant interaction effect on global satisfaction, suggesting
that weighting item satisfaction score by item importance value does not have advantages in predicting global satisfaction.
In a summary, the findings revealed that item satisfaction has incorporated the judgment of item importance, and, thus, the
procedure of importance weighting on item satisfaction is unnecessary. 相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of importance weighting when importance ranks were considered
as the weighting values by (1) examining the range-of-affect hypothesis in the within-subject context and (2) comparing performances
of weighted and unweighted satisfaction scores in predicting overall judgment of subjective well-being. Participants were
167 undergraduates at National Taiwan University. The mean age was 19.80 years (SD = 1.98). They were first asked to complete the measurements for global life satisfaction and overall QOL and then completed
a QOL questionnaire for rating satisfaction, perceived have–want discrepancy on 12 life domains and ranking importance on
these domains. Hierarchical linear modeling with a random-coefficients regression model was applied to examine the range-of-affect
hypothesis in the within-subject context. Correlation analysis was applied to evaluate performances of weighted and unweighted
satisfaction scores in predicting overall judgment of subjective well-being. Results of this study supported the range-of-affect
hypothesis, showing that the relationship between item have–want discrepancy and item satisfaction is stronger for high importance
items than low importance items for a given individual. Correlation analysis found that the four weighted satisfaction scores
computed from the algorithms proposed by Hsieh (Social Indicators Research 61:227–240, 2003) were not superior to unweighted
satisfaction score in predicting overall QOL and global life satisfaction. All these findings suggested that weighting satisfaction
scores with importance ranks may not have theoretical basis and empirical contribution. 相似文献

This paper reviews the medical (salutogenic) effect of interventions that aim to improve quality of life. Review of studies
where the global quality of life in chronically ill patients was improved independently of subjective and objective factors
(like physical and mental health, yearly income, education, social network, self-esteem, sexual ability and problems or work).
The methods used were subtypes of integrative medicine (non-drug CAM) like mind body medicine, body psychotherapy, clinical
holistic medicine, consciousness-based medicine and sexology. In about 20 papers on QOL as medicine, in cancer, coronary heart
disease, chronic pain, mental illness, sexual dysfunction, low self-esteem, low working ability and poor QOL, the most successful
intervention strategy seems to be to create a maternal, infantile bonding induced by a combination of conversation therapy
and bodywork. The papers examined the treatments of over 2,000 chronically ill or dysfunctional patients and more than 20
different types of health problems. Global QOL measured by SEQOL, QOL5, QOL1, self-rated physical health, self-rated mental health, self-rated sexual functioning,
anorgasmia, genital pain, self-rated working ability, self-rated relation to self, well-being, life-satisfaction, happiness,
fulfillment of needs, experience of temporal and spatial domains, expression of life’s potentials, and objective functioning.
We found “QOL as medicine” able in the treatment of physical disorders and illnesses including chronic pain (Number Needed
to Treat (NNT) = 1–3, Number Needed to Harm (NNH) > 500), in mental illness (NNT = 1–3, NNH > 500), in sexual dysfunctions
(NNT = 1–2, NNH > 1,000), self-rated low working ability (NNT = 2, NNH > 500), and self-rated low QOL (NNT = 2, NNH > 2,000).
We found that QOL improving interventions helped or cured 30–90% of the patients, typically within one year, independent of
the type of health problem. “QOL as medicine” seems to be able in improving chronic mental, somatic and sexual health issues
without side effects. 相似文献

Quality of Work Life: Theoretical and Methodological Problems, and Presentation of a New Model and Measuring Instrument 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Purpose: Ever since the concept of Quality of Work Life (QWL) was first used over 30 years ago, a range of definitions and theoretical
constructs have succeeded each other with the aim of mitigating the many problems facing the concept. A historical overview
of the concept of QWL is presented here. Given the lack of consensus concerning the solutions that have been developed to
date, a new definition of QWL is suggested, inspired by the research on a related concept, general Quality of Life (QOL) which,
as the literature shows, has faced the same conceptualization and definition problems as QWL. Based on the suggested definition
of QOL, a definition of QWL is provided and the measuring instrument that results therefrom (the Quality of Working Life Systemic
Inventory – QWLSI) is presented. Finally, the solutions that this model and measuring instrument provide for the above-mentioned
problems are discussed. 相似文献

