This paper considers how parents are affected by and play a role in the lives of their young adult children. The years during which young people make the transition to adulthood has changed significantly in recent years--this transition now takes place over a longer period of time. We describe how young people experience these years; how they affect their parents and parent-child relationships; and how this time period is experienced by vulnerable youth.  相似文献

This qualitative case study investigates the transformative power of a leadership course designed for immigrant secondary school students learning English as an additional language with a social justice orientation. Course projects allowed the students to get involved in tutoring, present at a conference on intercultural education, deliver equity presentations and role model presentation skills for their peers by discussing topics such as Canadian culture, showcase their talents from their L1 cultures and give advice on how to integrate into the school and to lead activities to create school spirit by sharing music from their culture, running a ‘thank your teacher’ campaign, or taking the lead with an international humanitarian cause. The teacher’s plans and notes, course assignments, video footage of students presenting a conference workshop and monthly feedback forms were the data that allowed us to understand how transformative pedagogy was enacted by the teacher and experienced by the students in one Canadian secondary school with a very diverse student population.  相似文献

The psycho-social sense of identity, which is an important component of the sense of self, emerges during childhood and adolescence but is a lifelong process. In intercountry adopted children, additional layers are added to the initial difference of being adopted—in outward appearance and in cultural heritage—that do not match those of the adoptive parents. These may interfere with empathic bonding and with the integration of facets of identity into a meaningful narrative. The article addresses a particular subgroup of adoptive parents—those who have immigrated to Israel in their recent or remote past. Using the framework of self psychology, it suggests ways of helping immigrant adoptive parents to create an empathic affect-bridge with their children, who immigrate to a new family as well as to a new country, by tapping their own experiences as immigrants.  相似文献

Abstract

Refugees almost invariably have a history of traumatic experience and significant loss. However, for some, therapy is neither a practical nor a readily available solution and for others, it may present further challenges in terms of stigma or cultural inappropriateness. On the other hand, a classroom is generally considered unthreatening and, as teachers are with their learners on a regular basis, the opportunity exists for them to provide support and a form of healing. This article presents a range of therapeutic pedagogical strategies which can provide interventions for refugee backgrounds learners. It makes particular reference to the New Zealand on-arrival programme for refugees.  相似文献

Factors to consider in parental reactions to children with AIDS are the unique relationship of each family member to the affected individual; the difference of the parent's reaction compared with other family members; and the roles that the person with AIDS plays in each individual's life. 2. The debilitation caused by AIDS often leads to regression to earlier developmental stages; parents are confronted with a need to once again provide basic support as they work to attain completion of their own psychosocial tasks. 3. Caring for patients with AIDS presents profound challenges to nursing; nurses must carefully schedule breaks and vacations so that this does not become the focus of all their attention.  相似文献

We used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study to examine how couple relationship quality and parental engagement are linked over children's early years-when they are infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. Our sample included 1,630 couples that were coresident over years 1 to 3 and 1,376 couples that were coresident over years 3 to 5 (1,196 over both periods). Overall, we found that better relationship quality predicted greater parental engagement for both mothers and fathers-especially in the infant to toddler years; in contrast, we found little evidence that parental engagement predicted future relationship quality. Married and cohabiting couples were generally similar in how relationship quality and parenting were linked.  相似文献

This study looked at factors contributing to a favor- able adjustment and sense of well being among a non-clinical popu- lation of divorcing parents. Subjects responded to a survey of demo- graphic and divorce data and self perceptions about stress coping abilities. The results suggest that higher levels of coping resources are connected with greater optimism about the future, fewer finan- cial problems, more confidence in parenting ability, and a more satisfactory relationship with the former spouse. Coping resources may also be affected by a person's race or a combination of race and gender.  相似文献

Becoming Parents     
Ninety-six lesbian adoptive parents were part of a cross-sectional study to explore their adoption experiences, specifically focusing on their sources of consultation/information and possible bias, adoption timeframes and costs, and their satisfaction with the adoption experience. Questions within each of these domains were tested for significant differences across international, private domestic and child welfare adoption venues. While their overall experiences were positive, several key significant findings are discussed, with practice considerations suggested for adoption professionals and other lesbians seeking adoption. Lastly, a call for future research is made to further our understanding of lesbian mothers' transition to adoptive parenthood.  相似文献

