Brief Introduction to the China Organizing Committee for the Fourth World Conference on Women

On January 28, 1991, the Chinese Government wrote to the United Nations, offering to host the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. In March 1992, the 36th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women gratefully accepted the invitation of the Chinese government and decided to schedule the conference for September 4-15, 1995, in Beijing. The theme of the conference is to seek equality, development and peace through action. The secondary subjects include issues of employment, education and health. At that time, all the member countries of the United Nations will send the high-level gorernmental delegation to attend the conference. Meanwhile, the Non-Government Organizations Forum will be held as a subsidiary plenary to the conference. The year 1995 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the 2Oth anniversary of the UN International Women's Year and the lOth anniversary of the adoption of the Nairobi Strategy. This conference is an important event in UN women's affairs and

Meet the Parents

During the past 10 years that I have lived in China, nay parents have visited me once. As my family hails from a rural village （in southern Finland）, which is often -- accidentally -- left off of maps, it is stressful enough to make the weekly groteW shopping ride to the closest city, to say nothing of flying thousands of kilometers to a metropolis of millions to see their firstborn. Development of Rural Women STUDY and discussion on the development of rural women have centered on several areas: to improve rural women's abilities through greater access to education and training which will enable them to participate in social activity; to manage and make policy; to have better jobs to overcome their poverty; and to learn how to make use of legal protections. A Working Day of Professor Hu Yamei

Professor Hu Yamei is a well-known pediatrician and one of the first group of academicians to the Institute of Medical Science attached to the Chinese Academy of Engineering. At the start of her career in the 1950s, she focused on nutritional anemia that afflicts children, developing treatment and methods of prevention. Later she researched etiology, pathology and physiology of pediatric toxic indigestion, helping to reduce the child death rate from 20 percent to 1 percent. Over the past 20 years, she has concentrated on pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. As a result, the five-years living rate of the disease treated by Hu's group has reached 74 percent, approaching the highest level in the world.

Sister Carrie is the masterpiece of Theodore Dreiser who adopted naturalism while creating this work and made contribution to the maturity of naturalism in America.Carrie,the main character of this novel,is not only successful but also controversial.Through a tentative analysis of Carrie’s experience,in particular,the influence of environmental factors and hereditary factors upon her,the author of this paper attempts to give some advice in the light of the universal social problems:the youth should be self-respected,self-confident and self-dependent enough to overcome the disadvantages that environmental factors and hereditary factors have brought them,so that they are qualified to be the masters of their own fate.

It is my pleasure to be here in Hong Kong at the Beijing ＋ 15 Forum of Status of Women amid the elegance and charm of China＇s Pearl of the Orient, and to have the opportunity to meet and discuss with the women of Hong Kong their good works. As this year marks the 15th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, it is an apt date indeed for the Hong Kong Federation of Women to hold this forum. One hundred years ago, the Second International Socialist Women＇s Conference designated March 8 International Women＇s Day. Since then, March 8 has been a festival for women around the world.

The All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF） and the National Working Committee on Children and Women （NWCCW） under the State Council plan to organize experts, who study laws and regulations, to study key and difficult issues related to the promotion of anti-domestic violence legislation. In conjunction with the 14th International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women （on November 25, 2013）, the organizations hosted a seminar to discuss anti-domestic violence legislation in Beijing. Organizers invited experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Peking University, China University of Political Science and Law, and the Women＇s Studies Institutes of China, to ACWF＇s headquarters to discuss issues related to the promotion of anti-domestic violence legislation.

A Man Nationality Doctor Treats AIDS

SINCE the first case of AIDS was reported in the early 1980s the number of HIV patients has been increasing. According to the estimate of the World Health Organization, the number of HIV carriers has risen to 19.5 million, among whom 4:5 million have developed AIDS, resulting in 1 million AIDS-related deaths. By the year 2000, the number of HIV carriers worldwide is predicted to reach 40 million. By the time the global 40 million mark is reached, 90 percent of these cases are predicted to be in developing countries. Then the number of HIV carriers in Asia will likely surpass the number in Africa. China, comprising one-fifth of the world's population, with underdeveloped     

香港各界妇女联合协进会访问团访问北京

At the invitation of the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), a 52-member delegation of the Hong Kong Federation of Women visited Beijing from May 23-26, 2007. Gu Xiulian, Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and ACWF President, greeted the visitors. The Hong Kong delegation, through ACWF, made three donations: One each to two vocational schools, and the other to the fund to construct a swimming center. During their stay, the women also visited several ministries and commissions under the State Council, the Central Government's cabinet, and they provided details of their work and the various activities, hosted by Hong Kong women from all walks of life, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

Auntie Lan

TIANLIN 13 Village, where I live, sits in the southwest corner of Shanghai. It was built in the early 1980s. Whenever the people of the community have problems, they always turn to the woman in charge of the neighborhood committee for help. Most of the residents do not know her real name. They simply refer to her affectionately as their "Auntie Lan." I met Auntie Lan for the first time when I came to the neighborhood committee office to donate some clothes for the people of an area hit by an earthquake. The bright and tidy office, with its wall covered by all kinds of certificates of merit, impressed me deeply. Auntie Lan took the trouble to carefully count and record the donated money and clothes. Her neat penmanship on the notebooks was in harmony with the orderly office.

At the invitation of Leul Gebreab, President of the National Union of Eritrean Women （NUEW）, Meng Xiaosi, Vice-President and Member of the Secretariat of the All-China Women＇s Federation （ACWF）, led a delegation of Chinese women to pay a visit to Eritrea from June 8 to 10.