The quality of life (QOL) is a measure of social wellbeing and life satisfaction of individuals in an area. Measuring its spatial dynamics is of great significance as it can assist the policy makers and practitioners in improving the balance between urbanization and living environment. This study proposes an approach to spatially map and examine the relationships between QOL, land use/land cover (LULC) and population density in an urban environment. The city of Lahore, Pakistan was selected as the case study area. The QOL was evaluated through the data related to physical health, psychological, social relationships, environment (natural and built), economic condition and development, and access to facilities and services. The weights/relative importance of each QOL domain was determined through the analytic hierarchy process by processing the data collected from local field experts. Overall QOL was computed by applying the domain weights to the data; spatial mapping of QOL domains and overall QOL was conducted afterwards. The spatial dynamics of QOL were examined, and its interrelationships with LULC and population density were analyzed. The relationship between these three variables turned out to be spatially dynamic. The proposed approach assists the spatial mapping and analyses of QOL, LULC and population, and by examining the spatial dynamics of these variables, contributes to devising appropriate land management and QOL improvement strategies and policies in the metropolitan regions. 相似文献

This article seeks to extend Michalos’ [Social indicators research and health-related quality of life (QoL) research. Social Indicators Research, 65, 27–72, 2004] discussion on bridging social indicators research and health-related QoL (HRQoL) research through an examination
of (1) the relative importance of satisfaction with one’s own health to another common measure of QoL—Life satisfaction, and
(2) the relative importance of health in relation to other major life domains. Using data from two surveys, this article found
that individuals may perceive health as most important in relation to other major life domains but satisfaction with one’s
own health may not necessarily be the most important determining factor (in relation to satisfaction with other major life
domains) of QoL as measured by life satisfaction. These findings support Michalos’ (Social indicators research and HRQoL research.
Social Indicators Research, 65, 27–72, 2004) call for caution regarding the interpretation of research results on HRQoL since many HRQoL measures are measures
of satisfaction with one’s own health and should not be considered as measures of QoL. 相似文献

Application of the Rural Development Index to Analysis of Rural Regions in Poland and Slovakia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The main purpose of this research was to construct a multi-dimensional (composite) index measuring the overall level of rural
development and quality of life in individual rural regions of a given EU country. In the Rural Development Index (RDI) the
rural development domains are represented by hundreds of partial socio-economic, environmental, infrastructural and administrative
indicators/variables at NUTS-4 level (e.g. 991 variables/indicators describing various aspects of rural development in Poland;
340 variables/indicators in Slovakia). The weights of economic, social and environmental domains entering the RDI index are
derived empirically from the econometrically estimated intra- and inter-regional migration function after selecting the “best”
model from various alternative model specifications (e.g. panel estimate logistic regression nested error structure model,
spatial effect models, etc.). The RDI is empirically applied to analysis of the main determinants of rural/regional development
in individual rural areas in years 2002–2005 in Poland and Slovakia at NUTS-4 level. Due to its comprehensiveness the RDI
Index is suitable both to analysis of the overall level of development of rural areas and to an evaluation of the impacts
(impact indicator) of RD and structural programmes at regional levels (NUTS 2–5). 相似文献

In efforts to enhance subjective urban quality of life (QOL), most empirical research focuses on measuring satisfaction. However, other research suggests most residents are satisfied with where they live because they choose local areas which satisfy them on attributes important to them, within the constraints they face. Thus residents choosing very different local areas tend to have similar satisfaction levels. Rather than focusing on residential satisfaction in local areas, it may be useful to focus on residential preferences to both characterize and improve subjective urban QOL in local areas. This study compares satisfaction and preference measures in four broad types of urban environment in South East Queensland, Australia. As expected, the results showed similar levels of satisfaction across these urban environments (spanning inner city, suburban, outer suburban, and coastal areas) with regard to three broad attributes (access to services and facilities, the natural environment, and the social environment). In contrast, the importance of these attributes for residents varied between these urban environments. Thus residential preferences may characterize subjective urban QOL in different urban environments better than residential satisfaction. Moreover, residential preferences provide additional guidance for maintaining and enhancing subjective urban quality of life in local areas. This paper argues for a renewed focus on importance measures in addition to the existing focus on satisfaction measures in subjective urban QOL research. 相似文献