African American grandparents serve important roles as surrogate parents. Historically they are honored and recognized for their extraordinary service in augmenting the child welfare system. This article provides a contemporary view of the significant number of African American grandparents who serve as surrogate parents. Their assets and challenges are discussed. Following on the work by Dr. Linda Burton and collaborators in 1995, this article addresses the relationship between temporal context, developmental context, and ethnic/racial context of the life course as it relates to grandparenthood in the twenty-first century. In addition to the discussion of African American grand-parenting trends, challenges and benefits in the twenty-first century, the article presents implications of these contexts for the surrogate parenting by older African Americans relative to social work education, research, and policy.  相似文献

The large lecture format, with all its disadvantages, is becoming increasingly prevalent in undergraduate social work education in many countries. In some cases it can present opportunities other teaching formats cannot. One such opportunity is the implementation of surveys exploring students' own experiences and background with regard to key course content. This can help students 'connect' more easily with the concepts and theories presented in the lecture. An example of this method, including context and selected findings, is presented here with regard to a course on the Psychosocial Aspects of Disability and Illness.  相似文献

Beyond documentation of noncustodial fathers’ failure to pay child support or visit, little is known about the dynamics of noncustodial parenting. Even less is known about the experience of noncustodial mothers. Both of these noncustodial relationships need to be studied, as the data can inform us concerning the role of residential status in relation to the quality of the parent-child relationships. This paper seeks to move beyond status-laden conceptualizations of parenthood which emphasize deficiencies associated with noncustodial parenting situations, and examine specific constraints and opportunities inherent in such arrangements. After divorce, noncustodial parents experience diversity and variation in the quality of relationships with their child(ren) and former spouses. This diversity and variation also emerges in relation to economic circumstances for noncustodial parents. More progressive conceptualizations of parenthood are explored which focus on the quality of nonresidential parent-child relationships as well as how parents implement parenting arrangements postdivorce. Recommendations for methodologies which are sensitive to issues related to diversity and process, as well as policy implications are offered.  相似文献

During the past 10 years that I have lived in China, nay parents have visited me once. As my family hails from a rural village (in southern Finland), which is often -- accidentally -- left off of maps, it is stressful enough to make the weekly groteW shopping ride to the closest city, to say nothing of flying thousands of kilometers to a metropolis of millions to see their firstborn. One can only imagine how overwhelming a city like Beijing must be for someone whose highlight of the day is to pick up the mail -- my mother always gets a little too excited over the prospect of catching a glimpse of a neighbor on the way to the mailbox.  相似文献

Institutions influence the transition to parenthood in two ways: they affect the timing of the decision to have children and they shape the experience of parenting. This paper explores both types of influence focusing on education, economic, medical, legal and religious institutions. After looking at the role of institutions in delaying childbirth, examination focuses on the response of institutions to today's older new parents and consideration is given to normal (i.e., typical) parent roles are created. Before the recent implementation of the Hague Convention requirements on intercountry adoption in Guatemala, most children in the process of being adopted by foreign nationals were cared for by foster parents. In the present study, 16 Guatemalan foster parents were interviewed regarding their experiences with and attitudes toward international and domestic adoption and fostering. Although adoption was generally described in positive terms as a means to improve the child's future, respondents also emphasized the economic dimension of international adoption. Foster parents’ views implied actions that are important for implementation of the Hague Convention requirements, including addressing poverty as the root cause of child relinquishment, reducing structural and attitudinal barriers to domestic adoption, and enlisting the aid of extended families in caring for children. With training and licensing, foster parents themselves might play a role in post-Hague procedures for providing families for children.  相似文献

The paper introduces the concept of identity agents. This concept refers to those individuals who actively interact with children and youth with the intention of participating in their identity formation, and who reflectively mediate larger social influences on identity formation. This contrasts with the focus of mainstream research in the identity field that tends to portray adolescents as the sole reflective agents involved in mature identity development. The paper presents a theoretical analysis presenting the importance of the concept for the formulation of a comprehensive contextual theory of identity formation. The particulars of this concept are illustrated through the presentation of a qualitative report of religious parents actively encouraging their children's processes of identification, co‐participating in their children's identity's formation, and reflectively deliberating their parental roles and goals in regards to this process.  相似文献