The concept of Quality of life (QOL) has received considerable attention from different disciplines. The aim of this study
was to identify what are the correlates of QOL among Chinese new immigrants in Hong Kong. Data were collected through a cross-sectional
survey among 449 Hong Kong new immigrants from Mainland China. Bivariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to
examine the association between immigrants’ QOL and their demographic characteristics, socio-economic factors, optimism, sense
of control, perceived social support, perceived neighborhood disorder, collective efficacy, pre-migration planning, depressive
symptoms and acculturation stress. Our findings demonstrated that depressive symptom is the most prominent factor in reducing
immigrants’ level of QOL, perceived social support and optimism are the two important factors that enhance the QOL of these
depressed immigrants. Our results indicate that preventive measures must be developed, and professional counseling and psychological
support services must be provided to new immigrants in Hong Kong, especially those who have depressive symptoms. 相似文献

Comparisons of quality of life (QOL) measures across cultures of countries in different stages of economic development have been very scarce. This study attempts to fill the void in the literature by investigating the level of overall life satisfaction and satisfaction with various domains of lives of Thais and Americans. Additionally, the relationships between satisfaction with domains of life and overall life satisfaction in each culture have been explored. The results of this study indicate that Thais are less satisfied with their lives in general and most of the domains of their lives than Americans. However, both Thais and Americans tend to be more satisfied with their personal domains of lives than environmental domains of lives. In addition, satisfaction with material possessions is found to contribute significantly to overall life satisfaction of Thais but not Americans. This suggests that material wealth or economic development is still a vital mechanism for enhancing QOL of people in Thailand, but is not important for enhancing QOL of people in the U.S. 相似文献

Research in the humanities, arts, and social sciences (HASS) tends to have impacts that enhance quality of life (QOL) but
that are not amenable to pricing in established markets. If the economic value of ‘non-market’ research impacts is ignored
when making the business case for HASS research, society will under-invest in it. My goal in this research was to quantify
priorities and tradeoffs Canadians were willing to make between broad QOL attributes. A national sample (N = 1,612; 14,571 observations) cleaved into five distinct latent classes, each of which varied according to their preferences
and willingness to pay for QOL impacts. One class, comprising 21% of the sample, placed a strong priority on QOL indicators
relating to people, community, and culture, and was willing to pay, on average, 892 per household per year for improvements across a full range of QOL attributes. While willing to pay892 per household per year for improvements
across a full range of QOL attributes. While willing to pay 1,393 per household per year in total, a second segment, comprising
20% of the sample, focused heavily on benefits more likely to be derived from science and technology research. Willingness
to pay for specific and aggregate improvements amongst the balance of the sample was lower. Diverse preferences regarding
potential QOL impacts suggest that researchers will need to consider both the source and magnitude of public benefits arising
from HASS research in the future. 相似文献

This paper presents a new measure for assessing quality of life (QOL) –the Multidimensional Quality of Life (MQOL)– and describes
its derivation, characteristics, structure and several applications. Reasons for developing the MQOL include the restricted
range of assessed domains and the heavy emphasis on health in many standard assessment tools. The MQOL was derived by meaning
probes into QOL in different samples. It is a 60-item self-report tool of high reliability and validity covering various themes
and forming, in line with factor and cluster analyses, 17 scales that constitute five factors according to confirmatory factor
analysis. It has been applied with thousands of individuals, in English, Hebrew, Russian and Arabic, and is adequate for healthy
and physically or mentally sick individuals, under regular or challenging circumstances. Described studies present findings
in samples of sick or healthy individuals (e.g., unemployed, members of a collapsing Kibbutz); relations between the MQOL
and coping strategies in partners of sick individuals; and interrelations of overall and scale scores in new and old immigrants.
Conclusions focus on the structure of the MQOL, the specificity of coping effects, and the stabilizing mechanisms of QOL. 相似文献
